  • Ok lets put it to the test. Here I get it set up, install filter media, char base and fuel the thing up. Then I get the genny up and running and run some mild load test here on camera. We then let it just run with a mild load from our battery charging system for roughly 1 hour and then shut down. I then let the generator cool will it restart?? I guess you need to watch the video :)
    Unfortunatly there was not enough market support for this product so it has been discontinued. However, the good news is you dont need this kit. I still show you in detail how to build this, you can just as easily source all these parts or create your own version. Dont over complicate this. Use your best justment sizing the unit to what I show here. You dont need the HF tanks just find some tanks and flanges that fit them. You do not need to be exact. Go to our forum start a build and thread and my along with other members will aid you. Dont go and buy books, you dont need that either. You need to forum with active and willing participants that have experience and we will share this with you. Build the unit get it working and then you can tune the machine to your specific application.

    When I was trying to start this. I pre ran the generator to run it out of gas via closing the fuel supply valve. What I didnt realize is the tank was empty already. It had just enough gas to run for a few minutes. The plan was to get the gasifier going with the float bowl empty. Then once the gasifier was up and running the plan was to open the gas supply valve to fill the float bowl and back off to get it running on gasoline first. Then meter in the wood gas and transition over. Well it was out of gas in the tank so I fiddled around trying to get it running on gasoline. Once I figured that out it actaully fired up pretty quick on just pure wood gas. Oh and yeah then I had left the choke closed then once I figuired that out and closed it; it took off.

    It looked like you had to wait around 5-6 minutes before opening hopper, when it comes time to refill, is that typically how long you have to wait after shutdown before reloading?

      @Thrive-Off-Grid  Рік тому +1

      You can open the lid any time even while the engine is running. I was just trying to get to where we could see inside the hopper with the camera.

      @@Thrive-Off-Grid excellent! So I wouldn't have to shut off the generator to refill. That was my concern. My other concern with opening before it was shut down was a backflash (I can't remember the technical term) or a reduction in proper vacuum for the ignition chamber

      @@dleff4923 Yeah never look directly over an open when running or just after shut down. The gas inside the hopper can ignite. Its not a big deal just keep your face away. You can refuel on the fly but you generally need to be quick as anytime you open the hopper you are blasting air into the combustion chamber and this will change the gas flow and energy density. You mixer is static so it cant compensite for a new air mix.
      Why cant you stop the unit to re fuel??
      You are planning to charge a battery bank right?? This wont be practical without a battery bank. Its way more efficient to store the power and use an inverter to manage that power. Otherwise you are just wasting fuel letting a generatoir run and idle to carry small loads.

      @@Thrive-Off-Grid thank you for clearing that up. Charging my battery system is exactly my intention for looking to invest into one of your systems. Matt, now that you have experience building, running and maintaining wood, charcoal, and these hybrid systems, would you say there is enough of a benefit to running wood/charcoal mix over just running charcoal with a water drip to make it worth someone's time and effort to build the more complex gasifier to run wood/charcoal mix? Sorry, that was a bit of a run on sentence.

    • @Thrive-Off-Grid
      @Thrive-Off-Grid  Рік тому

      So far I would say yes! This gasifier isnt really all that complex. The reactor is pretty simple as Im not building the donut type air jacket. Just a couple of valves instead and then the primary is an open jet.
      Yeah the 50/50 so far has worked best. It made clean gas, ran stable like charcoal and produced good power. The wood run I did today, made dirtier gas and ran inconsistant. The charcoal ran today, it ran stable but with less power.
      We are going to build a production version of this gasifier. It will be the SHTF gasifier system LOL. I will be a kit and the reactor portion will ship inside the hopper. So it will all be self contained for shipping or storage. Yeah this thing is forcing me to really re think things as this unit can do both and do so quite well.

      @@Thrive-Off-Grid Yeah, I saw that you posted the new raw wood chip video right after I made the last comment. I do like the fuel flexibility of this unit over just a regular charcoal gasifier. When you process your wood chips, are you using a standard store bought wood chipper or did you build something that makes the correct sized wood chips? I have looked into getting a store bought wood chipper but I have been worried that I would have to modify it to get the correct sized wood chips.

    • @Thrive-Off-Grid

      @@BryanWhite77 Nope I dont have a chipper other than the Harbor Frieght one I have. However the chips Im using I buy from the company behind our shop here. They just dump a front end loader bucket over the mound for us. LOL. If I had to produce my wood fuel I would just build a chunker. We may go down that road and produce a manufactured one in the future.

      @@Thrive-Off-Grid That's a nice arrangement for wood chips. We have a couple companies around me that will do chip drops, however, I would hate to get a truckload of wood chips dumped on my driveway only to find out the wood chips are too small or too big for my application. Maybe I can get some samples first.

    That seemed to work really well with a mix of charcoal and dry chips. A 2 he run with such a large gen is pretty good. I was expecting to see it close to empty. Do you have plans to try it on straight chips? Maybe use charcoal just to get it started.

    • @Thrive-Off-Grid
      @Thrive-Off-Grid  Рік тому +1

      This was just a test, it should run on 100% chips no issues. I will be running today on a 100% chips and then I will start testing in charcoal mode.

    • @Thrive-Off-Grid
      @Thrive-Off-Grid  Рік тому +1

      Yeah I was not expecting more than 1 hour to an 1 and half run time. I think its because the insulation I used and that my fuel was very dry. The insulation is really the key component to this units success. Plus using dry fuel, I wont push the BS of 15 to 25% MC. That is crap and no one should be making that claim from any manufacturer. Dry your fuel as complete as posible bellow 10% MC. This is why Im going the rought of this duel fuel system. As drying wood is not all that easy and when you need to run to you need to run. So making charcoal can be done much faster than drying wood fuel. We plan to build a screen tumbler dryer this year out of a 55 gal drum. The mid section will be cut out and replaced with expanded metal then it will roll on a rotisary with a motor that will run on a timer.

    • @M35a2guy
      @M35a2guy Рік тому

      @@Thrive-Off-Grid look forward to seeing that. I do like the wood chip idea. Drying is the key. I agree getting the moisture out it top priority. I would say use the same process as making charcoal but stop short of converting the biomass to carbon. Cook it just enough to boil off the water but don’t convert it. That way it gets really dry and has more energy density then just charcoal. So it in drums with covers.

    • @Thrive-Off-Grid
      @Thrive-Off-Grid  Рік тому +1

      @@M35a2guy Yeah we need to incorporate chip drying into the charcoaling process. Use waste heat from making charcoal to heat a chip drying kiln. Then you have both fuels with out waste. But can air dry fuel as long as you dont have crazy high humidity. Then you have cold climates too. Kinda hard to dry frozen fuel :)
      what I do with our charcoal kiln is I add chips into the process. If I get the timing down they torrify instead of fully converting to charcoal.

    Why doesn't this need a radiator for cooling the gas? And what is the purpose of the water injection?

    • @Thrive-Off-Grid
      @Thrive-Off-Grid  Рік тому +3

      What do you think that filter is doing? Those barrel drum are very effective at cooling the gas. This is like AC when you expand the gas it will cool. The plan is to add more filter drums. When complete this will have three drums plenty enough to cool to gas.

    • @Thrive-Off-Grid
      @Thrive-Off-Grid  Рік тому +3

      This also means the reduction process is very efficient. The reduction process is exothermic meaning it absorbs heat in process. The higher your differential from the oxidation temps to grate exit temperature the more efficient and complete the reduction process is.

    • @Thrive-Off-Grid
      @Thrive-Off-Grid  Рік тому +3

      The water injection is for running in charcoal mode. When in charcoal mode this cools the primary jet and creates water gas. Basically its thermally cracking the water. In charcoal mode it will run more efficient and produce much higher energy dense gas as the steam water injection reduces the nitrogen while boosting the H2 content.
