"I was simply blown away when I found that Kurt Cobain liked my work, and have always wanted to talk to him about his reasons for covering ‘The Man Who Sold the World'. It was a good straight forward rendition and sounded somehow very honest. It would have been nice to have worked with him, but just talking with him would have been real cool.”

Kurt cobain's cover of man who sold the world was good. The only thing they ever produced that sounded like music and not some schizo scratching plates

No worries about the pronounciation. I love newer fans learning about Nirvana. There's no sense splitting hairs over this point. Thanks for making the video!
Thanks for watching!
I still enjoyed the video.
But honestly it was nails on a chalkboard for me everytime it hit my ears.
Though I still applaud/support his effort. I totally support a Nirvana Iceberg pt2 addressing that and some other tidbits!
Nothing tops the In Bloom music video...Nerve Anna!
I felt the same way until I heard dude say "huge angle-like women" 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Yes worries about the pronunciation
I grew up in a very homophobic family yet my father still put Nirvana on not knowing about this, as a young child who was closeted, I used to research this and found that out. It was comforting to hear that.
just like in bloom
you got raised well then lol jk
They were not a gay band , but stood for all human rights.
@@nevermind19700 yeah, I know that, it’s just a matter of feeling supported
i was just thinking about all the people who hate gay, trans, black, basically any minority and listen to nirvana. i knew a few people who would spew hate speech n had nirvana quotes in their instagram bios. i remember telling one of them that kurt literally hung out with gay/trans people and they’d just deny it. it’s so funny to me
Just to make a correction, Kurt was not a born again Christian but rather took a lot of inspiration from the religion itself. As far as we know he was non religious just a dude who liked to explore and experiment with religious tones in his music and art.
I think that came from when he stayed for a while at Jesse Reed's family, a friend from school, who were devoted Christians, he was 17 yo or something at the time. I believe some of that experience ended up in the lyrics of "Lithium". He went along with them to church, but really was looking for an identity. After that I don't think he considered himself religious, but was simply interested in it
@@raymondhartmeijer9300 Yeah I'm pretty sure that's the story too. I watched a whole documentary about Kurt on UA-cam I just don't remember it's name but I'm pretty sure that's the same story talked about here.

Kathleen Hanna from Bikini Kill wrote "Kurt smells like teen spirit" on his wall.
The reference was to the fact Kurt was dating Toby Vail (Bikini Kill drummer) at the time and that was a deodorant she used.
Kurt thought it was some phrophetic play on words when in fact Kathleen was poking fun at the fact that he smelt like her bandmate.
He wasn't directly inspired by the deodorant brand.
Ok thanks for the info
@@Snook_YT all good, I enjoyed the video and I'm just glad there's still interest in such a great band.
Kurt was madly in love with Tobi and said 9 songs off Nevermind are about his unrequited love of her. True fans will know this.
@@briankennedy1192 I would dispute 9 were.
I already explained what teen spirit was, an indirect reference to tobi.
In bloom, is about the people he hated (jocks/rednecks) singing their songs and how stupid they were to not realise he was mocking them.
Polly is about a case he read about a guy that abucted and tortured young girls.
Stay away was originally titled Pay to play and seems more of state of address of the music scene.
I don't see it in Territorial pissings, On a plain or Something in the way.
There's a few I could see an almost direct reference to her but to suggest nearly the whole album is about her is silly.
He was also well known for just adding bits and pieces from poetry or stories he wrote to fill out lyrics.
YES thank you ❤ I love that anecdote
I wish Kurt Cobain was here now. I miss him. I like him. He's raw, real, rare, He was more than Nirvana's frontman. He was a down to earth human being. RIP - KDC

I was 17 when Kurt took his own life. I wasn't a fan of the music. I actually dismissed him altogether. However, during the most difficult part of my life at year ago (45), I discovered Nirvana and now have so much respect for his music--I think his lyrics are brilliant. The way he plays with words--brilliant. I am excited to read his published journals. I knew he had constant stomach pain from his back--I also experienced serious GI issues. Yeah, I would have taken anything to make the pain stop. Bi-polar. So many brilliant people, famous and not famous, struggle with this disorder. I am usually a better writer than this, but I, too, have mental health issues that affect me daily. Kurt has helped me through a very personal, indescribable hell. Lithium is my favorite song. Cobain was a genius and a voice of our generation.
lithium is also my favourite song :]

There's something about Nirvana and other Grunge/Punk groups around the time thats just so infectious. You don't even have to listen to a lot of their work, hell you could even just start with one of their boxsets of rarities and cut demos and immediately the music and the band just engulfs you into it.
I've been waiting for nirvana iceberg for a long time, thankyou for finnaly making one. While the band career was pretty short, they actually have some really interesting lore and things to explore
Truth.
I'm fortunate enough to have been a tweenager at the height of their initial popularity in real time.
Wish I moved to the Seattle area prior to the couple months after Kurt's passing however. I'm still here, moved here summer 1994.
@ChitmanDanisnotafan technically I live in Everett
Another thing is dave grohl sang lead vocals on marigold and i think it was the only one he did
Marigold is a Grohl song. I think he was on guitar and possibly drums as well. It's a Foo's track basically. It was spread around as a Nirvana track in the 90's and 2000's because Dave Demoed it when he was in the band. You can hear Kurts influence on that track.
@Polyfusia yeah and its funny cause thats the only good song he's ever put out in my opinion lol
How can this have no mention at all of Pat Smear?
In the rehearsals for the MTV Kurt introduces him as the newest member of Nirvana and he was with the bank for the last 6 months before Kurt's demise. He wasn't a big part, but he deserves a mention. He also joined playing guitar when they were inducted into the R&R hall of fame
Maybe he should do a Nirvana Iceberg part 2.
Most with more than a passing interest in the band know Pat well. He was a touring guitarist not a band member. He may have become one with time had they stayed together. I recall Kurt saying he loved looking over and seeing Pat jam out on stage and that it made him happy. Ditto!
@@PolyfusiaHe was also a member of the germs but seen as nirvana fans only seem to kmow or like 1 band then call themselves punks, i wouldnt expect anyone else to know this.
Pat is amazing.

Cool....and?
Still searching the problem
According to Nirvana manager Danny Goldberg in his book, David Geffen was perfectly fine with the way "In Utero" sounded, and at no point the record company hesitated to release it. This rumour was picked up by the media through poor sources around the band, but not from the band or recordlabel itself.
What in fact happened was that Kurt himself was initially unhappy with the way Albini had mixed in his vocals, therefor asked Scott Litt to remix some of the record
i’m pretty sure the ‘chest graffiti’ is referring to the photo shoot where Kurt had ‘riot grrrl’ and Courtney had ‘family values’ written on their stomachs in sharpie (i could be wrong tho idk)
It refers to a copy of bleach Kurt had that he’d graffitied ‘manly chest’ onto Krist’s chest, I just added this because I thought it was cool
i like that you have a hard time reading yet still post videos where you talk. like genuinely, most people would be too scared, your awesome man. i use to be terrified to read in-front of people during high school, because id always mess up. i should have never cared man.
This is a cool iceberg. I’m 46 and I’ve been a Kurt/Nirvana fan since I was 12. I was never a “cool kid”, but I somehow ended up with the Bleach album when it came out. For a while, I didn’t even know that the Teen Spirit band was the same band who released Bleach lol. For me, all of these could’ve all been just one tier, as I’ve been an obsessed fan for so long that I’ve known all the lore from the beginning. Well, almost…the first time I got internet access - in 1995 - I looked up every Nirvana website I could find and printed out literally everything on it, pictures and all.
I also credit Kurt with turning me onto Pixies, my all time fave band. I’ve been fortunate enough to have met them several times and they’re still amazing, despite Kim no longer being in the band.
I live near Kim Deal lol she lives 2 blocks away from me no joke I’ve been to her house for halloween a few times
Kurdt Cobain
I remember watching a nirvana concert here on youtube a while ago and before they played the song 'sliver', they said something along the lines of 'we're gonna play silver or sliver or whatever you want to call it'' because of not many people knowing if it was called sliver or silver. In this video he said silver but it is very common to get it wrong
In fact Kurt named the song Sliver intentionally so that people would get confused with Silver!
Silverchair even messed up putting it in their band name.
sliverchair just doesn't have the same ring...@@Sindollx666x
Hey! About the "Manly chest graffiti"
Kurt had a copy of bleach that he’d graffitied on, there’s a picture of it on the bottom right, it’s probably not that relevant but I think it’s cool
Thanks! Can anybody verify?
If you look at the small picture at the bottom you see an arrow pointing out "manly chest"

The fact that I actually had that deodorant when I was young is funny
The song is called Sliver not Silver
And Kurt didnt even know that teen spirit deodorant existed. His girlfriend wore it leading to one of his female friends who was in a band with Kurts girlfriend wrote "Kurt Smells Like Teen Spirit" on his wall while they were goofing around drunk. The following morning when Kurt woke up he saw it and liked how smells like teen spirit sounded. While drunk they had been talking about teen revolution etc. Kurt thought she meant that he was a person who could inspire pepole. But what she actually menat was that his girlfriend had marked him with her scent.
Love this video and love ur style man. Thank you for making this I hope you have an amazing day
Kurt Cobain was pretty much only a christian when he was a teenager; I believe he went on to denounce the faith in his adult years, although he still kept his fascination with religious imagery. Regardless, great video dude!
funny how it only lasted 27
O my
I'm proud to say I already knew almost everything you said or quite often a different version :)
My man, good content, you gotta do more takes so you’re not constantly stumbling
The teen spirit bit is wrong. Kurt didn't know it was deodorant until after the song was written.
Ok thanks for the info
One of his friends made a remark about his deodorant which he misheard and the infamous song was born
Kathleen Hannah was dating Dave Grohl while living at the Pear St apartment. Kurt was dating Toby at the time, Toby wore teen spirit deodorant. Kathleen spray painted kurt smells like teen spirit on the bedroom wall. Assuming kurt smelled like teen spirit because of Toby. Kurt didn't even know it was a deodorant until after the song was made. He just liked the spray painted message and rolled with it
@@the_other_Sarah he literally mentions that later on in the video! 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Perhaps a Nirvana Iceberg pt2 with corrections, and more information. Perhaps the "Sliver" / "Silver " mistake- and how even though the guys were aware of this frequent mistake probability they still rollled with it.
They were correct & Silverchair even mistakingly called their band by this mistake. (In fact i think Kurt used it as a way to tell who his deepest fans truly were). Technically they should be SLIVERchair.

@@frankie3791 Yes it changed music forever. 1 day it was MJ and Whitney Houston at the top then it was Nirvana and company to change music. We need that again. As a decades long rocker who cut his teeth on Buddy, 50s, 60s, 70s rock the 90s was really insane. Then we got that Limp Bizkit and company that had catchy tunes but wasn't as Idk lasting or whatever. We need this again. We need a wakeup call. We need Nirvana 2023, AIC 2023, SG 2023 to set the coarse. I see and hear alot of teens into rock listening to these bands and falling in love with this music. Like we did back early 90s. I'm happy they have it but wish they had these types of bands and music for themselves. It's sad. Not saying today's music sucks, saying that we have music that rely on views, subs for their worth. They sing through a computer to sound perfect. That's not why we love grunge, it's cause it's not perfect, it's messy, it's feedback, and it's talent. We're in a time where clothes and cars matter again. It dont. What matters is the music, not what u wear or drive.

You missed a bunch of topics in the video. So were they just topics you didn't know anythint about or is there gonna be a part 2?
I know I missed a bunch, they either had little to no information on them, boring or not interesting, or would get me demonetized

Cool 😃
Also the ending I don’t get it either 😂
(After edit: Sorry didn't see your comment note about it initially.)
Can't deal with the "In Utero" pronunciation, (and the common boo-boo of "SLIVER" being called "Silver" but so far other than those little nit picky things I noticed, I'm still enjoying/appreciating the video.
Got some good stuff for younger fans who probably missed most this stuff.
(Though those of us that were young teens in their original heyday in real time, that are also big fans, are familiar with all the info. However it's nice to see younger generations catching on to this info. )
