This video is about how to carry your kayak from the car to the water by yourself.
    Without risking an injury.
You may have heard that most kayak injuries happen while putting the kayak back on the car. No surprise here. Especially if I try to put it on this J rack by myself. That last little bit of lifting is brutal for the shoulders.
What if you like go paddling alone sometimes. Even if you don’t believe it’s safe, you may want to just get on the water and practice a few skills near the beach.
Why not be able to do it without injuring yourself.
    My solution…
    Forget the j rack.
    And make some wheels.
    A good set of wheels
I was looking at buying some wheels from the store, but I didn’t like any of the ones I found.
Here’s what’s missing with most of the wheels I see.
You can use them to roll the kayak around but you still need to take it off the wheels to get it up and down the car.
    That’s the hardest part.
Here’s what I like about these wheels.
    Based on ancient chinese wisdom.
“Keeping flexible is called strength” Tao Te Ching
You put them on before you take the kayak off the car.
They are close to the end, and high enough that the kayak doesn’t risk scratching or denting the car.
And the kayak doesn’t need to scrape the ground either.
Ok maybe I got the wheels a little bigger than needed.
I used what I had around the house.
    They’re very easy to make.
    You need 2 wheels.
A dowel to act as an axle.
4 8” long pieces of wood.
    And some bungee.
I had the bungee already. And the wood.
It works well with thicker bungee.
    And that’s it.
You drill a hole in the four pieces of wood. Bigger than the dowel.
    Put the axle through it.
The bungee holds it all in place, and acts as a bit of a cushion so you don’t scratch your kayak.
And the flexibility helps it mold to different kayak shapes.
There’s not much that can break.
Now you may be thinking “what if the beach access has logs in the way?” What I find is that if I’m willing to take my time, I can easily get over logs without having to lift the whole kayak.
If you know anyone who wants a j rack send them my way. I’m looking to get rid of this one.
I hope this video inspires you to stop carrying your kayak by yourself. It could save you from an injury.
    Keep your strength for paddling.
    Thanks for watching.

Well, friend, yours are among the best videos online for paddlesport. Your way of describing and demonstrating are "ace". Your values are more important to you than income. You share much with us, and we pay nothing. Giving a compliment now and again costs us nothing. Your photographer is of your same standard and we can see accurately and honestly, in an environment superb, the ease with which, or the effort with which you execute your moves. Your methods of presentation, to clarify what you're saying are excellent. I'm so glad that you have, that WE have, this record and that in so many years from now you children can relive the joy that obviously blesses your lifestyle. Congratulations and thanks, on behalf of the paddling community. Well done.

Nice inexpensive DIY set of wheels. I sold my kayak because my border collie does much better in inflatables. Plus, I'm 69 and although I still very active I have scaled back on some of my activities, e.g. no more rock climbing or down hill skiing. Saving the bod for hiking, biking, and paddling. But I still watch Paulo's videos because of the great information and teaching style.

I'm lucky. I'm 45 but I bodybuild. I can carry my 18 ft Impex outer island on my shoulder and press it over my head, even with it loaded. When I get even older, I will probably make my own cart to

Or just skip the car altogether, get some decent fat low-pressure wheels and hitch the whole thing to a bicycle. That's what I do with both my kayak and my tandem canoe anytime I don't need to travel more than 20 km over land. And it has an added benefit - paddling and pedaling each use a half of the core muscles, which makes the combination very healthy and comfortable. When I'm out for a workout, it's a complete one. If I overdo it on the road, I don't feel it on the water. If I overdo it on the water, I can still get home comfortably. No parking spot? No problem.

    Nice and clever!
Is there anywhere we can see how the four pieces of wood are tied together?

I don't think those wheels are too big, ideal for what you are doing.

I have a 65 lb Necky Elaho poly boat that I lift all the time by myself. I'm 6'4" and reasonably strong, so I just squat next to the side of the cockpit and pick it up onto my shoulder and walk it.

Greetings to the master of Eskimo coups ! I'm swinging in the Philippines and my kayak is tethered just above the water, but still thanks for the good video .

I'm with you on the j-racks, and both of my roof racks are much higher up than a car.
Sadly with the carts, one cart doesn't fit all, especially if they're loaded.

I use a J rack. I lift the boat onto my head to balance it with little effort and then pop it up like a weight lifter and kind of roll it onto the J hooks. It takes a little strength but manageable. I have noticed that in my 50s, my strength has decreased a bit, but it works for now. I definitely prefer a caddy or wheels to transport the kayaks to the water from the car.

Nice idea. I have a shoulder impingement, so this will allow me to not lift above my head onto a high rack on my pick-up truck. Thanks.
