I flashed 3 different sonoffs with your instructions. Holes were opened (not soldered). I just used some male pins and set them at an angle to make contact. Worked like charm. Thanks DrZzs
Was watching for the 3 volt jumper move and I thought you missed it but circled back at the correct time! Sneak attack. Something all of us forget when we changed it back in the day. Great video.
Awesome! Those are still some of my favorites. Wish they still made them the old way honestly. I don't think the R2 or R3 are really better than the R1.
The flashing method worked perfectly for me, really appreciate the information. I just ordered some Sonoff basics a couple weeks ago and the openings were not full of solder. I was able to solder in header pins easily. If I received these with solder in the openings I would definitely just remove the solder and then solder in a header before I would deal with 3D printing and pogo pins.
Glad to hear it! Ya, I agree with desoldering over the pogopin option. I've had trouble getting the pins to stay in contact with the board sometimes. Hopefully they've stopped soldering the holes closed :)
@@DrZzs I liked your previous video on flashing a sonoff... not the previous one to the previous one, just the previous one... OMG I mean the one posted on Feb 13 2018... anyway the look of the hoodie partially showing then fading to the background looked really good!
Omg, thank you. I just purchased a set of Sonoffs, going to use one to automate turning on/off the light in the pantry when the door is opened/closed. My first big (for me) automation project. Also going to connect it to Hassio, what fun! God Bless :)
Great info. My new one fortunately still came with open holes but I don't do soldering anymore either, I just clamp in a male header. Thanks for yr pointers on the setup
Thanks so much again for this easy to follow tutorial. I just hope some day it will be a sonoff add-on for home assistant so that I don't have to do all these flashing thing cause in my case I just want them to communicate to HA and nothing else
You can also drill out the solder with a 0.9mm PCB drill bit (0.035"). Xuchuan 10Pcs PCB Print Circuit Board Carbide Micro Drill Bits 0.9mm on Amazon. Then solder on your header pins. Spin drill with your fingers is all you need, will go through in less than 30 seconds.
I do it all the time, just dont keep the iron on too long (~5 -8 secs) or you will lift a track. www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-23553-De-Soldering-gun/dp/B0001K9RAI
ESP Home is SO much easier once you figure it out. Copy the YAML file you have created for something else that is sonoff. Change the names of a couple things. Connect the FTDI to the Sonoff and plug it in to USB Go to the folder with all your ESP Home stuff in the command prompt and type "esphome file.yaml run" When the prompt asks where the device is tap 1 for the FTDI in my case or 2 for WiFi. Wait a few till it says it's resetting. Remove power then reapply to reset the Sonoff. Watch it connect to WiFi then put it all back in the case and hook it up. It pops up in HomeAssistant and just has to be added. A few things are different to setup like if you want the button to basically reboot a device or something but otherwise it's super simple. The main thing is each time you compile YOUR own bin for each device but no need for extra software to flash or to go into something to configure it nor an in between broker like MQTT to perform actions. Once it's been flashed you can update or make changes over WiFi direct from ESP Home's setup directory which in my case is in the Python Folder.
Just had to flash my first Sonoff in a while, and I tried this method. Entering the commands in bulk via Termite is WAY better than individually updating settings in the web console. One addition I'd make to the list of commands is "ButtonTopic ". I had the problem where the physical button on the sonoff was sending an MQTT command that wasn't matching the one it was listening for, and therefore wasn't toggling the relay.
I just had that happen with my newest T1's That must be a new change in Tasmota 6.x Thanks for posting about it! I'm sure others will run into that problem now too. Hopefully they'll read this... Thanks!
As a newbie this is what I worked out from the template you added that we can paste into termite to program the sonoff. Backlog SSID1 Dlink-47H7J-1; (name of the wifi in my house) Password1 4Ylf9ttT; (password of your wifi (note you can NOT have special characters in your Wifi password it's not supported in the later versions of sonoff.bin firmware)) MqttHost 192.168.1.199; (ip address of raspberry pi on your home network, note PI and your sonoff must be on the same network) MqttUser mikej; (username I setup in mosquitto addon) MqttPassword demo008%; (password I setup in mosquitto addon) GPIO14 09; (when you get into the web interface for your tasmota flashed sonoff you will see there is GPI01, 3, 4 and 14 these are pins on the sonoff which you can connect things to later eg a external switch, PIR sensor etc setting GPIO14 pin to 09 means you can connect a pushbutton switch to your sonoff and toggle it on and off with a external switch, this setting is not overly important to get your sonoff working you can change it later in the web interface easily). Hostname Patio Light; (Give sonoff a name on your wifi (eg when you look in your router GUI what do you want this device to show as) MqttClient pattiotable88; (i don't think this name is important at beginners level just set it the same as your topic) Topic sonoff01; (eg sonoff needs its own unique name so it can be called upon via MQTT you will use this name hassio config.yaml to speak to your sonoff, you can call it what you want I just went with sonoff01) FriendlyName1 PatioTable (give my sonoff a name for you it can have spaces if you want too)
Just getting back into this, I see the Termite thing took off really well. Got a few new videos I want to do on the topic. Hope you are doing well, maybe we can cross-colab again. -Regards
GREAT video, as always. Just some info to pass on....In case others, like me, needed help....thought; I can't be the only one with a WiFi issue AFTER flashing the new Sonoff-Tasmota-Release 6.3.0 !!!! My 'WiFi Analyzer shows '0' (ZERO) transmitter output power from the SonOff, while the 'Termite' terminal read (no matter which bin I used): 00:00:00 Project sonoff Sonoff (Topic sonoff, Fallback DVES_6771E4, GroupTopic sonoffs) Version 6.3.0-2_3_0 00:00:00 WIF: Connecting to AP1 (my ssid) in mode 11N as sonoff-4580... 00:00:09 WIF: Connect failed as AP cannot be reached ..............over and over again..... My Analyzer showed PLENTY of power from my router! Even placing the Sonoff Basic within 3-4' of the router did NOT CONNECT!! Then I found: ...github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota/issues/3289 Finally, OTHERS with this issue...I downloaded Sonoff-Tasmota-Release 5.1.4 (per your video) Erased the Sonoff memory (with esptool), Flashed with FlashESP8266.exe and...after about 5 minutes...SUCCESS, WiFi working, ALL OK!!!
Can you make a video in how you put the sonoff flasher together as I have wrecked one trying to get the pogo ping in and I would like to see how you did it
Great tutorial. Every detail is important to begginers. My Sonoff is the version with the holes, and usb converter already had rx and tx aligned, no crossing was necessary on the jumper wires. Everything looked fine until I tried to flash it. Termite didn't communicate at all. I was banging my head on the table for hours, until I finally saw the answer in a blog. The usb-to-rs232-adapter I use has the super cheap chip pl2303hax, not the ftdi's chip. It seems pl2303 version "hx" was pirated somehow and the vendor decided to drop a new windows 10 driver that killed all chips with that revision. Sadly there is no way to know if i have an original or not... and it doesn't matter anyway since all affected users NEED to buy new chips. (I still solved it downgrading the driver to an old version I found on the blog with the solution, after that it was ok).
Love the videos and attention to detail. Following the procedure I am having no success. At first I thought I had a bad Sonoff, but I'm having the same issue with the replacement. I am using the Micro USB adapter you suggested. I've verified 3.3v, proper connections and using a data cable. However I can't get a terminal connection. I use linux and am using esptool.py. I am old salt in IT and low level stuff. When I power up the FTDI, leds blink momentarily. The sonoff never shows any led activity, don't know if this is normal. Without booting in programming mode I can't get a terminal connection and esptool -p /dev/ttyUSB0 read_mac or just ttyUSB0 throws an error (running cmd as root). dmesg shows FTDI at /dev/ttyUSB0. I do see led activity on the FTDI when I open putty (or minicom) and press enter in the terminal window. Not sure if I'm missing something or bad FTDI or another bad Sonoff.
I found the error of my way... I had connected pwr to the DTR pin which was supplying 3.3v. Had tested voltage and thought I was good. Connected to the VCC pin and all my issues went away. Flashed successfully, connected to and configured for my WIFI and on my way to setting up. Thank you again!
Awesome 3dPrint. Im thinking of buying a 3dPrinter and this would be an other reason to buy! I just removed the solder with a old COAX Cable. Put some solder liquid on the thin COAX CAble and heat up the solderpoint from one side and put the Cable on the otherside!
Let me get this straight. Let's pick one advantage of flashing. Now I am thinking if I flash I should be able to use the unit ( with some extra programming ) to turn on a regular light bulb (120v) using the sonoff as well as the regular existing on-off switch ( I am not talking about replacing the existing switch with a push on/off or touch-sensitive switch ). Please confirm if I am right here. PLEASE. I am a newbie.
May be I didnt explain this here. What I want is to use SONOFF and my regular household switch to turn a light on and off ( I should be able to use the regular switch and then also be able to use the wifi app and turn on/off the bulb. I hope I am clear )
Hi there, what do you think about the security of these cloud technologies? Are they secure enough against stealing data from your phone and computer. they connect to your router and phone, can they steal critical data such as bank account passwords from your devices? please make a video dedicated to this topic.
What would be your recommendation for Tazmotizing some light switches around the house. Would you still use the sonoff basic with this method today (with the wire tape)?
plus i got my anet a8 3d printer workin g and its been cranking out parts. got carried away on the prime day sale and got a another out of the box monoprice mp i3 for $100- so got a backup now. Waiting for your server nerf project too. I will be printing out this clips instead of pogo pins..i believe i an use those long connection pins that come packaged with the wemo minis. thanks again doc..i dont want you to slow down the project videos & live streams ( buts its getting hard keeping up with your pace :) -its better than absconding bruh ben)
sweet! I can't remember life without a 3d printer. Set yourself up a shop at 3dhubs too. You may get some money back eventually. I can hardly keep up with myself sometimes too!
Hi DrZZs :) 2 things: the ftdi adapter could be fake, and ftdi with microsoft created some drivers that detect fake ones and could brick your adapter... try to search online, there's a lot of info about this... 2nd: there's a new esp flasher just released, and i still have to try if the POST flashing stuff is working on tasmota, too (they're ment to be used on espeasy flashed devices...): it would be great to add wifi credentials directly from this program... well, trying is free and harmless :D link in next comment
That first FTDI adapter in the video (the one that DrZzs uses) says right in the description that it is "Not Genuine FTDI Chip". That's okay if you don't use Windows. It's also okay if you use the old drivers. But like @squalazzo said; the new Windows drivers will brick your adapter.
uh oh. Should I recommend a different adapter then? I am using Windows and I don't remember changing a driver, but if it'll save others some trouble I can link a different adapter.
Great input guys. Thank you. I looked at the Micro USB FTDI I linked and it seems to be "genuine" FTDI so I assume it'll be compatible with Windows without causing any problems or needing extra drivers. If I'm wrong please let me know. Thanks!
Hey @DrZZs - I had used your previous tamota flash method and it was great while it lasted. One day it refused to connect to wifi and it's been that way eversince. Any way to revive this sonoff? Also, does this new solution allow for OTA updates? Thanks for all the great tutorials!
Hi! I've just panicked, My new Sonoff arrived and they are R2, without GPIO14. Are you planning a video about how to flash these new ones? We need your help Dr
oh man, the Budweiser Goal light hardwire hack is in its final stages. It is going to be amazing! One question - I am able to use its IP address to see the GUI and add parameters, I only entered SSID and password in Termite as I didn"t have the MQTT info available and did not understand the other parameters but knew I could change in the GUI, .... so far I changed the friendly name - it is not showing in Hassio, I have auto detect enabled and a static IP, will HA only see it with MQTT? Seems weird if yes but? BTW, I flashed sonoff to a D1 mini
I have bought a couple Sonoff devices and the last one was an R2. I can't get it to connect to my WiFi and Sonoff themselves are not helpful. Do you have any resources that I can watch to troubleshoot? Thanks in advance.
sorry if this is something silly but can't get this to work. Trying to flash my first sonoff, which has open holes so no need of pogo pins. Have tried to hold the pins a hundred different ways but when running ESPeasy i get "flush complete" then "espcomm_send_command: sending command header", then "espcomm_send_command: sending command payload" and then "read 0, requested 1" to finally "resetting board". Is it a problem with the pins (should i solder them)? the FTDI drivers/adapter (bought the one from the link in the description), the versions? (tried the ones in the video with no luck). Any help is much appreciated!
Is it necessary to give all 4 sonoff names in the backlog? If so which one shows up in fing, which one is in tasmota, and where do the other 2 show up? Thank you for your help. I followed this video and got Tasmota on my sonoff now I have to get it on ha. Just need to know what name ha will be looking for.
Lately I've used 6.4.1 It might not be the version of tasmota that's causing the problem. When you start FlashEZ with the sonoff connected do you see a new Com port in Flash EZ? Something other than Com1? Could be a bad USB/Serial adapter, or maybe the sonoff just isn't getting into programming mode.
Gret videos - I've been following your channel with interest. Quick question for you though, can we dim light with a sonoff basic ? if not is there a similar "tasmota" device that can do the job ? Shelly maybe ? Thanks !
ya, I'm wondering if we'll ever get to the point that most of the power in our houses is low voltage. Most of our devices are 12v or 5v. All our lights should be LEDs now. Would be safer and easier if we had 12v all through the house instead of 120v or 220v. Exceptions being large appliances like washer/dryer, AC, Fridge, Ovens etc.
I plan on having a Sonoff Basic in the wall, with a switch on GPIO14 that controls an S26 through HomeAssistant automation. Is it safe to have the Basic in the wall running it's relay on even with nothing connected to it's output? I've got the automations setup and it all works perfectly, but I want to check before putting it in the wall.
Sir, can I flash esp8266 01 chip right from scratch to make my own sonoff module using other auxiliary components or do I have to use the readily available sonoff module. If possible please share the schematics details and software code so I can make one. Thanks
Thanks for the video. I followed the instructions and the flashing went well, but the sonoff doesn't allways connect to my wifi. I hav a Ubiquity network with multiple AP's. The Sonoff doesn't connect to the Livingroom AP, but sometimes connects tot the bedroom AP, which is further away. The livingroom AP seems to work. In my router I see users connected to that AP. When using Termite I get the error cannot connect AP time out error. Does someone have an idea? I tried flashing older versions of Tasmota, but that did not help.
I don't have one yet to test, but did you try going to the IP address of the Sonoff, then enter in the new password? (before changing the wifi password of course) If you did change the password first, you'll probably have to connect through serial / usb again and edit the config that way.
subscribed, liked, bookmarked and lastly THANKS! questions: 1. I need a sonoff that can do pulse (ON for 2 seconds, then OFF). can tesmoda do that? 2. There is no internet where sonoff will be installed; can I run sonoff in AP mode wherein my mobile devices will connect to it via wifi to command it? TIA!
Thanks! yes, to have it on for 2 sec then off, go to the console in the Tasmota UI and type "Pulsetime 20" That will turn the relay off after 2 seconds. hmmm. I don't know if there is a way to keep the sonoff broadcasting an AP and also control it. I think the AP mode may only work for setup. That's something you may need to hunt for in the Tasmota documentation. Sorry, I don't know the answer for you.
@@DrZzs I checked around with the AP functionality (aka Standalone mode) on forums, groups, and such. As far as the official tasmota team is concern, they are NOT interested in adding this feature opining they intend tasmota as a home automation system (interconnecting with others) and not as a single controller on its own. Only Shelly in its original firmware offers this "Standalone" feature.
Hi all, I just flashed a sonoff using your istructions. Then I added information on my SSID using termite but it can't connect to my wifi. I then tried to restart over and I noticed that the sonoff "remembers" my SSID also if I refleshed it. There is a way to erase the firmware before reflashing? And then a curiosity: my SSID name has a space "Name Name". This can be a problem?
I've got one. I've just been waiting until I have the time to take down my fan and get it working. I've been following the thread on the Tasmota page. Do you have one you're trying to get working?
I keep watching for the same thing my fall projects include swapping 3 light fixtures for light/fans figure might as well go all in, and make them smart
Thank you very much for the great video. I am not sure if asking technical questions is OK, but how do I find the Myqtt broakerIP and what should be the unique_sonoff_name etc should be compared to the names you have given as examples. Thanks in advance!
Assuming you have the MQTT broker setup as a Hassio Addon, the MQTT host IP address is the IP address of your HA pi. When you set up tasmota you can give your sonoff any name you want. Usually it is helpful to name it for where it is located or what it is controlling. Just make sure the name you give it is what you use in all the other locations. Most importantly in the MQTT topic.
And again a great tutorial! Thanks! I don’t know why but termite isn’t working in my config. Never get the green text. To configure the Sonoff I’ll put the Sonoff in AP modus by pressing the button 4 times very fast and add my setting via the web configuration page
DrZzs I don’t know why it doesn’t work. Most of the times when I finished flashing I want to play with it instead of investigate why termite doesn’t work 🧐
Is there an easy way to remove solder from the holes? If we want to connect external switch to GPIO 14 we still have to solder header pins. I managed to do it by heating the solder from one side of PCB and pushing the pin from the other side but final result was messy.
Tried it repeatedly as you suggested, how every when I flash it runs the black screen and rolls through the script yet never connects... Any ideas? I have been trying to get this done fore months! Thanks I have managed to flash the New Basic3 from your other video but don't want to replace all of my old Basic's
That's a bummer. I'll sure try to help you. Do you get the "flash complete" message? Try to join one of the live streams and we'll see if we can trouble shoot what's happening.
I get stuck at sending the info through termite to the sonoff... it does not report back with an ip adres, just seems to keep on rebooting.. I'm a real noob at this, and may have messed up the message to be sent to the sonoff. MQTT is a complete mistery to me at this moment, and may not have gotten those settings correct. Any help would be appreciated
DrZzzs Thanks once again for a great video, just once question thou, is ghosting still happening with the new sonoff's or has there been a fix for that ?
it still happens. I thought I was free of all that nonsense, but just in the last few days I've had some random switching happening. Not sure what the source is yet.
DrZzs are those sonoff's using the low pass filter?. Ive flashed two units for my bedroom, just wondering if i should use the filter just in case... your thoughts ?
marc mysterio I’d say it depends on what kind of button you’re using. If you use a mechanical switch or a push button then including the lpf is probably a good idea. If you’re using capacitive touch buttons then you probably don’t need the lpf. I pretty much only use capacitive touch buttons anymore so I haven’t used the lpf on the last few I’ve done.
OMG wish I seen this before using the Arduino method.... If you just want to flash a standard sonoff file and not play in the coding space this is the way to go....
yes. Check the other comments. I think someone said a 0.9mm bit just using your fingers to spin it worked for them. Others have used soldering wick. Lots of options :)
yes, that's true. You have to do quite the driver-dance to get the FTDI to be recognized by a mac. I've had it working in the past, but then it randomly stopped and I didn't want to redo the dance. So I've been doing all my flashing on Win10 pc for a while now.
DrZzs - Yet again I simply cannot get this to work. I constantly get ‘Flash Failed’ - I know the connection is good so this is a mystery. When selecting Firmware in the ESPEasy Flasher should sonoff.bin be displayed as: .\sonoff.bin Any clues?
@DrZzz - I have noted an apparent error message when it attempts to flash: Warning: espcomm_send_command: wrong direction/command: 0x00 0x08, expected 0.01 0x08 It then tries a few more times to flash (in a matter of moments) and then I get the ‘flash failed’ box appear. Does this mean anything to you?
Hi, I have one problem with sunoff basic and tasmot. If I have a 3.3V and gnd connected from my computer, the device works ok. But if I connect to 230V, the device does not work. Only the green LED light flashes, and the button on the circuit works ok. Where is the problem? thanks J
Had the same problem. I just reflashed firmware to older version, specifically to 6.1.1 as it was already on my computer, and everything started working perfectly.
I am not too much into electronics.. But in a few simple words can you tell me what this FLASHING is ? Why do we need this ? Is it because you dont like your devices to be controlled by the CLOUD ? Please reply
Flashing is the process of replacing the firmware that comes on the device from the manufacturer. When this video was published that was the only way to use these really cheap devices with your smart home hub of choice. Things have changed and in most cases you can get these devices to function with any smart home hub now. Some people still change the firmware (by flashing) because they want to avoid the cloud or because other firmware allows you to add functions to the device that the stock firmware doesn’t allow. Like adding motion detection or temperature sensor to a device that was built as just a light switch. Flashing isn’t for everyone. It’s a fun way to tinker around and learn how these devices work and what all they can do.
@@DrZzs OK, I already use SONOFF to control my garage door (Sonoff Basic). The only thing I dont like is I use the eWeLink app, controlled by a chineese company ? Is there a way to only control SONOFF when I am at home and via the HOME-WIFI only ? i dont need CLOUD control. What must I do ?
Hi DrZzz, I recently brought a Sonoff iFan02 module and I see that few people have successfully flashed it using tasmota. Hence I am not pro, I am hesitant to do it without detailed info. Can I suggest that you make a video on it, please!! Thank you.
The Tasmota github page seems to have been changed. NOw there is no sonoff.bin file anywhere to be found. Which bin should i use for the sonoff basic? Cheers
Hi ! I flashet this firmware to all my sonoff devices. It worked great but when I woke up today, all my devices have lost their IP-adresses so I am not able to connect to them and therefore I can not use them. They work if I manually press the buttom though. Any ideas ?
Why do you use 5.14? Trying to use a DHT22 on my sonoff basic running 5.9.1 and it’s not working correctly only DrZzzs showing up every now and then with the temp/humidity info then it goes away, done this to 3 sonoff basic with same result using SonOTA starting to think this is the issue here ?
yes i have it working in homekit using your SonOTA tasmota tuturial and HAP-NodeJS...... so now i downgraded to 5.1.4 because i wouldn't let me upgrade to 6.1.1, the temp/humidity worked basically fine but then i went to change sonoff friendly name... aftter hitting save the sonoff is now dead/unresponsive...weird so now i have no sonoff under 1.6 firmware :( cant use SonOTA so i brought a FTDI FT232 instead of a FT232RL as it was at my local jaycar.... i cant get it to work they look pretty much the same :(
I get the NodeMCU flash okay. But when I try the WeMo Mini, I have a problem with "connect failed to domus1:1883, rc-2 Retry in 10 sec..." in the Termite terminal. Any idea why? Great job flashing the Tasmota..
ha! thanks. I've pretty much stopped the floating head gag. Occasionally I'll use it at the end of a video, just as a nod to the past. Now what am I gonna do with this bright green turtle neck!??!
I believe it will. You have to make sure to set the time correctly. I haven't used the Timer functions. Here's a link to the relevant commands: github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota/wiki/Commands#timers
I flashed 3 different sonoffs with your instructions. Holes were opened (not soldered). I just used some male pins and set them at an angle to make contact. Worked like charm. Thanks DrZzs
Awesome!!
I also just bought the 6 pack in the link and the holes were open. I ordered a clip at the same time so maybe I'll need it in the future.
Was watching for the 3 volt jumper move and I thought you missed it but circled back at the correct time! Sneak attack. Something all of us forget when we changed it back in the day. Great video.
haha. gotcha!
Thanks for these instructions. I just picked up my programming clip at my library, inserted my pogo pins and got everything working.
I still had the old R1 laying around. Thanks to you flashing it was a piece of cake.
Thank you
Awesome!
Those are still some of my favorites. Wish they still made them the old way honestly. I don't think the R2 or R3 are really better than the R1.
@@DrZzs how do you like the newest sonoff with the "DIY mode". Are they better?
The flashing method worked perfectly for me, really appreciate the information. I just ordered some Sonoff basics a couple weeks ago and the openings were not full of solder. I was able to solder in header pins easily. If I received these with solder in the openings I would definitely just remove the solder and then solder in a header before I would deal with 3D printing and pogo pins.
Glad to hear it!
Ya, I agree with desoldering over the pogopin option. I've had trouble getting the pins to stay in contact with the board sometimes. Hopefully they've stopped soldering the holes closed :)
Come for the Sonoff hacking, stay for the decapitated floating head.
Ha! Awesome.
Good luck! They've changed the layout of the newer sonoff basics. Flashing should be the same, but there is no GPIO14.
Great info. My new one fortunately still came with open holes but I don't do soldering anymore either, I just clamp in a male header.
Thanks for yr pointers on the setup
You're welcome!
Thanks so much again for this easy to follow tutorial. I just hope some day it will be a sonoff add-on for home assistant so that I don't have to do all these flashing thing cause in my case I just want them to communicate to HA and nothing else
Amen! I've got plenty of other things to make videos about. This is 3-4 just about flashing these devices :)
You can also drill out the solder with a 0.9mm PCB drill bit (0.035"). Xuchuan 10Pcs PCB Print Circuit Board Carbide Micro Drill Bits 0.9mm on Amazon. Then solder on your header pins. Spin drill with your fingers is all you need, will go through in less than 30 seconds.
excellent!
Excellent. Those console commands are especially helpful. Thanks!
Thanks! I agree. Very helpful indeed.
Hi Dr Zzs I would like to know if you can indicate the way to do the same flash on Macbook.
Can you just suck up all the solder at the holes and re solder regular male pins?
Belen Hedderich yes. Or you can just heat it up and insert one pre tinned pin at a time.
I do it all the time, just dont keep the iron on too long (~5 -8 secs) or you will lift a track. www.amazon.co.uk/Draper-23553-De-Soldering-gun/dp/B0001K9RAI
Good work man. As always clear explanation and to the point. Thanks
You're welcome! glad to help.
Great video, thanks! I have an idea for your extra pogo-pins: Assemble some clips and use them for Patreon rewards.
That is a great idea!
I just had that happen with my newest T1's
That must be a new change in Tasmota 6.x
Thanks for posting about it! I'm sure others will run into that problem now too. Hopefully they'll read this...
Thanks!
I used your method and it worked first time. Now I am trying to figure out what is my MqttHost, what is a brokerIP? and what are they used for?
As a newbie this is what I worked out from the template you added that we can paste into termite to program the sonoff.
Backlog
SSID1 Dlink-47H7J-1; (name of the wifi in my house)
Password1 4Ylf9ttT; (password of your wifi (note you can NOT have special characters in your Wifi password it's not supported in the later versions of sonoff.bin firmware))
MqttHost 192.168.1.199; (ip address of raspberry pi on your home network, note PI and your sonoff must be on the same network)
MqttUser mikej; (username I setup in mosquitto addon)
MqttPassword demo008%; (password I setup in mosquitto addon)
GPIO14 09; (when you get into the web interface for your tasmota flashed sonoff you will see there is GPI01, 3, 4 and 14 these are pins on the sonoff which you can connect things to later eg a external switch, PIR sensor etc setting GPIO14 pin to 09 means you can connect a pushbutton switch to your sonoff and toggle it on and off with a external switch, this setting is not overly important to get your sonoff working you can change it later in the web interface easily).
Hostname Patio Light; (Give sonoff a name on your wifi (eg when you look in your router GUI what do you want this device to show as)
MqttClient pattiotable88; (i don't think this name is important at beginners level just set it the same as your topic)
Topic sonoff01; (eg sonoff needs its own unique name so it can be called upon via MQTT you will use this name hassio config.yaml to speak to your sonoff, you can call it what you want I just went with sonoff01)
FriendlyName1 PatioTable (give my sonoff a name for you it can have spaces if you want too)
Just getting back into this, I see the Termite thing took off really well.
My 'WiFi Analyzer shows '0' (ZERO) transmitter output power from the SonOff, while the 'Termite' terminal read (no matter which bin I used):
00:00:00 Project sonoff Sonoff (Topic sonoff, Fallback DVES_6771E4, GroupTopic sonoffs) Version 6.3.0-2_3_0
00:00:00 WIF: Connecting to AP1 (my ssid) in mode 11N as sonoff-4580...
00:00:09 WIF: Connect failed as AP cannot be reached
..............over and over again.....
My Analyzer showed PLENTY of power from my router! Even placing the Sonoff Basic within 3-4' of the router did NOT CONNECT!!
Then I found: ...github.com/arendst/Sonoff-Tasmota/issues/3289
Finally, OTHERS with this issue...I downloaded Sonoff-Tasmota-Release 5.1.4 (per your video) Erased the Sonoff memory (with esptool), Flashed with FlashESP8266.exe and...after about 5 minutes...SUCCESS, WiFi working, ALL OK!!!
ugh
Well, glad you got it working, and thanks for the warning.
Great video Doc, I just flashed mine thanks for your it.
Daniel Hernandez did you have any issues with serial adapter or was it just as video
Dave Singh it is just like video, the difference is I flashed RF bridge instead a switch. The method is ok
im having a hell of a time ive tried uising arduino in ubuntu, adruino windows and esp ez flash with no luck
Can you make a video in how you put the sonoff flasher together as I have wrecked one trying to get the pogo ping in and I would like to see how you did it
Another amazing tutorial for the beginners!
Thanks!
Another very nice video, thank you for taking the time & effort.
Any chance you would sell a printed clip with some of those extra pogo pins :-)
Excellent!
Glad you got it worked out. Thanks for the positive feedback. I'll keep doing it!
Thanks ! I will Try it today !
Awesome 3dPrint. Im thinking of buying a 3dPrinter and this would be an other reason to buy!
I just removed the solder with a old COAX Cable. Put some solder liquid on the thin COAX CAble and heat up the solderpoint from one side and put the Cable on the otherside!
cool! way to find a creative solution!
Great Video Doc!!! Thanks a lot for sharing...
you're welcome! Hope it's helpful!
What would be your recommendation for Tazmotizing some light switches around the house. Would you still use the sonoff basic with this method today (with the wire tape)?
Great video! However I had to connect the adapter first and then press the button and connect the 3v wire like in your previous video.
Thanks! Well, glad you got it working.
Very good tutorial, thank you for your dedication
You're welcome! Hope it helps!
thanks for update...all links and cmds in one place now.
makes the setup pretty fast.
plus i got my anet a8 3d printer workin g and its been cranking out parts. got carried away on the prime day sale and got a another out of the box monoprice mp i3 for $100- so got a backup now.
😎😲 Wow, i'll try this next weekend. Thx 😉
good luck!
The best explanation, thank you sir
Excellent, as always.
thanks!
Hi DrZZs :)
2 things: the ftdi adapter could be fake, and ftdi with microsoft created some drivers that detect fake ones and could brick your adapter... try to search online, there's a lot of info about this...
2nd: there's a new esp flasher just released, and i still have to try if the POST flashing stuff is working on tasmota, too (they're ment to be used on espeasy flashed devices...): it would be great to add wifi credentials directly from this program... well, trying is free and harmless :D

Thanks!
Thanks for all the great tutorials!
yup think the process has changed, do a flashing vid for the IW101
oh it sure has! I have one of those devices I need to dig out and test. They keep asking me if I've tested it yet ;)
Hi!
I've just panicked,
My new Sonoff arrived and they are R2, without GPIO14.
Great video as always,
Thanks!
Best manual for beginners ,just like me.
which tasmota version did u use? I tried with 5.14.0 and the new 6.5.0 and it says flash failed ( ESPEasy flasher can't connect to the sonoff)
Lately I've used 6.4.1
It might not be the version of tasmota that's causing the problem. When you start FlashEZ with the sonoff connected do you see a new Com port in Flash EZ? Something other than Com1?
Could be a bad USB/Serial adapter, or maybe the sonoff just isn't getting into programming mode.
All hail the Great Zordon :D
We must save the world from Rita Repulsa with Home Automation!!
Gret videos - I've been following your channel with interest. Quick question for you though, can we dim light with a sonoff basic ? if not is there a similar "tasmota" device that can do the job ? Shelly maybe ? Thanks !
part of advise: to kep things safe maybe use the Sonoff DC 5V-24V DIY WIFI Wireless Switch Socket SV
ya, I'm wondering if we'll ever get to the point that most of the power in our houses is low voltage. Most of our devices are 12v or 5v. All our lights should be LEDs now. Would be safer and easier if we had 12v all through the house instead of 120v or 220v. Exceptions being large appliances like washer/dryer, AC, Fridge, Ovens etc.
Another awesome video! Thanks a million for teaching me how to do this the new and easy way.
Your the best. :)
thanks man! Glad to help!
Question: when printing Mark's Sonoff Holder Clip. How dense do they need to be? Should I go with 50% or 100%
Not sure there's a big difference. I used 30% with PLA and it never broke. I didn't use it much though.
Awesom Bro. Great.
Thanks!
Nice video, but the first thing I'd like to know is "why". Why do we need to flash the Sonof?
Excellent question!
Here's my answer: ua-cam.com/video/MyPpmDAThA4/v-deo.htmlm8s
Thanks for the info on the Termite command line configuring of the Sonoff.
you bet!
When I plugged in the VCC (3V) the Sonoff light begins to blink. Is it supposed to blink while it is being flashed?
I plan on having a Sonoff Basic in the wall, with a switch on GPIO14 that controls an S26 through HomeAssistant automation. Is it safe to have the Basic in the wall running it's relay on even with nothing connected to it's output? I've got the automations setup and it all works perfectly, but I want to check before putting it in the wall.
Can we set schedule or timing for devices in tasmota ???.
Is there a simple tutorial on using tasmota to control the device? For instance, how can I activate device via a phone app or remotely etc?
Great video..do advise what to do when one changes the wifi password...I am lost on that
I don't have one yet to test, but did you try going to the IP address of the Sonoff, then enter in the new password? (before changing the wifi password of course) If you did change the password first, you'll probably have to connect through serial / usb again and edit the config that way.
subscribed, liked, bookmarked and lastly THANKS!
questions:
After flashing with the latest Tasmota, Home Assistant cannot find it as a Wemo emulation. Is this a known problem, and is there a fix?
What about the sonoff dual r2 i did that but when i reached the termite it didn’t became green..
Hi, it would be great if you can make a video on how to flash tasmota on iFan02 and integrate it with Home assistant.
I've got one. I've just been waiting until I have the time to take down my fan and get it working. I've been following the thread on the Tasmota page. Do you have one you're trying to get working?
I keep watching for the same thing
my fall projects include swapping 3 light fixtures for light/fans
figure might as well go all in, and make them smart
I'm newbie to Sonoff. Hope it is not too late. Is it possible to flash sonoff tasmota firmware now? My sonoff basic r2 is currently on firmware 1.6
Manjula, I think you are from Sri Lanka. Can I call you and ask you some questions. I am from SL and live in US. i dont think I understood this video
@@mw7185 You can. Tweet me @manjulapra
@@ManjulaDharmawardhana OK, where do you live SL ?
Why not un solder the closed holes?
Does the same process work for the Sonoff Duel
And again a great tutorial! Thanks! I don’t know why but termite isn’t working in my config. Never get the green text. To configure the Sonoff I’ll put the Sonoff in AP modus by pressing the button 4 times very fast and add my setting via the web configuration page
That works too. Wonder why Termite doesn't like you? Oh well. :)
DrZzs I don’t know why it doesn’t work. Most of the times when I finished flashing I want to play with it instead of investigate why termite doesn’t work 🧐
Good call. Just move on to the fun stuff!
Is there an easy way to remove solder from the holes? If we want to connect external switch to GPIO 14 we still have to solder header pins. I managed to do it by heating the solder from one side of PCB and pushing the pin from the other side but final result was messy.
google "desoldering braid" - works well with a little practice.
Tried it repeatedly as you suggested, how every when I flash it runs the black screen and rolls through the script yet never connects... Any ideas?
I have been trying to get this done fore months! Thanks
I have managed to flash the New Basic3 from your other video but don't want to replace all of my old Basic's
I wonder if it would be possible to flash so switch works with the hive system ?
I don't know much about the Hive system. Sounds like a scary group of Super Villains.
Does Hive use MQTT? If it does then it'll work with tasmota.
DrZzs i use the mechanical switch, cant seem to find the capacitive touch buttons made for the NZ market. May be one day...
OMG wish I seen this before using the Arduino method.... If you just want to flash a standard sonoff file and not play in the coding space this is the way to go....
Can the soldered holes be drilled with a thin dremel drill bit?
yes. Check the other comments. I think someone said a 0.9mm bit just using your fingers to spin it worked for them. Others have used soldering wick. Lots of options :)
I want to program the sonoff for times on/off using the cron format then use it standalone, is it possible??
Can I flash sonoff with tasmota firmware with raspberry Pi? Thanks for help
Another great (and updated) vid. I suspect that this won’t work using a Mac as COM ports (as far as I know) aren’t detected. Am I correct?
yes, that's true.
When selecting Firmware in the ESPEasy Flasher should sonoff.bin be displayed as:
.\sonoff.bin
Any clues?
@DrZzz - I have noted an apparent error message when it attempts to flash:
Warning: espcomm_send_command: wrong direction/command: 0x00 0x08, expected 0.01 0x08
It then tries a few more times to flash (in a matter of moments) and then I get the ‘flash failed’ box appear. Does this mean anything to you?
maybe swap the Rx/Tx and try again (hopefully you haven't already tried that). It would make sense with a "wrong direction" error.
DrZzs - I’ve definitely got them correctly placed at the moment (as in Rx to Tx and Tx to Rx). Are you suggesting trying Tx to Tx and Rx to Rx?
Is the configuration data in non-volatile memory? Is the configuration retained even when mains power is cut off to the Sonoff?
yes, the config is retained after power down.
Thanks for the info floating head
DrZzs I like to avoid the cloud as well. After flashing what app should I use.
Hi DrZzz, I recently brought a Sonoff iFan02 module and I see that few people have successfully flashed it using tasmota. Hence I am not pro, I am hesitant to do it without detailed info. Can I suggest that you make a video on it, please!! Thank you.
Yes! It is on my list of videos I hope to do soon.
@@DrZzs Thank you!
@@DrZzs Hi. Would you be doing one soon? Nobody has done a good tutorial on this. Again, thanks for all the great videos.
DrZzs yes, please! Would love an ifan02 flashing tutorial. Tried the OTA method, but wouldn't connect.
The Tasmota github page seems to have been changed. NOw there is no sonoff.bin file anywhere to be found. Which bin should i use for the sonoff basic? Cheers
They changed it to tasmota.bin
on the releases page they list what the different .bin files contain.

there's the clip :)
I am having the same problem as Brooklyn_UAV. While sonoff is connected to my computer, it works great. When I move it, it will not connect.
dang. I wish I knew what to tell you.
Is there anything about this on the Tasmota github Issues page?
Hi ! I flashet this firmware to all my sonoff devices. It worked great but when I woke up today, all my devices have lost their IP-adresses so I am not able to connect to them and therefore I can not use them. They work if I manually press the buttom though. Any ideas ?
Can you scan your wifi network and find them? If you get the new IPs you can go to a web browser and see if they work.
Will it still works with the eWelink app???
Why do you use 5.14? Trying to use a DHT22 on my sonoff basic running 5.9.1 and it’s not working correctly only DrZzzs showing up every now and then with the temp/humidity info then it goes away, done this to 3 sonoff basic with same result using SonOTA starting to think this is the issue here ?
Does the sonoff work otherwise? relay etc?
yes i have it working in homekit using your SonOTA tasmota tuturial and HAP-NodeJS...... so now i downgraded to 5.1.4 because i wouldn't let me upgrade to 6.1.1, the temp/humidity worked basically fine but then i went to change sonoff friendly name... aftter hitting save the sonoff is now dead/unresponsive...weird so now i have no sonoff under 1.6 firmware :( cant use SonOTA so i brought a FTDI FT232 instead of a FT232RL as it was at my local jaycar.... i cant get it to work they look pretty much the same :(
Where do you get other ESP8266 bin files for my ESP8266 board? What is the baud rate for USB connection for generic ESP8266 board?
you can still use the sonoff.bin file for D1mini or NodeMCU or any ESP8266 board.
I get the NodeMCU flash okay. But when I try the WeMo Mini, I have a problem with "connect failed to domus1:1883, rc-2 Retry in 10 sec..." in the Termite terminal. Any idea why? Great job flashing the Tasmota..
I have to be honest.. not a huge fan of the floating head :P but info is good. Shot man! :D
ha! thanks. I've pretty much stopped the floating head gag. Occasionally I'll use it at the end of a video, just as a nod to the past. Now what am I gonna do with this bright green turtle neck!??!
@@DrZzs haha. Thanks for the reply :) Etsy? ;)
I just want to program a simple timer, will the sonoff module keep the time when it is offline?
I believe it will. You have to make sure to set the time correctly. I haven't used the Timer functions. Here's a link to the relevant commands:
