    This is one of the rare cases where even the Video Referee failed to correct a major error in the 3-Ref decision.
    This has to be a Stroke to Miguel--he has neither turned nor faked a swing before his backswing was prevented by Hisham. Furthermore, Hisham makes hardly any attempt to stay clear of the ball's trajectory and the racquet swing.

      It's a let because the player could have played it. Instead he kept walking backwards until his swing was impeded by the player standing behind. Had he just played the ball he could have hit the ball to the bottom right of the court and won the point quite easily. Perhaps not, but he could have played the ball easily enough.

    I think that the issue here is how strange Ashour's shot is. It is rare, to say the least, to see a ball like that in professional play. The ball is very high, and Rodriguez is trying to play it, but I believe that he was surprised at how high the ball was. It isn't that he didn't have room to play, it's that he didn't have room to play without rushing the shot, or playing it with a partial backswing.
    Ashour was moving with the ball--that's the problem with his "clearing." Stroke.

    Stroke ball as he played the shot directly back to where he was standing

    I thought this was a text book "stroke" and was surprised by the decision. This situation happens a lot in squash and so I was looking for some clarification on this - oh well...
    Did interference occur ? Yes
    Could he have played the ball ? Yes
    Was the blocking player making every effort to get out of the way ? No -> Stroke (isn't it??)

    That is the case for a second attempt after an initial swing. In this case there's not even a swing due to interference. Seemed a clear stroke for me.

    Stroke, Ref got it wrong

  • @SquashReferee

    Clear stroke, he is entitled to hold and move backwards insofar as the ball is playable. The swing is prevented before the second bounce. Clear stroke.

    stroke all day, Rodriguez can play it when he wants

    I thought this one was very hard as Rodriguez could have tried to play the ball earlier but he would argue that he had to adjust a bit and that meant moving to the left.

    This one's pretty easy - stroke. He's entitled to move back as far as he likes to play the ball. Looks like Hisham was pretty spent by this point in the match!

  • @bafdias
    @bafdias 11 років тому +1

    There's nothing on the rules forcing you to take a shot at any point. It is a clear stroke. Bear in mind that this is not a second attempt shot, in which case would have to be a let.

    Hit a Bad Shot and get saved by a Let?

  • @Orion3T
    @Orion3T 11 років тому

    Try to pause the video at the point you think he could have safely and comfortably played it. There is no such point. Bearing in mind the ball was coming directly at him, he had no choice but to step backwards as the ball was rising, and at no point before the ball was too close could he safely hit it. However if Red had not been quite so close, it would have been an easy winner as he had pinned himself onto the LH wall. I initially agreed, but close inspection shows it's should be a stroke.

    Definitely a stroke. It takes away from sportsmanship but who wouldn't do the same thing in a competition?

  • @jacobpaint

    It seems that the decision must have been because he moved into the ball then backed up. His path to the ball wasn’t obstructed it was only because he misjudged its trajectory and had to step back.
    I’m not experienced enough to judge these things (why I’m watching these videos) but checked the comments to see if people agreed, it seems pretty much everyone thinks it was a stroke. The profesional referee was watching the same video we are and the issues of contention don’t seem hard to judge in slow mo so I wish it was possible to know why they ruled it a let.

    this is stroke ... is his turn to hit the ball . he can take as many light years as he want before the ball hit the ground

  • @WIMAAC

    I think stroke because Ashour was in the way when he was about to swing (rodriguez was just waiting for a better time to hit)

    • @watching99134

      Rodriguez was fishing for a stroke but that's his right as long as he doesn't move his racquet foward towards the ball (which he doesn't).

  • @SquashReferee
    @SquashReferee 12 років тому +1

    This is clear swing prevention before the second bounce and safety is not a consideration here - stroke is the correct decision and not marginally so; clearly so! This is a textbook decision and involves no complexities. Perhaps spend some time looking through the referee's line of thinking in the rules' appendices.

  • @whatasmile15
    @whatasmile15 11 років тому

    the moral let argument is bollocks as in a situation like this it is the other players fault that he/she put themselves in that position

  • @whatasmile15
    @whatasmile15 11 років тому +1

    Firstly my initial thinking is obviously either a let/stroke and I couldn't give a definite stoke so I would have to give a let to give a definite stroke it would have helped if Rodriguez had kept his racket up then he would have looked like he could have played it at any point after the first bounce, he let his racket fall and just before that point ashour is not in the way of a swing and there's enough space to hit the ball.

    Easy STROKE. Rod did not have freedom to make a reasonable backswing.

    • @conanthanoz19
      @conanthanoz19 9 років тому

      At 0:15 Rodriguez had entire front court, was on the T, and had room for a full swing along with a very trapped opponent ready to be shut out. He backed away from the ball, avoided the easy volley and chased the PLAYER with his hold. Take a look at a freeze frame of 0:15 and try to figure out how Rodriguez could physically make contact with Ashour with his racquet. His chest is facing the right wall, Ashour is at his back, how would his arm end up behind his back on a swing?
      Ashour not only gave Rodriguez space, he crippled his own court coverage to provide it - backing into the side wall. That is a very clear attempt to give room, and it was enough room to play the shot easily and safely - Rodriguez was fishing for a stroke and the ref noticed.
      One of the key rules with a Stroke is that the offending player has to be failing to ATTEMPT to give the other player room to play the shot as well as completely making the shot impossible or dangerous. A Let is when a shot is possible, but inconvenient due to some form of interference. The ref made the right call.

      What he says ^^ No stroke, Rodriguez had plenty of space.

    • @VentureDub
      @VentureDub 8 років тому +1

      +conanthanoz19 I may tend to agree, but one thing irks me about it - Rodriguez can choose to play the shot whenever he likes. Ashour did not allow him that freedom.

    • @conanthanoz19
      @conanthanoz19 8 років тому

      +Venture Although there is minor contact with his back, I do not see this contact as actually impeding the swing or being in the path of the swinging arm/racket. A distraction that can be played through is always a let. "affected" = let. "prevented" = stroke.

    Obvious stroke: without interference rodgriguez shot would be a winner for sure.
    Maybe the referee considered that rodgriguez has enough room to play the shot and he moved back to fish ashour in his racket.
