This might be too early to ask, but is there the possibility Tara and Roxy will watch the Extended Versions of these movies in the future and maybe react to them?
You gotta remember that Theodon was just coming out of a spell that weakened him both physically and mentally, only to find that his friend betrayed him, his nephew was banished, his son was dead, and an army was coming to kill his people. On top of all that, he has no army to defend them. Theodon was struggling, which is why Gandalf told Aragorn he would need him, not to take over, but to help remind him who he is.
I remember watching this with my housemate. When he came out of the spell she said "All of you saw me like this and nobody said shyt, huh!!" That scene cracks me up every time now.
this was gonna happen at some reacting channel no matter what, different readings and perspectives summarize this situation,i just ignored the way they treat theoden
I didn’t see king Theodeon as negative or cowardly but having a normal reaction of despair due to how overwhelmed they were. That despair comes from his love for his people and their fate. Don’t worry I think they’ll change their minds with the last movie. The movie also doesn’t show how Theodeon got to this point of despair. It could be guilt because he was under Saurumon’s influence that led to the death of his son. I don’t know, I like King Theodeon .
29:01 Not many realize, heck I just realized it--he said "what did you call ME?" Golem always refers to himself as "us". Frodo brought out Smeagol, and for the moment he wasn't "two people" he was himself. Such a small detail that has so much meaning.
Theoden is an amazing leader, he's only just come back from being basically brainwashed for years and when he comes to his senses everything around him is falling apart. His son is dead, his nephew and army is gone, and he needs help remembering the man he once was which is why Gandalf tells our three lads to stick by him. Y'all bagging on him constantly is breaking my heart a little.
The movie really is to blame though that is no excuse to audiences being sheep that will uncritically accept characters they like doing the wrong thing as the right thing, I can't see why Peter Jackson and the writers decided to make it out as if Theoden is doing anything other than the smartest possible thing. Evacuating Edoras which is clearly not defencible against Isengard's armies while Gandalf is portrayed as the voice of reason for advocating a suicidal open field battle against the Uruks even though Theoden doesn't have most of his strength.
@@jonttulHe also decided to relegate Gimli to being little more than comic relief, which is on the same level of disrespect as portraying Theoden as largely spineless and incompetent.
Agree. It's basically as if Gandalf would cast out Klaus Schwab out of Justin Trudeau. Justin'd need a hot minute to think before being be able to unfuck the mess Canada is in.
The reason the 2 soldiers couldn't see Sam and Frodo is because the fellowship got gifts from Galadriel. The elven cloaks are woven by herself and her maides, acting as camouflage for "unfriendly" eyes
@@Milleniumlance It is not a mess which is an extreme thing to say. The extended edition has unnecessary scenes that hurt the pacing including the awful moment of Eowyn singing.
@@Milleniumlance The extended edition of ROTK is the edition to watch for that film where cutting out Saruman specifically is something that should not have happened. The cloak being camouflage in The Two Towers is something you just figure out. It’s not something that most people get confused by honestly. That is not an example of leaving out an entire narrative. The extended edition of The Two Towers is the worst one of the three.
@@Milleniumlance They wouldn't have been confused by the cloak thing if they didn't talk over Sam's expository dialogue that mentions the Elvish cloak hiding them (which he says immediately after they stand up). The only reason Roxy and Tara are confused here is because they spend half the movie talking over dialogue and trying to guess what just happened or what's going to happen instead of listening to the actual dialogue that explains what's happening.
Ladies, no one was fighting in Mordor yet... no one has made it to Mordor yet. The Battle of Helms Deep was at Helms Deep and the March of the Ents was at Isengard.
This reaction is so frustrating 🤦🤦 like it doesn't seem they understand anything in the movie, they are just watching for the sake of it, and before anyone say well what do you except they didn't read the books, well u Don't need the books to understand the movies, they are very very clear with everything honestly lord of the rings becomes my favorite fantasy story of all time cuz of the movies.
@@john_7000These movies are very detailed and intricate, and I can understand them getting confused at times. I watched these films for the first time as a child so I can’t say for certain what it’s like to watch them for the first time as an adult, but my god can we not jump to conclusions and make negative comments about them? Let’s not forget that they’re watching the movies as well as having to make sure they’re commentating enough to make content. If you watched something this long, with a lot of locations, and characters, for the first time while also trying to commentate, you might find yourself similarly mixing up parts of the movie. This is for entertainment let’s just enjoy these lovely ladies instead of criticizing.
I’m going to sound like a complete nerd right now, it was actually played on Hardanger Fiddle’s not Violins- their sound helps create that lasting impression and effect. I also agree with your statement 100%.
The Theoden Slander is wild. Man literally spend years under mental subjugation and awoke to his son’s death and the world ending. He’s failing as king right now because he literally hasn’t been king for years. He is tired and low on hope. Theoden is a great king, and is doing his best in the world he was brought back into.
Yeah, slandering Théoden for waxing poetic about the cruelties of war in a film based on a literary work that is hyper-critical of combat (due to the author's own personal experiences) kind of misses the entire point... ...but it's also not their fault that the movies completely butcher the book's characterisation of Théoden by abandoning his sound tactics in favor of ones that are not even internally consistent. They say there's no escape from Helm's Deep, then in the last moment reveal that there's actually an escape? Gandalf says the Rohirrim should stand and fight, then Aragorn later (rightly) admits Helms Deep is more defensible than Edoras? Make it make sense!
Roxy: since you havent seen it, and i have, let me lead you into what I barely remember and completely misunderstood., and we'll both miss what's actually happening.
When Andy Serkis auditioned for the role Gollum was originally going to pure animation and he was just gonna do the voice, but then in the audition he impressed the casting director and Peter Jackson so much that they said he should actually play the part physically with Elijah Wood and Sean Astin. They then decided that because they couldn’t use makeup to create Gollum that they instead use motion capture like the kind used in video games, like Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater. And that one legendary performance led to the creation of what is now know as Performance Capture, which Andy Serkis is now the absolute master of. And as for the voice he got the idea for it from seeing his cat coughing up a hairball.
No Theoden slander. He spent months being broken physically and emotionally by Saruman, and then awoke to realize he had been puppeteered to exile his troops and that his son was dead bc of his tainted (by Saruman) leadership. His depression makes total sense. Also, it was Aragorn who spared Grima, leading to Saruman knowing Helms Deep’s weakness, which endangered the women and children, and allowed the Uruk-Hai to really overwhelm the soldiers
But if Aragorn did not spare Grima, Saruman's army would go into Rohan and siege their capital city. Where everyone would have died for sure. Going to Helms Deep actually saved lives.
@@NecramoniumVideo nah, they attacked at Helm's Deep because that's where Rohan went. Theoden chose to bail on the capital separately from the whole Grima thing
Theoden King is an exceptional character, and hopefully they'll realize this by the end of the final film. He's my favorite from the books, and RIP Bernard Hill for doing such a great job with him in this adaptation.
@@Orbitalbomb what are you even talking about, how was he weak in anyway. Like to see you in that situation, you'd be in the cave with the women and children.

The wizards in LOTR are angelic beings. They all look after a portion of creation. The gray wizard is tasked with helping humans, the white is responsible for fighting evil. When Sauraman betrayed his duties, Gandalf was given his job basically. That’s why you don’t really see them do much magic. There power is ancient and very specific to what they are tasked with
@@texasortega we don't know. Tolkien never wrote stories outside the continent of middle earth (unless you count the western parts that are underwater now), so it was never revealed to him what roles or task Eru had for them.
@@texasortega The Blue Wizards went off into the far east, to "enemy occupied lands" as Tolkein describes in one of his letters, to formant discontent and rebellion though it seems Tolkien never quite decided what happened to them. We even have two sets of names for both! To correct a misconception mentioned above, all the wizards were sent with the task of aiding "Free Peoples" in resisting Sauron. Radagast merely decided to focus his efforts with animals and plants instead, which is why he (just like Saruman and the Blue Wizards) is considered to have "failed" his task.
Seeing all the comments about the Theoden slander and "Not paying attention" saved me 2 hours of my life I'd have to struggle with same as you. Thanks for your service, fellow commenters.
Love the LOTR reactions. I’m from New Zealand and was fortunate enough to work on the trilogy. I was a background stunt fighter, extra and also did some behind the scenes stuff. It was an incredible experience and I got to play many different characters. Filming The Battle of Helms Deep was an amazing time. The atmosphere on set was amazing. It was like we were one great big family and everyone just wanted to give their all! I think that passion shines through on screen.
That’s awesome brother, I’m super jealous. You were apart of something truly special. Helms deep is the best battle in cinema history and it’s awesome that you were there for the making of it.
You noticed right away that none of the actors seem to have aged. That's because all three movies were shot as one huge integrated project over the course of 18 months, and then edited and released around Christmas over three years. Really enjoying your reactions! 😃
Which they NEVER make trilogies like that. They always leave an out, in case the first movie flops. Then they only lose money on one movie, instead of two or three. This project was a giant gamble. Tackling a project of this size. And a piece of literature this beloved. Easily could have gone south.
@ And Harvey Weinstein tried to torpedo the various deals as he had the rights at one point and allowed Jackson to go elsewhere under very onerous conditions. Jackson wanted 2 films but the head of New Line said a trilogy would be better. They also upped the budget after a 26 min preview was shown at Cannes.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy was one of the riskiest film projects in modern film. It took 20+ distributors to finance the film; some of which would have gone under if the films flopped.
When you finish the final movie I expect an apology video for Theodon. Greg you need to make this happen. I’m being patient because I understand they haven’t finished the story but damn.
An apology video for Theoden? You know it's just a film, yes? A great film, for sure but there's a lot more to get upset about in the real world. This is merely a reaction video. It's not like anyone has been hurt or oppressed.
Alright Theodin is literally the best king we see acting as king. He was fucked over by Grima and Sauron having been freed from essentially a waking sleep he realized his kingdom is under siege and he's at war. He tells his people to flee rather then be overrun by orcs and slaughtered in droves. At the very least he wanted to save women and children.
I was 23 when these came out. They have changed my life for good. As an ex-drug addict, I understand the ring. There are no words to describe how important these films are to me.
I keep saying. It never fails with these reactors. If they are reacting to LOTR, the inevitable Theoden hate will happen. If they are reacting to Star Wars, the inevitable Lando hate will happen. It is so weird that they can't grasp the situation they are both in.
it’s even weirder to me coz i remember watching both of those movies at less than ten years old and understanding that characters can have different motivations… yet they are grown adults who have no ability to think from another’s perspective…
Guys amazing detail.. Look at 1:17:02 .. While Haldir is greeting Aragorn, Elvish soldiers didnt respond anything..But..While Legolas and Haldir greet each other, at that exact moment Elvish soldiers return to them and do respectful military standing salute. Because Legolas is the son and heir of King Thranduil. He is the prince of the Elven kingdom of Mirkwood. And even if Legolas is not their prince, the elves have great respect for the dynasty
@@brownenerdygurl Haldir neither did not participate a Battle in the Helm's Deep in the books, nor got killed there. He was a Galadrim Captain and was never mentioned by Tolkien after the Fellowship had left Lorien
@@brownenerdygurl Yeh the Elves were not there in the book, that was made up by Peter Jackson and his writers team. It was a nod to show that there wasnt only fighting at Helms Deep and Gondor. The realms of the Elves were also on constant attack.
Rohan names have lots of “Eo” in them (Theoden, Eomer, Eowyn, Eothain). Tolkien studied languages, particularly old Northern European languages. “Eo” is “horse” in Old English, derived from the Anglo-Saxon. So for the people of Rohan, it was fitting to have “horse” in their names. The founder of Rohan was Eorl.
@@simonwaugh5519 Eh OH yoh REY, knight of Vinya Peoh, Lord of the Centacre Forest? I knew of him and his cohorts, even the great Jagula feared their might. The Horse Lords of Rohan thought he was a bit of an ass, though.
The changing of colours from grey to white is very significant. In the book, Saruman is Saruman the white, but in his attempt to be even more powerful, he breaks the white light and becomes Saruman the many coloured. His cloak takes on a prism effect. It shows his disrespect for the natural order of things, that the wizards were sent to Middle Earth to protect. That is also why Gandalf can break Saruman's spells when he comes back as the white wizard. He has the power of the gods on his side. Saruman has abbondoned that path.
I love that detail, I ***need*** to read the books. 😂🙈 I love that in the films Gandalf is pure white, showing what Saruman should be. Saruman's clothes are darkening, becoming muddied and dirty in comparison showing his downfall. Gandalf embraced his role and Saruman disrespected his.
@@LarissaFay yes, while I prefer the book version of Saruman's downfall, Jackson, Fran and Phillippa made the right choice. It would be very difficult to convey the prism on screen.
There's a very important scene in the extended version of this movie with Boromir and Faramir's father. It greatly helps explains both the brother's motivations in this trilogy and especially towards the ring. It also helps explain the father son relationship which is important for the next movie. That being said, I'm super glad you are watching these movies at all.
Eh, the relationship is explained well enough in Return of the King without needing the extended scene in this one. That said, it IS a very good scene.
The uninterest in the actual plot and characters make me think they should just skip the third movie and go on to react to / talk over another movie.. This is just heartbreaking.
Whenever I am at my absolute lowest about the state of my life or the state of the world and all I want to do is give up, I just remember what Samwise The Brave said. *“There is still good left in this world, and it’s worth fighting for.”*

According to wiki they shot the whole trilogy's principle photography from Oct '99 to Dec '00 in 438 days, with pick-up shoots done in 2001-2003. They knew it was going to be a big project, that it had to look like it all happened in the span of a year or so, and they just went for it. It was a massive undertaking and it was absolutely worth the effort of the cast & crew to make it happen.
fun fact i come from the home of tolkien where he came up with the hobbit ( sarehole mill moseley Birmingham , New zealand in not Middle Earth , Nice try tho )
Right? 😱 Am starting (at the halfway point) to think this reaction could be boiled down to "Theoden sucks, so does everyone else, except Aragorn". Oy. EDIT: But points for totally seeing the value of Sam. 👏👏👏
Honestly I was always frustrated by him too, in the immediacy of the story's circumstances. It took me a while to grow some compassion for his character in the midst of his decision making here ❤
@lisabeloved I don't think people here are able to put themselves in the shoes of a first time viewer. Theoden IS portrayed as being a little bit "foolish" in the movie, their reaction is warranted. You usually come around in the third about Theoden.
The horse that finds Aragorn is from a deleted scene that you would of seen in the extended cut, the horse in question is Brego, he belonged to the King Theodens son. (Now dead) In the scene Aragorn calms Brego in the stables and requests the horse be set free "he has seen enough of war".
The Battle of Helm’s Deep goes down as one of my favourite moments in cinema, I’ve watched it hundreds of times. Just absolutely brilliant! Can’t wait to see what you both thought of it!
Theodon is the “regular” dude/leader who knows he isn’t a hero of his age, won’t be able to live up to his ancestors prior deeds, knows things are drastically dire, but still chooses the right thing, still fights and still leads.
He's a regular man, who has so many people to try and take care of, and he's like 70 years old just coming out of being under a horrible spell that enslaved his mind and body, and his only child just died. Like, yeah, he's not sunshine and rainbows and he's just doing the best he can with the experience he has. But he's a good man and he learns and that's why I love him so much.
Viggo is Aragorn. Not just an actor but a painter, photographer, sculptor, published books of poetry, recorded musical albums. Viggo speaks 7 languages, 8 including Elvish. Viggo is an expert Horse rider & trainer. Training his horse to kneel down and pick him up from the river. That is very hard to get a horse to do! Viggo bought the horse and his horse from Hidalgo. A stuntwoman on LOTRs became very close to the horse she was doing stunts on (Arwen's Horse). At the end of the production the horse was being sold. The Stuntwoman could not afford to buy the Horse and was heartbroken. Viggo found out and bought the Horse for her. When Viggo was not need on the set of LOTRs for filming he and his horse would ride off into the mountains. Living off the land for days. I highly recommend 2 Viggo movies "A History of Violence" and "Eastern Promises". He is brilliant in both!!
@Vincent8190X The Road is the most realistic apocalypse movie ever made! Yes it's brilliant. The book was voted the greatest written book for that decade 2000-10. Viggo's very first film appearance is in Witness with Harrison Ford.
I always find it so interesting that a movie like LOTR that gives you every answer to every question...people still somehow find a way to ask question or strays off the path. Just mind boggling
Cuz those ppl dont know how to listen. They hear it but it goes in one ear & out the other. Nowadays it has to he bright colors & crazy shit happening with fights & explosions so ppl dont have to think.
You'd have to have read the books. Yeah, these movies didn't adequately show Denethor or Theoden's better sides when they were uncorrupted. Personally, as an anarchist, I would call any king corrupt, but that's more about the position than the man himself. Control comes from ownership, and no man owns other men rightfully.
@@BattleAngelFan99 Having a King is not much different than having billiionaire elites that control society including those you're allowed to vote for. Something it took awhile for me to grasp and i notice reactors miss when they question if gollum is playing up the pain when the rope is around his neck: most elvish items are enchanted or just imbued with the magic that is naturally part of the elves' life energy. Gollum, being tainted by evil, is naturally pained by the magic in the rope. Its also why the lembas bread "tries to chokes us"
He said the rope "It burns! It freezes!". it was giving him frostbite which feels a lot like burning believe me, I know. Ya many reactors don't realize that the rope is hurting Gollum and it hurts even more if he resists or tries to remove it.
King Theoden is an often underestimated character. At the time of the story, he is an old man of 70 and has ruled Rohan well for over 40 years, defending it against orcs and many other dangers. At this point, he had actually wanted to pass the regency on to his son and rock his grandchildren on his knees. Then he is mentally enslaved by Saruman, his son dies and he has to go back into battle. Then comes Aragorn, the pretender to the throne of Gondor, who gives him advice. And in the end he knows that it was Aragorn, not him, who won the battle at Helm's Deep. Although he can look back on a long and good reign, he has deep self-doubts as to whether he is a good king. This is also the reason for his occasional unruly behavior. But in the end, he always knows the right thing to do. He is one of the greatest and noblest characters in the triology.
All of this is valid but to be clear, Theoden didn’t think Aragorn was a pretender to the throne. He knows who he is and that Aragorn fought with his father Thengel. It’s a pretty big reason why he even listened to pep talk in the keep even though these were basically reversed from the book.
This is NOT how these two usually react to stuff. Sure they get engrossed in the movie and try to figure out what was happening but, with Fellowship they seemed to be stuck on prediction mode. This one, not as much but, still a lot. I think someone there gave them some advice or info and it spun them out. Perhaps the length of these made them worried they wouldn't react enough. I know that can be an issue on YT reactions. I still enjoyed the reaction. It is just interesting to note.
Unbearable. I spent 3 days trying to make it through this reaction. I'm done. Pulling the chord. I'm out. Luckily, there are other reactors watching the LOTR films. I'm just not a Roxy fan. Just not my pot of tea, and that's fine. "Where are the trees!?" Wait? What? Wow!
I honestly wonder what my Theoden feelings would be if I had only seen the first two movies and I was live reacting to it. The Theoden slander bugged me a bit as well but their commentary is pretty accurate based on what they have seen so far.
@@JMorris89 I think it depends on your knowledge of warfare tactics. Preferably siege warfare. To this day I still haven't read the books. I am with Theodan. He doesn't have the numbers. Rohan is best known for their riders. Their cavalry on an open field is hard to beat. Despite that, they can't take on 100 thousand orcs. That's all before their best riders left with the nephew. Theodan's best option is Helms Deep. A siege benefits the defender. Had the wall not blown up, they could have defended against and killed all 100 thousand orcs. Sure they would have lost lots of people, but they would have won. The only questionable decisions he made were to not send riders to ask for help. Something the movie answers. There's no guarantee their plea would be answered. Most likely, he would have sent out riders, soldiers that would be more useful fighting to defend Helms Deep, to ultimately do nothing.

Let me tell you that watching the intro with Gandalf & the Balrog fighting while falling is one of the best theater experiences I've ever had the pleasure of experiencing in person. Hell this whole trilogy is just one long magical "once in a lifetime" theater experience for us who were lucky enough to see it first hand.
That was a pretty sick moment in theaters. I remember I was 12 and still living in Alaska at the time, and the nearest theater was a 4 hour round trip drive over a crazy icy road. But there was so much hype and we all wanted it so much that one of the folks in the community used their big ass van to take about 12 of us to go see it. That scene started and if you looked down the aisle it was just wide eyes, excited grins, and inspired imaginations goin’ crazy. We definitely needed stuff like that.
I’m sad you’re not watching the extended edition. So many of your questions would have been answered and you would have even better character development for all of them. Especially Boromir.
But also weirdly, specifically right! “They have to sneak in. Maybe Gollum knows a secret way in.” Calling that it was probably Gandalf right away. Etc.
The thing you need to understand about Elrond and Arwen is that elves are immortal. On top of that, all of them are leaving Middle Earth. Elrond's wife is already gone, and if Arwen chooses Aragorn she will be left behind. On top of that, she won't die of natural causes eventually. When Aragorn eventually dies, she will just be overcome by a soul crushing sorrow so great that she will die from despair after all the other elves have left Middle Earth. So not only does Elrond want Arwen to stay with him because he will miss her, but he also wants to save her from a dark fate.
Well to be fair, those two aren't yet aware on the overall lore of this franchise. So they don't know the weight of Elrond's reasons for wanting Arwen to go with them to Valinor.
@@terrorazeing All is in the movie. It is just a complicated motivation and isn't explicit enough that I would expect casual viewers to pick it up. It sort of comes across as Elrond being weird and controlling, due to Hugo Weaving being very good at playing cold.
I get far more frustrated than I have any right to be when reactors make a deliberate decision not to watch the extended editions... then constantly ask questions that the extended editions answer. 😒
On the one hand, if it's that important to understanding, it *should* have been in the theatrical cut, and is reasonable to assume that it's there. ...on the other hand, in this case, it wasn't, lol. I have seen a lot of reactors watching the LOTR trilogy and i am impressed by these ladies ability to consistently and without fault, draw out wrong conclusions and misremember every name of characters and places.
Probably doesn't help that the one on the left is constantly talking and making jokes while the other one is trying to pay attention. TBH I don't really watch many reaction channels for this reason. It just annoys me when people pointlessly talk and discuss things that are about to happen in the movie. Oh well.
In regards to the cloak that hid Sam and Frodo and make it look like a giant rock. In the extended version of Fellowship of the Ring, they show that the elves give them special cloaks.
@@jamedraa8472 I was just going to comment this. Sam literally gives a line of exposition in this cut about the Elven cloak hiding them. So much of the time in reactions on this channel, Roxy and Tara are throwing out guesses about what just happened or what's about to happen, and often they're doing it over the top of the line of dialogue that answers the question they're guessing about and so they end up missing it. Then Roxy is all skeptical and like, "I have questions." Meanwhile, I'm sitting there thinking, "You wouldn't have questions if you actually listened to the dialogue instead of trying to guess." Good movies don't make the audience work that hard to come up with theories about what's going on. They give you set-ups and payoffs. Nobody needs to be like, "I wonder if Frodo was really into jewelry in the Shire and that's why the Ring has such a hold on him? Maybe his uncle was a jeweler or something? Did Bilbo talk about working as a jeweler? I think I remember something about that..." or whatever. The movie would give you that info if you needed it. If you're reaching that far, it ain't it. I get that this is a reaction channel and so people need to talk rather than just sit there and watch a movie like a normal person. BUT that talking doesn't have to be constantly trying to guess everything that's going to happen by meta-gaming filmmaking. Tbh, there are a few reaction channels I've unsubscribed from because all their reactions devolved into just constantly trying to guess everything before it happened instead of just watching the movie and enjoying it as it unfolds. It's like, bro, I know you feel clever that you guessed the twist in "The Sixth Sense" halfway through the movie (after throwing out a dozen other wrong guesses first), but, tbh, you ruined the reaction by doing that. Nobody's tuning in to see you pat yourself on the back and go, "I knew it!" They're watching to see you react with shock when the twist is revealed. Just let the movie happen.
did they not see in the last movie when legolas stabbed an orc with an arrow, yanked it out, and then shot ANOTHER orc _with that same arrow_ ? Like, c'mon!
To be fair, that is all his character is. He is just an action powerhouse. Not to say he is a shallow character, he just isn't given as much depth as Frodo, Aragorn, Gandalf, even Arwen.

In the extended cut Sam does tell Sméagol why Frodo did what he did. Roxy’s simping for Aragorn is legendary. Tara, who always says she has a bad memory, got most of the stuff in this Theoden you have to remember was in a trance and woke up to find his only son dead and, oh by the way, there’s 10,000 monsters coming to kill your people and all you have is 300 farmers and children to defend you and no help from anyone anywhere. I think we can forgive him for being a little take aback, king or not.
Everyone defending Theoden, and no-one (in the comments I've read so far) is pointing out that Theoden's plan was completely sound-- he's being *smart* by sitting in the fortress and waiting. He's not giving up, he's putting himself in an advantageous position and is constantly talking about how the enemy will falter against the fortress (even if he doesn't fully believe it) to try to maintain morale (hence the scene were he and Aragorn get into a bit of a tiff about sending out riders: Aragorn seems to think Theoden isn't taking this seriously enough, while Theoden is worried about his people's morale: "their courage hangs by a thread," etc.). The enemy will come to them, in a place where Theoden and the Rohirrim have a massive advantage, and actually stand a (small) chance against an army that outnumbers them something like 15 to 1. As a side note, in the books, the retreat to Helm's Deep is *not* controversial. Gandalf actively encourages it.
Exactly. One of many places where the movies screw with the story for a bit of extra drama. It's not surprising that reactors seeing this for the first time might be swayed by this to think badly of Theoden.
@@freakyalien5449Too much talking about what the characters should do or should be doing, along with lots of puzzling confusion which I’m guessing cuz they were yapping during dialogue moments. Not trying to hate on them though cuz they’re both charming and funny, I loved their first reaction and it does seem like they really liked this movie. I just don’t like it when reactors talk at the screen as if the characters can hear them instead of trying to understand. Everyone in the comments last time were begging them to do the extended but they didn’t. Doubting they read any comments for further understanding, if anyone does it’s redshirt guy. It’s a shame cuz I don’t think reactors realize that it’s pretty much LOTR that’ll get the most views.
So I get to be THAT GUY! When Aragorn kicks the helmet and screams, Viggo Mortenson, actually broke his toe. That was a genuine scream of pain that he managed to keep in character.
Theoden is one of my favorite characters. He was under a spell for a long time. When he came out of it his entire world was destroyed, son was dead, kingdom in ruin. He largely sees himself as a failure of a king and is desperate to do what he can to save what little he has left. He’s just a broken man who needs to find his faith and confidence again which he does by the end of this movie.
The gray cloak that looked like a rock when covering Frodo and Sam was Elvish tech. It was said earlier and Sam says so almost immediately after the soldiers go away.
They made a mistake removing the gift giving scene from the elves in the first movie which explains the magic powers of all of the items that they’d be using for the rest of the trilogy. I assume they did it to increase tension since you wouldn’t know about their powers like how the elf cloaks change appearance for hiding, the abilities of the elven ropes and the way their elven bread works, but I can see why it would be confusing for first time viewers
You guys are freaking nuts that think they should react as he is great when literally everything they have seen of him is the polar opposite, LOTR fanboys are something else man. @@jus3691 Totally agree, in fact when she was questioning where Gondor was i stopped watching. For every question they had they'ed literally already been given that information in the film as it progressed. Finally became so frustrated with them i couldn't watch anymore.

1:02:30 I think the scene is only in the extended edition, but the horse is actually one that Aragorn finds freaking out in a Rohan stable earlier in the film. Aragorn calms the horse by gently speaking to it in Elvish, then tells the stable hands to let the horse go free because it had seen too much of war. The horse repays this kindness when it finds Aragorn on the banks of the river and carries him to Helm's Deep.
All three films were filmed October 11, 1999 to December 22, 2000. Some extra filming from 2001 to 2003. It was filmed for less than $300 Million for all 3.
Holy shit is that true? I knew it was back to back but that’s an insane feat. I learned PJ was an indie director before so budget and time efficiency would have been his focus already but for the scale of these 3 films, that’s magical
You are correct, but in the slightest of defense to them, gollum does continually talk about how it was taken from him…. So.. i mean if you found a cool rock and dropped it, someone else found it before you could get it back, is that considered stolen from you? Or just finders keepers? I mean bilbo heard someone yelling for it and ran off with it so technically it may not be stealing because it never truly belonged to gollum but bilbo found something shiny, took it, and ran from the person claiming it…. I mean…He kinda stole it😅😂 but I mostly do agree with you haha
Fun fact: Christopher Lee, who played Saraman, read the Lord of the Rings every year since it was published in 1955. He also was the only actor, from the films, to have met Tolkien.
The horse that finds Aragorn by the river is a different horse than the one he was riding before. That one was called Hasufel, this one is Brego. Brego has a slightly larger role in the Extended Edition.
You REALLY should've watched the extended editions Theres the crucial Boromir/Faramir scene The scene where Aragorn speaks about his age The scene where Aragorn calms the horse Brego by speaking Elvish, then sets him free. Brego is then the one who finds him after his fall
@@desmasic by people you mean diehard fans? The theatrical cuts are commonly agreed to be better films. Pacing is better and it makes for much more emotionally engaging watches, especially on first viewings. Even Jackson has said that the theatrical cuts ARE the director's cut; that he thinks the theatrical are a better viewing experience and better movies, but that the extended are a nugget for fans. The extended cuts ruin a lot of moments and punches that the theatrical initially give you. For example, it ruins Aragorn's arrival with the ghost army in ROTK, as the extended shows you they agree to come while the theatrical leaves you thinking they refused.
I hope you take a second look at King Theoden. He did say something to the masses before the battle right around the 1:10:34 scene where he was hyping them up about no army has ever breached their walls. Before that, he himself was also checking the defenses. It was the scene where he told Gimli that he's fought many wars and he knows how to defend his own keep. At the midpoint of the movie, he even led the charge against the warg riders. He was front and center of the charge, not Aragorn. Was he incredibly flawed in this movie? Absolutely, but definitely far from the worst King in movie history.
I think this is the wrong take on Theoden. He's a leader that WANTS to ride into his enemies at the head of his army, but is forced into a position where he has little to no control over anything because he was possessed by someone he thought was an ally and has to rely on nothing but hope. Retreating to Helms Deep is a good strategy, I don't know why it's portrayed as bad in the movies. because of Sauruman and Grimma he has not rallied his armies, and the one force he had has been banished multiple days away. He even says that if this is the end he wants his people to make such an end as to be worth of remembering! Also, people are telling him to send for Eomer and send out riders, etc., that's all fine and good, but he KNOWS that they won't make it in time and that HE has to make decisions as if no help is coming, which he does. He IS a leader, but one who has had all of his power taken from him. Yet even still he commands, only showing his doubts and laments to his closest advisors and while speaking loudly to everyone They will break upon these walls like water on rock! The movie doesn't make it obvious enough for some people I guess, but Theoden IS a good leader... just one in a horrible predicament. His job in this conflict was to bear the burden of leadership, and Aragorns job was to rally the men. Aragorn had much of the same mentality as Theoden in the movie concerning this fight. After his words with Legolas and the young man Haleth, Aragorn was able to assume the role of Hope, which is his name ("Estel" in Sindarin). This is why having "heroes" and "captains" at a battle is important; it's not just for their martial prowess, it's for the moral boost they bring and the shared burden of leadership. Not everyone can be everything all the time.
Guys, I must say that.. There are almost hundred millions people that watched these trilogy and read the books but first time I just see the people who doesn't like King Theoden..First time of my life :)) İnteresting :D
And even in the state of mind he must have been in after the brainwashing he STILL made the right decision, go to Helm’s Deep. If they’d stayed where they were and fought they would have been slaughtered like nothin’.
@@thatoneguy-tj5pcOpinions are fine as long as they are based on something valid. These two reactors get characters mixed up, the plot mixed up, talk so much they miss 50% of what is being said in the movie, constantly come to the wrong conclusions due to their own misinformed assumptions about what is happening, also, they deliberately choose not to watch the extended versions of the films which could give them so many answers to questions they now have (if they would listen, that is). They miss out of dialogue in elvish because they don’t watch with subtitles. I could go on. But the point here is: If you want people to take your reaction seriously then perhaps show some respect for the viewers by taking the film in question seriously too. LOTR deserve longer attention spans than your average action movie. This reaction is giving me a headache.
They are reacting to the film with no prior knowledge. The fact is, that this is the way Theoden is portrayed in this cut: as a weak, indesicive leader. This is the way people, including myself, saw the film when it was shown in theatres. I had read the books beforehand, but I don't see a problem with portaying him this way. It creates another level of conflict in the film, wich makes it more interesting than just having a straight good vs evil dynamic. It also makes the conclusion of Theoden's arc so much greater in the next film.
I love you girls together and these are my favourite movies. Have to say the love for Aragorn is pretty much universal.
Theoden my friend, not Theodon. They keep saying his name wrong. 😅
Yeah. Also, the fact that the story has been following literally the greatest warriors on the continent may have created unrealistic expectations.
The movies swap Aragorn and Theoden roles in the two towers. In the books Theoden was the one who inspired Aragorn.
I remember watching this with my housemate. When he came out of the spell she said "All of you saw me like this and nobody said shyt, huh!!" That scene cracks me up every time now.

Y'all bagging on him constantly is breaking my heart a little.
They did? Ion wanna watch anymore then
The movie really is to blame though that is no excuse to audiences being sheep that will uncritically accept characters they like doing the wrong thing as the right thing, I can't see why Peter Jackson and the writers decided to make it out as if Theoden is doing anything other than the smartest possible thing.

The reason the 2 soldiers couldn't see Sam and Frodo is because the fellowship got gifts from Galadriel. The elven cloaks are woven by herself and her maides, acting as camouflage for "unfriendly" eyes
Extended edition should be the default watches... theatrical cut is a mess
@@Milleniumlance It is not a mess which is an extreme thing to say. The extended edition has unnecessary scenes that hurt the pacing including the awful moment of Eowyn singing.
@@DanV900 I understand the reason for pacing, but if your missing entire narratives and leave audience confused. Especially at the beginning of ROTK

There’s a whole book on the process of creating Gollum for the screen, worth picking up if that kind of thing is your jam.
Brings tears that thay think bad of him
But if Aragorn did not spare Grima, Saruman's army would go into Rohan and siege their capital city. Where everyone would have died for sure. Going to Helms Deep actually saved lives.

Alright Theodin is literally the best king we see acting as king. He was fucked over by Grima and Sauron having been freed from essentially a waking sleep he realized his kingdom is under siege and he's at war. Rohan names have lots of “Eo” in them (Theoden, Eomer, Eowyn, Eothain). Tolkien studied languages, particularly old Northern European languages. “Eo” is “horse” in Old English, derived from the Anglo-Saxon.
As my dad put it, Gandalf became what Saruman could have/should have been.
I love that detail, I ***need*** to read the books. 😂🙈
I love that in the films Gandalf is pure white, showing what Saruman should be.
Saruman's clothes are darkening, becoming muddied and dirty in comparison showing his downfall.
Gandalf embraced his role and Saruman disrespected his.
"He that breaks a thing to find out what it is, has left the path of wisdom"
@@LarissaFay yes, while I prefer the book version of Saruman's downfall, Jackson, Fran and Phillippa made the right choice. It would be very difficult to convey the prism on screen.
There's a very important scene in the extended version of this movie with Boromir and Faramir's father. It greatly helps explains both the brother's motivations in this trilogy and especially towards the ring. It also helps explain the father son relationship which is important for the next movie. That being said, I'm super glad you are watching these movies at all.

Theodon is the “regular” dude/leader who knows he isn’t a hero of his age, won’t be able to live up to his ancestors prior deeds, knows things are drastically dire, but still chooses the right thing, still fights and still leads.
That's why I adore King Théoden.
His words are powerful. 💖
Its Theoden not Theodon

You'd have to have read the books. Yeah, these movies didn't adequately show Denethor or Theoden's better sides when they were uncorrupted.
@ronweber1402 exactly, it's such a great nod to the lore. I love details like that
King Theoden is an often underestimated character.
Theoden greatly respected Aragorn and even in the books
The constant attempts to predict what’s going to happen. As opposed to paying attention to the plot. Is driving me to the brink of madness.
I think it depends on your knowledge of warfare tactics.

Hell this whole trilogy is just one long magical "once in a lifetime" theater experience for us who were lucky enough to see it first hand.

They referred to is an elfin cloak. I don't think they have subtitles on and are missing key dialogue.
Then Roxy is all skeptical and like, "I have questions." Meanwhile, I'm sitting there thinking, "You wouldn't have questions if you actually listened to the dialogue instead of trying to guess."
Good movies don't make the audience work that hard to come up with theories about what's going on.

And the explanation that he's actually 87 and just ages a lot more slowly than most humans.
more sad is they dont get to see boromir again =(
Viggo’s look of confusion at what was in the soup was just priceless
May your comment inspire them to watch the extended editions!
@@genny5309 hope so, but dont think so^^
Theoden is one of my favorite characters.
I wish they’d left that in FOTR and Faramir’s flashback to Boromir in this movie. Both scenes provide so much context.
There's a reason why most never watch LOTR without "extended" in front.
Not sure why they're reacting to the theatrical version nobody recommends.
I've never seen somebody hate a character as impressive and admirable as Theoden...
You guys are freaking nuts that think they should react as he is great when literally everything they have seen of him is the polar opposite, LOTR fanboys are something else man. This is a FIRST TIME REACTION. Not a "we've seen all movies before so we know what happends in the other movies so we know to like this character"
@CookiesCatbug ok, calm down.
@@CookiesCatbugYeah the other comments need to chill a bit! You can say that he’s a great character but pump it a bit on the righteousness! 😅 I got a little irritated here and there but I remind myself that I’ve seen it a million times and have read the books!
1:10:05 So, you are telling me that... we DIDN'T get to see Roxy's reaction to "slo-mo Aragorn opening those huge doors"???? I feel very attacked 🤣 I remember saving a gif (that I saw in tumblr!) from that scene 😅
But they did give us a Blanche/golden girls edit 😂😂😂❤👍
@@sleekpiano 😂
King Theoden forever ❤
I did not realize how much his character means to me until i listened to you guys trash him the whole time lol so thanks for the realization. ❤
lol what a Goat!
"We are in the horse masters land" Showing horse masters in armor. Showing the army being banished. A horse army attacking the orcs: "Gotta be the elves..."
Yeah, not exactly the brightest bulbs in the pack. They just weren't paying attention at all.
And just to put icing on the Cake .... when the Elves arrived at Helms Deep - they thought that was Eomer! Yes - these two have good Spirit and are Adorable - but their attention span re Plot and Characters was Epically Bad.
It’s bc they’re not super nerds cut them some slack… they don’t live and breath lotr or fantasy so they don’t know what we nerds know to look for
@@heesoo18 i cut them lots of slack for that exact reason, but that one is right there, on the screen
@@heesoo18It’s not about them being “super nerds” it’s about just paying attention, something that they consistently showed throughout this movie that they could barely do.
Dude we want a reaction, not a narration. Homegirl on the left is driving me bonkers lol
“PO-TAY-TOS boil em! Mash em! Stick em in a stew!”
I both love and hate this became a meme.
They skipped it.
I feel like a lot of their questions could have been answered if they watched the extended version.
Yep.
Or honestly if they just payed attention to the movie and stopped trying to guess or criticise everything. I love the girls, but as a huge fan of LOTR this was almost unwatchable for me :(
@@jus3691 Totally agree, in fact when she was questioning where Gondor was i stopped watching. For every question they had they'ed literally already been given that information in the film as it progressed. Finally became so frustrated with them i couldn't watch anymore.
A lot of there questions they had the answers to, if they had just paid attention to the film.
OR they would have had even more answers with more content to consume. Adding more scenes and more time doesn't necessarily mean they'll understand more, but could even mean they'll get even more confused with more to try and remember and understand.
$300 million and made more than$3 billion.. and more than 10 Oscars.. I'd say that was extremely successful.. 🔥
Bilbo did not steal the ring...he found it after Gollum lost it.
Thank you. I was scratching my head at that one... they did watch the first movie right?
You are correct, but in the slightest of defense to them, gollum does continually talk about how it was taken from him…. So.. i mean if you found a cool rock and dropped it, someone else found it before you could get it back, is that considered stolen from you? Or just finders keepers? I mean bilbo heard someone yelling for it and ran off with it so technically it may not be stealing because it never truly belonged to gollum but bilbo found something shiny, took it, and ran from the person claiming it…. I mean…He kinda stole it😅😂 but I mostly do agree with you haha
but he IS a burglar! 😉
Yes, but Gollum lost it on his house. 😅
Legolas has been putting dents in every enemy they’ve crossed so far with his arrows.
Na he has done literally nothing before skateboarding down the stairs rapid firing arrows according to the reactors 😂😂
@@Thundernoob98 GOD that pissed me off. "when is legolas going to actually do something" BITCH do you not remember the cave troll?
You REALLY should've watched the extended editions
Theres the crucial Boromir/Faramir scene
The scene where Aragorn speaks about his age
The scene where Aragorn calms the horse Brego by speaking Elvish, then sets him free. Brego is then the one who finds him after his fall
They already gave some excuses to why they are not reacting to the extended which is not a good excuse imo
It doesn't make any sense, watching regular theatrical edition in 2024.
People have agreed that LOTR is best enjoyed extended, since forever.
The extended editions in this trilogy to be honest, are way too good to ever skip.
I hope they do an extended edition watch along. It’s probably on as newbies to watch the theatricals.
There are almost hundred millions people that watched these trilogy and read the books but first time I just see the people who doesn't like King Theoden..First time of my life :)) İnteresting :D
lol i feel ya.
Not gonna lie, the Theoden slander ruined the reaction for me a little bit. They shit on him more than the actual villains!
And even in the state of mind he must have been in after the brainwashing he STILL made the right decision, go to Helm’s Deep. If they’d stayed where they were and fought they would have been slaughtered like nothin’.
oh boo hoo how dare they have an opinion.
@@freakyalien5449 and yet you are watching this channel.
Jesus Christ... I tried, I really did.😂
Omg y'all don't pay attention....Gandalf was at Helms deep...Sauroman was at Isengard

I love you girls together and these are my favourite movies. Have to say the love for Aragorn is pretty much universal. But tbh Roxy was kinda getting on my nerves being so harsh with everyone that isn't Aragorn. These are deep characters with deep feelings and stories. The confusion with the names and places is pretty common for a first time watch. But all the criticism was driving me crazy 😅
Yeah I don't think they realize how much these books and movies mean to people, just looking at these comments is very telling. I don't see a single positive comment lol, and I agree with almost every one of them. Still love these girls, but damn...
The cloak blends in with whatever environment that surrounds them. Most reactors usually figure that out quickly. You two should watch the extended version of the third movie Return of the King.
Faramir had the dream of Isildur's Bane, and the hour of the halfling. He was called to the quest, but Boromir and their father chose to send Boromir.
