      I caught that too and you’re the first reactor to also catch that (even if it was after). I mean this is just something insanely special so the story is first and foremost thing to concentrate on so I love rewatching it and catching everything. The thing that impresses me beyond that is the skill required to actually pulling this off to this level is incredible. I’m always impressed that even when he stops and talks on the phone, the Patrick section, and then in violet’s tale the knocking on the door and Stevie’s interaction with her, he speaks KEEPING the beat of the song going. 👌🏻

    When you listen to it again it adds another level to the song because you pick up things with the benefit of hindsight, knowing details you didn’t know on first listen, for example
    You learn that because Jenny & Screech are twins, Jenny is therefore 14 years old, a detail unknown until the end and so you then think about the details and story of Jenny, I suspect most people will initially imagine that Jenny is an adult and maybe she is walking home from work, a walk she has done a thousand times before, she was dreaming of escaping, like adults do when they got a crappy job they don’t like, working all hours etc etc and she was wearing high heel shoes, so it paints a picture of an adult woman but when you know she is only 14 years old, that changes the whole picture.
    What is a 14 year old girl doing out late at night wearing high heeled shoes, she’s not old enough to work, she’s not old enough to be in clubs or bars and therefore walking home after a night on the tiles and she shouldn’t be old enough to be having thoughts and dreams about escaping.
    So now what picture does that paint, to me, the whole walking the streets late at night in high heeled shoes paints the picture that she is a child prostitute and she is dreaming of escaping the streets, clearly she has grown up in the system and not every child who grows up in the system ends up in a stable home with a good family and so she is probably having to fend for herself in whatever care home she is in, the carers obviously don’t care if she is allowed out late at night at 14 and wearing clothes that require the high heels to match and so she has either gone into prostitution off her own back or more likely she has been groomed into by adults who take advantage of young girls who are vulnerable and often come up through the care system and don’t have anyone who cares for them, it makes her story so much more bleak and depressing and he gives you enough information to be able to fill in the blanks and give more meat to the story, the more you think about it, the more pieces of the puzzle that is Jenny’s story that you find.
    What isn’t said is left for you to discover for yourself, the more you put into the song as the listener, the more you get out of it

      @robmarar 7 місяців тому +8

      To reinforce your conclusions you can also look at what Screech say's at Patrick's door, "I left this laid lying on the floor", As we know Jenny is the same age Screech yet he see's her as older. Could it be because of the heavy makeup combined with being dressed in a older more provocative manner, plus combined with the high heeled shoes, you've got your answer. I'll also throw in one more indicator from Ren's writing that solidifies it, Sussex Gardens area in Paddington was known as one of the capital's most notorious red light districts around 2019 when Jenny was murdered.

    • @sarahholland2600

      oh. And every night he tuck her tight... father was a bastard.. history repeats itself.. And the silent girl got once again raped and beaten to death by a bastard. Devil comes two times. Tragedy or Miracle - the story of that repetition ends here.. (Sorry, more coherent maybe later if needed - the puzzle pieces are just rapidly moving into their places..)

    Oh man, I was so excited for your reaction to Violet's Tale and you did not disappoint! A lot of people miss the part about this being a story about the cycle of abuse. Those who do not completely understand the cycle of abuse and the cycle of poverty are the lucky ones because that means those things never touched them. They will never feel the constant fear or uncertainty. They will never be able to fully appreciate the hard work and sacrifice and tenacity it takes to break those cycles. My mother and her siblings grew up in poverty and abuse. My mother was determined to break that cycle and gave everything to achieve that goal. 3 of her siblings did not and that cycle has continued in the lives of my cousins and their children. My dad was abusive, which was devastating for my mother to learn, but she got out and took us with her. She died from cancer at age 40 so she never got to see that my siblings and I finished what she started and broke that cycle. The dark, ugly secrets in a family accumulate over generations and it can take multiple generations to find a way to heal and be better. It's so very hard but also unbelievably beautiful when you succeed. Loved your thoughts on this. Much love and happiness to you and yours ❤

      I just want to say, that I know some people who never really broke from addiction because that was self medication from the extreme abuse they suffered but they did manage to break the cycle of physical and emotional abuse and neglect for their kids. So they weren't perfect and they beat themselves up about that but I would point out that what they achieved despite what they went through, that many cannot achieve and doom their kids to, they did. They managed despite all odds to jump the highest hurdle and that cycle is now broken, forever.

      But this world is filled with so much hatred, disrespect, biases, propaganda, tribalism, egoism, greed, power hunger, divisive worldviews and parting religions, a unwill to change perspective, that we already fail Humanity.

    Definitely. Ren's stories are nuanced. This is a tale of generational trauma told with genius and compassion. I think you might appreciate watching Sick Boi next. It's quite different, a more traditional music video with a driving beat, and interesting lyrics about Ren's personal health struggles. There is also a Sick Boi part 2, which you could put together with it. If you want something a bit more lighthearted I'd recommend the Love Music series or Power.

    One tiny detail I find absolutely incredible for Ren to have added in (again, by inference only; he doesn't ever address it in the lyrics):
    - Violet says "please let my baby stay alive" and the lyrics Ren typed out to pin in the comments is the same - "baby stay alive"
    Violet knew she was pregnant (we have no serious indication she didn't) but she had no idea she was carrying twins instead of a single child. She'd had no prenatal care - many (most?) people who are carrying multiples find out at the first (ie, very early on) appointment, when the doctor or nurse locates the fetal heartbeat. Even for however many times that first examination only catches one heartbeat, one of the main reasons ultrasounds are STANDARD early pregnancy procedures is to catch all instances where there's more than one fetus because those are automatically higher-risk pregnancies - higher incidence of complications & preterm birth whenever there's more than one fetus.
    Even in instances when an abuser doesn't explicitly prevent their victim from seeking medical care (so that evidence of their abuse isn't uncovered and/or so that their victim isn't offered support to leave them), DA victims sometimes choose to avoid it anyway, if they're not ready to deal with a situation where medical providers might confront them with the evidence of the abuse & try to convince them to get help/leave.
    It's such a tiny detail, but it speaks so loudly about the dynamics in abusive relationships... and it speaks so loudly about Ren understanding that those dynamics exist.
    Because "please let my babies stay alive" is a homophone sentence for "please let my baby stay alive" ... if he hadn't meant to indicate the above -
    ("Violet was under so much psychological strain that she didn't even go for basic prenatal care/Stevie was so abusive that he didn't even let Violet get basic prenatal care")
    - he could *easily* have just written the obvious "please let my babies stay alive" lyric and ANYONE who heard the song for the first time, their brain would automatically hear "please let my baby stay alive" and the shock of there being twins would still land on you at his big reveal. He didn't. He had the only words that come directly from Violet's mouth through the entire song, be words that indicate she thinks she's carrying one baby.
    It hits me every time I watch the video.

    • @TheCharlieSmithChannel
      @TheCharlieSmithChannel  7 місяців тому +9

      WOOOOOOOOOW! Shit, you're absolutely right. I mean I clocked she didn't know she had twins must missed the deeper implication on that one. Amazing! Thank you so much for pointing that out ❤️

      I was aware of the specific use of the singular, but had not contemplated the decision Ren made to write/sing it that way. I assumed it was to draw the twist to the very end. I also thought that the "s" from the word safe, following baby, almost gives him an "out when singing, but had not thought of the written side of it.

      Another unspoken bombshell that someone else picked up on is;
      Violet met Stevie after she had been given her own flat, aged 16.
      The only way a 16 y.o. Will get a council property is if she is pregnant.
      So, in all likelihood, she is carrying her father's babies.
      The deeper you look, the more tragic the trilogy becomes.

    For better or worse, EVERYONE in the story is a victim and it's so rare for reactors to pick up on that.
    BTW,. "Hi Ren" should be your next reaction. It's been the jumping off point for most reactors and is the track that really got people's attention.
    After that, his work with Chinchilla (Chalk Outlines and, especially, How To Be Me) will give an even broader sense of his range.

    "statue she was turned to butter in her breath...." I take it to mean she went from frozen solid to she melted. The ending leaves so much to fill in but starts conversations ... about the care system, about abuse etc. IN this one you have to go back and listen again... because Jenny would have only been 14 and walking the streets in high heels... so she didn't exactly escape to a better life either. Ren doesn't shy away from the darker things in life and he makes it okay to talk about it.

Also I find it genius that when he gets to the part where the doctors must choose between the babies and violet's lives, there is a street intersection or split like if there are two ways to go, left and right, while the rest of the video is always filmed in a single street. Also a detail about Jenny's tale are the fact that some graffitis follow or illustrate what ren is saying... I wonder if they painted those for the video or if it jut a happy coincidence,

    It’s funny that Ren uses the expression “ A rising tide lifts all ships” to express how he wants his successes to be the rising tide. It was originally a phrase used by finance as the theory of ‘ trickle down economics - which is utter bullshit. Ren , unlike those who block / strike a reaction for copyright ($) reasons, dismisses those strikes because he know that it’s a symbiotic relationship. ( As you’ve seen in the Money Game - it’s a game that we all play, in varying degrees.
    Ren gave us these gifts and made many of us feel seen, understood, not so alone. And as is evidenced in the comment section we buoy each other.
    I love everything Ren has brought to this world. It is truly a better place with him in it.

    Excellent, so satisfying when someone “gets it” beyond the surface level of talent. You’re new to me, but immediately one of my favorite reactors. Ren’s storytelling, timing, his choice of words… he’s just phenomenal in every way. I love to watch people fall in love with him!

    Ha, you’re gonna love scratching this itch. Great reaction. The diversity of what is now ahead of you is just insane. I was introduced to Ren last December. Since then, if I’ve put music on for myself then it hasn’t been anyone else. Whether it be trick the fox, the big push, busking or just Ren himself. There is quite literally a song for every mood or emotion.

    2005 Violet's tale.
    Cycle of violence.
    Quite brilliant isn't Ren? He is a real treasure.
    Thanks for doing this. It is important to ponder on what got Stevie to the place he was too, you are right.
    This is my favourite too, but there are many close seconds.
    The Acoustic version of Murderer shows just how much he loves just playing around with music and voice. (Just one of many)

    I hate to admit this cause it makes me sound like a Stan, but I've probably seen 50+ youtube content creators react to this song, and I must say, that was by far one of, if not the best, post video synopsis's that I have yet to see. Not only did I appreciate your knowledge about social issues and the way genetic and environmental conditions during our upbringing can play such crucial roles in the person we become, but your way of conveying that point of view, and take on the video, was very descriptive and paints a clear picture, and did so in a timely manor, without sounding snobby or as if you were talking down to your viewers. Great job, cheers mate!!! Just subbed too.

    What a brilliant afterthought. Thank you so much. This world need people looking at the world with love, and a will to understand. This is an important and educating story about generational trauma, that is passed from a trauma survivor to their descendants and he (Ren) points out many of the markers that characterise the phenomenon. It sadly happens every day all over the world and it brings so much pain to so many people. I think he is telling it with such great respect to the "characters" in the story. It's poor Jenny, Screech dear boi, and silent Violet. We live in a world that put both shame and blame on the most fragile people. And today I can't help but wondering if the children of Palestine has a right to live. It is quite obvious that we follow like sheep. Or, as Ren put it in another song, "it's easier to blame, then turn the mirror at ourselves. And it is such a shame.

    I love that the more you let it percolate in your mind, the more detail surfaces.
    Firstly, Screech and Jenny were twins... so, she was also 14! And she's wandering the street at nights, regularly...so neither had a stable life it seems. Also... James (Screech) had the uncontrollable violent tendencies of his father, and Jenny had the same fear response as her mother, even though neither would have known either parent. This raises the balance of nurture (lost and passed around the care system) and nature (genetics and neurochemical predispositions) - capturing, simultaneously, both aspects of the intergenerational behaviour.
    I mean, that's mind blowing when you think about it.
    Both had a hole in their life... no mother, no father, no sense of belonging, probably passed around the care system doing untold damage to their sense of identity... but the particular way they each handle those painful (nurture) circumstances came, ultimately, down to genetic (nature) factors.
    Isn't it just outstanding just how much nuance Ren brings to these characters. Like everything he does, he makes it real... none of it is an afterthought, there always such incredible wisdom on display.

    Well done, a great reaction mate. Another thing I only recently noticed after many watches, is that when Stevie says 'Why are you such a liar Violet', does it indicate that the twins are not his but her fathers through being abused?

  • @fibienn250

    I’ve watched countless reactions to this trilogy and hands down, your breakdown of the lyrics is the most insightful of the lot.
    Ren is all about people drawing their own conclusions and says there are no right or wrong answers. However, I did see one interview where he talked about inter generational trauma and the almost inevitably of patterns of behaviour. Violet was silent; Jenny froze and couldn’t speak. Stevie was a violent murderer; Screech was a killer.
    The inspiration for this story was a newspaper article that Ren read. It was about a 13 yr old who killed someone. It got Ren thinking about what would lead a 13 yr old down that path.
