      perfect pitch is actually easily acquired through the first few years of life if nourished. Many people lose it overtime if no practice and they get into relative pitch.

    Wow!! As a music teacher I can tell you not only is perfect pitch rare, but to be able to sing in perfect pitch is exceedingly rare. I wondered for a long time if she had perfect pitch. I have a piano student with the same gift. I also have a friend who sees colors associated with each pitch. Our God is amazing. Have to wonder what crazy adventure lies ahead for this sweet one!

      Kathy Shelley seeing colors associated with a note is called tone-color synesthesia. Makes the world of music more beautiful. 💕 Claire could be synesthestic. Wouldn't be surprised. Most people don't know they are until they stumble upon it.

    • @GopherwoodExpress
      @GopherwoodExpress 6 років тому +22

      I have synesthesia and perfect pitch too. I wouldn't be surprised either if Claire has it. The tricky thing about synesthesia is describing it with words to people who don't have it. It can come off as sounding crazy sometimes, which for me already being a quiet person means I haven't told many people about it and sometimes it can be a lonely gift. But there are tests for synesthesia as well as perfect pitch that you can take if you want "proof", even just to prove it to yourself.

      This is magical to watch. I don't ever know how to explain it but I think somehow perfect pitch is tied to memory...?like you remember exactly how a song sounds down to the key it is played in. Technically perfect pitch is identifying a note by the letter name...but since she is young and may not know the notes by letter after or how to read music this is also concrete proof of perfect pitch in my estimation. In time she will learn it. I hope sincerely that her perfect person pitch will be merciful that is that she will not be miserable everytime she hears something out of tune.
      I used to work with people who had dementia and there was a music teacher I became friends with in that job. She lost so much to her dementia but you could plunk her down in front of a piano and she could play anything. A thing I thought was weird was that she couldn't always remember song titles but if I sang or hummed part of the song for her she could almost always pick up what I sang to her and often!!! She could come in on the same key that I was singing? While my pitch is pretty good I don't think it is perfect....that is I dont think I gave her the correct key every time but there she was jumping in on the piano on key with my singing. Any thoughts on whAt that means?

    I thought it was really interesting how she described your pitch as being 'one block too high' as it gives an insight as to her conceptual understanding of music. I wonder whether she would be able to transpose a song if you asked her to sing a song 'one block higher/lower' but didn't give her the backing music first? Might be a cool experiment?

      this one guy has perfect pitch,and he can't play the one block higher note on keyboard, lol.... check it out!

    • @harmony6643
      @harmony6643 6 років тому +6

      @@ronaldfrank1442 True, but that is because when playing that piano after it was re-tuned he still saw and pressed the same keys on the piano he always did.
      Basically, for instance, he saw the key E on the epiano and when he pressed it he expected to hear the note E (which is what usually happens when he presses the key E) and, thus, was confused when it didn't sound like what he'd expected to hear.
      So he wasn't transposing the piece, he was playing it using the same keys on the keyboard, it was just the keyboard that was tuned to a different key.
      This actually makes a big diference. Maybe try to imagine it like this: If you came into a dark room and pressed the light switch, you'd expect a normal, yellowish-white light to turn on, right? But if, instead, there was ... let's say red light all around, it would throw you off and distract you for a moment because you'd be wondering about why something isn't the way it usually is - and the way it is supposed to be - and therefore, for your brain, it would feel wrong.
      This is also the reason why many musicians with perfect pitch have no trouble transposing music by ear but have lots of trouble transposing while sight-reading or have trouble playing Eb- or Bb-Instruments: Because they see one note on their sheets and, by seeing it, already have an expectation as to what it will sound like, but then, when the play it, the sound they hear is a different one from the one they'd expected and already heard in their mind, which, again,seems unexpected, wrong and confusing to them.
      Also, many musicians with perfect pitch tend to focus less on the relationships BETWEEN the notes, thus the intervals and relative pitch, and more the notes themselves (excluded from one another), which it why it keeps throwing them off and why it happens more easily that they play wrong intervals while sight-reading.
      There's different kinds of musicians with perfect pitch, however: To some, transposing comes very easily, almost naturally, to others, it just feels wrong and confusing, because each pitch or key also has a distinct feeling (or personality, if you like) and playing a piece in a different key changes not only how high or low it sounds but also the overall characteristics of the piece and. It is as if fire was suddenly cold and ice warm. You automatically connect the concept of "ice" wih the concept of "cold" in your brain, so if you were to touch a block of ice, you'd expect it to feel cold and it wouldn't at all feel like ice to you if it was warm instead, even if the texture and the shape and the look and everything else stayed exactly the same. Likewise, a piece in a different key would feel completely different and maybe even weird or wrong to a musician with perfect pitch, even though everything else (the intervalls, chords, harmonics, etc). stayed exactly the same.
      Sorry for the long text ... At least I hope I could help explaining that a bit better ...

    Perfect pitch or absolute pitch is a rare phenomenon and Claire definitely has it - I've noticed this before in previous videos - she will start to sing a song in the correct key without having had any previous pitch reference. It's not something you can acquire, it's something that you are born with. People often confuse perfect pitch with being 'pitch perfect'. Claire is always pitch perfect as well - but this only means that she's always in tune when she sings.
    It's endearing, that since she is so young, she doesn't yet realise that having perfect pitch is not normal. She thinks that she's only able to pitch correctly, without reference, because she's heard a song so many times before.

      MarsLos10 the perfect pitch they described in the video isn’t exactly the musical dictionary definition of perfect pitch. she still was flat at times, but she’ll be better as she grows and perfect pitch is entirely up to how she can name pitches from a piano or pitch pipe

    • @MarsLos10

      Ryley Douglass I guess she eventually will learn the names of the pitches and as she grows up she will develop her gift more and more, to the point where she will be as Dylan Beato (check him out), or if she doesn't care about pitches' names, she can still hear a note and say "that's how this song starts".

    This is an amazing and ingenious way to test for perfect pitch!! It’s great because it can be done super early on in musical development (as seen obviously) and it requires little to no prior knowledge of any kind of music theory!! As stated around 2:55 Claire was able to recognize that her dad was sharp (and by how much - a whole step) before she had even learned the music theory and the vocabulary to articulate what she meant. And even though she was able to accurately sing each song in the correct key to prove herself, in theory this test could even be given to someone who might not even have the vocal dexterity or know-how to correctly articulate the right key - they could still recognize it as right or wrong even if they can’t physically sing the other, correct version.

    For anyone who may be wondering, perfect pitch is NOT the ability to sing perfectly on key. You may be able to do that but that doesn’t mean you have perfect pitch. Perfect pitch is the ability to name what key a song is being played/sung in and also to be able to name individual notes and chords by ear. This is speaking from my experience as someone who has it. I cannot sing perfectly on key but I do have perfect pitch!

    • @bradbrad247
      @bradbrad247 6 років тому +135

      PianoDiva24 perfect pitch is actually defined as the ability to recognize or reproduce any pitch heard. It's also sometimes referred to as absolute pitch. One does not need to have every chord/note memorized or be able to name them to have perfect pitch. One also does not need to be able to reproduce pitches perfectly. So long as one can do either or both of these things it is considered perfect (or absolute) pitch.

    • @pamelamason530
      @pamelamason530 6 років тому +48

      I agree with the bradbrad reply. You can be able to reproduce and identify pitches by sound, but you might not be able to name that something is in E major or that the note I’m playing is a Bb/A# if you haven’t learned Western music notation.

    • @PianoDiva24
      @PianoDiva24 6 років тому +19

    I'm a private voice and piano teacher and I have to say your daughter has an ABSOLUTELY darling little voice. I will say though, what she has is excellent pitch MEMORY rather than perfect pitch. I have good pitch memory myself, but when I have a cold or stuffy/swollen sinuses, sometimes I'm a little flat in my intonation.... It would be interesting to find out if Claire(?) has the same issue. I like this game!! I need to try this out with my voice students!!! Blessings!

      Deliseo Studio Check out his new video- she has perfect pitch as well as amazing relative pitch!

    • @xnlover
      @xnlover 6 років тому +1

      I agree. Claire clearly has excellent pitch memory, being able to know whether what her dad is singing is at the same pitch or same relative pitch to what she has heard before and being able to reproduce what she has heard at the proper pitch. She probably also has perfect pitch; but that would be shown in a bit more sophisticated way, based on naming a pitch which then she produces accurately without having heard it prior to that, or showing her a piece of music that she then sings at the proper pitch without aural prompting from another singer or an instrument. It's certainly a talent worth cultivating; though, as at least one responder indicated, it can drive both the recipient of that talent as well as others somewhat crazy. For example, I know some who have perfect pitch who, when they are reading music in one key but hearing it performed in another, simply go bonkers at the difference and cannot listen for long to the series of "wrong notes" being performed. They either stop listening or stop looking at the music.

      @@xnlover Have you seen the other video of her where she shows her perfect pitch? :)

    • @xnlover
      @xnlover 6 років тому +3

      Yes. That video comes much closer to showing she has perfect pitch. I didn't doubt she had that faculty, only questioned whether that game showed that she did. I don't have perfect pitch; but there are certain musical pieces, the melodies of which I can begin humming; and upon playing a recording of the piece, I discover that I had hummed it beginning at the correct pitch. With most pieces with which I'm familiar, I can't do that - only with some, and always only the same pieces. Somehow, my brain has registered the pitches of those pieces indelibly in my memory, and I can bring them to mind whenever I wish. Claire is very gifted. I hope she finds a way to make good use of those particular gifts.

    According to statistics 1 in 10,000 have absolute (perfect) pitch. I have perfect pitch and because I am an adult and trained musician I can tell you the note name of any note played. When I remember the pitch of any song it tends to be that I mentally made a note of the name of the key that I identified the last time I heard it. Then I use that knowledge to recall the correct pitch. What is amazing about this girl is that she remembers the pitch without having the technical knowledge to explain it. That is phenomenal memory. That is what amazes me the most as well as having perfect pitch. (She also has a lovely voice and seems like a lovely girl and has a great relationship with her dad.)

    It is easy to see that Claire is *really* into music. Does she plan on learning an instrument when she is older? I think she would totally pick up gutair or a stringed instrument. But don't rush her into doing instruments, kids typically stick with something when they pick it. You Crosbys are doing a great job because I can tell that Clarie chooses to sing and make music.

    Rewatching is still so fun. But then I got to fight for your loss, daddy crosbey. The song you chose, were female's pitch. If you haven't heard the song in a long time, you will unconsciously lower the pitch. So basically that wasn't a fair fight, but Claire dominated the pitch of all songs like a queen. One word, talented.

    I've heard of little kids being more likely to get perfect pitch when they learn music young due to brain plasticity. This was fun.
