I decided to do that "mom thing"... I just remembered that Sam's very first boat was a rugged brown vinyl inflatable 🚣♂️ I think he was 6 or 7. He used his own 5 dollars 💵. Zimmet's yard sale.
Whoa!!Are you Sam's mom?? You have a wonderful son.
@@sensei-lr4cj awwwww... you're cute. Yes, I'm Sam's (and Paul's and Sophie's) mom. I think my kids are pretty amazing, even if some of the stuff they do scares me, and it is really fun to see that other people do to 🙂
@@mammaholmes Thank for you raising such fine people Ann, you must be so proud reading some of the comments here about Sam’s attitude and outlook.
Oh, yes, Reuben. And it was ALWAYS all 'positive and smiles' the whole time they were growing up too😉
@@mammaholmes Hi Sam's mum, just found your lads channel, anyways just thought I'd say HOWDY 👍and all the best from England 🇬🇧
I like how he doesnt edit out to show only good things, example showing the sea sickness. He shows all aspects all part of the journey.
I went to the Everglades once and asked where the hiking trails were. The ranger said, "Did you bring a boat?". Noted for next time.
😆
Zoe is a welcome addition to the channel!
Only time I tow my dingy is if I'm just changing location within an anchorage. NEVER under sail. It's just asking for trouble.
Sam Holmes
The man with a mild soft voice,
made of leather and gut,
a will and soul of iron and steel,
And a boat made of fibers and glass.
He only knows, can do.
He tends the tiller,
day and night
Guiding his small boat’s flight.
From the Pacific to the Atlantic
Sam the Sailer
is on the water
The ocean is his home.
On this episode, Sam sails with a Disney Princess, tests Yeti’s new product line, & hunts for treasure island. Hah J/K. Another fun episode, thanks for sharing 🤙
Get featured on #Yeti yt channel, cool channel for a company👍
G'day. is an Australian greeting i say it to everyone so you know that i am from the state of Queensland in Australia. I just watched a couple of your videos and i like to tell you a litte about me. My first boat was a trailer sailer called an jedda 22. I lived on that boat for around five years in moreton bay in the city of Brisbane and the goldcoast. I than whent into catamarans for a while now i am about to buy an 25 ft sailing boat witch will siut me to a tee. At present we are in lockdown like everywere else i have wait for the boarders to open that may be end of next month. then i will go down and pick up the new boat.
and i will be starting a ytube channle so please keep an eye out for it will be entertaining.
Gerard.
@@tronalpha9137 Howdy from England, i say HOWDY to let everyone know I'm from DONCASTER South Yorkshire 😃🙏🇬🇧
Ugh the composting toilet flipped over. Sam your mettle and patience showed threw which is admirable.
Hmmm u didnt see how he reacted off camera 😂
Hey Sam and Zoe, Carry fresh ginger and/or ginger tablets . Works great before or during sea sickness. It works very well.
Absolute legend! The sponshorship from YETI on the bailer. Wildly stronger! Dry bilge longer!
Great video Sam. Zoe seems like pretty good company. Maybe she will get to say hi to everyone some day :p This video made me think that I would see a message at the end that said "And this was the last video footage shot by the occupants of an abandoned boat in the Everglades ... lolz stay safe and keep having fun. Thanks for sharing!
@10:55 I believe your friend is standing on a shell mound. Formed by the Calusa Indians thousands of years ago. They are dotted throughout south Florida and especially well preserved in the Everglades. Some of the oldest archaeological sites in the country!
I look forward to the gator wrestling footage. Changing your channel name to "Pegleg Holmes Sailing" would definitely bump the subscriber count.
I will literally make 10 new accounts just to resubscribe if that happens XD
@@CptAJbanned perhaps we can insure him for loss of life and lim
Many alligator wrestlers are missing digits or even an arm. 🙂 Oh and there’s a reason why you don’t ever hear of crocodile wrestlers. All dead. 😱
New nickname Pegleg Holmes.🙈
Doesn't look that hard though.
Sam, your attitude and patience in good times and times with growing edges are inspiring and admirable. Thank you.
I thought sailing was sunshine and rainbows! 😉
Thanks for showing the less exciting parts of the journey.
Thanks for keeping it real Sam. People with sail-away dreams should all watch this video because this is what it takes!
Also, Zoe is a trooper. I thought after the sea sickness and everything breaking or sinking that she might reach that first island and run away but she didn’t! Good on ya Zoe!
Here here Tom
Just a hint! When you hook a shrimp, bend their back over and go between one plate and another. This will potentially help keep the fish from just biting the head and getting away.
Hi tim dont agree i think it was a littlin i think if a decent fish took it sam would have it in the boat. But he probably could a threaded it on more securely. But the marlin rod and sams winding techniques!. But he is a damm fine sailor, somethin i aint lol
I would consider converting all lighting to low watt LED and upgrading wiring to heavier gauge to use a higher amp rated fuse. . Swinging hammocks really help in rough seas. Although i dont know if you have room for it. Thanks for the great content.
Looked like fun! Glad to see you found a good first mate Sam.
That's a nice storm anchor you're towing, haha! Cheers Sam & First Mate
Yeah but they work better upside down
That's actually the Yeti Stormer, available at fine retailers for $2999. Part of the Yeti Bail and Yeti Line product family.
Love coming on these adventures with you... Virtually. Thanks, Sam
Love It. Glad you found an exploring companion. The dingy is working out great. You’re sorting it all out. Well done.
Gunkholing around the Everglades sounds like paradise to me. Can't wait for part 2!
See you were well stocked on jai alai’s too 😎 cigar city is one hell of a brewery
Heck yeah!
Awesome stuff. When you're exploring in those channels in that shallow water you should find you a good straight branch and use it as a push pole. That's what we do to night fish/frogging
"this looks like a good strong connection point" clips to a twig, HAHAHAHAHA
Funny. How bout that Yeti Bailer, he just wrote Yeti on it. Sam is witty.
Lol lol
My thoughts were about the same. I think he's playing with us
Keep the real life videos coming Sam. Thanks for not editing out the parts with all of the challenges you face... those only make your videos more exciting. 👍🏼
Backed up to this one it’s great to see you with a lovely young women.
Sam, ya need a cheap bilge pump from Walmart $25 . Hook a hose to it... wires and throw it in the small boat. Could run it off a small drill battery. Love the videos.👍
Good idea!
You always have a good attitude and a fun side.
Ahoy Cap'n Sam! Shiver me timbers, this video is a beauty, especially to this landlubber, who lives very far away from the Florida Everglades. Speaking of which, you may enjoy the award-winning novel "Shadow Country" by Peter Mathiessen, a mystery tale of the Everglades. Fair winds!
A National Book Award Winner
Sam, Good to see you have a crew member. I love sailing alone. Prefer it actually. However it's much safer to have someone else aboard. I like your Yeti bilge pump. My boat had two bilge pumps, but I discovered during a huge storm that the best bilge pump was a scared man with a bucket. As far as eating while being seasick; oranges do tase the same coming up as they did going down. eb
Down in the mangroves you may see a saltwater crocs vs a gator. As more freshwater flush through mangroves you may see both gators and crocs. Crocs have narrow nose, and they at times while resting keep theirs open, which believe is regulate their heat.
I am trying to take on your energy of patience in trying moments. This trip looked pretty hectic initially but you seemed to keep a relatively positive vibe through it all. Inspiring.
This one showed true challenges and tribulations, very neat
Sams got a first mate, nice shots from the back of the dinghy. Love your videos Sam, please keep them coming.
Very cool... I did a short kayak trip through the mangroves. Was amazing-This is even better.
The yeti bailer joke had me dying
I hope they make one in Seafoam!
They're expensive but totally cool.
I can't believe he lost his YETI.
The Yeti Bail, at only $89, feature only the best former milk jugs that are turned into bailers by some of the most talented craftsmen on the planet. I just can't understand why you didn't get the optional $49 Yeti Line to tie down the awesome Yeti Bail.
@@JK-allday sounds like marketing hype to me 😂
great video. thank you for showing when doesn't go as planned. thats me most days. but the days it works out, makes it all worth it.
She’s really cute! I drove through there as a trucker and it looked prehistoric I was expecting to see dinosaurs......
Yeah. She is really hot.
For your next Yeti bailer I suggest cutting the bottom out of a jug rather than the top. It will be a lot more effective. Looking forward to the second part. I sailed down from TAmpa to Key Largo in March in my Hobie TI sailing kayak. We came into Whitewater Bay and Joe River via little shark river, which is a very popular anchorage for cruisers. We were racing so we didn’t get to hang out there, but it’s a lovely spot.
And...with the bottom cut out , you will have a very useful large funnel...just don't lose the cap.
Thanks for the tip. Ill get my yeti R&D team right on that.
Brings back memories… Lived in Naples for approximately 4 years in Pelican Bay. The water there’s like taking a bath every day! Now I live out here in this cold ass pacific can even stand to go swimming after being there! Unfortunately almost mandatory wetsuit for any amount of time I sure miss the throw tank on my back and go divin. Thanks for the flashback
Hi Sam and Zoe, If your dinghy fills with water you can take the outboard off and lift it from the front with a halyard or a rope on the boom. Most of the water will be out immediately
and you can pump or yeti the rest. You can run two lines back to the dinghy , one from each side which will give you redundancy. A stronger cover which is raised in the centre of the dinghy will stop it filling up. Keep up the good work and congrats on beautiful Zoe a treasure and very brave! André
man thats so sick! dude there is awesome fishing out there... man that canal that you took to go into the glades was sick, million dollar houses on the water with ocean / everglades access? wow.. i wish i was rich lol.. dude that little boat is nice
Those were some cool spots you found! Like your first mate too!
Going through that swamp is some "Deliverance" shit right there.
Never tow your dinghy I almost died sailing back from key west when dinghy went threw my cockpit in a storm. Learned my lesson
Dang that's terrifying!
I had a terrifying experience with a dinghy in a bar in San Francisco
@@harryfritter8266 lol good one
hairy plopper
There be a lot of them there!
somehow he flies by the seat of his pants and has yet to have a major catastrophe yet. all with a cheesy grin.
Sweet man! It’s also great you found a first mate
Soooooo happy you're back on a boat and making more videos. I really enjoyed your Sweedish Fish sailing adventures. It's so refreshing to see you working with another person on this new boat.....although I would of loved to have you name her "more swedish fish"...I'm shure the moniker "picked herring" will grow on me in time. You have such a kind and positive demeanor....i look forward to watching your future exploits on the "Pickle" God speed and safe sailing.
"... the composting toilet flipped over..." Boy do you know how to impress a girl.
Hopefully Yeti will bless you with a dingy sized cooler for your promotion of their bailer.
Does the cooler double as a dinghy? For the prices they charge it shud 😐
Stoked to see you having fun brother !
Love your videos man! Felt like I was there with you haha.
Best outboard. What a workhorse. I had one for years, sold it for 125 bucks he ran it for 4 years until it fell off his dink and was irretreivable.
Dang dude, what else could have gone wrong? Still, a bad day sailing is better than not! 😂👍
I towed an inflatable dinghy from Annapolis to Florida, then sailing around the Bahamas without incident. Our Caribbean boats all had davits, but if you’re sharp and adjust your panter for the sea state towing a dinghy is fine.
that whole gulf coast side where the 10k islands are and everglades city is so cool... hundreds of miles of un inhabited beaches and islands
I can't decide if your a nutter, fearless or one hell of a laid back seaman, but erither way one of your best videos.
You are an inspiration to all explorers. Have fun.
Sam, it looks like you should trade that dinghy for an inflatable one you can deflate and store so you don't have to tow it.
I like your challenging the gators. They appreciate the entertainment. And I know your gone love the excitemnt.
Never underestimate a gaiter especially in water shallower than thire length.
If your diney that you're towing is a real foam filled Boston Wayler then all you need to do is leave the plug out and it will float at a level and you won't need to pump it all the time , when you are moving it will actually drain itself , try it , you'll like it 👍
Eh, that foam gets water clogged with time. Dont count on it not sinking.
Its not foam filled. Just fiberglass. Ive sunk it twice now. Fortunately it floats just under the surface.
@@samholmessailing too bad , couldn't tell from the picture , still a nice diney👍
We can't wait to go back there. For me though, I prefer wintertime with fewer bugs. Little shark is amazing. Perhaps add floatation tubes tied inside dingy or put on foredeck?
Am I wrong, or is this your worst sailing trip yet? (Followed by some glorious island exploration!) I love that you seemed unencumbered by minor adversities!!! (and your friend seems like a real trooper!!!)
They make these neat little manual kayak bilge pumps btw. Would be good for rained in dingy.
A different kind of trip! Love it!
Sam Holmes, you da man.
You're my fav disney princess ;D
I have new found respect for you after seeing the Jai Alai in the dingy!! Safe travels!!
Wow Sam thought you were going to get list in that maze. Looks like youve got a great first mate in Zoe.
Your almost at 50k subs, keep up the good work.
Great video, thanks for taking us along! 👍🏻
The fishing in there would be incredible!
You need to get that dinghy on deck. Looks like fun in a boat.
absolutely enthralling thank you
Awesome video !What an Adventure fer U2 ! Awesome .
Without the throughput and quality of the Yeti bailer this trip would had been a catastrophe.
thanks bud
Gators live in fresh water. There are some endangered salt water crocs in the glades. Happy hunting.
Salt water crocs in the Everglades? Maybe the American Crocodile, but I don’t think there’s any salties in the glades. The American crocodile ranges from central, Mexico, some of the Caribbean and Florida.
@@brentparks2292 In the Everglades park they tell us there are crocs there. I dont know the exact species. But they make a distinction between crocs and gators. Word is that crocs live in salt water and gators in fresh. But we also have areas of brackish. Who knows what you will find there. It is illegal to kill gators in Florida because of the crocs that are endangered. Gators are not endangered. Thanks for the reply.
Crazy that you visited the Ten Thousand Islands while I was working there with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service! I wonder if I inadvertently saw the Pickled Herring while doing shorebird and sea turtle surveys?!
Sam, another great location everyone should experience. Good job handling all those SNAFU incidents. That drone would have done you good in the 10,000 islands. Looked like fun/a challenge getting through those mangrove channels. Easy to get turned around and "lost". Good to see a woman being able to handle those conditions. There aren't many. You do realize alligators see/hear you coming a mile away and high-tail it out of there. Humans have a long history of treating them like shit and they know it. In the Louisiana bayous I once surprised one and came right up on him/her basking in the sun. Got within about 5 feet and he/she took off like a bolt into the water right in front of our canoe in the direction of our travel, looking back over his/her head as we followed. He/she apparently wasn't into the whole chase thing so did a whole body twist coming half out of the water while doing a 180 and dived under the canoe and was gone. Was pretty cool. Anyway, thanks for taking us along for the ride. Also, can you put the travel date in your posts? Thx.
Thanks for sharing your adventures! Awesome stuff.
That is how you make the best of cascading bad times.
Another great vid! Felt like I was along for the ride. Keepem' coming....:)
Next time dinghy gets full may want to try to lift it with the halyard or boom and drain it. Just a thought.
That's what I was going to suggest. It works. Winches are your friend. You just lift the boat and let the water run out and you're done.
OMG the Yeti bailer had me dead 😂😂😂😂
Keep up the good work Sam. 👍🏼⛵️
Hahahaha! You are nuts! The only reason that I thought you made it out of there is because you (or someone) posted the video!! God! What if your dinghy motor gave out!?!? Wrestling alligators!?!? Everything went wrong!!! This was a bad to worse nail biter!! But she’s a trooper. Glad that you didn’t kill her!! Ha! 😎⛵️
friend of mine used to boat to bimini island and explore the fresh water caves. Crazy fuck!
You're having way too much fun 👍👍👍👍
Thanks for sharing with us, excellent as always
..
Worth a smile.
Great video as always, Keep on living life to the fullest
Santitas are the best!!! Also hope you have a few extra cotter pins would be a long row back
Dang, those Yeti Bailers are expensive!
Nothin yeti is cheap. But some of its made in usa so that may explain it ? 🤔
You might consider using your snorkel mask and looking for fossils (ancient shark teeth etc) while exploring the everglades. Although I have never done it. I don't know if there would be a danger of an alligator attack. Be safe and have fun!
Fun video. Looked like you were going to lose the dingy.
What a maze!
Looks like fun. Passage looked a little hard but there will be better ones :)
Great video as usual. Like you have some company on your adventures.
Composting toilet flipped over, bummer! You might want to look at the Bucket Brigade article in the May/June of Good Old Boat magazine. They indicated they constructed it for $25.
