WALKS IN DORSET at SEATOWN & EYPE MOUTH (4K)

- In this episode of my series “ Walks in Dorset”, I take a 4 mile circular walk from Seatown (on the Jurassic Coast) to Lower Eype and back. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I park my car at a car park in Seatown (cost £6 for the day) and have a quick look around the village - basically The Anchor Inn and a few houses as well as a beach (which does not allow dogs between 1st May & 30th September).
My walk starts with an uphill section along the South West Coast Path towards Doghouse Hill & then Thorncombe Beacon where I get to enjoy some stunning views both out to sea & inland.
I drop down to Eype Mouth and have a wander along the beach (which allows dogs all year round) before having an exploration through the prety village of Lower Eype.
After visiting St Peters church on the brow of a hill (sadly it is not open), I head Westwards uphill and across meadows to Down House Farm and then back to the South West Coast path at Thorncombe Beacon for my return journey.
My final destination is the Anchor Inn at Seatown.
XXX NB: The cliffs along this stretch of the Jurassic Coast are unstable - indeed there have been cliff collapses recently. So it is important to ensure that you do not walk too closely to the edge of the cliffs and keep to the public footpaths.

This is my favourite place and go to place to not think about work and problems of the world .... a great place to chill and clear your mind ! Thanks for the video .
Thank you & indeed thanks for watching.
I can almost hear the Skylarks❤️
It is so beautiful around there Richard.
You like all my favourite old pubs ,had many a good night in there playing music 😊😊😊
A great place to end the walk!
You did well Dave very hilly but fantastic views, looks a very pretty place...thanks for another great video
Thanks Del. The scenery is quite spectacular along that stretch of the coast.
Glorious views on this walk Dave, thankyou very much !
Thank you. That part of the Jurassic Coast is quite stunning.
We love watching you and Logan! We will be visiting Dorset, from America, at the end of April. Your videos have been very helpful!
Thank you Melissa. I hope that you have a great time when you visit (and the sun shines every day!). Thanks for watching.
I find that your walks are most informative and enjoyable thank you for all your hard work!
Thank you Geoffrey & indeed thanks for watching.
I've watched this video several times now and you speak brilliantly too,
Thank you Alan :)
Great video, Dave. The video quality is outstanding.
Thank you Roger. :)
Hi Dave, I'm just echoing what the others have said but what a great place and amazing walk. It looked like a strenuous 4 miles of walking that ... not sure I acould do it.. my brother walked the south west coast path a year back . It took two months I think. Many thanks for your channel Dave. it's one of the very best I reckon.
Thank you David. It was a fairly undulating walk for sure but worth if for those views!
Loved this! I also love watching Logan running along looking from side to side, taking in his surroundings 💕
Thank you. Yes, Logan loves exploring as well!
lovely film thank you🌸🌼.. know Seatown well.. going again in Mid ..May
Thank you. I hope that you have good weather for your visit.
Thank you Dave as always. Is it better to walk backwards downhill?
Walk Backwards - It may seem counterintuitive to walk backwards downhill. But stop and think about it! You are not putting your joints under undue strain or stress. The leg muscles and joints are working in the same way as when walking uphill, just in reverse. How about that? Give it a try Dave and you'll have to give Logan the same training.
Thanks for the advice Martin - I shall give it a go (although what Logan will make of it - I don't know!)
I find walking downhill far tougher on the knees than walking uphill. I've not tried it backwards, though it sounds like it makes sense. It is, after all, what one does on a ladder, or on the steep steps aboard a ship etc.
Had a lot of good times in that pub 😊😊😊
They serve a fine ale!
Good job Dave. 👍
Thank you and indeed thanks for watching.
This brought back memories of family camping holidays in the 80’s at Seatown. We had a big frame tent but I can see it’s mostly static caravans now. We looked forward to drinks and basket meals at the Anchor Inn and I remember walking up to the top of Golden Cap. Happy memories, thank you Dave and Logan.
The Anchor Inn is a great place to end the walk for sure!
A wonderful coast line walk with stunning views
Thank you Keith. :)
Lovely walk Dave thanks for making the video👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Lee. We were lucky with the weather that day.
amazing views and gorgeous countryside
It is a stunning part of the coast around there, Cath.
Those meadows are a sight for sore eyes, wonderful.
Congratulations for 200 videos, great job!
Thank you Hannu. :)
Great video as always Dave and well earn drink after those hills.
Our favourite place for finding fossils. 😊
Thank you Lee. Yes, I was looking forward to that pint towards the end of the walk!
Hello Dave it was nice to see eype again a really lovely walk thanks Dave God bless from Ralph and Sheila
Thank you both. The views along that section of the coast really are amazing for sure.
Such stunning scenery Dave. That was a joy to watch from beginning to end!
Thank you Mark
Delightful video Dave. The field of blue at 7:00 was probably linseed, once a common sight but sadly now increasingly rare. Best John
Thanks John. Yes, I think you are correct - it was just a bit too far away for my eyesight!
Thanks for another lovely walk Dave and Logan, congratulations on the 200th x
Thank you Jacqueline. :)
Loving your vids matey and am fondly jealous
Thank you Alan. :)
Lovely video especially seeing Logan trotting through the meadow… love the way sighthounds do that ❤
Thanks Lisa. I really loved that meadow - the views were amazing as well.
Lovely video. Thank you
Thank you & indeed thanks for watching.
Wow, a smashing walk. Not sure I could manage that far now, especially uphill, but would love to do part of it, the scenery is superb! I'd wait till next spring to benefit from all the buttercups and blossom! I'd say this walk is the one I have enjoyed watching the most. Thanks for sharing it!
Thank you. Yes, Spring would be a great time for walking that route for sure.
Thank you Dave & Logan...I know this area well as I live these last three and a half years (from Surrey) 25 minutes away, it still looks wonderful and great with all your extra info' too (as I had forgotten some of it). No doubt you know, but there are amazing sunsets on Eype beach, sadly getting ruined with extra signs, bigger car park, so more visitors - but we are a small island, the UK, so at least more people can enjoy the area, I guess! I love Logan, an adorable companion, and I can see you love him very much - KEEP enjoying, both of you and thank you!!! for sharing - Good wishes for lovely adventures :).
Thank you. Logan is a good lad and great company to have on these walks.
Just found you, loved the walk and history. 😊I’m subscribing🐕🙌👣🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾🌾
Thank you Louise and indeed welcome to the channel! I hope that you enjoy the future videos in the series. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Dave
Our lurcher had to put to sleep during Covid (not with Covid) massive medical problems. I do love sight hounds , we have some near us. Thanks again for videos.
Another great walk along the coast. Thanks Dave and Logan. My Grandparents had a caravan holiday in Eype in 1937. Driving from North London with a caravan on tow! Quite a feat back then (we have black and white photos of their caravan holiday in Eype)
Thanks Al. A great place for your Grandparents to have had a holiday I should imagine.
I have walked that stretch of swcp several times and hats off to you as you must have doubled your uphill bits walking back each time to collect the camera!! I have never explored inland and the meadows were stunning. It is cow country though and I can remember sharing my coffee break with the cows on one occasion atop of Thorncombe beacon. Thankfully they were peacefully chewing the cud!!
I reckon that Logan & I have walked most of the section of the SWCP in Dorset now. The views along that part of the Jurassic Coast really are stunning.
Will definitely be doing this one, thank you ❤
I hope that you have great weather when you do your walk.
Hi Dave, Recently did the Seatown Walk. Lovely walk and I agree that downhill sections are tough on the knees as you said. Unfortunately the Anchor wasn’t serving food on the day we were there. Tess thoroughly enjoyed the walk too chasing rabbits all the way. Thanks again for the inspiration.
Thank you John. Glad that you & Tess enjoyed the walk.
It's nowt to do with the council seatown is a private beach
Lovely area Dave. I used to drive on the A35 past Bridport and through Chideock ( awful traffic jam area ) on my way from Eastbourne to North Devon to see my daughter. Now in Devizes which is a great little town and a lot closer to North Devon. Great part of our country from the New Forest to East Devon. Thanks for another brilliant video !
Thanks Geoff. Yes, that A35 can be a "challenge" at times!
Hi Dave, you have a rare knack of metaphorically bringing your viewers along with you. I saw several scenes that I’ve made note of for future painting subjects. The flowers clinging to the cliff at around 13 minutes might be Sea Pinks or Sea Thrift (Armeria maritima). I can’t be sure from your video so it’s just a suggestion. As always thanks for a super walk.
Thanks Mark. I must admit that I am no expert when it comes to wild flowers!
@@DaveFord nor am I but I have some growing in my garden on a fairly exposed position in eastern Scotland.
So lovely - didn't want the video to end! I think the parking charges are a bit steep - I see they've put them all up a £1 on last year's £5 which I thought was a lot then. Alright if you're going for the day, but not if you just want a quick visit.
Thank you Angela. Sadly it seems that parking costs have gone up everywhere - I sign of the times I fear.
The usual high standard Dave, a quite superb walk, and like you say, the countryside is absolutely beautiful. I have been that way once, started at West Bay, on to Eype and Seatown , then a loop back inland to West Bay. Going west is equally beautiful up to Golden Cap, but whichever way you go it's certainly a workout for the lungs and legs! One point I'd like to raise though: being a "northerner" (Bristol) I'd contend that the SW Coast Path actually runs from Minehead to Poole. Just saying.
Thank you. One day I will have to walk the entire length of the SWCP - now that would be a journey!
It certainly would Dave, I've done about 30%, all in separate stages, not in one fell swoop, it's something the younger me promised myself I'd do, alas poor health means it's unlikely to happen. Sadly. But if you did it, you'd have enough video's for a couple of years! You could then put your feet up for a while.
Hello and thank you, I have just found this channel, what great filming. we stayed in EYPE a few years ago in one of the chalets, and did some of the walk you did, it was great to see it all again. there was an old chalet perched on the cliff edge and wondered if it was still there now? will have to go back and definitely go to the Anchor for a pint.!
Thank you & indeed welcome to the channel! I hope that you get to enjoy the future videos in the series. Thanks for watching.
Loving your Dorset walks Dave! So many great ideas to get us exploring beyond the bits we're familiar with.
Thank you Pauline. I hope that you get to enjoy your walks and also have good weather!
Stunning video of an area that I have been to many times but you must be well fit as a whippet to do them hills .
I could still do with losing a pound or two Ian!
@@DaveFord Me too 😉😂
What a beautiful area for your walk and what a glorious day to do it. A few hills to climb as well. Seatown was strangely quiet considering the weather. Tha old sheep dip was interesting. I can't believe it's been used for many a long year. Wasn't much water in that stream to have powered a mill, but then there wasn't so much water extraction in those far off days. That pint looked very welcome.
Yes, we were lucky again with the weather. the sunshine really made the sea look quite Mediterranean!
Spectacular video Mr Logan. Maybe it's my reception or perhaps you've bought yer mate Dave a new lens or software or something?
It was clear as a bell, even on my cheap mobile, perhaps he should buy you more chips!
And that sign on the beach doesn't seem to apply to you, only to Scotties or Airedales or something...
Thank you. Still using the Gopro 10 for the video & Canon Powershot for still photos. It always helps filming on the Gopro if you have a clear, sunny day .... I find that the the picture quality suffers in low light!
Hi Dave! Love your videos and all the details you share. Do you know the name of the white blooming trees are in this video? They are gorgeous!
Thank you Jen. I think those were Hawthorn trees in the distance. Thanks for watching.
Ahh wonderful! They sure packed a punch to the landscape. Just beautiful! Thank you for the reply.
@bobbybigboyyes Great to hear that Jen has started making some videos now. I hope she has a lot of fun & enjoyment making them.
