What If The Spanish Armada Had Won? The US Would Not Exist & The World Would Speak Spanish Today

  • James Hanson is joined once again by Rear Admiral Dr Chris Parry and ‪@Drachinifel‬ to discuss one of history's most storied naval fleets and failed conquests. The Spanish Armada set sail for England with the hope of invading, removing Queen Elizabeth I and reinstating Catholicism.
Yet the English were ready - engaging and pursuing them in the Channel. It meant the Spanish were forced to flee into the North Sea and navigate back home via the Northern British and Irish coast. It was disastrous, leading to many ships being lost, and the conquest of England was over. This is History Undone.

Drach is perfect for these types of show: He truly knows the material; he is well spoken, and well organized, and is an excellent presenter.

Specially since this seems to be the 2nd video shot that day, notice same cloth and slept over hairstyle as in the Jutland episode xD

@@hernerweisenberg7052 Seeing that same hair again had me thinking that it was a purposeful hairstyle and that maybe I don't know cool young kids fashion anymore or that maybe his wife had cut his hair. But I think your interpretation makes more sense!

I started following Drach back when he was still doing his single ship videos with the AI narration.
Now, he's becoming one of the go-to historians for naval history.
      What a rise.

Episode suggestion: What if Edward had a better wingman at the party he met Wallis Simpson at, who said to him "nah mate that one's trouble"

What if Henry had gone for the other sister? What if Harold had ducked? Endless what ifs and about as relevant as these faux history broadcasts.

Edward was a weak character who seems to have liked to be dominated so he probably wouldn't have listened but John Masters, the Ghurka officer in WW2 and writer later, said a lot of younger people couldn't see why Edward couldn't marry whoever he liked even if she had been divorced. Probably a good thing he was deposed otherwise we might be living under Hitler's successor.

In the event of a Spanish victory, the alternative future of every county is discussed except, of course, Ireland. Some things never change!

Regarding the differences in strategy: Spanish one broadside and then board, English, stand off and fire, it was my understanding that it went beyond that. IIRC, it was an article in Military History Quarterly, some time ago, that pointed out that the the Spanish didn't have the block and tackle to run the guns in and out of the firing port, to allow for reloading the cannons. So if the Spanish wanted to reload their guns after firing them, someone would have to crawl out on the gun barrel to attempt that. This effectively meant that they could only fire their guns once in any battle.
The English did have the block and tackle system, and so could stand off and fire multiple times.
    So technology lead to tactics.

I saw a similar documentary that pointed out the same issue. In that one, they noted that some of the Spanish guns were too long to be pulled far enough out of the gun port to reload, so they'd have to pull the gun back and then rotate it with muscle power some number of degrees so they could get the necessary clearance.
That encumbrance limited the Spanish guns to firing a few round an hour, while the English ships could fire a round every few minutes.

If the Spanish had successfully landed an army, the big unknowable would be the loyalty of the English people. It was only 50 years since England had been a devoutly Catholic country, if anything more so than the continent, being further away from the Vatican and its excesses. Elizabeth herself had little faith in their loyalty to her and brutally suppressed Catholicism, executing Catholic priests who were discovered. The number of secret Catholics who might have supported Philip was simply unknown at the time, and can only be guessed at now.

Another aspect to consider. How would the history of the far East (including India) been different with no substantial contact with the English, French, Dutch or the U.S.? How would Japan have developed?

The Portuguese (and to a lesser extent the Spanish) were already there. The English, French, Dutch etc were trying to muscle in on the spice trade themselves. Goa, Moulacca, and Macau were Porto colonies well before any of the others got there.

Hello Drach from Halifax, Nova Scotia! If the English still held the Pale of Calais in 1588 would it have played any significant part in the battle?

44:40 If Phillip was anything like Hitler or Stalin, commanders would never have risked doing anything other than what they were ordered. "I obeyed your orders" and hoped for the best.

Wonder what would have happened if the Spanish had landed in Ireland, They could have recruited friendly Irish catholics into their army and used Ireland as a base to invade England

The main historical consequence is that, if the Hapsboyrg kept ruling Spain and South American, they would have won 11 World Cups (Brazil 5, Argentina 3, Uruguay 2, Spain 1).

The Russians were coming accross from Asia. They made it as far as San Francisco. The gold rush could have been Russian speaking.

The Russians were never in San Francisco. The Presidio was established in 1769. The Russians didn’t get to Alaska until 1799.
      So no Russian Gold Rush.

Harry Turtledove (?) wrote an alternate history novel based on the premise of an Armada victory.

Best of this excellent series so far with major implications if the Spanish had been successful in 1588 - no British empire, no 13 colonies and no President Trump. From my terrace I look at the River Tagus, downriver from Lisbon, and try to imagine what those 141 ships looked like on the way to the Channel. Hanson, Parry and their guests bring history alive.

Shakespeare writes a play based on Boudica and the uprising throws out rhe Spanish. Or so Turtledove thinks.
