Eli brings out the best In the wires. His sweet innocence makes them forget their own problems. Lindsey couldn’t be less happy to be forced to go to the dance but she goes out of her way to give Eli a good time. Later on Sam and the other geeks are depressed Maureen left them to hang with the popular kids yet warmly welcome Eli to join them for lunch.
lavalamp625 Glad to see someone else who agrees...I didn't discover this show until a week ago, watched it in 2 days and I'm still depressed I finished it lol
I remember watching it when it first aired and I was so mad when they canceled it so damn early. This show was brilliant and could have went much further.
I absolutely adore Lindsay dancing with Eli. And I love how much she is enjoying herself dancing with him in front of a big portion of the school. Gives me goosebumps. This is truly outstanding. And you won't see something like this in any other show. ❤💃
I love the smile on Rosso’s face when he sees her dancing with Eli. He forgets his frustrations with Lindsey leaving the mathleats after this reminder she is just like him: a free spirit with a big heart.
Talking about wrong place and wrong time, this show, in 1999, is the perfect example. So awesome, but got canceled because of idiots who couldn't appreciate this.
This scene captures both the awkwardness of youth as well as the inherent innocence/capacity for good at the same time....just a masterpiece of television.
This scene made me fall in love with the show. It's really sweet to me - I love how happy and carefree they look dancing. It makes me wish I went to high school in Michigan in the 80s. :/
i actually always love Millie dancing in this scene, she is always so nerdy and awkward and serious and uptight, but she looks so genuinely serene just vibing to the song.
@@leerogish7223 that probably would have been a really great storyline to. i can totally picture it because at the end of the day she is more of a follower than Lindsey is and is probably the type that what ever clique she aligns herself with she goes full steam ahead and is easily peer pressured. then of course Lindsey will be stuck trying to snap her head out of it. where did you hear that though, ive never seen any of them mention any of their plans for the future of the show.
@@newwavepop it was in a recent interview with the writers about s2. Honestly I’m glad they didn’t make it since all the storylines they wanted were very dark and a worst case scenario for many characters.
That awkward tension is so realistic. This was exactly how my first school dance was. I wish I would have known back then how important that time was to me and others.
I was starting my first year of high school which was a living hell. Then on Sept. 25th 1999 (my 15th birthday) this episode came on and life was a lot better.
The editing and directing in this scene is so good. At 00:45 when Lindsey looks over the dance floor it perfectly communicates the existential dread/emptiness she's feeling. Then when she looks to Sam and the camera cuts to him, it switches to his perspective from then on; they transitioned from two entirely separate storylines seamlessly. Its subtle things like this that make all the difference
I love so many things about this scene-how the music progresses and fits so well with the storyline here, Kim being intrigued by Lindsey and seeing her for the first time not as competition and maybe jealous but also impressed by her confidence, Rosso being touched by Lindsey & Eli dancing, Nick being off to the side looking so badly like he wants to dance but prob trying to keep up his image of the cool “Freak” so he resists joining in, Sam facing his preconceived notions and fears about dancing, etc! This show is brilliant, insightful, and touching! 🙌🏽💯✨
Just watched the series with my 12 year old daughter. She loved it almost as much as I do. A true gem of a show, rightfully considered one of the best shows in TV history.
I've just seen that Nick sneaked in and came to Homecoming. I never noticed that. How I love that show and all the details of all the wonderful characters. FREAKS AND GEEKS Y U NO LAST LONGER ?
I hated this song until I saw it paired with this scene. It's beautifully done and as soon as Eli and Lindsay start dancing I get chills everywhere for some reason
As a high-school teacher and a member of the class of 1985, I can state with confidence that--more than any other TV show in history--"Freaks and Geeks" `nails what it meant to be a teenager in a particular time and a particular place.
I was thirteen, when this show came out. I can't say how much it got me through. Here's to all the Freaks & Geeks out there. Happiness doesn't come in a box.
This scene gets me EVERY time like a little bitch. I can't help it. Also, the genius of it is they let the entire song play prominently for the whole scene. Brilliant.
This show was incredible, and this particular scene is one of the best endings to a pilot or episode of a television series ever! It's brilliant on so many levels. It should be used in classes for scriptwriting.
Beautiful, beautiful scene, as a high school kid of the late 70's and as awkward as Sam, this one always gets to me and gives me the biggest smile...such a tremendous show...love it!
What's so impressive about this scene to me, is that it is the final scene of the PILOT while it has the same emotional vibe as what we could expect from a final episode. It's able to immerge us in this very honest and awkward highschool situation in only 40 minutes so that we REALLY feel in phase with its extremely well written characters Thx again freaks and geeks, one of the best show I've ever watched
"Come Sail Away" is a weird song to dance to, because it starts out slow, then about halfway through, it speeds up to a fast-driving rocker (and I'm not a huge Styx fan)
My goodness Linda Cardellini has a radiant smile. Thankfully I was a little taller than Sam but his experience is mine exactly. My freshman year was 80-81. Awkwardly dancing to late 70s rock. I think F.A.G. may have suffered the same fate as Once and Again. Too real, so real it hurt to watch it.
One of my favorite scenes from one of my favorite shows of all time. Thank you for posting! I have this on DVD and Blu Ray, but I still enjoy checking out these clips on UA-cam when I can. It's just such a real scene!
I programmed my VCR to record the series premiere then went out for my Saturday night of partying. Watched it the next morning. Got hooked on the show as a result of this scene. These characters were my generation.
This reminds me of the episode on "The Wonder Years" where Kevin and Winnie are looking for each other at a school dance. I can't help but laugh at crazy Millie swaying by herself to the music.LOL
That pained look Sam gets on his face for a moment when the music changes - like he wishes he was anywhere but there - is painful to watch. But what great acting from someone so young!
literally the best show of what highschool was. a bunch of awkward lame things that you go thru with your friends trying to figure out what life is like
I just watched the pilot episode again, and I still can't believe this show only lasted one season. It was one of the best things on TV in '99 and '00. 👍

DreamsofRevelry yesss, i don’t know how people didn’t notice that. i mean watching it on tv or on your full screen it was pretty obvious unless the people watching were deeply focused on the people dancing.
Even though I'm a woman, I can identify with Sam in this scene in every way possible. Just like in this show, I grew up and went to high school in 1980 in suburban Detroit. I had the biggest crush on a boy named Eric. In 9th grade, we had a school dance where they set up this thing where names would be picked out of a hat (one for boys and one for girls) and each couple picked would slow dance together for one song. My best friend rigged it where I would end up dancing with my crush Eric. I was so nervous as we danced. I remember him feeling kind of sweaty. Who ever picked the song to slow dance to picked a bad one because we danced to The Chain by Fleetwood Mac. Just like in this scene, the song starts off slow and then suddenly gets fast. It was so awkward, trying to look cool transforming from slow dance to fast. Everyone eventually gave up and walked off, including me and my crush. I knew, watching this scene that the song Come Sail Away was about to get a faster tempo. Poor Sam. What happened with me and Eric? Not much. I crushed on him all through 9th grade, then by 10th grade my crush faded away and moved onto someone else. His timing was bad when he tried to kiss me at a party the beginning of 10th grade. Too late Eric.
Like another comment said, for some reason THIS scene was the moment the show clicked for me. Before this, it had some fun scenes and some scenes that really hit home and reminded me of my middle and high school years. But this scene, I don't know what it is about it but it's what made me want to watch the rest of the show. Maybe it's the song, maybe it's how wholesome this is, I have no clue
One of the greatest shows ever.
