See Trevor Mohr's comment below for easier way, but here are what Tim had us do... Steps: 1.Open a newer file version in offline mode, 2. save as an .L5K file. 3. Open file in a notepad or notepad ++ type editor, and 4. then change in the file; IE_VER= 2.2x to a lower x number, i.e 2.24 to 2.23 in Tim's case (from version 33 to 32), then 5. two places that MAJOR is located from 33 to 32 or similar... 6. Save file. 7. Open the L5K file in Studio 5000, and 8. import into A/B software to open and 9. check the newer version of the controller in the open file now before 10. downloading into any PLC. This process will ask you to 11. place correct version of firmware into the PLC, so accept it and 12. Do not fiddle, or move any cabling or disconnect power from PLC or laptop during the process, so that you don't "Brick the PLC". 13. Don't forget to place PLC back into run mode. Now you should be running an "older" version of the same file in the processor with the PLC firmware backtracked... maybe for compatibility of someone else who doesn't have the latest software version, nor really cares to go with the latest version in their plant. Some technicians are limited by their IT administrators and makes their life difficult, so us PLC gurus may have to contain our joy to get their systems to the latest and supposedly greatest version. May not be best for them short term... Eventually they should migrate to newer or get left behind. see twcontrols.com/controllogix-compactlogix-studio-5000-lessons for full details...
It can if they are using the SD card to store the program. Here is a video I just uploaded about it. It isn't released yet so don't share it. ua-cam.com/video/H8LmfitxpIU/v-deo.html
I used this method and Studio 5000 refuses to import the program to the ACD with new firmware. Any Idea why that could be? Keeps saying that the request timed out.
Thanks very much for your videos, they are very helpful, Please I have the issue but in another way, I have studio 5000 v33.03 , and I have a machine which is controlled by plc L33ERM , when I connected the usb cable to upload the project from the plc, the software shows me a message that the plc was programmed with version 32 ( please install Logix Designer v32.00 to upload from this controller) How to solve this issue? Regards
Thanks for free education. I have tow questions: 1. Is it possible to install all available firmware versions? Because it is possible that every machine that is referred may be a different version and the program connot be uploaded. 2. If PLC firmware is upgraded or downgraded, will the program in it be lost? How about data? Thank in advance
Newer versions can be installed concurrently but older ones could not. Besides that, it is all about hard disk space. Always have your data backed up before doing an upgrade. There are lots of opportunities for failures.
I am getting line (random line in the code) delimiter error, when I am importing the new l5k file. However i have no errors in my controller. Any ideas ?
@@TimWilborne Hi Tim, Thanks for your response, sorry yes I was following your tutorial to downgrade from v33 to v32 in my project. I was following the video exactly but my project would not import studio 5000 was giving a ''delimiter error'' after some trial and error it was down to me creating the l5k file with trends in my project, when I deleted the trends and saved as L5K your method worked fine. Running Studio 5000 v31 and have a program that was designed in v33. How do I downgrade the v33 program in order to open it on my studio 5000 v31 software? Please help!
You will need to install version 24 which can be installed along with version 30. Also, if you only need to view it, you can open it with version 30 and it will give you the option to change the version.
On another note, would this also work for RSLogix 500 ? I came across a problem the other day with a program for a lift station. I could not open the program because of an error I got when trying to go online with the PLC. It said something to the extent of a version issue. All 3 of our licenses for RSLogix 500 is 9.00.00. I'm guessing this one particular lift station program used a slightly higher software version. I really do not know. I just can't seem to open the program.
Hey Tim there is an easier way to do this if you haven’t found it yet. Save your .L5K just like you did and open it back up without editing the text and in the bottom corner of the import window it will give you all your revisions available. I would make a video but I don’t have the on camera personality like you do! Keep up the great work!
You have peaked my interest. I thought you were only able to select a newer firmware with that box but that would be an exciting find. Let me check it out.
No. You can only upgrade the firmware using Trevor's method, not downgrade. But if you try, you will get the magic number you need to edit in the LK5 file using the method I show in this video.
HI Tim, could I download a project created in version 30 to a controller that is version 34 or 35? couldn't find a lower version controller in the market. thanks
Hello Tim, I follow you from Argentina. Do you know if it is possible to downgrade from version 32 to 31 in Allen Bradley L82es processors? . I want to update one but being sure that I can go back. Thank you!
Right click the module in the I/O configuration, select properties, and go to the connection tab. What error does it show? My wild guess is electronic keying mismatch.
@@TimWilborne Not true. I just found out the hard way. The corporate IT guy, whom is in charge of our AB licensing, said it was. I attempted to connect with a PAC with 33 and the laptop had 34. No bueno. So it is most definitely not backwards compatible.
My socks are blown off. Thank you! This is brilliant!
You are welcome
Thanks a lot, Tim! Another great video which is very helpful! 👍

Running studio 5000 v32
But controller firmware version 30.011
What us IE_VER ? Kindly support.
Can an Allen Bradly PLC revert back to a previous fitmware after a power failure etc. or is it impossible without human intervention?
It can if they are using the SD card to store the program. Here is a video I just uploaded about it. It isn't released yet so don't share it.

My first guess is one of your IO modules firmware is too high for the older processor. It can be tricky.

You need to download and install version 32. They are not backwards compatible and you can have multiple versions installed
If I have a license for 24.00.00, but there's 1 CompactLogix at my plant that uses, say 32.00.00. How do I know the IE_Ver ?
It is in technote QA1568, you'll need a Techconnect contract to view it.
Thanks for the videos, Tim. Is there a document that shows which IE_VER is required for a certain downgrade?
Hi Ali, Yes Rockwell support answer ID QA1568 contains that information. It does require a tech connect contract to view.
the solution is here:
ua-cam.com/video/zJm4HU6r5kw/v-deo.html
Hey TW Controls, we entered IOE_VER 2.23 which was 2.24 before. but how we know what it should be, any source ?
You need to look at Rockwell Support document ID QA1568. It requires Techconnect level access.

Same as this video shows. Version 31 would be 2.22.

Are you using the free software? It only works with the Micrologix 1000 and 1100.
@@TimWilborne No, I'm using a licensed version of RSLogix 500.
Then I'd say your suspicion is correct and the Micrologix firmware is newer.

Yes, be sure to read the technote first.
ive got a problem caused by allen bradley. 753 powerflex with an add-on ethernet ip module wont port correctly on version 31-33.

Just checked, QA1568 is still there, you must have a Techconnect contract to view it.

Doesn't work with an "emulate" controller type
Emulate does not work the same as a real PLC.
