@@TheGuitarShow so what I’m actually going to do (it’s ordered lol) is a Jazzmaster style guitar from Lewis Guitars, called an Adélie). It’s going to have three of those Dynasonics, with a four way switch. Neck, neck and bridge, bridge, and off. The middle pickup will have a blue led push button that will activate the middle pickup in any position (just to make it a little quirky), mastery bridge/trem and there will also be a kill switch. Just put a Gretsch Hi-lotron in the neck of my telecaster yesterday. The balance with the broadcaster bridge pickup is perfect. It's got a lovely clear sound and happily shares a 250k pot with the bridge. It doesn't have that same dynasonic bite, but I'm really chuffed.

It’s been really fun collecting parts for the last few years to make a killer telecaster. Im having Carson Hess do the neck for me and it should be done soon. You definitely inspired the neck pickup decision.
Thanks for the wire suggestion. I made a Jazzmaster pickup with Strat length magnets and twice the normal space for wire than a normal Jazzmaster. They are not far off of these Dearmonds. The 43 wire would smooth them a bit. I might try making them with 1/4” magnets after seeing these and the insides of Ric Toasters.

And in Martin guitars. They are precursors to the Rickenbacker Toaster and the Jazzmaster pickups, altho neither of those allow for adjustment of the individual magnets. Schaller made some copies of this pickups design in the late 60's which were used in Ovations electrics.
Hi, I have a set of the later Dearmond 2000 pickups they are surface mount flat backs unlike the originals. I was thinking of getting them fitted to a Fender Blacktop Telecaster. I'm hoping that they fit the humbucker routes. I do have a 50s original bridge pickup and I am looking for a neck now.
43 gauge wire has more resistance i think and those pickups are wound close to Gibson pickups specs. That would explain why they sound clear and bright because of less wire needed on the bobbin to get to the same DC resistance. I may be wrong about that though. Because it's just a big flat slab of wood. It seems like the perfect nodding platform. Even though a strat is probably easier, because all 3 pickups on a strat are where the pick guard is. So as long as you rout out the whole thing, you can fit any type of pickup in there. Whereas the tele bridge complicates things. You have to buy a new bridge to get it to work.
I had a Tele with a TV Jones and a WideRange that sounded great. I had to part from it as it weighed quite a bit with its Bigsby… but it was a fine guitar. Can’t keep’em all, can you ? Cheers Ramon ! 🎸👋🏻
Hepcat pickups (Paris) makes replicas of these also, very good pickups, I have some J bass and guitar models; they do vintage type only, handwound, all sound great. Your tele sounds really nice.
Sounds great. On the Fender/Guild/Dearmond guitars around the millennium, I did some research once, as I have their M75T. Apparently ... there were two types of pickup used. The first ones were called 2K and were real dynasonics; later they called them 2000 and those ones were P90s in a dynasonic casing. The way to tell them apart is that the 2Ks had ever so slightly bevelled edges on the pole pieces, while the 2000s were sheared across. I have the 2Ks and they definitely sound like yours. Not identical, of course, because no two things are the same, but they have the same signature, a kind of liquid twanginess. I know P90s, and they are nothing like those. Are you still using it, three years later?
Fender made the Tele-Sonic in the early 00s with factory Dearmonds. It's the guitar on the poster for the remake of "Freaky Friday" with Jamie Curtis. Darn near bought one.
Ramon, Are you sure about the pickups resistance readings you stated? You said "about 7.0-7.5k" ohms. I ask because I've read that vintage Dynasonics had readings in the range 8k - 12k.
43g wire will have a higher reading than 42g wire for the same "output"- a pickup wound with 43g wire reading 7k will be the same as one wound with 42g wire in the high 5k. The 43g will have more of a (high) mid focus and be more compressed. I don't know where you are getting your info that the de armonds were wound with 43g; many modern day winders go with 42g (personally I would go with 42g as I like the most "open" sounding pickup I can find).
Hi I read this in the guitar player American magazine they did a feature on these a pickups a few years back but Ill ask Marc at mojo pickups he should be able to let me know
Big fan of Dearmond pickups. I have the g5129 that is my workhorse. I’m building a partscaster and to add a dearmond pickup would be awesome. I have a white one but would prefer a black.
@@TheGuitarShow the white ones I had were a lot more dirtier sounding. The black sound more like a single coil. I’m partial to the black for my particular tone. I tried many different pickups/guitar from p90 to lipstick to fender single coil. Nothing compares to the dearmond tone. Come to find out all the famous spaghetti westerns we’re from those pickups.
There are six DeArmonds in my house. Three in my 1967 H59 Rocket III, two in my 1963 H17 Silhouette and one 210 sound hole pickup. Ever play any old Harmonys, Ramon?
@@TheGuitarShow Checked out Justin Adams with Plant. Wow, big old H75. Same model Dan Auerbach uses with The Black Keys. A lot of years ago a neighbor had a yard sale and had a tobacco sunburst H59 Rocket III (mine is redburst) and a big Silvertone piggyback amp, like a 1484, for sale at $50.00 each. This idiot walked away.
I'm an armature, but isn't there a modern easy to find affordable equivalent of this pickup? You would think someone is able to wind these? Are they wound with unicorn hair? Great video!
Hi yes there are lots of cheaper repros of these just google dynasonics and you should find varients by various makers. The originals are pretty special!
Beautiful! I know you mentioned Frisells's guitar as an inspiration, but does your guitar have a short scale neck as well? Thanks for the amazing content btw!
I've recently acquired a DC Junior (w/ the one P90) and I'm going: 'hmm these bass strings are oddly DEAD' and then realized it's got them bloody flats and/but out of deference to you I'm keeping 'em for now plus I'm thinking maybe this would be a good time to set me flat pick down
Misery loves company 😞 I had the same situation on my Gretsch and me, being a huge Beatles fan, I kept the flats as long as I could stand it. Then gave in. Round d' rounds much better 😁
@@CaptainCraigKWMRZ I've never tried flat wounds on a guitar, but i have on 2 Hofner violin basses. One was a copy and the other was vintage player grade instrument. I love them on bass. I am also a huge Beatles fan and i don't think i would be able to use flat wounds very long either. It would be cool to play a guitar with some of these Dynasonic pickups for sure. A Duo Jet would be epic, like George H.
i love to play Dynas in the middle position. I have a vintage '60s set and a modern set of 2ks and I love both. The 2Ks sound very close to the old ones and nothing like a P90 IMO :) There are two versions of the 90s ones and one is much closer than the other. You can't body mount the modern ones and they still have the tall metal cases so would need to be routed on a Tele. 2000s is the right model name; Dynasonic is a Gretsch designation only. Structurally they are totally different to a P90. More like a fat Strat pickup. I enjoyed your playing.
@@TheGuitarShow sorry, all got a bit garbled. Gary Donague wrote a good summary on the different types of 2000s a.k.a. Dynasonics. I can't post a link.but people should look for "Identifying DeArmond 200, 2000, and 2K Pickups" As someone who owns all three, I like the vintage and the modern 2000s - the same as are currently sold on the Guild site. The intermediary 2K model is quite a good pickup but doesn't sound much like the original. All would require some routing except on a hollowbody.
I totally dig it. I accidentally purchased a Duo Jet '57 Reissue and it came with the Dynasonic single coil pick ups and I was kinda mad at first until I looked the price difference between the guitar I got and the one I thought I was getting. LOL $2500 difference (shows the shell game that mark up really is) lol. But it did;t take long to fall in love with these pickups. And you gave me a lot of info that backs up what I thought all along. They are my favorite pickups. Do you think the adjustable magnets have a lot to do with the sound. It must they are so much longer. P-90's are nice but not quite the same. Anyway, I like your Tele and your style. Be well....
I've been after that spaghetti recipe for ages. Always thought Id have to get an old jazz master or vintage gretsch (all the cool indie kids have inflated the prices),...dodged that bullet then. cheers for the knowledge man.
except the "knowledge" isn't quite accurate. you didn't dodge any bullet. first of all, let's talk about enrico ciacci. there is, to this day, debate about who actually played on those morricone western soundtracks with at least four different italian guitarists arguing over who played what on those sessions. we don't even actually know who played on them, so imagining which guitar an unknown individual performed with is even more of a stretch. assuming it was enrico ciacci, he most certainly did not use a tele modified with dearmonds. this guitar came way later. to imagine otherwise is nothing more than conjecture and fantasy. early '60s era photographs and videos of ciacci mostly depict him playing a stratocaster. you can also find images of him playing gretsch, gibson, eko, burns, etc. allesandro allesandroni, another one of the guitarists who allegedly played on these tracks, also used a strat during that period. some of the most twangy, spaghetti western-esque riffs you've ever heard, period, were recorded using a fender stratocaster, in fact. hank marvin, james calvin wilsey, dick dale, the ventures....strat, strat, strat. but really, any of these guitars will make this sound. it's more a function of how you play and the right amplifier tone and effects (reverb/echo) than the instrument you are using. hell, even a gibson flying v will do spaghetti western. just listen to wall of voodoo's version of "ring of fire". the king of kings of all spaghetti western tones is the james bond theme, right? well that was played on an old archtop with a funky dearmond rhythm chief 1000 "monkey on a stick" clamp-on pickup! so gretsch will do it (duane eddy), jazzmaster will do it (though a strat is a more versatile sound), a jaguar is also good choice, so is a stock telecaster, dearmond 2000 pickups are great as well. link wray used a firebird, a yamaha, a danelectro...so you see, the guitar just doesn't matter. there is no spaghetti western guitar. the sound is based on composition, style, and production.
@@TheGuitarShow I'm sorely tempted to pick up a Bullet Tele (non string through) and a Chinese 'Fibsy' and see just how far I can get toward that gorgeous tone of yours for

Thanks for the info Rich - I agree they look cool
My band mate has a Tele-sonic and it sounds gorgeous.
Agreed, that's a great sound and I'm hoping get the same results on my 5220 Duo Jet when I swap for the Broadtrons.
nice
Love that pedal steel lick at 10:28
Thanks Bernard
Ramon, Are you sure about the pickups resistance readings you stated? You said "about 7.0-7.5k" ohms. I ask because I've read that vintage Dynasonics had readings in the range 8k - 12k.
yes Ill check again but I'm pretty sure that's correct
43g wire will have a higher reading than 42g wire for the same "output"- a pickup wound with 43g wire reading 7k will be the same as one wound with 42g wire in the high 5k. The 43g will have more of a (high) mid focus and be more compressed. I don't know where you are getting your info that the de armonds were wound with 43g; many modern day winders go with 42g (personally I would go with 42g as I like the most "open" sounding pickup I can find).
Hi I read this in the guitar player American magazine they did a feature on these a pickups a few years back but Ill ask Marc at mojo pickups he should be able to let me know
Where can I buy a pair of DeArmond Dynasonic's? l can't seem to find them for sale anywhere.
Big fan of Dearmond pickups. I have the g5129 that is my workhorse. I’m building a partscaster and to add a dearmond pickup would be awesome. I have a white one but would prefer a black.
I like the white ones which Guild always used - Gretschs used the black ones.
Awesome sound Thnx
Pleasure Timothy
Amazing sound,thank you.
Thanks
There are six DeArmonds in my house. Three in my 1967 H59 Rocket III, two in my 1963 H17 Silhouette and one 210 sound hole pickup. Ever play any old Harmonys, Ramon?
Yes I love old harmonys my good friend Justin Adams uses one with Robert Plants.. Sounds killer!!
TV Jones T'Armonds. Unlike many other pickups these are quite complicated to build hence the reason you don't see many pickup builders attempting them
Can someone please provide dimensions for the pickguard rout and the depth these need?
Hi,how deep is the hole of the pickup and how many mm is the distance from string to pickup

Ill try to get this info - theres 2 sizes of these old ones - try to get the shallower one.
Which mastery bridge is that?
Its the one for telecasters with holes both for top loading and also string though the body
What a wicked game you play.
Thanks
Beautiful! I know you mentioned Frisells's guitar as an inspiration, but does your guitar have a short scale neck as well? Thanks for the amazing content btw!
Thanks Bernardo - no, mine is normal Fender scale.
@@TheGuitarShowawesome. thanks for taking the time to answer :)
Been my favorite pick up tone since I really dug into tone about 15 plus years ago .
Mine too!
Killer tone my guy
Many thanks indeed Chuck
amazing fingers, I love dearmonds btw

What is the song you're playing at 5.20 please ? what a great sound man !
Sleepwalk by Santo and Johnny - many thanks Chris!
what capacitors did to you add to your telecaster for the dynasonic pickups?
Its a Dublier capacitor - standard tele values - thanks!
I've recently acquired a DC Junior (w/ the one P90) and I'm going: 'hmm these bass strings are oddly DEAD' and then realized it's got them bloody flats and/but out of deference to you I'm keeping 'em for now plus I'm thinking maybe this would be a good time to set me flat pick down
Yes Flats are awesome, i like round wounds as well both equally... Just realised I didnt use a pick in this video lol
Would you say that Deamond vintage 65 goldfoil with 7.5K would sound close to yours or how different.
good question- Im not quite sure as the magnets on the Dynas are pretty unique.
i love to play Dynas in the middle position.
Many thanks for the great comment thank you 🙏
@@TheGuitarShow sorry, all got a bit garbled.
Gary Donague wrote a good summary on the different types of 2000s a.k.a. Dynasonics. I can't post a link.but people should look for "Identifying DeArmond 200, 2000, and 2K Pickups"
As someone who owns all three, I like the vintage and the modern 2000s - the same as are currently sold on the Guild site. The intermediary 2K model is quite a good pickup but doesn't sound much like the original. All would require some routing except on a hollowbody.
how about neck dynasonic with tele bridge??
That would be amazing
@@TheGuitarShow do you recommend duncan or tv jones fornthe pickup? I was planning on slapping one into my ibanez talman
Pleasure I really hope this helps you - yeah I don't have the dough for one of those beautiful old Gretschs.
except the "knowledge" isn't quite accurate. you didn't dodge any bullet. first of all, let's talk about enrico ciacci. there is, to this day, debate about who actually played on those morricone western soundtracks with at least four different italian guitarists arguing over who played what on those sessions. we don't even actually know who played on them, so imagining which guitar an unknown individual performed with is even more of a stretch. assuming it was enrico ciacci, he most certainly did not use a tele modified with dearmonds. this guitar came way later. to imagine otherwise is nothing more than conjecture and fantasy. early '60s era photographs and videos of ciacci mostly depict him playing a stratocaster. you can also find images of him playing gretsch, gibson, eko, burns, etc. allesandro allesandroni, another one of the guitarists who allegedly played on these tracks, also used a strat during that period. some of the most twangy, spaghetti western-esque riffs you've ever heard, period, were recorded using a fender stratocaster, in fact. hank marvin, james calvin wilsey, dick dale, the ventures....strat, strat, strat. but really, any of these guitars will make this sound. it's more a function of how you play and the right amplifier tone and effects (reverb/echo) than the instrument you are using. hell, even a gibson flying v will do spaghetti western. just listen to wall of voodoo's version of "ring of fire". the king of kings of all spaghetti western tones is the james bond theme, right? well that was played on an old archtop with a funky dearmond rhythm chief 1000 "monkey on a stick" clamp-on pickup! so gretsch will do it (duane eddy), jazzmaster will do it (though a strat is a more versatile sound), a jaguar is also good choice, so is a stock telecaster, dearmond 2000 pickups are great as well. link wray used a firebird, a yamaha, a danelectro...so you see, the guitar just doesn't matter. there is no spaghetti western guitar. the sound is based on composition, style, and production.
Man, now that is Chime City. Lovely tones and playing. What type of bridge/pickup ring are you using for the bridge pickup? Thanks for posting.
You mean what pickup? Thanks and sorry for the delayed response.
Bought some Gretsch Dynas for a future build. What value Dublier do you have in that Tele?
Let me check bro
I'd love to hear what the £59 Guild DeArmond Dynasonics on DV247 sound like in comparrison. :)

are they noisy when not in middle position?
Hi so glad I stumbled across you whilst researching dysanonic pickups. I’m fitting a pair to a Jazzmaster style guitar that I’m building for someone. What was the capacitor you used? Love your tone mate 😀
Thanks David for your kind words - I put a green Dublier Cornell cap in this guitar - normal Tele spec.

not really, thanks!
So, dynasonic is the same as t armond,,?? Same thing?? Thnxx brother ❤
