Looks like you get good recovery . We ran an eight inch edger with .090 plate and .125 kerf . Cut with in .001 of an inch . Would those blades work with this mill ? Love the speed . Do a test with two logs the same size , measure speed against a band saw to make finished product ( band saw is not finished untill the slabs are edged ) I'll put my money on your swing saw system
That's awesome. How do you plane it, mill it and kiln dry it? Great for rough cut timber but rough cut timber has a high moisture content and will warp like hell if it lays out and drys.
I was a huge fan of the Lucas mill but, this has Lucas beat. This is what I'll have later on, Lord willing. I found an old lucas, locally. To get me started. But I'm really impressed with the simplicity of this machine.
How many boards do you need to cut before you recoup the investment costs, including cost of logs, operator labor, insurance, energy, transportation, etc? Thanks
It all depends on your circumstance. If you have quality trees available for milling into furniture grade timber it wouldn't take long. We milled here in NZ for the first few years before we actually sold these machines, production milling pine. Market in NZ is too costly to buy the logs. Now perhaps if we focused on more niche products like specialty large beams we may have done better. Australia seems to have an abundance of high quality timber that doesn't need treating. Same goes for a lot of countries out there!
how large a stick can you handle,,,,,i have an oak 27" at the small end and 54" at the big end 27' away...i want to cut some large table tops from it and maybe some wide 2" sticks,,,,thanks
Yes we could. However comparing a 4.75mm kerf to a bandsaws kerf of 2-3mm... the swing blade will win over a full day's milling as it is. No wavy boards. Straight and true timber through and through. Don't get caught up in the myth. Our blades are proven! We milled 1600bf that day and I still haven't sharpened the blade. No wavy timber either.
We could offer a much narrower kerf for you but then we get into the same issues a bandsaw has... Must have the teeth sharpened just right. Must have a specific form of lubricant. Must feed the saw just right to not strain the blade. Needs sharpening regularly. And so on... Wouldn't you rather an option that simply cuts true and straight timber without any headaches? I feel that's what our sawyer prefer.
There is a lot of saw dust! These type of saw mills while fast you must loose some boards due to thick kerk of blade versus mills that use thin kerf blades
We run our new Turbokerf blades now days (our revolutionary new design blade). Model 6 can use as thin as 4.5mm kerf. The model 8 can now run as little as 5mm So actually these saws will have a better recovery factoring in consistently straight timber through the day (shavings look like hay). A bandsaw will lose whatever was considered to be savings at the secondary planing stage due to deviation or waves in the timber. I watch in horror just how much timber is wasted at shows using a band mill. Heavy slabs and a lack of sufficient re-handling and re-edging. Also shavings are a result of an efficient circular cut with just the right amount of teeth. A bandsaw will saw through the same particle over and over giving you dust like bi-product rendering it almost useless for re-use. Bandsaw dust also compacts very well so it gives you an impression of savings. Operation of these mills couldn't be simpler. Cut to your list of sizes as you move through the log. Resulting in minimal waste!
TheDave570 great for wide boards too. ua-cam.com/video/DiZzY4RAyz8/v-deo.html also the do not shoot out that’s a miss conception this isn’t a twin saw.
Super efficient. Well done!
That's impressive. Thanks for sharing.
I don't think it can be beat, for a 1 man mill.

Extremely effective. How much does such a glory cost?

Our mills are able to saw up any diameter log. This model (the M8) will cut an 8"x8" block or double cut up to 16" wide by 7" deep.
It's not the right mill if you want to make big slabs, for that you would probably want a big chainsaw mill.
diyVT we actually make a range of slabber options to fit this mill.
Good to know that's an option. I didn't mean to miss represent your mill seeing as this is the first time I have seen one.

Great for 2x4s.!! If that board catches on the blade as he picks it up it'll shoot out of there like a rocket !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
