  • This is a lecture/discussion on my experiences selling at various venues. I offer a review of the types, suggestions for success plus tips for judging the quality of a market and it's customers. I cover a wide range of types with an emphasis on the niche of the craft I build. But with that in mind I'm sure you can judge what is relevant to what products you sell.

See, this is the kind of open, honest, and down to earth information and experience that is strangely so rare to find. Answering the real questions without the fake flashy sales pitch of getting rich quick or easy answers. As an aspiring woodcarver/woodcrafter I really appreciate you making this vid, thanks bud!

best analogy I've heard - marketing is the gas pedal that drives the business. Pricing is the brakes.
Market enough (advertising, name, etc) and you get busy. Too busy? raise prices.

Wow that’s great. I would like to make high end contemporary furniture. Not complex. Thinking “Four Eyes” construction. My market would be in the Greenwich area of CT. and into Manhattan. Coffee tables for $2500.00 or more. However I have to make a name for myself which will take awhile. But if I present myself as a exclusive furniture maker it might work.

Volume is low on your new setup. Since it went up to a good level when you took your glasses off and looked down 49 seconds, I think it's just mic position.

Some good information. I will say I think he got screwed by some stores and thats a shame. I have a few I deal with, but I have contracts to deal with those ugly issues of loss/theft on consigned items. And im fortunate enough that they use the information i give them to sell my product.

Great video! Sound quality is good but the camera not so good. I prefer your previous setup. Yesterday was my very first time that I have sold any of my work out in the public and it was at our local farmers market. I had a great time and did sell some of my work which happens to be woodturning. Your channel has inspired me to go to the next step by selling my craft. It was such a natural high to share my passion with others.

I became jaded with direct sales. I used to work the Christmas season for a friend at a local mall. Hated those 'customers' who came in and enjoyed trying to talk down to me telling me how they could get the same thing in Mexico for $5. I would reply 'I did buy it in Mexico for $5, the trip there cost $1000.' They would always respond that my costs didn't matter. Then I'd toss their ass out of the store. Half of them would send in a proxy to buy the item later.

Well having to record that 5 times must have been a pain but it must have helped with being able to get your thoughts organized as that was a great presentation. Audio level was too low with the lav and if you are going to use the lav I would suggest also running it through an audio compressor if your software has one (or switch to Resolve if it doesn't, it's free). An audio compressor is kind of like running a hand plane over the sound levels. It knocks down the high spots so you can bring the level up without clipping the loudest parts and it will all be more even. You still need to try not to talk when your head is pointed down, but it will help if you do. When you were sitting down the camera was higher than you and looking down at you. Makes it seem like we're having a conversation with you sitting and us standing which is uncomfortable, for lack of a better word. Try putting the camera right at eye level.

When someone says to me that they saw the same kind of bowl on etsy I tell them they should go buy it because they are not my customer... I am never competitive on price. there is no future in that model... For example I make pens now and then... I get a minimum of $120.00 when they say there are ones just like that on etsy for $40.00 I use an example . VW is a well made german car. and so is Mercedes they both do the same job BUT THEY ARE NOT THE SAME THING... My last figured maple bowl was 13 x 4. I sold it in 2 days for $450.00 so in my model I only have to sell 1 for every 10 that most people do charge what you are worth, the customers will come... never give your craft, art, or work away...

Sean! Brother, you can talk! That's a good thing...this was a good video. Appreciate the advice and ideas! As for your new setup, when you ditched the lavalier, the audio improved immensely. I'm curious as to what your using in lieu of the lav. As for the video, it looks great as far as sharpness and color but the lens looks almost like it is throwing a slight fisheye effect. It's most noticeable at the beginning. You turn sideways a couple of times to point to your whiteboard and you get really wide! If you're that wide, I want my Colts to draft you! Please realize, I'm a retiree from a TV Station where I was a video/ audio engineer for 32 years. I probably notice things most folks don't and this isn't a big deal. Last thing and I'll shut up, do you set up a monitor or perhaps a computer in your booths that are running your UA-cam videos one after the other? If not, think about it, Especially indoors. Outside it can be a little hard to see depending on your booth setup. Love your channel...I always look forward to the next "episode"!

Only because you asked for feedback..... The focus on the lens makes things that are near seem very, very large. Ex. when your hands are nearer the camera, they seem almost comically huge. This does not detract from your message! But it can be a little distracting as you're talking and using your hands. Take that as you will. I will also reiterate, your sound was much better once you ditched the lav. I love your channel, and I only want you to succeed!

The only problem I noticed was with the first mic, which you stopped using. Level was okay but variable, when you looked down the audio went up because your mouth was pointed toward the mic. There was also a sudden jump in audio level when the intro music came on so the balance between that and the mic was off.
Camera seemed to be very good, colour and focus were spot on and picture was always clear but you did not vary much in your position from the camera so there was no need for the camera to adjust focus to compensate for your moves. You did say that you shot this multiple times so obviously you had problems with setup or equipment but those were not apparent to the viewers.

I don’t know why, but your sound on this video is much quieter than normal. The quality of the video is better, crisper so I would keep the camera, but ditch the mic or another one. There is one other unknown in the mix and that is the video software that you used to get the video uploaded, but only time will determine that
