What an unusual viewpoint - that is mostly valid - without unexpected levels of technological advancement, some developed countries are likely toast in the next few decades.

    • @nuz5

The Singularity is tied to advanced technological advancement, but there's a main thing one needs to understand about it. Technological advancements bring risks, and the scenarios Thiel outlined wouldn't even be on the map without certain technology advancements. The Singularity gives humanity the processing power to figure out how to optimize the status quo in favor of reducing those risks to just about zero. As we approach the Singularity, the risks and volatility from these accelerating rate of technology advances, will continue to increase. Things will get worse before they get better. That is why we need to support the Singularity efforts.

    • @javiertrevino5535

@@nuz5 The singularity is more of a philosophical concept for now, AI today is just a more sophisticated version of the idea of software and the so-called singularity is very far away as the most advanced AI today is very dumb when compared to the stuff you see in sci fi movies. The misconception is that somehow the Singularity is unavoidable and will unfold itself if we "accept it" but this view is flawed because of how simple AI is today, it is only a piece of software that "learns" from huge groups of data... instead of expecting some sort of dystopian fantasy of The Singularity Peter says in the book that the best companies will come from creating just better software by mixing AI and human efforts, it's much more humble and realistic, which uncharacteristic of him but I think he's right.

Great talk. This is the biggest risk I think. Look at books like "The Crash Course: The Unsustainable Future Of Our Economy, Energy, And Environment"
by Chris Martenson. If we don't make these breakthroughs soon, we never will and will regress back to the middle ages permanently.

    • @wavegeekman
      @wavegeekman 10 років тому +2

Grandfather_Din_Racket It might help to read Martenson's book, or watch his free videos. In summary: our society is based on cheap energy and other raw materials, what are about to go away. Without these, our society will collapse. Another industrial revolution cannot happen because the material requisites no longer exist.
To repeat, for all our supposed cleverness, our society is organized around the exploitation of cheap energy, which is about to go away. And don't talk nonsense about "solar",
      It's not about politics.
"One of the penalties for refusing to participate in politics is that you end up being governed by your inferiors."
Funny I just read that part Plato (in "Politics").

Technologies that generates narratives for people to work together. Fine ! Work together and have no speculative bubble ...That must be a JOKE ! "An economic bubble or asset bubble (sometimes also referred to as a speculative bubble, a market bubble, a price bubble, a financial bubble, a speculative mania, or a balloon) is trade in an asset at a price or price range that strongly exceeds the asset's intrinsic value." Complexity is = with bubble formation capacity....

Very rich and very poor at the same time. Any man could be comparatively very rich, and only in some aspects. But only the truly good man, who would consciouly admits to himself that he knows, that he is very rich, yet at the same time, very poor in other aspects. --- These men are the most worthy to be my long term teacher, friend, and comrade.
Please Mr. Peter Thiel, let me have a short moment of your precious time, I have the solution to your quest for the world. Thank you for your attention. al

Why are people not worry about technology not happening ?
Maybe, just maybe, because even today they are overwhelmed by technology...
Most people cant even stay up to date in a few fields, or trade, or profession...
Increasing complexity is the only reason why academic prizes awarded, and almost never for systemic simplification ...

These guys should be more clear with their libertarian views... I've heard a lot of similar views from other speakers on this channel but they're as vague as Peter is here. Maybe they haven't embraced the moral side of liberty and if not, they should. There isn't any difference between a theoretical case and a practical case, to use the government to force innocent people into doing stuff they don't want is always wrong...
