DDR3 1600 isn't really bottlenecking the FX CPU, the problem is the FX chip is bottlenecking itself and FX doesn't really scale with RAM at all.

Ok, look. I'm a bit of an AMD fan boy, so of course I am biased. But as someone who once owned an FX-8350, you really should have overclocked the 8320E. The base clock of the 8320E is 3.2GHz. On my FX-8350 the base clock was 4.0GHz. Even still, overclocking my FX-8350 to 4.5GHz, plus overclocking the HT and NB to 2.6, and running at least 1866 DDR3 really did help the frame rates, and this overclock is what I got on air! Overclocking FX CPUs is pretty much a necessity if you are going to realistically use one for modern gaming. I paired mine with a Vega 56 and it performed fairly well once overclocked. Another cool thing about AM3+ is that there are actually motherboards that support NVMe drives (e.g. the Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0), though the PCIe 2.0 bottleneck is still there. And you also get ECC support! I ended up going for 32GB of ECC DDR3 at 1866 MHz along with my overclock (which was 24hr stable through stress tests). I eventually replaced my SATA SSD with an Optane PCIe SSD, and now my nephew uses it as a gaming PC.

I upgraded to a new Ryzen 7 3700X a few months ago and in most cases it doubled my framerates. I never tried an OC though as at stock temps were crazy high but I do remember hearing they were amazing overclocking chips!

There were videos put up on youtube showcasing that the Ryzen 3 1200 @ 3.9Ghz was equal to the FX 8370. Once that video dropped, FX officially died in my eyes. It's not a good processor in any scenario because why would you buy an FX chip when you can just go out and grab a Sandy Bridge i7 for the same price? xD Seriously dude, nothing about FX is at all relevant today and this video proves it. Stop living in the past and pretending that FX can be anything more than a mediocre processor *at best.*

I can make my 9900k behave worse than a PIII and make a video of it if you like, don't believe everything you see online. Recommending Sandy Bridge i7 in 2019, I can tell you are a man who doesn't like security patches!

      @imglidinhere 4 роки тому

@@ickyconcrete5370 No, there's no way in hell you can make your 9900K run worse than a Pentium 3. Sorry but the architectural improvements alone would net you a 300% improvement at the dead minimum. Also, even with security patches, Sandy STILL beats out FX. That's the sad part.
The video is fine because it shows what everyone else has already proven to be true. The Ryzen processor at 4.3GHz is faster than an FX at 5GHz simply because of the architectural differences. What world do you live in that you think FX is at all more than a basic option on a dying/dead platform? My logic is that the Ryzen chip at stock settings doesn't *need* to go any higher because it's so far in superior that it's regularly doubling framerate. Even if the FX chip was overclocked to the maximum, it'd still be well below playable. Framerates don't show the real picture, frametimes DO.
No, it actually can't handle 60FPS in most games because my Ryzen 5 2600 only sometimes manages that. Also pairing it with a GPU that more appropriate for the time, like a 1660, or a 1060 since we're talking about budget constraints, would show my point more than ever really. The processor isn't good. It's just not. It never was, it's basically a Phenom II IPC processor in 2019. Stop acting like that's decent. This GPU is the most unrealistic part of this testing. No one that can afford a 2080 Ti will use FX over any processor today. If you think otherwise, that's dumb and you should re-educate yourself. :P

I'm currently in a somewhat similar situation, though, not nearly as bad. I've got a pretty dated system running a Core i7-4820K, with a GTX 1070 SC2. It's not horrible, but I definitely see the consistent spiking of my CPU. I'm hoping to catch some good deals throughout the holiday season. Regardless of the deals I find, there is a new build in my very near future. Might do an all AMD build and film it.
Another great video Greg. Keep up the good work.

    Hey!
I actually work as a computer seller and many of you would also think our prices are overpriced for used hardware. We might sell that system for roughly about the same price. When I started at the company, I thought the same. "Damn are we expensive, why are people buying at our place?". However with some insight you may understand (at least our) overpricing a little bit. So:
First of all before we even sell used hardware, we need to inspect it and clean it, with computers we normaly swap out harddrives etc... The guy/girl doing that needs time for that and also wants to feed his or her family. So we have to invest working hours to "refurbish" it.
We also do this because, secondly, (since i'm from germany) we have to give, even on used hardware, one year of warranty. We also gladly do that and normaly the hardware does not break.. however we have to calculate so that if it does, we have a little leeway.
Furthermore some of our used hardware we keep in store for years. If some other company runs maschines which only work with those pc parts, and they break down, we had them taking up our storagespace where we could have keept better selling parts for a long time. Storagespace is not free, and those costs should also be considered.
Lastly about windows: We sell it for full price. Yeah it is true, we could get it for 20-50€ of ebay or rakuten or whatever, but we have to garuantee it works. If the Key is not working we, once again have to invest time to return it to the seller / get a new one etc. Most of the times we have to pay extra. So we rather play it save and just sell official, sealed Keys. If our costumers ask us why we are selling windows for that price we tell them exactly that, and also tell them that we are more than happy to sell them the product without a windows key, so they can buy one somewhere else. We're not mad at them for that.
It's not like we have no leeway at all, so most our prices are on negotiating basis. But many people forgett, or don't know the before mentioned points. Some people also don't want to get technical and invest time to learn about computers and find good deals on them or do tinkering themselves. I mean I could theoretically learn how to fix my car myself, but I just have other things to do in my life so I bring my car to the workshop, and let it be fixed.
I hope some of you understand at least the prices of our company. My boss does not want to scam people, but he also wants (at least I hope he wants) to pay his employees and me fairly.

When I upgraded from my old FX-8320 (no E) to my actual Ryzen 5 1600 in 2017 it was a night and day difference. Even the Windows GUI felt smoother on Zen architecture not talking about applications and games. And I only have a R9 Nano. I bought the FX despite its flaws but I was ready to switch to Intel after more than 17 years of AMD only if the Zen CPUs hadn't been as great as they are. Now I'm glad I waited even if the 1st Ryzen Gen still had some issues. If you still run a Bulldozer/Piledriver CPU upgrade ASAP. It will feel like salvation.

I just upgraded from an FX 8350 to a Ryzen 3600x with an RX 5700 video card (X570, M.2, nice RAM, AIO liquid cooler and an SSD storage/game drive): OMG it is so quiet and fast! That being said, it is kinda cool that a 7 year-old system still ran modernish games at 1080P. I was initially worried that my computer was way too quiet and was probably going to need MOAR FANS so it didn't reach obscene temps. Now I'm thinking the 120mm case fan I relocated to the top of the case to accommodate the 280mm Corsair AIO cooler in the front is overkill. The 5700 sometimes cranks up a little, but is more like a white noise generator than a 747 spooling up and I gave up looking at temperature monitoring software because nothing gets terribly hot. Also amazed at how good cases have become (and so inexpensive). $65ish Phanteks case made it easy to do cable management (not a fanboi and I am sure there are better, but to me was a great value). Having not built up a desktop computer in over half a decade, I was pleasantly surprised at how easy it was. It just worked! My only gripe is that it is almost 2020 and there should be a standardized case to motherboard connection jack.

I like to correct you (maybe again or other youtuber) the 4 core 8 thread for bulldozer is a special case MS actually intentionally made a bulldozer patch (scheduler update (KB2645594)) for bulldozer based fx cpus as 4 core 8 thread so the task schedule could treated like smt or HT so not to put different work on same module witch would result in upto 50% performance penalty (on bulldozer most effective way was to change module count to 4m/4c from 4m/8c in the bios so it dedicated 1 core per each module and stopped the sharing, as if the cpu was loaded past 50% poor/inconsistent performance from games and applications can happen )
And as a second bulldozer patch (core parking scheduler update (KB2646060) ) when windows was loading up threads on any core but due to poor layout of bulldozer the power up from idle had to be done as module 1-2-3 and then 4 so if Windows puts work on module 4 the first 3 modules had to be fully powered up burning a lot of power and prevented the cpu from fully powering down
Useful reads about this anandtech goes into good detail on this
    www.anandtech.com/show/5448/the-bulldozer-scheduling-patch-tested
Windows 8 and 10 have the patch built into to correct module count as core + 2 logical threads per module for the older FX chips but not for the Type A cpus (even thought it should treat all type A and FX as based on there module count)
If the cpu is I believe piledriver based cpus it doesn't split up the "core assist" cores up on each module in windows (but personally it should)

I had a FX-8320@4.5GHz w/16GB 2133 C9 paired with a Vega 56 (Flashed to Vega 64, undervolted, overclocked and upgraded cooling) since Nov of 2012. It was generally always "enough" so i never upgraded it, despite it being a placeholder system that i picked up for a very good value at the time (really wanted a i7-3770k to delid and overclock to 5GHz). I JUST now finally upgraded my system to a 3700x w/16GB 3600 C16 (2x8GB single rank, so when i upgrade it will run faster with 4x8GB single rank sticks and not slower vs 4x8GB dual rank sticks) with the same Vega 56.
I didn't get nearly that bad frame rate (scores) in my tests and played Shadow of the Tomb Raider at around 45-60fps with the FX chip with "good" enough low 1% lows to never notice stutter. The FX chips at 4.4GHz+ and 1866 C7+ seam to really come alive compared to stock with 1600 ram.
CineBench (15/20) shows a 2.9-3.3x improvement right off the bat. CB15 went from 714 to 2075, CB20 went from 1393 to 4710. 3DMark Time Spy jumped from 6036 to 7558. But the reason i finally upgraded was because new games with PS5 and Xbox Series X in mind don't really like the old architecture of the FX chip's and older systems like the PS4/Xbox as seen with Cyberpunk 2077, which i noticed stuttering with but still playable. The real reason was because the CAD work i'm doing is starting to get intensive and sometimes started to really drag with the old CPU.

It wouldn't be as drastic as you exaggerate.

I'm thinking about getting an FX 6300, do you guys think it's worth it, or what else should I use, I'm trying to go for a bit of a budget

I'm using a FX 8150 with a RX 5700 XT I feel like I already get good performance at 1080p, I wonder how much it will improve when I get a R 3600 in two weeks!

Just picked one of these up from eBay for £25 to drop into my old, but still viable, sim racing rig (iRacing, & Assetto Corsa mainly). Should pair nicely with the 1050Ti I have in there and be a decent upgrade for my existing Phenom II X4 955 which does occasionally bog down - particularly in Assetto Corsa. I doubt those old game engines are going to make much use of 8 threads so I might disable 2 cores to reduce heat or give me a little more room for overclocking.

It would be interesting to see a comparison with an upgrade package (CPU, motherboard, RAM and GPU) that costs the same amount as the RTX2080Ti by itself.

Interesting video!! Alot of people are still running FX chips. New games still rely heavily on single core performance. We probably wont see more games taking advantage of multithread games till after PS5 comes out. Then maybe FX will find new leg at 4K?? probably not, and Ryzen is such a boost in performance and at a value price, it's just time to upgrade.

My combo AMD FX8370 on Asus Sabertooth R3.0 with Aorus RTX 2060 Super / 16GB 2400Mhz DDR3 ( Team Group ) / Crucial P1 M.2 SSD. My display is a samsung c43j890 with 3840 x 1200 pixel . This is a bit more then 2K and i can run all games @ Ultra with 60 FPS ( V-Sync ). @ the time of FX Intel was better but today Win10 and software utilizes the real eight cores even in four modules so great.

I would love to see an FX-8320 up against a Ryzen 3 in 1080p video editing. For what I do, editing UA-cam videos at 1080p, and sometimes even 4K renders, my 8320 with a 1060 does alright. It hates 3D renders such as 3D text or things like that though. Believe it or not, Roblox is where my 8320 really suffers. Roblox's optimzation for the client is bad and tries to load everything it can on the CPU, despite the fact that there is a GTX-1060 fully capable of reaching over 100 fps in all games on the platform.

I had a FX-8320 OC'd to 4.2GHz paired with a R9 290, and 32GB DDR3, along with a 990FXA-UD3--used to get similar results in games at 1080p. That's why I ultimately decided to retired it just over a year ago for a R2700X, GTX 1080 (just before the launch of the RTX cards, and price hikes), 64GB DDR4. I keep debating whether it's worth testing out my 2700X with the R9 290, and the even older HD7950 (which I still have in storage).
Other than that, I'm thinking about finding a purple case, throwing the old hardware in it, and giving it to my 8 y/o niece. She's basically copying and getting into the things that I am (tech, plastic models, gaming, music), and into some racing games as well as simulators--whether it's Euro Truck SImulator or Burnout Paradise. I always dreamed of having a PC at that age in the mid 90s. I guess you always try to give the next generation opportunities you yourself never had.

dunno, i have 8350 paired with RX 570 and 16Gb 1600 ram...and im really satisfied with overall performances in modern games. Not changing platform until CPU and MB dies, yes both in same time :)

Im rockin an 8350 paired with 1050ti on a 970 board. No real bottlenecks to speak of and it functions ok, but I still want to upg to Ryzen.

I'm still rocking a i7-2700k at 4.5Ghz with a GTX970 on a Asus P8Z68 Deluxe motherboard. Still getting decent frame rates in most games too. An upgrade is due, but with a limited budget. It really depends on the games you play. I tend to rock RTS and isometric ARPG type games that are CPU intensive. So the money would definitely be better placed on CPU/Motherboard/RAM, other than purchasing a new card. I'm drooling over the RTX2070Super but priorities first I guess.
