Good stuff, and fun video! (2017 190 FSH) here... with still less than 25 hours on it, LOL! Also, edited to add, Scarab dealers are few and far between in Gulf Shores AL. When I called to enquire about their boats, No Scarab dealer even called me back... easy decision there.
Very in-depth review. Thumbs up.
Great job as usual buddy amazing video and because of the videos that you guys put out consumers have a easier time making a decision on which brand etc. that they would like to purchase. It’s because of videos like these that I believe that one of the reasons that the boat markets are thriving. Thank you very kindly
We enjoyed making it. We tried to be as impartial as we could. Thanks for the kind words.
Damn ! That is the best comparison of anything I have yet seen !
One critique tho. Show each of the boats from a few angles at the beginning.
Great job !!
Great comparison. As usual, great video Will. I would love to see the same comparison between Yamaha 252S and Scarab similar layout boat.
If we could get our hands on a Scarab 255 ID we'd be glad to do one.
Great comparison Will. As a "Rotax guy", and boater with over 50 years experience, I don't think I could argue with a single thing you said. Both are great boats, with some very real pros and cons, you have to decide what's most important for you. What I'd love to see now is an identical comparison between these, and a similar-sized center-console that's outboard powered, with a lot of emphasis on the differences due to the powerplants. How does the performance compare, space, efficiency, etc. Anyway, great job!
Thanks Micah! Come see the boat sometime this week or next.
I agree good stuff … looking to buy this year great video you help me a lot today thanks
Excellent thanks for the feedback
I appreciate every video you make.
Great video! Thank you. Very informative! And very well done
Thank you!
That's about a fair test and comparison I've seen. Well done, congrats.
Thank you!
Great review Will!
Thank you. We missed a few points but hit all the points that we felt were most important. I wish I had remembered the fresh water in the BRP engines, but in my opinion this is not really an advantage due to the fact that the exhaust must still be flushed and engines really never seem to fail due to salt water corrosion. Also I did not mention the sleeve over the impeller shift, but once again I don't see it as a value so I did not include it.
This was outstanding. Thank you!
You're welcome
Great video. I was kind of hoping for a mini series like roots or winds of war. But u were able to thoroughly do the comparison in an hour. Thanks guy 👍
I wish I had more time to plan production value into our videos. For now it's all I can do to get the footage in the can. Maybe one day we'll move towards a more cinematic/documentary style video product.
@@JetBoatPilot ur a good sport. I wish u the best of success sir
@@chevy4x466 Thank you!
I'm actually mainly interested in the yamaha 210 since ill be using it on lake chains and rivers but had to watch this video of the flagship. I can't find another video with such great detail. Awesome work.
I have a 2021 FSH 210 Sport and it is great in the ICWW around St. Augustine, FL. Wish we used it more but with kids sports and work, we don't and may sell it if you know of anyone interested.
Great review. Well done. One thing you forgot to comment on for fishability, is the yamaha is also Outrigger compatible as a standard feature on the T top. Also, Attwood makes a T-top storage box that fits right in that space.
Such a great video!! Especialy for someone new!
Thank you! Glad it helped.
Great video and I'm happy with my decision that I put a deposit on the yamaha 255fsh sport e back in August hope to see it in the spring. Strange tho that the scarab dealer near me has about 8 boats in stock vs my yamaha dealer has none to show.
The Yamaha brand has had over 20 years in the jet space. The Scarab brand only about 7 years. I believe Yamaha is the better of the two boats in many ways but the Scarab does bring some new design concepts to the market which pushes Yamaha to improve and to up the bar every year. Its good to have the two of them competing in this space.
Excellent video. Do either have trim tabs to help in a chop? If not I think that might be the next new jet boat pilot design project. Also power pole mounts for all the Yamahas not just the fsh.
Neither come with tabs but can be added. We actually have a set in house that we were given as a sample but never installed. Maybe that can be done on the FSH.
Great video and comparison, very helpful and informative as always!!! Although when talking center console boats…… I think I’ll go with the Yellowfin!!😜
That's a beast of a center console for sure!
@@JetBoatPilot I do love my 252 on the lake though!!
I appreciate you guys doing such a thorough and objective review!
I think you cheated the Yamaha a bit on maneuverability. The ability to independently use each engine in different directions gives the Yamaha a huge advantage in that slow speed maneuverability category over the single throttle of the Scarab.
That's fair. I should have mentioned that. Good point.
Agreed, seems to me he’s missing a lot of variables in this comparison. Having dual engines in tight spaces or around a dock is huge advantage for either boat, but not properly using the Yamaha jets independently, which you can’t do on Scarab, is big too. The performance testing portion with two short drag races was very disappointing too. Why not run em both out and show the top end on both?
Super, great, thanks a lot.
Awesome comparison! I'd love to upgrade to a larger FSH like the 255 someday, but we've been super happy and impressed with our 195 FSH Sport so far. I think Yamaha does a great job a putting out a well packaged boat without nickel and diming the consumer for every single little thing like many other manufacturers do. This was one of the deciding factors for us.
True, the total package concept makes it easier on the dealers too.
@@JetBoatPilotJust a heads up, the Scarab anchor locker is designed to use the anchor upside down. (Those 2 brackets above the locker hold the outside pivot rod of the anchor while the line/chain loop points down). Have the same type of storage on the Yellowfin 39. Keeps the anchor from damaging the locker.
@jgodshall80 true, unfortunately the space is too small to hold the Fortress FX7 which is our go to anchor for a boat this size.
Awesome as usual Will!! Couple of questions.. What about trolling motor options.. battery storage and mounting? What type of Radio packages and is there room for an extra house battery for running the stereo all day?
On the Yamaha we see ample room in the changing room to add batteries for the trolling motor. Probably 3 will fit under that shelf. I did not see as much room for the extra batteries on the Scarab. Both come with dual battery setups from the factory so your stereo is probably good. I know of guys that are running dual power poles with the Scarab and have had success with that but not sure of their electrical setup.
So glad I found and watched this video. Oustanding job. There was only a couple of things left to my decision that wasn't covered; quality of components and fit and finish. Things like quality of materials used in the structure and assembly. The other thing I am wondering about is the fuel consumption and range. I can probably find that somewhere, but it one another question I have about the two. Great, great comparison though. Thanks ever so much for putting in all the time and effort producing this.
You're very welcome!
The most interesting video I watched recently
Good comparison.
If you want a fishing machine with comfort, the Yamaha is for you. The Simrad has depth and fish finder.
The Yamaha created a better casting platform for fishing all over the boat
So far only through half of the video. So, sorry if I am jumping the gun on my comments.
Also, on the captain’s bolster you normally will be leaning on the leaning post and not sitting when going offshore.
Some also use the center consul changing area to also use a porta-let if needed.
While not really feasible for a short video on new boats, a potential purchaser should also consider overall quality and durability. The Yamaha would win there hands down. The peace of mind of Yamaha durability and the fact that all of the major components are engineered and manufactured by the same company and can all be serviced at a Yamaha service center is huge. You also could have done a fuel capacity/range comparison and perhaps a sound test at speed. Otherwise, great video and comparison.
Thank you
Great thorough video! You showed performance from a drag race / high-speed perspective on smooth water, but how do either of these perform in rougher, choppy water, or offshore in 3-5’ seas? On a lake this may not be an issue, but for a saltwater CC boat, they need to be able to handle the weather, winds, & waves changing quickly...
That said, I am currently in the market for a 25’ CC boat and have been leaning towards the Yamaha due to the “fishability”. I also think it’s really the “SUV” of boats - good shallow water capabilities, “fishability”, along with a lot of “family friendly” features.
We've had both boats in the chop and they both felt great. But its hard to communicate that through video camera. The camera just cant' pick up the subtilty of the motion and impact of the waves.
The 255 Scarab 255 did well offshore. I really enjoyed it. Too many motor, and radio issues. Never will own a Scarab with Rotax motors again.
How about noise comparison?
Great video! Thanks
We sold both of those boats a while back. Both were pretty comparable in terms of noise at speed.
which one is readily available to purchase? that be my choice for a winner. unless they're both waiting list.
Excellent video! couple of questions , looking at the FSH models should I be be worried about the SVHO reliability vs the NA models? also as far as tow sports water skiing would the NA say the 252 FSH would it handle that?
Both will be very reliable. I've seen no data that tells me that the supercharged version has a shorter lifespan. As for tow sports, both will do very well. I like the supercharged version for surfing because you can stack alot more ballast on the boat for a larger surf wave.
At the repair shop i worked at, there were never any issues on supercharged yamaha engines. However I do remember the rotax had numerous issues especially the higher HP versions..
The Yamaha comes complete with the Scarab everything is an option and those add up to a lot more money! We will be buying the Yamaha..
We have the 210 and love it. Would love to upgrade to the 255 but just can't give up being able to run in less than a foot of water.
The draft on the 25 is not really much more than the 21 and while on plane it's probably very similar.... with that said of you're operating in shallow water like that you're going to run the risk of sucking sand into your cooling system and over time this can clog the cooling system and ruin the engine.
Well done Will! But when I was shopping (for several years 2018-2020) at numerous boat shows here in Florida, I found the Scarabs fit and finish in those hidden areas was much lower quality than Yamaha. However, Yamaha has issues as well, but overall I agree Yamaha is a better product.
I agree, the fit and finish does appear to be a bit better on the Yamaha, despite the recent issues with quality.
This is the kind of info on the boats I am wanting to know about these two boats. Thanks for comment.
Why didnt you cover the Yamaha with twin controls for maneuverability? Should be a huge advantage. All in all great job on the video!
I wish I had now but did not want to get too much into the advantages of the Yamaha over the Scarab because most people think I'm in the tank for Yamaha and don't give other brands a fair shake. I could have included the twin throttle piece into the comparison and likely still been fair and balanced in the presentation. Good point brining it up. I love my dual throttles.
Great comparison. If I was in the market for a center console, I think I'd go Yamaha.
Definitely does both family and boating well!
Hey, you’ve mentioned surfing behind the Yamaha a couple times. Do you wake surf this boat? What do you use as the tow point? Does it have any sort of low speed cruise control?
We used the rocket launcher bar. Also manually dialed in 11 mph on the speed control.
Living in Florida, I think I would prefer the tail gate of the scarab. You never know about the next wave.
Didn’t mention docking mode for the Scarab. It’s a huge help for my 195 open!
I should have mentioned it, but to be honest I felt out of control using it. With one engine off I felt much more confident.
I think there is much more helm control at low speed with the Yamaha due to having independent throttle controls. On my 275 there are many times approaching and leaving the dock I don’t even use the steering wheel. It also helps to control approach speed as one can be in forward and the other neutral.
probably the best comparison and walkthrough Ive seen so far. Only downside is its 2023! Im looking at purchasing a yamaha 252 or 255 sport and would love to see you do this again on the 2023. Also would be awesome to see how it handles is big water. You should add some big water with some good chop so we can get a solid perspective on how it would handle. Also would like to see the comparison on fuel economy of these boats to understand what to expect. I fish in louisiana and would take it out 20 or so miles offshore to some blue water and that would be great to see. Otherwise very well done and appreciated.
Not much has changed since then. Both boats are still the same hull.
@@JetBoatPilot gotcha. I just haven’t seen how it performs in rough conditions. Can’t seem to find anything on that.
@@jamesalbi9388 I can tell you it rides well. We loved ours.
like both but a few things are options but yes not standard. Like the Livewell/ fishing packages.Keep up the work.
Thank you!
That ladder on the scarab is useless cause it’s buried under the “tailgate” swim platform. The should hav put it into the tailgate
They have an optional ladder that you can add to the tailgate, but it does seem like an afterthought.
No live well in the Scarab is a HUGE deal for someone looking for a fishing center console. The Yamaha is incredibly enticing
Yeah I thought that was odd, not having a live well on a cc
THIS WAS AN AMAZING VIDEO. CONSIDERING UPGRADE TO NEW 26 FT CENTER AND BOTH CHECK ALOT OF BOXES. I AM MORE FISH AND PRACTICAL OVER SPEED SO YAMAHA HAS EDGE FOR ME. WISH YOU COULD HAVE INCLUDED AN OFFSHORE WATER TEST IN MODERATE CHOP AND SMALL TO MEDIUM SWELL. WOULD BE NICE TO KNOW HOW THEY EACH HANDLE IN NORMAL OFFSHORE CONDITIONS WITH SOME 2 TO 3 FT WIND CHOP, ETC. ANY INFO ON THIS?
They both handle about the same. Maybe slight edge to the Scarab in the rough but only moderately better.
GREAT comparison and review! Could you do the 255 ID against the Yamaha 25? :)
We don't have access to the 255 ID. If we did we could do one.
@@JetBoatPilot We have one being built but gosh knows when it will be done.
@@FamilyFunIRL I know right! Tough market right now!
Was the Scarab out of the three hour break in period when the computer limits the rpms?
@@FamilyFunIRL yes, both were around 10 hours if memory serves me well.
can you control the buckets independently of the throttles? for maneuvering?
On the Yamaha, yes. No on the Scarab.
Off shore range? I know mpg is indicative of driving style but wondering if theirs any particular one you'd feel comfortable going out farther?
Definitely the Yamaha. It has a 115 gallon tank. The Scarab is about 50 I think.
Yamaha has this one. Hands down!!!
Thanks for getting into price..so many reviews skip price
You're welcome, we aim for detail
"Comes with a compass right there..."(Proceeds to cover it with the phone, lol)
Hey Will, have a more technical question for you. Seen as Yamaha does not provide a NMEA 2000 capable jet boat option, can JBP come up with a way to connect out chart plotters to the engine and other interfaces? I cant even obtain a damn engine temp gage through Yamaha let alone other engine data through a NMEA 2000 interface? Yamaha has this option for their outboards why not the jet boats? Thanks!
Best intel I have is that the Yamaha software is very restrictive as to what can be connected and made useful. Word is you really can't do much even if you connect to their system due to the restrictions in place.
@@JetBoatPilot So that's what I learned as well. However, I was hoping someone e.g. Garmin, Simrad, or JBP (lol), would come up with a hack? Maybe if Yamaha jetboaters beat on their door long enough they will come up with a solution?
@@dcc2444 way above our paygrade. Wish we could help more but not going to be able to on this one. Sorry bout that.
@@JetBoatPilot No worries, JBP is awesome, love your products!! Thanks...
what I want to know is, If I take either one of these boats off the coast of north carolina for a day of fishing, and the weather turns and all of a sudden im in 3-5 foot seas, which one gets my family back to shore safe and sound with the least amount of worry along the way. I know a 25 foot stern drive or outboard will do it, but will a jet boat.
The Yamaha feels solid to me, and so does the Scarab. I am not sure how to compare it to other boats but I would say that it will get you home safe though it might be a bumpy ride
Would you recommend any one of these for deep sea
Not really a great deep sea option. These boats are lightweight and more suitable for near shore fishing. Some will fish them in deeper waters and they'll do fine, but the ride can get rough when you're 60 miles from shore and weather rolls through. I may try to get a buddy of mine to go with me on our next 255 FSH to deep water and document the whole thing.
I want a 225 fish sooo bad😢
Can you tell me what the trailer height is with the center console folded down on the yamaha 255 is trying to fit this into a garage ha..?
There's no real practical way to fold the tower down on either of these boats. You're going to need a 11 orn12 foot opening to get under cover.
@@JetBoatPilot what about when you open the center console to get into the bathroom area? Does that not lower the height?
@@49306Q no, actually on Bimini top versions it increases the height when you open the changing room hatch it gets taller.
@@JetBoatPilot invaluable information However not exactly what I wanted to hear lol just pulled the trigger on a 255 hoping to have it before July have to store it some where else.
What's an average yearly maintenance cost on the 255?
i wonder if Yamaha just added a tailgate to the back of their boat, would those two seats on the swim platform be legal while in motion...
Yes likely, there basically has to be a rail separating the passengers from the water to be legal.
@@JetBoatPilot Hey Will... Do you think Yamaha will ever make a FSH 275 model?
@@jeffq7396 It is logical that they would but don't expect it for several years
We need a trolling motor install
You never said anything about the single throttle lever versus the dual throttle ever. And I really can't believe that someone didn't have an accident backing up the scarab.
let me know when I can come surf them
Much much more functional and comfortable seat on reare of Scarab. Scarab has a impeller shaft sleeve that Minimize chance of rope or debris wrapping the shaft and causing faiure.
The sleeve around the shaft does not prevent ropes from getting into the impeller. Last year we had to take the grate off to remove a rope we ingested.
Which has the better stereo ?
The Scarab is better, but we opted for the upgraded stereo. The Yamaha is good too but definitely like the sound better on the Scarab.
what about the dual throttle controls on the yamaha
Definitely a benefit for me, in favor of the Yamaha for sure!
Still not sure why scarab still haven’t added a bigger fuel tank with twin 300s. I’ll take Yamaha all day for that.
I wish I had mentioned that in the engine segment! That 110 gallon Yamaha fuel tank is massive!
Yamaha boat will last way longer than the scarab, I am on my 3rd yamaha engine and I have never ever been left stranded or had any issues. I run my boats hard. Put lots of hours on my engines.
I was shopping for a 19' center console. First boat, so i wanted a small one to learn how to operate it before i buy a big one. I liked the scarab 195 open and the yamaha fsh 190/195. I ended up picking the yamaha fsh 190. The simplicity of the naturally aspirated 1.8L 4 cyl sold me. The engine in the scarab seemed like it's weak point. 250 hp in a 3 cyl engine miggt sound sexier than 180 hp from a 4 cyl, but i know that hp on the scarab is tweaked and tuned beyond the limits of a long-life engine. I just heard too much scuttle-butt about the scarab/rotax reliability.
Someone needs to start making a tilt and telescoping wheel on a center console boat. Nothing worse than when you sit down and can barely reach the wheel. That's the one thing I hate about center console boats.
I need a boat!!!!! All I can afford is an inflatable
Check out the sea doo switch, boat finance is different than car or house. You can do it I know it. I believe in you!!! Live your dreams!!!
for me Yamaha is the best
Been in the Coast Guard for 20 years doing search and rescue and marine law enforcement, never once have I issued a citation for anyone riding on the stern of a boat.
We have always been told that if you don't have a railing or other enclosure it is illegal to sit back there when underway. Also there are some dangers with carbon monoxide inhalation as well
Wow the Yamaha boat is amazing for a small fishing boat well I mean not small I guess but it’s at the smallest size id want to be offshore hahaha
Yes, I think they hit it out of the park with the 255 FSH
Too bad none of them are available in California
Yep, you need to move to Florida! Lol
Just leave that ridiculous state.
Aidsafornia
I'm going to retire in 12yrs in carribian I'm doing my homework now on boats
These are both great shallow water boats.
Still trying to figure out how a liftgate mitigates carbon monoxide....
I also don't think that's the purpose. I see it being more of a "keeping passengers onboard" thing.
That door on the Scarab hardtop is upside down! Also I’m not sure how that tailgate protects you from emissions. Falling off yes, but not emissions.
My assumption is air flow from Above the bow is able to dilute the exhaust gases enough to make it safe. If the area were open without the tailgate it may create a Vortex? These are only assumptions but I presume this is something that was considered in the construction of the tailgate
Bathroom?
Yamaha seems todo the “little things” way better.
Great video, but I’m still shaking my head that neither boat has a dedicated toilet. Both are awesome boats but if I’m 10-20 miles off shore with family and friends and people need to take a dump! Oh, just jump into the ocean naked and do your business 😮😅
I wouldn't touch either. I would never buy
And inboard motor again .outboard is the way to go
I'll say really like scarab helm alot better not enough to change my mind and buy over Yamaha I like the name Yamaha that is really what seals the deal for me little shit dose matter the fact the helm of Yamaha has no cup holders is horable you'll notice that every time om the boat .
Well my opinion only 102,000 dollars compared to 83,000 no comparison. Sad that 600hp only gets you a couple more mile an hour. I didn’t agree with the two thumbs up for the helm review. The two helms was night and day only thing good on the scarab was the seat that’s it the rest was trash. The twin screen on the Yamaha was way better the nab screen was excellent the scarab was trash to small hard to see. Far as around the dock maneuvering twin throttle is was better hands down then single lever. For me it’s Yamaha for the overall win
Hard agree about the price point. Scarab costs way more with way less, and once you add the options to match what the Yamaha has, you're much closer to $110k. On to the point about the helm; once again, hard agree. Having the ability to have a map that size at a glance with both live view and depth finder is invaluable. I know it'll drive the price up by $5k but if Yamaha adds the "Drive" system to the 255, it takes all the marbles for slow speed usability. Only thing I see that the Scarab wins at is max H.P. but since it's Rotax, it'll break down every 5 hours.
Wow, those boats cost as much as my house.
Boat's have gone crazy over the last decade or so!
Those seem to have less room inside than an 18ft cc
The scarab boats are built very cheap and without common sense. From the buttons on the helm that looks like they got it from a hardware store, the cheap cushions with all the snaps which would get rusty instead of the cushions being part of the actual panels. The speakers on the helm facing sideway instead of backwards, the cup holders metal ring look cheap. The single screen with a small GPS, having to remove back rests cushions in order to change configuration which it is a pain in da a. The rear ladder that can only be used if the platform is in locked position. The roof seems smaller on the scarab. I can go on and on.. and all Scarabs designers should simply get fired.
Is like comparing a Corolla with a Mercedes Benz, but in this case both boats and all scarabs are pretty much price as the Yamaha.
Scarab lost me with seadoo motors.
SO this guy who sells Yamaha parts is non biased in his comparison ??? I DONT THINK SO !!!!!
We sell parts for both brands.
Yamaha is the better boat here. Completely and fairly compared. I didn't hear any bias during the verdicts. Scarab made a fishing boat without livewells or coolers built in as standard equipment and are charging $20k more for lower build quality and Rotax engines that make 50 hp more each but are significantly less reliable.
@@Kenneth_RogersAnd a 50 gallon fuel tank on the Scarab!!! Yamaha has a 111 gallon fuel tank.
My spouse didn’t want an aquarium in the house, so I paid 100k for the Yamaha for the aerated live well. It runs 24/7 in my garage as an expensive aquarium.
I think I like Yamaha more scarab is really nice for me it take Yamaha I don't like that ass fialate seat if I save few grand I'd go whith scarab
You can't be serious. Jet boats have notoriously short life spans and are uber expensive to repower.
Seating for two and a half kids😂😂😂😂.
Grady White, all day long....
I own a scarab 215 HOI- I guarantee this boat will outperform a Yamaha every day, all day!!
From a performance perspective I think we gave the edge to Scarab. We agree.
@@JetBoatPilot your video is good…. Out of the Gate you can tell your biased, but i respect the props you gave to scarab.
No brand is perfect I agree but…. Scarab has been a major disrupter to the jet boat market
@@luanders I tried my best to be objective, but you're right. I have owned many Yamaha boats and they've served me well.

Very cool video! The Very big negative with jet boats is you are pushing water unlike a outboard engine you are turning Water with a lot more torque! And the engine noise is unbearable on the jet boats..those boats may run 50 mph with on person..but put 5 adults plus coolers and fishing gear?? It's a fat slow pig..I'll keep my Contender!!!.put it up against and jet boat with 5ft seas !! Guarantee you will be calling sea tow !! Lol 😆 🤣 😂
I am sure the contender is a solid boat. Most jet Boaters are buying them for many reasons. They do alot of things really well and are truly a Swiss army knife of a boat, especially the Yamaha.
@@JetBoatPilot absolutely agree 👍
Say you hate jet boats without saying you hate jet boats.....
That scarab is one ugly boat
Both are awesome.. but depending on what you want out of your boat would depend on which one I want.. if just out for sport and speed it would be scarab.. but if your gonna fish at all from it then yamaha all the way
Do jet boats still suck gas like there's no tomorrow?
Supercharged do, naturally aspirated is about like an IO
Estimate the price ? $150k?
The Yamaha comes in just under $100K. The Scarab at that time came in just a bit over $100K. Today maybe $110K. No where close to 150K for sure!
