I've taken one of these with me everywhere from winter camping to 9 days on the Appalachian trail and I couldn't be happier. If anyone has any doubts, rest assured this pack is everything I needed and more.
Hi Gabriel, I am sorry for my late response but I was on holiday and took my time. Thanks for sharing your experience! Weight is something but not everything👍 Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Just unpacked my Kestrel 68 and I like it very much already. Your review made me find a few features I didn't see at first. For example, the compartment for the water system! So thank you for this very complete and helpful review!
Bought this bag on Friday for my 14YO Boy Scout to take camping as an upgrade from his previous REI Youth Tarn 65. This bag holds a much larger sleeping bag, fits him very well at almost 6 feet tall and seems to hold much more then the same size rating REI bag. It looks great, options are awesome, costs about $160 on sale. I love the Osprey brand and I feel that any of the cheap plastic clips can easily be replaced by the user with a more substantial carabiner. Osprey can make you crazy with so many product choices, this was what was available and at a reasonable price locally. Hopefully this pack takes him to Eagle scout and then to college.
Hi MK, Thanks for the nice feedback! And sorry for the late reply but I am traveling and not always online. Enjoy the backpack, the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Great review, i bought mine today. What ive noticed tho, the cushions on the hip belt are a littlebit longer on the M/L one compared to the S/M one. For me it made quite a noticable differnce on my hips, the longer ones where perfectly covering the hipbones which the smaller ones couldn't. The M/L therefore felt way more compfortable even the the other size aspects from the S/M bag would have fitted. So for you smaller ppl out there, you may still want to try the M/L size. Even the salesman in the shop wasn't aware of that difference.
Hi PK, I don't know..... Maybe Osprey did not share it on their channels... Thanks for the sweet comment! Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
I’m obviously late on the ball here, but I’d like to thank you for a very good and thorough review. It was very helpful, and now I can make a well informed desicion about a possible purchase of this backpack. Nice to see that you enjoy trekking in Sweden as well. We who live here are very fortunate to be able to enjoy the nature as freely as we can.
Travelled and hiked extensively around the world with my Lowe Alpine Air Zone Pro 35:45 (which is still going strong!) but looking for an upgrade to take on long camping trips. Was undecided between the Lowe Alpine Diran 55 and the Osprey Kestrel 58, and your review just completely sold me: Osprey it is! Dank je wel for putting the time into making an excellent review. 🙂
Can I ask, I have the Kestrel 48 and found it just a little too small. I have the Patagonia Nine Trail 36 which is massive, probably almost as big as the 48 as you can extend. I have been undecided between the 58 and 68. I wanted something that could do a 3 season couple of nights or a good week plus trip. Whats your opinion on this. I have ordered the 68 but worries its too big. Does it compress well when not full? any opinions would be appreciated.
Thanks for this review, bought a couple weeks ago and used twice, both 8 hour days, really comfortable, the extra features you've explained are a bonus 👍
Nice review. I have Kestrel 48 and really like it. I walked 7-8 days with camping gear and capacity was enough for the length of trek. A backpak is confortable and full of feaures. That`s why I bought Kestrel 68. I do not like "U" opening because as you said the zipper might be broken down someday and it is additionally a point to getting the water. I would put instead a side zipper access and a side zipper pocket as Kestrel 48. The prevoius version of Kestrel 68 did not have "U" opening but I believe it is not avaiable anymore on the market.
Hi DG, I just published the review on the VAUDE ASYMMETRIC 42+8 BACKPACK - ua-cam.com/video/iJslIeSklpk/v-deo.html - maybe you like that video too. It's has a U-zipper but the construction is quite solid and the backpack sustainable. Side zippers... Yes! 😀 Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs.
Hi there, finally getting back to your question, the 58 or the 68 Kestrel. So I ordered a 48 and believe that will be all I need. Too late now but I wish I would have started with the 38 as I am really wanting to go ultra light as possible. Only negative is that it does not have the duffel bag style opening like the larger ones have. Anyhow thanks again for the review and reaching out to me. Happy trails to you
Very informative...Nice location for video. I recently purchased the Kestrel 48 Liter pack. Very similar in features with single side zipper for main compartment access and separate vertical zip pocket. Also with green rain cover. Thank you for the interesting review, much appreciated.
Dear William, Sorry for my late reply but I am traveling and a lot in places without connection. Thank you for the positive comment and charing your experience. Enjoy the Outdoors! Gijs
Thank you Gijs! After watching this detailed review I ordered Osprey Kestrel 68 Backpack from Amazon website (Netherlands) and initially I can confirm your verdict . I'm just confused why the vertical "AirScape " phrase on the back of my backpack has a different font in compare with your backpack and also this vertical phrase is not exactly at center of back Area! Of course I bought with 25€ discount ( as only available option to buy ) and maybe that negligent on phrase position was a reason to apply that discount.
Hi Omid, Thank you for the nice comment. It might also be that they changed the pack since I reviewed it. It happens. But if it fit and is comfy, then you should be fine. Happy hiking days! Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
I took an older version (2011) of this bag with me to Australia and New Zealand for 3 months and it was everything I needed and more! While some of the hanging straps do get annoying at times, you don't notice them when you're walking, and the bag grips you so closely, you hardly know its there.
I've been doing research on this backpack. The osprey site says the main fabric is made of 210 double diamond ripstop nylon. then the euopean osprey site says its made 0f 210 nylon dobby. so I dont know which material the main fabric is made from. probably gonna have to call osprey directly.
Wow, what a thorough review. Thank you! I am wondering if the more modern Archeon 70 is worth the extra €100, though the Kestrel 68 might be already what I need and more. BTW, you won't believe it, I have found the Kestrel 68 for €88 in a Dutch website. I'm still trying to believe it lol.
Very good and extensive review, I hope Osprey was paying attention to your very good findings (e.g. zipper instead of straps for dividing the compartments). Everything else is just amazing for that price, so I'll most likely get one myself soon ;)
Excellent review! Thank you! My first pack was a Kestrel 48. It suited the purpose for an overnighter, but was too small to hold food for a 6 day trip. Now I'm planning a trip requiring a bear cannister and believe it will fit fine in this. However, the only color this comes in is black and I won't buy a black pack, even at this good price, which includes the cover. I will probably go with the Deuter 65 AC Lite.
Hi LightWalker, Thank you for the compliments! Why not in black? And... I see it is available in dark in green... Or is that your black because it is pretty dark green. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Black is not very visible to hunters nor rescue that might be searching for you. It hides dirt well but I like to see the dirt so I know how dirty my pack is and when it needs to be cleaned. Lastly, it's one of my least favorite colors.
You are right there and color is a matter of taste... I don't like it since it sucks for images 😉. But the pack comes with a raincover and raincovers in a bright cover are also available. What about an hunting pack from Fjallraven?
Thanks for the review I've just brought one and it's on the way but I'm worried that I won't gett all my kit in. My current pack is a 100 litre bergen and weighs 4KG unload and I take on average 24KG to 28KG. But just by having the osprey kestrel that will save 2.2KG in weight and I won't be able to take all the crap I don't need so hopefully I will ve a lot more lightweight 😁👍
Thanks for the very thorough review and demo. Being new to backpacking and interested in the Kestrel line I just need to decide whether the 58 is big enough or if I need to go to the 68. Thanks
Hi Jon, What are you going to do with the backpack? I mostly think smaller is better since it makes you make more powerful decisions on what you bring. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Hi Gijs ! great video ! i've became a real believer of the "rigid" backpanel packs... Still loving my Thule Versant ( awesome pack) great video ! Greets, Jeroen
Dear Max, Sorry for my late reply but I am traveling and a lot in places without connection. Thank you for the comment and being a likewise spirit on rigid backpack. Enjoy the Outdoors! Gijs
Thnaks for this very good review. I want to buy the Osprey Kestrel 58L and I wonder if it is identical to the 68L when it come to side pockets, especially, the dual access for small bottles (the pistol grip part).
Dear Walid, According to the manual they should be the same except from volume. See link. Cheers, Gijs cdn.ospreyeurope.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/03/OM_KestrelKyte_S19_ENG.pdf
Hi Jens, Atmos.... Main reason is that is does not have a large U-zipp. Both are pretty bullet proof and still going strong in my life after so many years by now. Thanks for the nice comment! Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Thank you for your reviews. Since you've used and reviewed both Osprey Kestrel and Atmos, which do you prefer? I'm trying to decide for my son for his 12 days trek at Philmont with Boy Scout. How is the ventilation on both? I like the Atmos AG back ventilation, but I like the Kestrel top zipper access. Thanks!
Hi Christine, Sorry for the late reply but I missed your question somehow. Buy a Atmos. The Kestrel is more a backpacking backpack when you are staying in hostels, B&B etc. I would not take it on a trekking because of the big U-zipper. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Hi ! Can I ask you why you'd choose the size Small bag over the M/L? I'm the same height as you, but my back is 18 inches long (50cm). Thank you very much!
Hi Louis, very simple answer... it fitted me and I felt comfortable with it. And my back is a bit shorter and my legs relatively long ;-). Does this answer your question? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
I agree about the crappy ring holder! I have exactly the same in my other Osprey backpack. I had many situations when it detached itself. Now I am just using a regular carabiner for the keys instead of that thing.
Dear Lukasz, Sorry for my late reply but I am traveling and a lot in places without connection. Thanks for the support! I feel like a bully talking about this but it is in the details sometimes. Enjoy the Outdoors! Gijs
Wow, great review! Thank you very much, very informative! May I know if your hydration reservoir is a tight fit in its storage or there's a room to spare for bigger reservoir? If there is more space, by how many cm/in? Thank you!
I am undecided between the Kestrel 58 or 68 I bought the Aether 65 and it has lots of room but is heavier in weight. I want to try and lighten my load. I have a 3 pound tent, the Xtherm MAX underpad and want to be able to do 4 day backpacks in spring and fall and be able also to bring my Chair zero. Do I go with 58 or 68. When I read about the ultralight thru hikers in the USA, I think I should be able to get everything into a 38 lol, but I want the option of room. My total weight including backpack, I want to keep UNDER 35 pounds and closer to 29-30
Hi Macts, Sorry for the late reply, there is lot on my mind at the moment. 38... ultralight, yes possible but I am more on the bit more weight and durable comfy side of things. I think you should be able to pack in a 58... but 68 just gives moire options. Packing less is possible in the 68, packing more in a 58.... Packs don't need to be filled to the brim. Does this help? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Hi Colton, Sorry for the late reply... traveling. Can't say: what season, temp, destination, body length... I'll try to help if you give me some more input. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Hi and thanks for your precious review! If you had to choose between this one and the aether ag 70, which one would you choose? I have already an exos 38 but I'd like to try something different than the back suspension system. Honestly they look very similar .
Dear Massimiliano, Sorry for my late reply but I escaped online for a couple of days ;-). I would need some more info... What do you want to use the backpack for? Let me know and I'll get back to you. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews No worries for the delay :-) My main use would be a mix of overnight hike and photographic trip. I don't plan to stay outside longer than one night so gear would be pretty minimal ( tent, sleeping bag, mat, food and clothes) but my photo gear fullfills a pack very quickly ;-) I really like the big front opening Zip of the kestrel in order to get acces to my gear easily. The aether has only a L zip. Plus I read several times that a non ventilated suspension back system is better when you are carrying heavy loads.... thanks again and happy outdoor!
@@fontamax73 That is what I was looking for: Kestrel for the big U-zip. It makes the pack in general a bit more vulnerable but it makes getting gear out (and in) a lot less of a hassle. And I like the close contact pack with a heavy load better.... But that is very personal.
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews Then I think I'll go with the Kestrel ;-) Now it's just a matter of choosing the right size (I'm 1.86 mt tall . The app tells me I need a S/m. Manual measurement says M/l ?!?!? . )
Great and detailed review! I search for the new backpack for few days of backpacking with a standard equipment, tent etc. Thinking between this backpack and Osprey Aether 70 and Deuter Futura vario 50+10. What will be your choice between them? Thanks!
Petar, Rethink the Deuter. They make fine packs and I reviewed a lot in the past for the magazine I used to work for, but this one... The weight transfer of the carrying system is not that great. I experienced it just trying it at a tradeshow and I checked this with some others and they feel the same in the outdoors. But: like with every pack, try before you buy and go to a shop. We are not al build the same ;-). Cheers, Gijs
Hi Friend! Depending on use: Kestrel for backpacking B&B bus car hike etc and the Atmos for real hikes. Suitcase opening is handy, but I do like one big storage 'bin' better. Does this help? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews Thank you. The Atmos suspension is popular. I sometimes wonder about Aether for carrying heavier loads. It sounds as though you don't do that.
The Atmos is a very wrap around system: love or hate it. The Aether, I had many people asking to review this one but I just didn't get to it. I will ask Osprey.
Agree with you about the U shape zipper but cannot find a pack without that. Would like to have something like the aether pro but smaller version 55L or 60L. Any recommendations?
Hi Daniel, You can't find a pack without a U-zipper? There are many out there... Why not the Atmos I tested? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews i like to have the pack close to me since i do some scrambling and via ferratas as well during my treks, hence i avoid the AG system
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews no never heard of them. anyway its too late. just ordered the kestrel 58. For 130EU you can't really go wrong. I use a pack liner anyway so if the u zip fails my kit will not fly away!! i wish osprey can make a smaller version of the Aether pro. that would be the perfect pack for me. thanks for your feedback.
Hi S rose, No it does not come with a bladder. I use a 2 liter filled to 1.5 liter from Osprey moist of the times but a 3 liter works too. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
On the shoulderstrap like I did with the Gorilla? I would not advise it, I think it is to much weight. On the side or back is fine. Does this answer your question? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay safe! Gijs
I’m seriously considering getting one. My only problem is the two straps below, meant I presume to carry a sleeping bag, seem to me very thin. Could you please tell me if a 6.6lbs tent (15” long, 7” wide) fits in the loops? It looks like the loops, even when completely widened, are very narrow. Thanks a lot
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews @@OutdoorguruGearReviews Thanks a lot...still I wish to use it for the tent...would it really be impossible to squeeze a tent in the loops? What do you think?
It is a 2 liters from Osprey with a hard back. I never fill it to more than 1.5 liters just to prevent to take too much weight and pressure on the reservoir. And I mostly bring a second bottle or filter. Hope this helps! Cheers, Gijs.
Hey Sir, I've come to wholly appreciate your articulate presentation style and cinematographic skills, plus I've just noticed you do E-Bike stuff as well, so Subbed. Just out of interest, are you in Sweden, Norway, or Denmark? I've been assiduously studying up on the Osprey packs - the Atmos, the Kestrel, and the Aether - and as you infer, I am coming to the view that as with the latter two, any disruption to the integrity of the principal construction fabric (i.e. with a J or U zip) will introduce a potential structural weak point which could perhaps be put under strain - or even perhaps potentially burst - if one were to engage in over zealous 'stuffing' and compaction of the main body. Also, I kind of like the extra pockets afforded by the Atmos, which are indeed only made possible by the very ommission of these main access zips. What would you say to that Sir, in your hands-on and clearly experienced practical opinion? (Nice though those zip functions would clearly be in a less earnestly outdoorsy and more urban hostel skipping context). Kind regards. Edit; I should perhaps qualify this for anyone else who is going through this difficult process of remote pack determination/selection; the pockets I allude to are the top webbed 'quarter' pockets - zipped, left and right - which exist between the rear stretch panel and the main load 'trunk' on the Atmos 65 litre version only. These pockets do not exist on the Atmos 50 litre that this kind gentleman reviews on another of his videos. It may well be that the Atmos 65 is essentially an Atmos 50 'base' structure, but with the addition of these two handy and capacious pockets thus upping the overall payload capacity (I so currently surmise). It is the 65 litre Atmos version that I am currently favouring.
Dear Sebastian, Sorry for my late reply but I am traveling and a lot in places without connection. What pack from Lundhags? I do understand your FJ+ ;-))) Enjoy the Outdoors! Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews just security when I'm back packing. Makes bag a little vulnerable but at same time a very convenient feature. I've gone ahead and ordered the bag anyhow. I've had older version of kestrel and it was great.
Dear Paul, Sorry for my late reply but I am traveling and a lot in places without connection. The shorts are from and they are my trusty companions every where I go. Hi DE, That is a positive way to look at the matter. Buy a 30 liter next time 🙃😄😇 Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviewsThanks mate but a 30 litre will just about fit my sleeping bag😂😂😁👍
Great review really! This helped me. I think this backpack would do the job for me. :)
Hi Atlas, Thank you for your comment! Cheer, Gijs

Dear Max, Sorry for my late reply but I am traveling and a lot in places without connection. Thank you for the comment and being a likewise spirit on rigid backpack. Enjoy the Outdoors! Gijs
Thank you for a review where you actually used it. Out of box reviews are useless.
Hi Kungfu, I always use stuff before reviewing. I don't get the point of unboxings.... Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Excellent review
Thanks Jim!
How would you choose between this and the Atmos Gijs?
Love the thorough videos and fun to see you in Sweden!
Hi Jens, Atmos.... Main reason is that is does not have a large U-zipp. Both are pretty bullet proof and still going strong in my life after so many years by now. Thanks for the nice comment! Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews many thanks! This and your backpack fitting video should make a great hike next 👌🏻 greetings from Sweden.
What about the size of raincover? Is it big enough to cover backpack with tent and sleeping mat?
Just ordered one
Hi BJ, Sweet 😁.
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews Thank you very much for your answer ! i will try the both ! Thanks and stay safe too !
Gijs
Hello, Thanks for sharing!
I just bought this bag, I wanted to know if I need an Osprey brand camelback? Or can other brands do the trick?
Thank's !
Hi Vincent, Any brand that fits will do the trick. And now... hit that subscribe button 😉👍. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
Wow, great review! Thank you very much, very informative!
May I know if your hydration reservoir is a tight fit in its storage or there's a room to spare for bigger reservoir? If there is more space, by how many cm/in? Thank you!
I just tried a 2.5 liter and that go's in easy, more is possible but I doubt if the comfort will not be compromised. I hope this helps. Cheers, Gijs
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews definitely, helpful! I appreciate your answering my question.
Sir give this bag ❤️ ,
What sleeping bag would you suggest for the kestrel? I can’t find a bag that fits inside of the compartment.
Manual measurement says M/l ?!?!? . )
@@fontamax73 Trust your measurement ;-)
Thanks for your suggestion! I looking for Deuter Aircontact Pro 60+15l.
Good job! Greetings from Poland

Great!!! Model 2019 has visible difference?
Hi Jacek, In want way? Other colors? Might be but I am not sure. Enjoy the outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
So... Kestrel or Atmos?
Seems like the main differences are the suspension and suitcase opening.
Which do you like better?
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews I would be interested in your thoughts on the Aether after trying it. Especially how it differs from the Atmos.
That makes sense. You know Bach packs? They do some very simple straight forward rugged packs...

Hi there does it come with hyderation bladder , how many litter bladder it takes
Hi S rose, No it does not come with a bladder. I use a 2 liter filled to 1.5 liter from Osprey moist of the times but a 3 liter works too. Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay Safe! Cheers, Gijs
This one or the Osprey Aether 65? What is best for mostly camping and some backpacking?
The Kestrel is lighter and has more volume... The Aether is maybe a bit tuffer and has more gadgets.
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews Thank you sir. I went for the Osprey Atmos 65. Better for my lower back pain.

may i carry my tripod which weight almost 800g on strap like you did?
On the shoulderstrap like I did with the Gorilla? I would not advise it, I think it is to much weight. On the side or back is fine. Does this answer your question? Enjoy the Outdoors and Stay safe! Gijs
I’m seriously considering getting one. My only problem is the two straps below, meant I presume to carry a sleeping bag, seem to me very thin. Could you please tell me if a 6.6lbs tent (15” long, 7” wide) fits in the loops? It looks like the loops, even when completely widened, are very narrow.
Thanks a lot
The lower compartment is for the sleeping bag, the loops are for a foam mattress....Cheers, Gijs ;-)
@@OutdoorguruGearReviews @@OutdoorguruGearReviews Thanks a lot...still I wish to use it for the tent...would it really be impossible to squeeze a tent in the loops? What do you think?

What size water reservoir do you use in it?
