  • Join us for a virtual garden tour in our Dandenong Ranges Garden in Victoria in southern Australia. This morning was super cold and we checked out how the plants had handled the frost and freezing weather conditions.
    I hope you enjoy our Winter gardening video.

    Sadly since sharing this, we have continued to have some incredibly cold nights below freezing. And quite a few of the plants shared in this video are now really affected.
    If you check out our UA-cam, I recently shared a pic of the bananas. Those 1st ones in the row have browned off badly. But the ones further along under the canopy of the elderflowers aren't so bad.

    It was a nice frosty morning there. We have had some nice frosty mornings here but we usually have a bit more than what we have had so far. It is amazing how some plants get badly damaged by frost yet others don’t get any damage at all and some even need it to flower well in the spring.

      That is so very true. I'm popping up another super short video right now, with an update on further change over this past week with continued nights under freezing. There was a really interesting difference in the bananas and the different spots, exposed to the sky or protected with canopy.

    You can put bubble wrap over the green house plants for a cheap secondary layer of protection. The bigger bubble bubble wrap has better thermal protection than the small bubble

      @@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus Also you could try putting it farthest from the entrance. Could still be an issue when you go to tend to plants in front of it, but could also try raising it a little which will have the added effect of more sun as well as the hotter air. Thanks for the video. Just found your channel and love what you guys have done :)

    Hi. Down here in Tassie where i am, weve had minus 6 ,7 and i think 8 or 9 as well. Our dams were frozen for about 5 days. The ice was about 1 inch thick! Our ground was frozen solid, even the pinebark! Some days the temperature only got to 3 degrees all day!

    Unfortunate news on the losses there. Great to see your pineapple - reall a goal for us here too. Frost has been a trial though and we are lower mid-north SA.

    I just remember that mum always watered the ice off the plant before the sun hit them and they were supposedly not so damaged a lot was the sun burning the plants through the fros

    We're not too far away from you somewhere near the Dandenongs & it's been really interesting. Somehow my newly-germinated caulis survived when I left them out by mistake, but carrots etc have ground to a halt.

      It's always so interesting to hear how others are going locally too. The carrots you would have seen in this video were planted a few months ago and have barely moved in all the time. Hopefully with the days now starting to get longer, both our gardens will start to move a bit. It will be spring seed planting time before we know it 😀

    Gosh, you've definitely had more of a frost than us!
    We can't wait to get our greenhouse up and going! We should be able to keep a lot of our plants over winter. I love the pineapple! It's so cute!
    Is that Lemongrass thriving?

      Wow! I always think of your side getting super cold there too.
      The greenhouse really is a game changer. You guys will love it 😀
      The lemongrass is doing really well. We bring it out in Summer and pop it in the greenhouse in winter. Hubby really needs to split it, as it has fully filled that big pot.

    My celery lasted ok but the potatoes didn’t like the frost at all never had problems with the potatoes before garlic is ok but so slow this year the rainbow chard was fine as were the onions but everything is very slow growing with the cold. We are in cockatoo

      Our garden is now super similar Elizabeth. Like yours the celery perked back up. Which we are greatful for, as it is so handy in Winter stews. But the potatoes have pretty much melted, they are so unhappy.

    G'day again.
    I reckon you are correct about the asparagus getting a rest last season, those crowns will be full of energy this season!
    Your bananas, although smaller were looking better than mine at the time of your filming but they may be worse now. Your dragonfruit variety may be a sensitive variety. I found that I got rot on the standard red and the spiky yellow and I replaced those varieties and I'm sure you could grow dragonfruit up there no worries if you grew "lemonade" "tricia" "aussie gold" and the standard "Vietnamese white" as I have also had lots of temps below zero already. You will just need to select the right microclimates around your property and put them in a raised bed.
    Thanks for getting up early in the freeze to make your video mate 😀

    • @Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus
      @Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus  2 місяці тому +1

      Thank you so much for sharing your super valuable advice. I will keep a look out for those specific dragonfruit varieties in the future and give it one more go.
      Sadly the bananas have got pretty bad now where there were ones exposed to the sky. The leaves are blackened. But there is still some green, so I'm hoping they will come back. All the ones under the elderflower are doing much better and the ones in the pot on our north wall (ones we have had about a decade) are doing well too. As you say, picking microclimate is so important. The North wall spot and the greenhouse are definitely the best ones.

      @@Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus in the growing season I have pleny of dragonfruit cuttings that you can have to put in a pot or I can pot them up here and you can have them once they have grown roots

    Do you hard freeze often? I am in Southern Highlands, NSW. So far, I’ve only had soft frosts, and not much this year.
    Also, my dahlias were incredibly long-lived this year, too. I was finally able to cut them back and move the ones that jumped into places I don’t want them a month ago.

    • @Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus
      @Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus  2 місяці тому

      Normally maybe one or 2 a year and it is a novelty and doesn't really affect the plants. This year though has been super cold and we had a lot more night where it fully froze.

      Great question! And I should have shown it!
      That pod cover is gold. There are some really small corriander that had recently popped up and they survived fine. The bok choy, rocket and bigger corriander in there, all have done fine too.

      @Bush_Edge_Homesteading_Aus that is great to know! I've just moved to a colder climate that sometimes gets frost. I'm hoping the temp setup i've made reduces its impact as i don't yet know when to expect it and which things to protect and which will survive 😂😂😂 just live and learn.
