it's wild to me that drag queens are now controversial when you couldn't go without seeing one on TV and movies in the 80s, 90s and 2000s. especially here in the uk.

Drag queens aren't "controversial" in itself. For first off, in the 80s,90s, 00's they knew they were MEN in women's clothing and most were just comedians dressed up. Now it's way more than that and evolved to pure delusion to "oh that's a woman"...not they're not. They're men dressed in clothing and a bunch of makeup. Secondly, not all drag shows are kid friendly, really none of them are at all especially if it's a comedy show often times the sequence is very vulgar. When you bring in these acts into schools, its inappropriate for a number of reasons including their attire. As well as people feeling at though it's ok to bring children to drag shows for adults while they innact* sexual intercourse, speak vulgarity, and are dressed unbelievably unacceptable for a child's eyes to see. And the argument of "well they're just going to see it anyways/someday" is such a poor sentiment and kinda disturbing because why would you desensitize a child willingly or take the innocence from a child just bc "they'll see it anyways" . Not saying it's you bur alot of people think that way, utterly disturbing.

@@markrmznyc__ How so? Because like with all performances, there is a level that is appropriate and then there's a level that's not. Drag in of itself is not innapropriate as the core of it isn't sexual at all and it has its roots in a lot of carnie showmanship and even in Jewish tradition.
I have been to both age appropriate and 18+ drag performances and the differance is beyond obvious. It's like saying that taking your neice to see The Nutcracker is the same as taking her to see The Pillowman or Titus Andronicus. To say all of it is innapropriate for children shows a limited understanding of what it is.
At the 18+ shows, I had to be carded several times and the place had to have no windows open at all. At the drag story time I went to with my niece, the drag performer was dressed as the bean stalk from Jack and The Bean Stalk with a custom wig to boot. I don't think those are the same.
Not to mention how even when I was little, pantomime dames would come in and read stories at libraries and other events because that's tradition around here.
Ru Paul's Drag Race or Pink Flamingoes are in no-way represntative of the entirety of drag but instead just the adult orientated entertainment of the artform that isn't suitable for kids. Like most entertainment.
The idea that it's all unsuitable for kids stems from paranoid homophobia more than reality.
