After breaking his chain right at the start gate, Aaron Gwin heads off for a run that will go down in the DH history books. Probably one of the most memorable MTB Downhill runs ever!
This was the scene of the greatest UCI World Cup downhill race victory of all-time. Sure, we've had big winning margins and wild riding, but never before has a rider snapped a chain at the start of his or her run and go on to take the victory. Leogang 2015 produced one of the most breathtaking, nail-biting and spectacular races of that season.

I mean it would be fun to do that now anyways. Kinda like skiing. Now pedaling, just a nice smooth flow down the hill and try to maintain the momentum and not crash.

I know exactly what happened in his head " Well I guess I need to brake less". It happened to me on many on a few occasions on the trail. Went faster through some sections because I knew there was a uphill after.

It's crazy to realize how much more potential you've got when you have to rail into the turns like that when you know braking isn't a option. Gwin definitely went for it!
Not to take anything away from him, Harts run in the rain is the most inspiring for me.

I watched this over and over since 2015 - Iost my chain few times in the mountains and I always think about Gwin then... :) You do get faster with no chain - smooth is fast.

Apparently it was the chain.

@@ghidfg kick back on the pedals, chain is connected to the rear triangle and when it moves the wheel base gets longer on most linkages. Some are made so the wheel goes straight up etc. but the chain is a fixed length, the derailleur helps though.

If you think this is the greatest dh run in history you are a total clown. This is easily smashed by Sam Hill at Val Di Sole in 2008, Danny Hart at Champery 2011 and Sam Hill again at Champery. Yea this was good but greatest ever.....not even close
No, Kavarik’s Fort William run was the greatest downhill run in the sports history. A subpar rider Neko Mulally got 4th at world Champs without a chain. Gwin’s run wasn’t that great because of that fact. But willing by over 14 secs, now that’s greatness
I met Aaron in Australia and he gave me a bunch of his gear and he still rides chainless to this day by choice now it's amazing

I nowhere near this sort of class, but when I broke my chain I found myself going faster on the trail so I didn't have to push the uphill bits.
Backsiding everything and theres a few bits where he goes to pedal and is like "oh yea no chain"
Probably helped not pedaling because when you pedal the bike swerves side to side which slows you down a second or two.
Probably an intentional tactic.
