Comorbidities in Epilepsy Focus on Mood and Behavior

  • Many people do not know how to screen for comorbidities in children or adults with epilepsy. Additionally, treatment of comorbidities may be complicated by delays in diagnosis and impact of the comorbidity on seizures or treatment approaches. Patient referrals to mental health resources and other experts are lacking or sporadic, and knowledge gaps exist among most health care professionals about when to refer. Since nurses may encounter people with seizures in any setting, providing up-to-date information on diagnosis, treatment and self-management care may help improve access to epilepsy care.

I was admitted to the ED after arriving at the hospital in an ambulance. I hadn't slept in 3 days and was having repeated seizures. When I arrived at the hospital I was aggravated and combative. The doctor on staff was made aware that I have epilepsy, but had no understanding of my symptoms and threatened to discharge me right out into the street. Later, when my wife intervened on my behalf, she scolded him for his lack of empathy and understanding of the comordidities that my condition might have on my behavior. What a horrible experience, and shame on that doctor!
