    the reason your balance is off is because weight distribution is thrown forward and raptors have a tail for counterbalance

      Not really, we have neither the hips and legs, or stance of a raptor. If we could build something that gave us their leg-power, we might need a counter-balance, maybe. Canine's balance issues are mostly due to wearing stiff stilts without much practice.

    these need to extend up the thigh for more leg structure and suport, also alot of shock will be traveling up the spine.

  • @CanineHybrid
    @CanineHybrid  11 років тому +89

    They are extremely cumbersome, however the footage from the video was only after a few hours of practice on the day I got them and I just wanted to show them off as soon as possible... so most of the trouble with them was simply my inexperience at the time of filming. If you'd like to see a much better performance in stilts, check out my newer video testing out the Area 51 digilegs. These guys are quite the deadweight strapped to my legs at 15 lbs total.

    Day 1 was... omg. It kinda got my hopes up for awhile because I was such a wimp and couldn't even stand for more than 10 seconds and fell over a few times. I felt like I wouldn't be able to adequately use them in a costume at all! I'm happy to say now that my optimism is back and I will indeed master these stilts! I've got 6 months to do so- go go go!

    Monoyasha is no longer selling raptor head blanks, but her velociraptor serves as much inspiration and her personal help will still be involved with bringing this costume to life. I am very much indebted to her for creating such awesomeness that showed me that my own was also possible... and I did have the opportunity to get my hands on examining one of her raptor blanks that a friend of mine had purchased.
    Therefore I will be instead sculpting my own to match Theod's size and proportions.

    @CanineHybrid  12 років тому

    I would love to use the legs in a future robot-inspired costume! You can most likely plan on me doing so in the future. However as an animation major and this being a portfolio piece, I wanted to explore an organic character this time around. The character also has a set of armor I'm looking to one day upgrade him to and therefore will appear much more cyborg/sci-fi like.
    Also the raptor isn't furry, it will be made from velour and airbrushed to give the look of scales.

    First of all I want to clarify that did not make these- they were commissioned from a friend with some bike building experience and access to a welder, not a professional prop maker or engineer, so I had no hand in the actual construction to ensure they would be durable and safe to use. It was a costly mistake but it can't be helped; now I'm approaching the production of a new pair much smarter. I am unsure by what you mean when you mention to "make them straight", perhaps you can clarify?

    What if you did this with the springs of jumping stilts instead of one rigid support? Maybe modify jumping stilts so the foot plate is adjustable enough you get this type effect. Might end up being easier to walk around in with the recoil the spring would give.

  • @TheLordKanti
    @TheLordKanti 13 років тому

    They look great. The force your legs into the right position to fit the character's bone structure. However, it looks really strenuous to walk in from an objective point of view. Do the stilts counter balance the extra weight on your legs from being in a semi-crouch position? I would think it'd be like walking around on your tip-toes while hunched over.

    I always love videos with stilts like these.
    Personally what I want to do myself is make a Minotaur costume. I'm a big guy who loves freedom of movement, so the idea of wearing very long stilts like that doesn't sit well with me (mostly because I'm afraid I'd break them), but thankfully minotaurs are tough, broad, and brawny, so smaller stilts that are tougher shouldn't be too hard for a guy like me to wear.
    I hope this costume got completed. ^^
