List of changes and... I am not gonna lie, this one was painful to write:
    Ranger:
    - Level 1: Spellcasting has been moved to 1st level and Weapon Mastery has been added. Spellcasting now allows you to change out one spell on a Long Rest.
    - Also at level 1 Rangers get a new version of Favored Enemy. They get Hunter's Mark prepared for free and you get several free casts of the spell per day.
    - Level 2: Fighting Style returns and Rangers get more Fighting Style options than they had in the 2014 PHB. They also have access to Druidic Warrior which allows them to take Druid Cantrips. NGL, a Ranger fighting with Magic Stone and a Slingshot sounds badass.
    - Also at level 2 you get Deft Explorer which was an alternate Ranger feature I believe from Tasha's. You get Expertise in one skill of your choice and learn two languages of your choice.
    - Level 6 Roving: This was also part of the Ranger changes in Tasha's, though the heavy armor restriction may be new. Your move speed increases by 10ft and you gain a climb and swim speed.
    - At some point, Rangers gain Expertise in two additional skills.
    - Level 10 Tireless: You can grant yourself temp hp a certain number of times per day. I assume this will be either based on your Wisdom modifier or your proficiency bonus. You also now recover 1 level of Exhaustion on a Short Rest. Again, this is still part of the Ranger changes from Tasha's. It is copy and pasted. Also, this feature makes zero sense. Rangers don't want to be taking hits in combat because Hunter's Mark and nearly every other Ranger combat spell uses concentration. Why give an ability that really only benefits taking damage when Rangers are incentivized to fight at range?
    - Level 13: Concentration on your Hunter's Mark spell cannot be broken by taking damage. Yes, because the primary damage spell I want to be casting at 13th level is the same 1st level spell I have been using all game...
    - Level 14 Nature's Veil: You become invisible as a bonus action. This is another import from Tasha's and you got it at 10th level in that book. I will say that this COULD be decent depending on how long this actually lasts for. If this lasts only until the start of your next turn (like it does in Tasha's) its worthless as a utility feature. It's also bad in combat because you want to use your bonus action for Hunter's Mark or maybe something else like commanding your beast companion and this ability directly competes with that. Keep in mind that spellcasters can pick up the Invisibility spell at level 3 for better utility or Greater Invisibility at level 7 for better use in combat.
    - Level 17: You gain advantage on attack rolls against the target of your Hunter's Mark. Barbarians get Reckless Attack at level 2, Rogues get Steady Aim at level 3, the new Fighter gets a feature that gives them advantage when they miss an attack roll at level 14, Wizards are able to cast Foresight and get advantage on everything at this point. This is truly pathetic.
    - Level 18: You get Blindsight to a range of 30ft. This is fine, just not good or particularly useful at this point in the game. See Invisibility is a 2nd level spell.
    - Level 20: The extra damage of your Hunter's Mark increases from a d6 to a d10. That's an average of 2 more damage whenever Hunter's Mark takes effect.
    Beast Master:
    - Beast Master uses the Primal Beast stat blocks from Tasha's. You get Beast of the Land, Sea, or Sky. These stat blocks do scale, but the fact that needs to be specified says a lot about how bad Beast Master was. Hopefully they keep the option to command your beast by using a bonus action or by sacrificing one attack from your attack action. That way on turns when you need to move Hunter's Mark you can still command your beast as a part of the attack action so it doesn't just wind up sitting there doing nothing.
    - At higher levels your Beast gains an extra attack and can benefit from Hunter's Mark and any spell you cast on yourself also effects your beast if they are within 30ft. This would be at level 11 and 15, respectively, if the UA is to be believed.
    Fey Wanderer:
    - Straight up imported from Tasha's. I'm not even surprised at this point.
    - I would like to point out that I am not mad that popular features, changes, and subclasses from Tasha's made it into this book. However, I am mad when you say "this is a completely new class" and then just copy all the previously published band-aids that made the class playable, package them with a handful of new features that come too little too late, and then proudly claim to have fixed the class.
    - The Ranger feels like the designers forgot about a homework assignment until the morning it was due and then copied their friend's homework and walked out on set to deliver their presentation. Like they didn't even talk about subclass features.
    Gloomstalker:
    - Is now associated with the Shadowfell for some reason. The Underdark makes more sense, IMHO.
    - Level 3 Dread Ambusher: Your extra damage feature is no longer tied to the first round of combat. Rather than getting one extra attack on round one with bonus damage, you gain a number of Dreadful Strikes to add psychic damage to a weapon attack. Their bonus to initiative returns as well.
    - Level 3 Umbral Sight: This feature returns. You gain Darkvision if you don't have it and the range of your Darkvision increases if you already had Darkvision. In addition, creatures that rely on Darkvision to see in Darkness cannot see you. The whole invisible in darkness thing is really cool. It's basically permanent Greater Invisibility if you're in darkness, but I'll be a bit disappointed if this just comes back as it was. It can cause conflict with players who either need light in combat because they lack Darkvision or because they play subclasses with features that give off light. I happened to play a Gloomstalker in a game with both a Devotion Paladin and a Stars Druid. It sucks when class abilities conflict with or cancel each other out.
    - Level 7 Iron Mind: Returns as before.
    - Level 11: Stalker's Flurry has been reworked. It now increases the damage caused by your Dreadful Strikes and grants an ability to Frighten enemies. Frightened is an interesting condition when combined with Gloomstalker's semi-invisibility in Umbral Sight because most fear effects require you to see the source of your fear. This may have been addressed, and isn't the worst thing ever, however it will be an annoying experience when playing with rules lawyers.
    - Level 15: You can teleport away from attacks.
    Hunter:
    - Level 3 Hunter's Lore: You learn the damage resistances, immunities and vulnerabilities of creatures marked by Hunter's Mark. This should just be in the base class...
    - Also Level 3 Hunter's Prey: You still get some choices here. They claim to have whittled it down to the best choices (press X to doubt) and you can now change your choice on a short rest.
    - Level 7 Defensive Tactics: They mentioned Escape the Horde and Multiattack defense returning. You can swap these on a short rest as well.
    - Level 11 Superior Hunter's Prey: When you deal damage to a creature with Hunter's Mark, you can cause another nearby creature to take the Hunter's Mark damage as well. Volley and Whirlwind attack were more effective and flavorful.
    - Level 15 Superior Hunter's Defense: You can use a reaction to gain resistance to the damage of an incoming attack. This feels uninspired.
Jeremy Crawford: "It's interesting that both the Fey Wanderer and Gloomstalker both deal extra psychic damage!"
Me: The whole 2024 Ranger class is causing psychic damage :(

Normally, I come here to hype up changes. I want to be hyped for these changes. I started doing this because I was so excited about the Fighter that I fell into writing these out and just stuck with it. But this is... awful. I've played Ranger and most of these "changes" that make this a "completely new class" are optional rules that I was using back in 2021. The only new features come in at level 1 and then you have to wait for 13-20, but I hesitate to call a free Hunter's Mark a new feature and even the high level stuff just feel weak and uninspired at their level. Seriously, if you cut out all of my commentary from this post, this would be the shortest List of Changes I've written because of how few new things have been added.
While I loved playing Rangers, I was often frustrated by how niche everything felt and by how often the spell rules and action economy conflicted. While this has made the class less niche, it did so by cutting out mechanically weak but flavorful abilities and replaced them with Hunter's Mark The Class. It just feels uninspired. It feels like the designers just don't know what to do with Rangers to make them interesting and useful in more than a handful of situations. They seem stuck on the idea that Hunter's Mark needs to be a core class feature yet can't even decide if Rangers are spellcasters or martial characters. I think they need to wipe the slate clean on Ranger and start again and I hope that community outcry causes them to at least start that process. I doubt there will be changes to the class before the new PHB comes out but maybe we can get a UA or a player supplement to offer some improvements. In the meantime, I will be playing a Fighter.

Also, I really disliked how over explainy he got when trying to hype up the "new" (Tasha's) changes, and am so beyond disappointed. The biggest question for me is if they think This was a substantial rework, then what did they do to Monk to even mention it as another class that got a similar treatment 😢.

2024 ranger isnt even good only being compared to itself. three/four class features and some subclass features require you to always use hunters mark in combat and keep your bonus action available to move/activate it. there are other things that the 2024 ranger could do but would miss out on the "benefits" of several of their class features if they chose to do that instead of using hunters mark (ie: casting ANY other concentration spell, use their bonus action for almost anything else)

The main issue with this class is two-fold, and both issues involve Hunter's Mark.
    1. They have gated most of the features behind a 1st lvl spell that you must concentrate on, thereby eliminating your other spells from use.
    2. That spell uses your BA quite consistently, which will clash with many other BA options, essentially removing those options from the table.

This was cited to be too powerful in play testing.. which is wild.. because the same play test limited hunters mark to apply its damage 1/turn. Which is why we get "cant break concentration" at high level and the 20 level capstone being able to swing for 3d10 force damage with hunters mark. MIND YOU .. if they removed the 1/turn damage limiter on the play test hunters mark so a dual wield ranger ( swinging 3 times for the attack action along) being 3d6 + 9 d10 + 3xstat could be juicy for damage. But .. other classes do similar.. while getting other cool things.
I do feel this ranger is a improvement over the 2014 one. We need more context over the ranger specific spells and other special strikes to really see the big picture however. Here is a thing:
    Split mind (feat):
    Prerequisite: Int 15, level 5.
You have dealt with mind breaking concentration for so long that you have learned to split it for a time. When already concentrating on a spell casting a second concentration spell requires an intelligence check against your own spell DC. Failure means both spells are ended. On a success the user may maintain the second spell for 1d4+1 rounds.
This is just a quick thing I wrote just because I was bored. If anyone wants to ise it or improve it
    Godspeed.
Edit: I don't actually care how anyone would change it. I just made because people constantly complain about concentration and stuff.

    • @AlphaOmega08922
      @AlphaOmega08922 2 дні тому

@dwaynejackson551 I don't think the check should be made against your own spell DC. I think it should be an INT saving throw with a flat DC of 15. 15 is the standard "hard" level save DC, and it makes sense for highly intelligent spellcasters to be able to split their focus better than others. This would give Wizards an edge when it comes to concentration similar to what Sorcerers get (Sorcerers already get CON save proficiency, making it easier to maintain concentration on a spell when they take damage).
I also think that you should have to make the save at the start of every turn while you're concentrating on both spells, with a -1 penalty to the roll for each successive turn, showing its compounding difficulty to maintain that split concentration.

I will say, in all my experience with 2014, the Ranger from levels 1 thru 5 or 7 was actually really good. Take a level 2 ranger with this 2024 material. Free cast of Hunter's Mark, Nick Property, TWF fighting style. They are going to be able to hit for 2d6+2d6+6 or 20 damage a turn. Your Fighter at level 2 is going to be doing only 2d6+6 or 13 damage with the same set-up.
Level 3 subclass, most ranger subclasses give +1d8 per turn, raising them up to 24.5 per turn.
The 2014 Ranger did very good at low levels, and fell off as the levels went on. So, in terms of the ranger getting better at higher levels, that is exactly when they NEEDED to get better.
    ...
Now, to be fair and balanced. Hunter's Mark really should drop Concentration entirely by mid-levels. I'd be fine with it dropping concentration by level 9, or making it so if you cast it as a 3rd level spell it doesn't require concentration which I think would be fairly balanced.
Also, the 20th level capstone sucks, and I saw a really interesting idea for a homebrew of that. Which is that to instead have the feature be that every enemy counts as having your hunter's mark applied to it. Which is a very cool level 20 concept

Exactly, the ranger has more versatility right now and combining that with weapon mastery and ptjer stuff, people can focus on hunters mark, but the exploration options along with the damage you still get from hunters mark still as a bonus action and the druidic warrior option, i think you should wait to play it then judge it afterwards because they left some stuff out.

Skipping the exploration and travel is the worst fall off in modern DMing. those were some of the best time when i played many many years ago and it's just not used. Everything is just show up, fight win zap somewhere else. Perhaps when a ranger joins your playthrough, it's time to think about exploration elements. I will give exploration a try when they make the minutiae of it better. I don't describe the paths they travel beyond the obstacles in the way for the same reason I don't remember every detail of the road I drove yesterday unless I saw a car crash. Travel is boring. Videogames fix that with teleportation, movies with a montage, books can gloss over the travel with a jump cut (and before I get the reply that LOTR is all about travelling to Mt. Doom to drop the ring in the volcano, the movies emphasize moments where they are doing literally anything other than walking silently. They will talk, they will encounter something. They will setup camp. Walking isn't a story.) D&D needs to cut exploration for the pacing. I am half serious.
"Crawl" is the word people use to describe going through dungeons. It is interesting, isn't it, that the word we use to describe painfully slow movement, is how we best approach it. A lot of times the rooms have like, 3 important things, and then there is nothing else to see in that area. There is a problem, that the eye can see faster than the mouth can describe what the eye sees. When you crawl through a dungeon, the path is hewn with bricks, a number you aren't particularly interested in but are aware of. I am not going to sit and watch as the DM populates a room full of stuff that would have taken me 10 seconds to see and conceptualize, so they prioritize. A library doesn't need every title listed out for a party to see, only the titles they are specifically interested in and the ones that are plot relevant. A library could have hundreds of books, but we would be hard pressed for a DM to give us 10 titles of them.
You want exploration? Make the map to a level of detail a character could see. Otherwise, I am fine with broadly generalizing "Your party walks for 10 miles through the forest, and sets up camp at sundown."

@@gingerinajacket8519 You have to go outside of D&D for exploration. I don't have the book on me, but greatest advice was to make exploration beat based, like in a movie. Examples of beats are combat, searching, discovery (where the old shepard tells the heroes about the unknown path around the mountain) and travel (story telling, describing the area) You then make a bunch of beats and use them to keep the flow going. And when the players start to get bored of traveling, seamlessly move them back into the adventure. WARNING: Players may use exploration to leave the adventure completely. Hell a month ago we were tracking down a falling meteor through a forest, didn't need the DM to spend 40 hours making a map cause we have minds, all he needed was some notes on what was likely to be around and an idea of the lay of the land.
If maps are your obsession, then make maps you can flip and turn and plop what you need like tiles.
Perhaps its an effect of the newer DND versions, but in older versions we hardly ever wrapped up travel with "x hours and camp" and called it there. That's video game impatience in my eyes.
But if that's your thing, go for it, but leave some options for those who want more than 2 pillars and a video game style experience.

Going on top of the beast being a bonus action while summoned creatures aren't I would also say that the difference is between a trained creature vs an untrained creature. The rangers beast has been trained to follow orders while the summoned beast, fey etc are acting of instinct. That's how I've always pictured it anyways.

The 2024 Ranger probably gets the most "exploratoion" options, aside from maybe the wizard, since the wizard gets so many spells. But you can't compare elements from different pillars of play with each other, they're horses and mushrooms, forget apples and oranges. Ignoring one of the core pillars of play in the game means a class than it intrinsically tied to that pillar of play is automatically lessened. But the Bard (and to a lesser extent, the Rogue, and of course the Wizard) gets boosts to their "social encounter" options as WELL as their boosts to combat, so the Ranger even SEEMS to be lessened more. The solution is to make Exploration more compelling, either in the core game, or at your table.
Really, a bunch of free Hunter's Marks just means you'll always have it in your back pocket. At higher levels, the bonuses to Hunter's Mark makes them more tempting to use than another concentration spell, depending on what you want to do in any given combat. More than any other class revealed so far, being a Ranger is going to depend on subclass features to "live the fantasy" without any help from your DM. But while these are good subclasses, one of the better subclasses for Rangers, Gloom Stalker, technically gets a nerf (some burst damage instead of a whole other attack). But then again, the Hunter Ranger seems to actually be worth taking, now...
But, man, they really never know what to do for a Ranger's capstone. Originally, it was add Wisdom bonus to weapon attack or damage once per turn. Now it's roll a d10 for Hunter's Mark instead of a d6. The best I've seen was one homebrew which changed the 2014 capstone to add Wisdom to both weapon attacks AND damage, without limits. You can just do it. Which still isn't THAT great, +4 or +5 to hit and damage may mean you're hitting more often, but that's just an extra 4 or 5 damage per hit. Meanwhile, a 20th level wizard has 9th level spells, a 20th level Fighter can attack 4 times in a round (or 8 if they use one of their action surges).

Yeah, they actually nerfed Foe Slayer for the Ranger. It's actually insane how out of touch they are with making Rangers any closer to the power level of the other classes. All they could've done was move Foe Slayer to an earlier level (like Level 10) and we would've lost our minds (exaggerating, but still).
This isn't disappointing, it's just embarrassing at this point how bad they have made the Ranger.

This will fix hunters mark bonus action bloat, since it’s a bonus action to cast and transfer. This change fixes issue with commanding your animal companion, two weapon fighting, your invisibility feature and other bonus action spells. Also I’d have the special free hunters mark the ranger gets scale in damage at certain levels. Increasing by a d6 at 7th and 14th to a max of 3d6. I find it funny that in 3.5 rangers and druids got animal companions at certain levels. Now in 3.5 animal companions were whole other characters that followed your lead. They also got fests that improved their own potency in combat. That said, the druid in 3.5 was super OP with powerful spells AND physical damage with flanking beast form and combat oriented animal companion.
The Ranger on the other hand was not as useful in combat. But they were the skill monkies of martial characters. Wizards felt the class LITERALLY needed another character to give it the combat presence of say a fighter or paladin.
Also drizzit is a hunter ranger with a figurine of wonderous power rather than a beast master. If you think in wrong read ONE of the drizzit books
As for the new ranger class I'll be interested to see how the beast master's primal companion meshes with a natural animal. Remember that the Tasha's version was a template that gained attacks based off the creature you chose, so you could have a beast of the land take the form of a panther, which had multi attack, a bite and a claw attack as well as the maul attack and charge from the creature of the land stat block.

Have the special uses of hunter's mark that you get for free only last for 1 minute, but they're concentration free. All other castings of hunter's mark are the regular duration and do require concentration. Then the 13th level feature isn't useless.

Or just remove the concentration requirement for HM entirely. It wouldn't really be that broken of an ability to remove it. Just have HM last for the duration. My proposed fix to the issue they were having where people would stack Hex and Hunter's Mark, that's better than Concentration on both:
      1. Bring back Marking as a way to describe the mechanic of "Applying a Marking effect to a target will cause that target to take extra damage when attacked by the creature that Marked them, with the type of this extra damage and other effects depending on the nature of the Marking". That describes Hex, Hunter's Mark, and a few other abilities in the game.
      2. Describe Hunter's Mark and Hex as targeting "A creature not already Marked by you".
      Boom. Done.

@JohnvanCapel Honestly, being able to stack Hunter's Mark and Hex wouldn't even be that bad. It's only 2d6 extra damage. Paladins over here can burn one single spell slot and deal 5d8 radiant damage from smiting plus 1d8 radiant damage from IDS, plus their normal weapon damage all without sacrificing any action economy at all, plus no concentration. Barbarians can get +4 rage damage while gaining bludgeoning, slashing and piercing resistance and advantage on all strength checks, and only have to use a single bonus action to have these benefits for up to 10 rounds of combat. Full casters can, with a single spell, pump out hundreds of points of damage without even really trying. Warlocks can do virtually anything they want with their Invocations and pact boons. Rogues can reliably get up to 10d6 extra damage once every turn, again without sacrificing any action economy for it.
But yeah, stacking Hunter's Mark and Hex for an extra 2d6 damage on hit is too powerful.

Honestly I think a lot of the changes didn't go far enough. It definitely feels like the Ranger was brought closer into line with the other classes... from 2014, but all the other classes are also getting big buffs, so the ranger is once again left behind.
Hunters mark could have been made a free action without concentration and I straight up don't even think that would have been that broken. Hunters mark only affects weapon attacks (not your spells) and only affects YOU (and your beast much past the point where you'd want it). An extra 1d6 is nothing past the starter levels, especially at high levels. It becoming a 1d10 or whatever is not comparable to the triple digit numbers per turn that other classes can highroll into at those levels. Like, is anyone going to be excited by an extra ~3-5 damage per hit?
Favored enemy/terrain has always been... underwhelming. Should have been reworked entirely, maybe give some themed spells or whatever like BG3. A lot of tables skip exploration type stuff because it can take up a tremendous amount of time and isn't particularly rewarding a lot of the time. It feels like you have to basically get lucky and guess what the DM will use, or the features were useless to you.
Beast master summon should move on it's own initiative rather than needing a bonus action. Everyone knows it, everyone says it.
I can't speak much to the other subclasses because I've not played them, and tbh that doesn't look likely to change.

Honestly I might be alone on this but I think creatures summoned by spells should require a bonus action to command and creatures from subclass or class specific features like drake warden or beast master should have there own turn and not take an action from the player use do things. because they trained creatures not summons.

Making Hunter's Mark the entire focus of the class is the most egregious example of polishing a turd in the 2024 reprints so far.
Here's the class list for 2024.
    Barbarian
    Bard
    Cleric
    Druid
    Fighter
    Monk
    Divine Smite spell caster
    Hunter's Mark spell caster
    Rogue
    Sorcerer
    Warlock
    Wizard
Here's the class list for 6e if this kind of shit is allowed to fly.
    Rage spell caster
    Bard
    Cleric
    Wildshape spell caster
    Extra Attack spell caster
    Flurry of Blows spell caster
    Divine Smite spell caster
    Hunter's Mark spell caster
    Sneak Attack spell caster
    Sorcerer
    Eldritch Blast spell caster
    Wizard

I don't understand since in 5th edition they made subclasses. They brought them back from first edition and originally paladin ranger. They were both subclasses. Why didn't they just make them subclasses again and that would have saved a lot of problems

    @LocalMaple 3 дні тому +4

I loved 5e Ranger. As a 5 Ranger 3 Rogue, I took out a CR8 Chain Devil with doubled HP and Hasted, solo.
I’d sooner play a Classless 2024 Fighter with a Hex Warlock dip than the classless 2024 Ranger. Hex is Hunter’s Mark substitute and Invisibility is a Warlock spell, while Fighter with their extra ASI can take Feats for Expertise and Blindsight Fighting Style to emulate the rest of the Ranger features; and you get actually good subclasses through Fighter and Warlock and at lower levels.
The 2024 Ranger subclasses needed to be beyond stellar… But only Hunter has promise to raise Ranger to the Classed Paladin level. That’s right, the other half caster half martial class is better than most Classed Rangers even if it never takes a Subclass.

  • @joshuapurinton7752

With the nick weapon property and two weapon fighting, you can make 4 attacks at level 5. with hunter's mark you're looking at upwards of 8d6 in a round. On a free casting of a 1st level spell. That's a fireball, every round, for the price on concentration. You are looking at your new sustained damage build. I think a tier 2 ranger could in fact be fun.

    • @barcster2003
      @barcster2003 День тому

4 attacks? Although I agree people are forgetting the fact you can choose to dual wield and that those options will have weapon mastery.

    • @joshuapurinton7752
      @joshuapurinton7752 День тому

@barcster2003 with extra attack, you get 2, you get a free one with nick, if your target is still up, bonus action attack with your 2nd weapon, if not, transfer hunters mark. Sure, MOST of the time, you're probably getting 3, but that's still a lot of sustained, single target damage. And that damage output is only the main class. Your subclass is also going to give you more damage output.

    • @KevinVideo
      @KevinVideo 23 години тому

You're assuming that the 2024 hunter's mark is the 2014 version. If it is, great. However, the playtest version was changed to once per round. That makes it no longer fireball damage.

    • @barcster2003
      @barcster2003 23 години тому

@joshuapurinton7752 that's not how it works. Nick just allows the bonus action to be part of the attack action it doesn't give you another attack they said. It frees up your bonus action but doesn't allow for a 4th attack.

    • @joshuapurinton7752
      @joshuapurinton7752 11 годин тому

@barcster2003 if my bonus action is freed up, why couldn't I use it for an attack? That how two weapon fighting works afterall. I haven't seen anything in nick that disallows using your bonus action to attack after using the Nick attack, so did I miss something?

I disagree with Tasha's beast master criticism. Sacrificing part of your attack/bonus action is so much better than commanding the beast for free. It's the difference between 8 attacks and 2 attacks.

  • @JCinLapel
    @JCinLapel 9 годин тому

I think that the ranger needed to have something letting you get extr off hand attacks when in melee When using a bow they have the option to drop 1 damage die to make an extra attack as a bonus action and all rangers should have an 1/4 CR animal compainion that can take one attack per round or give aid. I think Beast master should get more powerful beast and a way to impove it also they should ba able to get limited monsuterous and fay animals like a Sptite younger displacer beast, Blink dog or even control a swarm. I could so see a Mindflayer ranger having a swarm of crainum rats. Fighter try to do it all, Barbarian are about taking a hit, Pallies are about the big single hit, Ranger should be the master of multi attacks.....

  • @nathanielweber7843
    @nathanielweber7843 2 дні тому

Feedback for a new dm: what would be the downsides to giving a beast master a second limited bonus action that only commands the beast? The upsides give them hunters mark and beast control, or downing a healing potion and beast control, but where is the downside to this? Is this too op?

    • @KevinVideo
      @KevinVideo 23 години тому

Why even need the second bonus action? Just have the pet have its own initiative and act immediately after the ranger. If the paladin can have that, why not the ranger?

  • @CitanulsPumpkin

It's sad, but the solutions to the 5e ranger are not coming from the D&D design team.
I fixed ranger with two resources.
First, I use the hex travel rules in the WebDM book Weird Wastelands, and I break hexes and terrain types down into four types.
    Uneven
    Rough
    Impassable
    Road
Take the speed of a creature, mount, or vehicle and drop the ones digit from the number. That is how many hexes that creature or vehicle can move in one day of traveling over Uneven terrain. Plains, rolling hills, villages, towns, and farmlands.
Rough terrain costs two hexes of movement. Sand dunes, rocky slopes, foothills, light forests, and bush lands.
Impassable terrain has to be run like a dungeon. Winding mountain passes, hacking through dense jungles or haunted forests, or creeping through swamps.
Hexes with a road running through them cost half a hex worth of movement.
So a creature with 30 feet of movement in a day can move three hexes over uneven terrain, two hexes through rough terrain, or six hexes if they stick to the roads.
The second source I use to buff ranger is Magic the Gathering. Rangers lose Hunter's Mark, favored enemy, and favored terrain picks. They get to keep everything else in Tasha's. At levels 1, 6, 14, 20, and for picking a subclass, the ranger picks one color of mana
    White
    Blue
    Black
    Red
    Green
    Colorless
Every creature type, terrain type, class, and background is tied to one or more mana colors. Rangers get the following for their mana choice.
    1. Rangers learn their Int mod in languages each time they gain a favored mana color.
    2. All Dex, Int, and Wis ability checks related to anything tied to their favored mana colors are made with advantage.
    3. All weapon attacks against creatures tied to favored mana colors are made with advantage and deal one additional damage die of the weapon's normal type.
    4. Rangers and their traveling companions, mounts, and vehicles treat all terrains tied to their favored mana as if they were roads.
Need to cross the Forgotten Realms version of the Rocky mountains in a day or two instead of a month? Get a ranger who picked red mana to guide you. Need to cross the "death swamps" and don't feel like treating every step through the bog as if it was a dungeon crawl? Call up a black mana hunting ranger.
I don't see myself playing the Hunter's Mark class. If I run a game for a ranger player, I'll probably tell them what two mana colors are probably going to pop up the most in the campaign, and then I'll tell them they'll have a better time using my homebrew.

Lets what you get new with the Ranger, and if I'm right (Taking a page of MrRhexx) there Is a lot of things that they dont tell you in this video:
1ST LEVEL: DEFT EXPLORER: They give you a skill proficiencie of the ranger list (Note you gain EXPERTISE in that skill)
    - (Secret Feature) (Unearth Arcana) In addition, choose two types of terrain: In which you have Advantage on Intelligence (Nature) checks about the chosen Terrain, and you have Advantage on Wisdom (Survival) checks to track creatures in them.
-SPELLCASTING: (New) New Spells are added and othera change, also and you can change one spell from your list every long rest.
    2ND LEVEL:
    -FAVORED ENEMY:
You are adept at focusing on a single foe. You always have the Hunter’s Mark spell prepared. You can cast it a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier
    -(NEW) FIGHTING STYLES
    6TH LEVEL:
-ROVING: Your Speed increases by 10 feet while you aren’t wearing Heavy Armor.
You also have a Climb Speed and a Swim Speed equal to your Speed.
9TH LEVEL: (Secret Feature) (Unearth Arcana)
-CONJURE BARRAGE: Channeling nature’s might, you can cause your weapon to multiply and strike at creatures before you; you always have the Conjure Barrage spell prepared.
    10TH LEVEL:
-TIRELESS: Primal forces now help fuel you on your journeys, granting you the following benefits:
Temporary Hit Points. As an action, you can give yourself a number of Temporary Hit Points equal to 1d8 plus your Wisdom modifier (minimum of 1). You can use this action (Bonus action...in theory) a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
Decrease Exhaustion. Whenever you finish a short rest, your Exhaustion level, if any, decreases by 1.
    13TH LEVEL: (New Feature)
-The concentración of Hunter’s Mark can no longer be broken. (I wonder if this affect ALL the castings of that spell like Archfey Warlock mist step)
    14TH LEVEL:
-NATURE’S VEIL: You invoke spirits of nature to magically hide yourself from view.As a Bonus Action, you can give yourself the Invisible condition until the end of your next turn (Note is possible that you became full Invisible, until you attack or cast a spell)
You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Wisdom modifier (minimum of once), and you regain all expended uses when you finish a Long Rest.
17TH LEVEL: (Secret Feature) (Unearth Arcana)
-CONJURE VOLLEY: Propelled by primal spirits, your weapon can strike a group of targets far away; you always have the Conjure Volley spell prepared.
    18TH LEVEL:
-FERAL SENSES: Your connection to the forces of nature grants you Blindsight with a range of 30 feet.
20Th LEVEL: D6 a D10 in Hunter’s Mark. (I would prefer the version of in Unearth Arcana)
Lets hope up that this changes are not final, and that the ranger can be Buff a lot more.
