Only the Stones would invite guitarists to a tryout, tape the tryout, and sell it. Pretty hilarious really.

The Black and Blue is underrated. The lead solo on Hand of Fate is Wayne Perkins. A beautiful clean lead reminiscent of folks like Don Felder from the Eagles. Jagger’s gritty voice is classic on this cut with the usual Richards rhythm licks. Hey Negrita and Hot Stuff shows off their funk persuasion.

@daleclark7127 - I agree 100% that B&B is a very underrated album. I rediscovered my love for it recently and added Hand of Fate, Hey Negrita and Crazy Mama to my playlist. (Stones have been my favorite band since I was 9 years old - I’ll be 61 in a couple months 🤘)

last year they came out with "Blue and Lonesome"- an overlooked blues album. Mick's voice at his age just kills.
    A truly astonishing record.

Yes it is. Howlin’ Wolf’s “Commit a Crime” gives me chills, and Clapton picks up Richards’ Gibson on “Everyone Knows About My Good Thing”. But the whole album is great.

What are you talking about ….. “Wiki” this whole album is GOLD !!!! Every track ! No Lie
(1976) true Stone’s fans would agree 🎸 Hot Stuff is track 1
    Memory Hotel is track 4
Fool To Cry is track 7
    ……tucked in neatly between “It’s Only Rock’ n Roll (1974) & “Some Girls” ((1978) ❤️

I think it's a great Stones album - very funky, some reggae influence coming through too. Critical opinion sometimes gets it really wrong, like on Macca's first few albums - I'd always heard how rubblish they were...until I had a chance to hear them for myself!

Glad you liked it Lee. I agree, that was a seriously good Jagger vocal and I guess you could argue that with the Stones putting down a tight rhythm, it didnt matter much who was playing lead.

That dirty, deep rhythm riff and fill is another Richards signature that he continued to use throughout the rest of their catalog. I like The Stones deep cuts as much as I like their singles, in some cases even more. Winter is great deep cut from Goats Head Soup album.

ppl didn't like Black and Blue when it came out, but it's more than stood the test of time. Not considered a classic stones cut, but would be the top song in most bands discography. shows how great the stones are

Only the Stones, who are notoriously cheap, would invite a man to try out for the lead guitar position and then record and sell the tryout! It works, though, and this album, though there is some stuff I’d skip, is underrated. The most impressive thing is that their run of easy greatness where they could do no wrong is over, people are sick of them, they’re tired, worn-out, trying to kick addictions, various police departments are investigating them, their lead guitarist quits, and still they manage to put together this album. The last song, “Crazy Mama”, I also love, and “Hot Stuff” is a pure funk groove that they occasionally get back to. As far as I know, the three people who’ve recorded with both the Beatles and Stones are Eric Clapton, Nicky Hopkins, and Billy Preston, who’s all over this album and came up with the walking bass line on “Miss You”, the star single from the next album, the wonderful ’Some Girls’.

Black and Blue used to be quite dismissed but these days it's getting a more fair treatment in general (just like The Who's By Numbers another mid 70s record by a classic band). I think it's a very interesting, different album, quite funky and with some cool rockers and ballads. So, quite balanced, more focused than It's Only RNR.

He had quit the band over a year prior to Black and Blue. No Mick Taylor on here. Ron Wood filled in for their 1975 American tour and would officially join the Stones in 1976 when the Faces broke up. He's here but not on a full-time basis nor does he handle the solos. This album had lead guitar guests that were in a way auditioning but neither Wayne Perkins (who does the solo here and on "Fool To Cry" plus one of the better ones on any Stones LP with his solo on "Worried About You" which was shelved until Tattoo You in 1981) and Harvey Mandel (who solos on "Hot Stuff" and "Memory Motel").

The album is solid IMO. Wikipedia as usual is full of sh!t. The video for Hey Negrita is especially hilarious with Jagger looking sort of like a new wave Carmen Miranda! Hilarious! And yet cutting edge as the Stones always were. Is it one of the best Stones albums? No. But by the same token there’s not a bad song on it IMO.

Yeah, not the greatest Stones album, imo. But it's the Stones so even on their worst album, their going to have a couple of great spngs & Hand Of Fate is one of them, great song.
Other stand outs are Memory Hotel & A Fool To Cry.
Lee, check out Wild Horses from the Sticky Fingers album. It's another ballad, but it's my favorite Stones song. Just a great song on a fantastic album.
