I am an old man who discovered Mink DeVille thanks to a friend who had just bought "Le chat bleu" (only LPs back then, early 1980's). I did not connect so soon with it but I did. Willy has been a lifetime musical companion from then on and I am glad to see videos of him, even after his departure, RIP. One of the real good / bad guys.
Almost exactly the same history as myself. A friend loved hunted down no one else had heard of and one night he played “Le chat blue”. I was hooked from then on. Brilliant album, amazing artist. I’ve loved his music ever since. Unfortunately I never got to see him live but now I can watch him live on UA-cam.

He absorbed so many influences, from Cajun to Spanish to R&B, and made something of his own. And such a moving singer. He also had a heroin problem and a sad personal life. He was only 58 when he died. But the music was so incredible.

Some in the band don't realize that and become bitter. Willy always had the best band. But Willy was the only one who had that amazing voice.
When I lived in NYC in the 80's I saw two concerts back to back. The first was The Rolling Stones in a huge stadium, distant, faceless, empty. The next night was Willy Deville at the intimate Bottom Line. One was a consumer product. Willy was the true artist.

In the early 80’s I saw a German TV registration of Willy at Rockpalast and I was flabbergasted how he is living the music. I had to wait until the mid 90’s to see him live in Eindhoven and it was stunning how he plays his music in entire simplicity. No distractions only Willy doing his music.
It was more than escaping NY which is where I was too on Mulberry St--couple of blocks from CBGBEES--it was escaping his insane girlfriend Toots--they gave new meaning to the French expression "folie a deux".

I saw Mink Deville play with my buddies Cap'n Swing (before they became the Cars) in Boston at the Rat a few times in mid 70s. Willie and his band was awewome, and played this great song and such cool music, so ahead of his time. Special times and those 2 bands made it even more so. And we partied hard.

He could have done Pirates of the Caribbean, the musical. Saw him live at some open air venue in Hollywood in maybe 74 or 75. It was a radio station promotion and free. First time hearing him and WOW was he great. One of those etched in your mind memories.
Sometimes the next tune on UA-cam just sorta rolls out without you knowing its coming and hits you between the eyes. This just happened, this is amazing.
