Company of Heroes 3 has been out for over a month now, and just last week it received its biggest update yet. Introducing the in-game store, challenges, and a bunch of fixes and gameplay changes, is this the update COH3 needs? Or is it simply a micro transaction store with a few stat numbers?

If they have a "rarity" score its highly likely they will add loot boxes at some point.
God I fuckin hate video games these days.
This is modern gaming, if they have a opportunity they will pull nonsense like that.
Yup saw this shit coming since dawn of war 3
honestly im not sure
consumer push back on loot boxes has been so extreme at this point that basically no one does them anymore, besides mobile only
rarity is bizarre but id be SHOCKED to see old friend the boxes back
ive been wrong before tho....
I doubt so, lootboxes are gone, they're even banned in a few countries as inducing gambling. If anything they'd jump on the very profitable Season Pass model, but they don't need Lootboxes for rarity scores, they're just bs to price stuff more
Holy shit... The store, the challenges... IT'S HALO INFINITE ALL OVER AGAIN
modern gaming is a fucking hellhole. games worth your time and money are so few and far between its unfathomable. corruption and greed never fail to ruin everything
Get ready for company of heroes infinite
The prevailing motto of the software industry is: "The software gets shipped as soon as the updater works." - The games industry has extended this to: "The software is finished as soon as the shop is up and running".
Aren't we living in glorious times?
Back when we have to buy the physical spinner to play a game, they have to make sure the game is in good shape before release. But what happened in the past stay in the past
Wow dow 3 really did a number on Relic
Good.
"Our game hasn't been preforming well player wise and review wise, how do we improve this? I know, in game purchases for mediocre skins" the absolute state of gaming in current year.
I've come to hate challenge systems, let alone in 60 euro games. I work 9/5, I'd be paying premium for an incomplete feeling game that wants me to spend more money in an ingame shop and more time to pad their statistics when I just want to come home and relax/play at my own pace.
Of course it does not force me but it does try to coax me and I don't need a salesmen in my home
Yeah I feel you, video games are escapism, and sure they can have challenge, but as soon as they start to feel like real life chores and duties I'm out, I don't need to be reminded constantly of a clock ticking and needing to punch in the hours for menial tasks to get my paycheck, especially when it feels psychologically manipulative out of the box.
@@nathane5287 And the fact that you can't do the challenges with mods on, brilliant Relic maybe if your game with complete we wouldn't need mods to flesh it out but no you get punished for using mods.
Hmm... Yeah no, weekly challenge to get merit just reminds me too much like those games with monthly battle pass, have to keep logging in every week just to complete challanges.
gotta keep that recurring login baby! i wish they added a little merit at the end of every game, having it just set at challenges is :||||||
@@Zade_95 Yeah the trouble is they want to up logins and login time which for me has had the complete opposite effect for me, in the time I am willing to spend on a game I usually can unlock the 30 merit one alone. I play a couple of games a week and that is about it, how do they not understand their playerbase tends to older and don't have hours and hours to devote to the game. Once I saw how the merit system works it was complete turn off, as it is an integral part of the game it turned me off that as well and up to then I was enjoying the game.
The shop was kind of the last nail in the coffin for me. At least for now.
The mod-support seem nice, but I somewhat doubt that it will get any major support from Relic. Especially since the shop seems to depend on cosmetics, and any good visual mods would under-cut their offers on the shop. 🤷♂
I'm probably gonna wait for a major price-drop.
Fair enough - Mod support is going to be a massive determining factor if this game lives in the long term imo
@@ryanvetter5852 Kinda hope they do out of spite, i want to see relic fail at this point. Its fucked up to see how far they've fallen
It's like devs have forgotten how to make real time strategy games over the years. Dreadful.
Kind of just games in general these days, I have learned not to buy games on launch month 😂
@@manindisgiuze7780 amen.
I think men of war 2 will be the best rts in awhile.
@@MichaelWhittmann I don't know if you played the multiplayer beta but Men of War 2 seems pretty bad in my opinion.
@Manin Disgiuze Well see, I don't think it'll be as good as Assualt Squad 2 but I'm hoping it will be.
This is what optimism gets you, another Live Service
I'll stick to COH mods thank you.
Yeah, I'm sticking with COH1, I don't like COH2. It just doesnt feel as fun as COH1.
totally fair imo
Appreciate the update on the game a month after it's launch. "I don't want everything cool in the game locked behind a paywall, but I at least want to think the stuff on offer is cool and enticing." Unfortunately, what I've come to understand about in-game stores (based off my own limited experience in the game industry) is that there's no real incentive for the developers to make cool free/unlockable items when you can just incentivize players to pay money for them. The color palette swaps like camos are really not that difficult for a game artist to create and certainly shouldn't cost what Relic is charging for them. I'm at the point where I just don't think an in-game store should be present in any game that you pay up front for. I'd personally rather pay more money to purchase a game up front if that meant it would never have a store in it. The problem with that though is how do you trust that the developer won't just add one in post launch? I guess that would depend on how much said developer/publisher cares about their reputation as a company which unfortunately, many don't seem to do nowadays.
On the point of mods, what Relic should do is take a page out of Bethesda's playbook and actually encourage mod making. You look at an old game like Skyrim which still manages to turn a profit for Bethesda in large part because of the modding community. No need for an in-game store when people will still buy the game years after its initial release simply for the mods.
They do this shit because nobody releases complete games anymore. They charge you full price and tune it as time goes on. It’s annoying for the consumer, but it’s actually smart of the developers to do this. They get paid and the game gets patched more regularly as they monitor the data unlike the old days where you’d only get a patch when a dlc dropped
Yesterday i had a game on a desert 3v3 map, where my Anti Tank guns and even my tanks all shot into the ground instead of hitting the tank (if there was a hill it was definitely not that high, and it was a victory point). That was really frustrating because 7-10 shots didnt hit...
SAME!!!
They should made height of terrain be more visible It's great mechanic, but lacks support in their interface.
@@zbigniew2628 had nothing to do with terrain. AT shots fall short often. The first shot usually always misses. If you get unlucky you can miss 2-3 per gun
THIS HAS BEEN HAPPENING SO MUCH! i was in the campaign about 20 minutes ago, and my tanks would straight up shoot the ground or obstacles nearby if the enemy they were targeting had any elevation difference. i had to move my tanks into vulnerable positions to even get them to hit on target. and my god the path tracing is so bad im surprised they've let it fester this long. so many units lost due to the AI having zero braincells when it comes to traversing around the map
Majority of the units in CoH3 have pretty bad aim, the only ones having good accuracy being machineguns/autocannons.
It still takes 2 and a sneeze to kill light vehicles with an AT gun, yet the one thing preventing them so is how bad their aim is.
They gotta work on some unit's hit chances; although hopes are it's coming with the major balance patch down the line. This most recent major patch is still a balance pass aimed mostly at the most notorious balance breakers just so such things are on even ground compared to the other things in game before doing an entire balance rework.
Maybe I'm old, but I last time I remember really enjoying an RTS was Deserts of Kharak. There's something about new RTS games that makes me unable to get into them. I tried CoH2, Spellforce 3 and Iron Harvest. Bounced off all of them before I even finished the campaign. Meanwhile I can go back to Red Alert 3, both SupComs Starcraft 1 and 2 and even oldies like Erath, recently I played Dark Reign for the first time and I loved the heck out of it.
This new CoH, from presentation to features, does not speak to me at all. And microtransactions on top of all that? Man...
have you tried steel division 2? i myself am an oldschool rts guy and i find sd2 to be extremely fun. its my 5th most played game on steam
@@sneakycactus8815 I did not, because Wargame wasn't really for me, but I heard SD2 is much more about direct combat, so it's in my "play it someday" backlog.
@@ThatDjinn well if you ever come across a good sale (that is if you dont already own the game), id say go for it. it is as you say, more about direct combat. no basebuilding of any sort short of some defences you can place on the map, on one specific multiplayer game mode. but the combat simulation is top notch and the ai isnt that bad. multiplayer always has 1-2 full 10v10 servers during peak US hours, with a handful of 4v4, 3v3, and so on servers. though, as you might expect with modern games these days, dlc's can get a little excessive. Eugen has been releasing more and more expensive low effort ones as of recent as well. so if you go deeper into the game, check out the most recommended dlc's and just get those. all is not required for fun as many are filled with copy pasted units.
@@sneakycactus8815 "no base building"
Stopped Reading. We are talking about RTS, here.
@@Barbarossa97 damn wtf. are you okay?
I'm not even sad how far Relic has fallen. I'm just disappointed.
Hopefully Blackbird Interactive will have a bright future.
I like how people still have this mentality that the funds from Microtransactions are going directly into the hands of developers. That will only happen if their studio is not beholden by Publisher. In reality, goes into the hand of their publisher first and everyone underneath the Publisher. Before the Dev team even get a percent of that money you paid. Which is why you see crazy as skins/DLCs end up showing up into games that doesn't make any sense for their setting. The publisher are the one that have a said in everything that get added into the game. So I won't be surprised if this game end up having anime skins.
Well said

Great job bringing this update videos, very useful to the users that don't have the game yet like me in order to know about the current state of coh 3, keep it up!!
thanks man :)
If Relic is open to improving modability that's a huge step above them madly calling all modders cheaters back at the release of CoH2, which I remember & which then already prevented modders from bugfixing or adding new content. I want complete modability on singleplayer, which is completely doable separate from multiplayer modes.
High sus considering they will add more battle group if they continue working on the game.
I really hope we'll be able to use mods with campaign. Really makes the replayability of it go through the roof.
dark brown pioneer. yup, thats the definition of "meh"
POG!!!!
serves you right, you trusted Relic
I am likely getting on console this fall. Loved 1&2 on PC. Hopefully the console version is decent. Usually only play private skirmishes and campaign. Thabks for the reviews
I restarted the Italian campaign about a week ago. I'm having more fun, but it really is just skirmishes with a mild progression system and a wonky strategy layer. The biggest annoyances are bad pathfinding and buggy line of sight right now. If they continue to work on the game and update it I'd be happy.
The expiry system was meant to make people always play the game and thus might help finding new buyers when they see people are still playing.
I can't wait for the next CoH3 video :D
😂 console review? :P
Same
How soulless. Adding daily quests and an item shop with coins. Good God what a travesty.
I know why my money goes to Creative Assembly at the moment when it comes to strategy games. I don't mind many DLC when they add value and content to the game.
"Give an inch, they will take a mile!" - Mobile Game Hater
I guarantee you they are going to put Battlegroups in the shop because that's exactly what CoH2 did, and somehow, putting additional commanders with literal in-game power advantages in the store for real money didn't get them crucified. CoH3 will have new Battlegroups with unique abilities and measurable power differences from the free ones.
CoH 3 added 2 Battlefronts to the store. I think they will add more.
So 1.1.1 “fixed” the ability to use tuning mods 2 days after 1.1.0 came out. Only because people where using cheat mod to get around the grind for challenges but they did not fix a bug a lot of players can’t even buy items with Merit.
they can shove their microtransaction where the sun don't shine.
so it will take "just" another 2-3 months until it gets to the state of "release".
i mean they have 2 COHs made and should have the Experience and feedback from the community so that the game should be way more finished and made with more "love".
i hope it will get better fast and the shop stays cosmetics only.
Thanks for the update.
Loved the first part, but this looks more like a mobile game.
Near camera to be able to touch everything, micro transactions,...
More of an operation "Cash Cow" instead
There are still a few bugs. The that is CMP Flak Truck is going under bridges when crossing. The truck faze though bridges, not good.
I looked at the reviews when it came out and said. I'll leave this one to cook a bit longer before I jump in. Might pick it up in a patch or two down the road once the bug fix list isn't a mile long.
The store left me with a bad first impression. It felt like the game is asking for more money when the game is priced at $70 (without a sale). I greatly appreciate that CoH 3 is not pay to win. I appreciate that the developers are still patching and updating the game.
Thank you for putting work and time on these videos, I spend years of my life playing CoH 1 when I was a kid and CoH 2 broke my heart, I haven't bought 3 yet but I might eventually but without someone like you making these videos I wouldn't even know half this information, thank you so much
While I appreciate Zade and it's opinion (being my fav RTS oriented channel), I can't stand next to CoH3 as it is right now. The selling points being some quality of life changes (like auto reinforce and auto base building) and four factions. And for that you get shitty unit physics, shitty unit audio (battle chatter and sound generated (engine, gun fire)), very few maps, generic and easy "dynamic campaign" and a subpart regular campaign. Not to mention the worst UI in franchise history (both pre game and in game). All the above show me that this game needed at least 6-9 months of polishing, so that's when I will consider buying it.
As it is right now, I cannot justify its pricing for such a poor product. But that is just me...
my pleasure, glad you appreciate it!
COH2 is pretty good, but It was filled with unecessary microtransactions. However that didnt broke the game, just our hearts. Today is a great experience, maybe in 10 years they will fix CoH3

I dunno man... I think I'll just stick to CoH 1 and the old DoW games. And Supreme Commander 2, yes I said it.
CoH2 is really good. And AoE4 doesnt look half bad.
I had to chuckle when you asked if we were still playing COH3 because I'm waiting on PS5 release. Console doesn't offer a whole lot like it unfortunately.
You dont need to turn into a mobile game to support your developpement.
Look at steel division 2, warno, broken arrow. They dont do any macrotranzactions, give out free dlc, have better graphics and more units and nations.

I was there for DOW3
I enjoyed it, loved the story. Best one in all of the dows. But very annoying to play and unbalanced.
An expiration time on the rewards? Completely inexcusable.
Why not just have the reward be auto-claimed? Someone went out of their way to add that for the sole reason of screwing over players who aren't paying attention, so they can make those players take longer to get cosmetic items and entise them to rather pay for them.
yeah just super weird to do imo. like who does it really benefit
@@Zade_95 it benefits execs whose metrics are recurring user engagement schedules.
I have about 55 hours in of multiplayer and i love it but i am slowing down (playing resident evil 4 tbf) and i will put more hours in but i do want more maps and faction content at some point this year. (Maps first and earlier though)
Welp looks like after DoW3 Lelic has become real shell of Og Relic
Good. Old Relic is a long dead corpse right now. We need to wait for devs with passion not just greed and its not just about that update. Its more about "lets make game for everyone" attitude.
Getting it on ps5, I hope its a good port. Looking forward to it and it's my 1st company of heroes game
I just released a video on the console version - though I was on Xbox Series X. Worked great for me, I'd like to think PS5 version is the same but definitely have a look online
I really couldnt get into the campaign of COH3 for much of the same reasons as you. I also only played a handful of online matches and found it to be quite empty and nothing like COH2, but mysteriously overnight COH2 just got a bunch of bugs and glitches and we were struggling to get matches to work right. Sync error codes, fatal script errors, just weird stuff I've never had to deal with before COH3...sus. 👀🤔
Maybe I'll open up 3 now that an update is out or wait another month or two to see what happens. 🤷♂️

That ingame shop is pathetic, but hey, at least the game will be on sale for 5-10 bucks within the next year.
silver lining pog
I’m really keen to get and try the game, but I’m waiting for it to release on console. No sign of it releasing anytime soon 😢
I've actually experienced more graphical bugs since the 1.1 update. And I don't think this gets commented on as much as it should, but how is this the 3rd installment in the franchise and the AI they programmed is so stupid. In 1v1, the AI sends its units along the edge of the map and gets more resources than you do
For me the scariest horror game was The forest, did jumpscare a few times in that game, good info about COH 3 thnx.
I hate it how they want to make every freaking game a "service" game. Not finished game release, rest will be free updates so they can say it is "Free" updates eventhou it should have been in from the start while they have an ingame shop of course.
Finally got my Rig fixed, though I realized, I should finish the other company heroes before I get to the 3rd. Would also help to get it on sale, especially since it seems like they may release a dlc. Feel like a summer sale might be best for me, though I am partial to buying it
Store is open!
Since the update I can’t play it anymore. It just crashes on startup or immediately after I start looking for a match.
That the campaign had no mod support is something that already fucked me up about CoH 2! - As long as they don't change this in CoH 3, I won't buy it!
L I G H T W O O D L A M I N A T E
I hate it when companies put microtransactions in games, especially ones we've already paid full money for. Why do we still put up with this?
In my opinion, it is not ok to introduce a freaking in-game MTX shop only 1 month after release while they charge 60!!!$€ for this game.
It would have been ok after let's say 1-2 years but not one month while the game is in a terrible state.
For me Sega is milkings the sinking ship... CoH3 is designed like a Free2play game without the benefits!
Relic as we loved it is long dead and we all should accept that and move on, indies and smaller productions will save the RTS genre.
Indy developers are too intellectually limited to produce a proper RTS. I have yet to be proven wrong.
Why have we normalized daily missions and premium and non premium currency why not just earn stuff through actuall gameplay like the coh2 system
I don't want to "earn" anything. I want fun and challenging gameplay. Modern gaming (and its gamers) are a scourge.
Still waiting for the game to drop 50% before buying~
Just a small advice for everybody: Whenever a new game gets out, wait until first bigger patch is released. It's will save you a lots of bad experiences, frustrations and nerves. I'm glad I waited for a big patch on this game.
great advice tbh
@Ryan Vetter It wont fix ALL problems, but, usually, with first patch, MOST of the problems are solved. The same is within games and/or other softwares.
I've only recently had the time to finish the campaigns and dip my toes into multiplayer. Totally a different beast. Even compared to the beta, where playing against real players was so much easier than against AI. Now it is opposite. Very hard to play against other people. My loss was all fair, but there are some aggravating issues with vehicles path finding and movement command. For some reason, they refuse to do reverse movement on multiple occasions.
all the sweats from CoH1 are in here and you have no idea how high the ceiling goes
currently there is no ranked play so you will face these people
Remember Dawn of war 3.
NZ$9 is a little over $5USD. That’s like fortnite pricing
COH 3 is doing the paradox meta make a bare bones game and improve it later xd
So they dont have naval battles?
I want to give Relic some slack, but fuck the currencies, teh moment I logged in and saw the 2 different ones I was sad
the mods are gonna be the only thing that will make me play this over coh2 or coh1 , if they dont give the modders full access to the tools then im out , and the skins and store feel so slapped together last minute , the m4 sherman skins for example doesnt even affect the 76 gun upgrade with the turret just being default colors... cmon did nobody test this? lol
Did you get a new Microphone?
no! better or worse? :P

Playing the devil's advocate yet again, eh Zade? 😮💨 Good luck with that.
Zade you should really take a look at the Age Of The Ring mod for BFME2, it's like the biggest middle earth mod out there and completely overhauls the base game with tons of new factions and crazy new units. It doesn't even feel like a mod sometimes, it's like an official game
You're like my favorite reviewer for RTS games and I'd love to see your take on it and to introduce it to new people. The final complete version of the mod released recently and it's a blast.
Looks really impressive! I've been thinking a little about going back into BFME2 sometime, so this could be a good avenue for that. Stay tuned!
If you want awesome WWII games, take a look at Steel Division I and II
Seems like they didn't learn anything from DoW 3.
The game should of had 1-2 years more development. Multiplayer at the moment is so unbalanced with the mighty Italian blob machine gunning everything in it path 😂

Cosmetic only? I can´t believe people have cucked themselfs by accepting this especially for a full money realease game. I miss the days were stuff could be unlocked ingame but no nowadays everyhing is "fine" if it´s cosmetic only, bloody hell Sterdust was right.
I just want them to move to coh 4 as soon as possible ...
Modern gaming ...
Maybe next year, on a deep discount this game will be finally worth it.
Typical gimping of modding tool so that players are forced to rely on paid DLC for new content. Fuck relic and fuck tuning packs. CoH1 and DoW1 remain the superior games.
Specifically, CoH1 and DoW:DC for vanilla game, and SS for mods. God-Emperor bless Unification.

JUST HOOK IT TO MY VEINS
There is almost no players in multiplayer most of the time.
This update just shows how dog shit the game is. They need to create challenges etc and not rely on the core game to keep people playing. Great to see vehicle pathfinding still sucks.
Meanwhile Beyond all reason is completely free and constantly updated with new maps coming out fairly often.
Wait... it's been a MONTH!? I thought... omg time is just slipping by me

haha, glad it did! it was actually an error - that was a youtube selected one has I added my own and then went to bed.... but something clearly went wrong. got my own on now!
This is just sad. The second game had macro transactions too but i hoped they wouldn't do this crap again. As much as i hate dlc spam from companies like Paradox, it's still a better route than an ingame store with funbucks and all the manipulation involved.
I just want the campaign to be fixed.
I hope Microsoft or Embracer Group buy Relic Entertainment.
Seriously, Age of Empires 4 without microtransactions is going well. WTF, SEGA?
Challenges are bad, they aren't aligned to the actual game. They are actually detrimental to your team winning, and they don't carry over from match to match. Store is ass, no cool skins, and no way to earn a reasonable skin through gameplay. No preview before buying either, and predatory store.
Yeaaaah this is a pretty big step backwards from coh2
why do I not get currency when I play in a match? Only the stupid challenges give currency, but playing the game does not. that's so silly. I prefer Company 2's system. feels terrible to play a 45 minute match and get nothing.
Pathetic but expected , just a fken dmbed down mobile version of the second game 😂
CoH3 is basically a remaster/remake of CoH1. which would kind of have been cool except I'm sick to death of CoH1 and was hoping for something fresh. The game is too stressful and not rewarding enough.
I'll give them credit for setting the game in Italy and North Africa. it's nice to play somewhere different. even if in skirmish and multiplayer I can't tell much difference to previous CoH games. I would have loved for a proper Italy faction, and not just a rejigged Panzer Elite with Italian units.
vehicle play feels hella sluggish compared to CoH2
I knew that the bullsh!t from CoH2 will be coming back. They should have just upgraded the old game and added new content to that.
Creative Assembly went a way better route with the Total War Warhammer trilogy. TWW3 had way more upgrades compares to TWW2 and almost all of the older content is still relevant and playable in the newest entry. I pay for quality content, graphics, art and design, animations, music, mechanics et cetera. However, I do not pay for pointless skins in a mediocre game. Just lazy af.
I wanted to buy this game , but just the fact that a store exists in a PAID game with those battlebonds instantly turns me off.
