- This is my "pilot" to a new series I want to make this fall.
In this episode we meet the drifter Joachim Waagard with his V8 Mazda RX7 that he has built and already had one season drifting in. I hope to make more episodes of Joachim and some other people for my series. Everything with horsepower to stance perfection.
If I can get some sponsors into the mix, I hope to make 10-12 episodes this fall.

It's great to see that people do what they love, and yet take the time to share it with us. This will be a good series.
Guys look at Mad Mikes 4 rotor RX7... sure its sick and sounds sick but he constantly runs into reliability issues... with Mad Mike's drift machine an engine rebuild is probably necessary after every drift event. With an lsx based engine you don't have that problem. Power delivery is good, wide torque band, and reliability for days. These factors coupled up with the light twitchy frame of the RX7 FD would probably make one of the smartest, but competitive platforms for competitive drifting. This guy has used his brain.

Every RX7 with a V8 on youtube never fails to have rotary purists in the comments section, saying that it's ruined or not even an RX7 anymore.......Y'all can shut up now. We get it. You don't like it.....Move on with your lives.
This is why I want to go with a differen't engine besides a rotary... I love rotary but I love the rx-7 more.. we all need to move on with our lives.
i own an ls2 rx7 as well and your car is basically what i plan to do with mine one day good shit man this is an inspiring video for me.

I know the RX7 wasn't made for an LS engine, and the LS engine wasn't made for the RX7, but goddammit, it sure looks like these two get along just fine.

The FD is a good chassis, two bad is 20yrs old now. Hope you stich welded the chassis when you took a part.

LS2 has lower end torque which is desired in drifting, it's reliable, easy to get a hell of a lot of power out of, and so much easier to get parts for.
Its insane how upset people get just because this guy did what he wanted with his car. If you don't like the fact that he swapped the rotary for a V8 then just keep it to yourself there's no use in hating on this guy for doing what he is obviously very passionate about, and i'm very doubtful that your opinion is going to change his.

a quad rotor would be better because a quad will spool up some of the biggest turbos around, and it will spool them very quick, this provides a massive and nearly flat torque curve and also it sounds better :)

nope, american v8 has more torque and power but quad rotor just sounds absolutely amazing the exhaust note is phenomenal

How did he get such a lot of angle from an FD ? What mods?
there are kits for steering angles (hubs, knuckles, arms) which allow up too 70 degrees lock
nothing like reliable power. I love love love my rotary but honestly if i was drifting like this guy it would be a v8 or a 2jz.

In terms of high-RPM, rotary engine perform better, yeah... that, and the relatively high redline.
Thing is, rotaries really struggle for torque, and like it or not, a good acceleration is MUCH more important than top speed.
And BTW, I'm a fan of rotaries over other engines... I just don't blind myself to other options

I agree, keeping an rx7 as a rotary engine is much more respectable. Put your v8 in an s14.

i would have kept the rotary or gone with like a 2jz
much lighter than a big V8. 13b only weights 77 kg so that would make it 154 kg with another 13b attached to it.

Not an RX7 anymore, now it's an X7. :( nice looks though
maybe it would pay homage to the original engine that came with the car! Obviously a quad rotor would perform just as well as the v8, some people think that its sacrilege! but hey its a matter of opinion, and if you dont have the resources to work with a rotary, then hey slap a v8 in there!
