Well they actually did do an Abba cover- I'm a Marrionette on the Infestissumam album - which is actually an awesome cover... I don't like many covers but this one was sick.
I just saw Ghost (with Volbeat ant Twin Temple) last Wednesday night - the 5th time I've seen them. Ghost is built to be an arena rock band - Tobias draws influences from SO MANY genres and eras - but as time has gone on, and the songwriting has become more "polished," so to speak, they have lost a bit of that "gloomy" sound - not completely, mind you, but to broaden their appeal. If you want to hear something from the same band with a RADICALLY different sound - I recommend "Con Clavi Con Dio" from their first album. You'll be able to hear how the music has evolved.
Massively agree to con clavi here, and as a bass player, i love playing it too. Ghuleh/Zombie Queen would be nice to see too, my intro to the band afterall and still my fav.
Some of the songs off Impera have the gloomy/dread vibe in spades. Watcher in the Sky and the very last track especially. Plus, the final chorus on “Little Sunshine” definitely sounded menacing.
@@tehherpderp7007 Let them live there! I discovered them in September (2022) and I am smitten in a way that is hard to describe. Mind you, I'm a 56 year old man who should be past this behavior. I am not. Papa won't let me be.
I'm a sucker for Forge's songwriting: catchy as hell, very effective and clever but not overdone - get's the dopamine going. And it's been like this since the very beginning of Ghost- Opus Eponymous despite having distinctly different atmosphere and much less polished production has songs like Elizabeth and Ritual that just make you want to hum along with them and seamlessly worm their way to your brain. I loved your analysis, made me pay attention to things I haven't noticed at first, huge thanks :)
*Klas Åhlund* produced this song/album ( _Impera_ ). I scanned the comments and didn't notice whether anyone had yet replied to this inquiry. He also produced Ghost's 2016 release _Meliora._ P.S. Incredible analysis!
This is a reaction worth watching! Amazing analysis, man! Good job! And Ghost is a really well produced band with a storyline full of sarcasm and good humor. I hope to see another Ghost reactions here.
they are very much a love hate band for people, i think generally tobias voice isnt for some, i personally think they are the most refreshing and intersting rock band in the last ten years combining elements of pop with 80s rock and doom metal
Composer/ vocalist/ bandleader Tobias Forge is a brilliant arranger. Add to the mix producer Klas Ahlund (who also produced their Grammy winning album Meliora) and it's an unstoppable force. Oddly enough, Ahlund is best known for working with artists like Katy Perry, Kesha, Usher & Kylie Minogue.
They cover a Roky Ericsson song “If you have Ghosts” that’s pretty awesome. You should take a look at some of the acoustic jam sessions they have up on UA-cam, the nameless ghouls are pretty damn talented. I’ve loved ghost for a long time 🖤
Wow, the thing that you listen without interrupting is so refreshing and good. I love to see genuine reactions like this, without too much interaction, and then to fill it up with intelligent comments afterwards. More of this kind! Not just from Ghost (which I love to see/hear) but any band.
I teach a HS course (Contemporary History through Film), and one of the films I use is an old VH-1 movie "Warning: Parental Advisory" Great to work in the first amendment issues of something that they can relate to in their own lives. We finish the year with them having to rewrite Billy Joel's "We didn't start the fire" with lyrics from 2000 to the present day. (I'm a big fan of "From the Pinnacle to the Pit". Love the opening bass on that one.
Oh my goodness sir, you have found an immediate fan in me - I have a degree in music (that I never use), but I feel like I’ve learned an entire course in music analysis from you in one video - you are a joy to learn from. Subscribed! I’m also an American that is Irish, so it’s wonderful to hear you speak ☘️ ❤️ And you nailed the reason why I love Ghost - their music makes my ears so happy and I love to sing along with them 🤩
You absolutely nailed it. The songs SEEMS to be simple, but the simplicity on the tiny details, show us that a VERY TALENTED composer is behind of this masterpiece. The mixing, the vocals, the lyrics, the theatrical part (not analysed) make Ghost and Tobias a very welcomed novelty on metal... Thank you
Loved this reaction and the analysis part. They have really developed and changed style in their different albums. I kind of like that they are in and out of progression, would be cool to see you react on of their instrumental track, such as "Miasma". Or as the more hit-friendly ones as some people already mentioned "Square Hammer", "Year Zero" and "Ciricie". You found yourself a new subscriber.
You nailed the analysis. I had to listen to it a dozen times to pick up all the interesting sounds. You did it in one play. Lol. You're definitely right, the production is great. First time I heard of Ghost was the song Cirice. Awsome tune!!!
"Is there a better use of the word Mephistopheles?" Aaaand subscribed haha. Thank you for giving this such a thorough review! You're crazy talented! Glad I found your channel! Give all of Ghost a listen, they are a happy place of mine for sure.
Glad I found this channel! Your song before the reaction made me think “how has he not heard Ghost before?! The vibe is similar!” I’m unhealthily obsessed with Tobias. His brain is insane. LOVE Impera. I hope you check out more of his song!💀❤️
I've watched probably 5 or 6 reaction videos for this song tonight (yeah, no life) and the reactions were as different as the people giving them, but I've been looking for someone who can express and pick apart a tune and point out the details. I know what I hear and catch many of those things myself, but a knowledgeable point of view from someone can sometimes help me catch a little bit more. I absolutely don't like every or even most Ghost tunes, but there are a small handful that really stand out. Like this one, the others I like seem simple, but there's a lot actually going on. You're spot on with the headphone recommendation. Subscribed.
The album version has a spicy Adams family thing going on (once) before the first verse. It also repeats the chorus at the end which I find is needed. It's also here on UA-cam. Also, the Omen style singing/music over the demon's name in the chorus "Meph-es-toph-el-es" adds that spooky feel to it.
Catching up on videos today. I'm glad you checked out Ghost! I've been a fan for a long time. Like many comments and you yourself said, they blend old and new so well. I love the use of the organ sounds in every song as well. They're really fun to see live also. Great showman. In fact, there is an ongoing story with Tobias as the lead in the band. You'd have to go back but it pokes fun at themes of Catholicism and it just adds another element. I know many people think it's cheesey and don't understand why they're popular, but the art all around is fantastic. Visuals, sonically pleasing, and theater thrown in as well. I also wouldn't be surprised if someone very well-known engineered this. All the nameless ghouls are said to be really famous musicians that tour with the band for a while and then are replaced with someone else famous. Cool band for sure.
Thanks for such a wonderfully detailed analysis. Most of the guitar work including I think all the solos on this album was performed by Fredrik Akesson from Opeth. Would love to see you analyze Cirice by Ghost as well, it's one of their best and most popular songs 😀👍
I was hoping you would get to ghost at some point 😁 Tobias Forge is the mastermind and only actual "member" of ghost, doing all the writing and about 90% of the studio instrument playing, and his identity was actually unknown publicly until just before the release of their last album. He has said that he considers himself a fan of music, not a musician, and that he creates music for people who obsess over bands and songs the way that he does. As a music theory nerd and obsessive listener myself, I hear that big time. He'll talk for hours about his favorite bands and producers, and you caught quite a few of them. I have to recommend their epic "Square Hammer" and "Rats." Anyhow, I really enjoyed hearing your thoughts and informed musical analysis, and I'm heading over to the patreon now. 👍🤘
Tobias Forge is the primary author of the majority of Ghost's music but he has worked with a litany of co-writers. The Prequelle album has co-writing credits on every or almost every song, for example. He isn't the auteur some think he is but there's nothing wrong with that either.
Good shout! Awaiting the new album - tough to put it up there with some of their most awesome songs with such a huge catalogue but wets the musical tongue for the new album at least! A band that has an image but can back it up with great playing and live performing. The dark image and lyrics but the hooks of a catchy song and the dark side of it kind of is more subtle!
First time hearing this, all I can think is 80s rock ballad indeed. Ghost was one of those bands I skipped, but I guess I need to listen to more of them.
Best reaction so far💖 You really know what to Listen for. The breakig down of the drums made me realize How good of a drummer Mountain is So want you to react to all of their songs💖
Wow, I find a lot of reviewers turn down the volume and it takes away from the song. Listening through my headset was incredible, on top of that, one of my favorite Ghost songs, thank you. You have engineered some terrific sound quality that matches or beats the quality of the original video. Well done and I appreciate your review.
Great reaction an analysis. I have a similar response to Ghost in that they make me smile. They are so talented. Borrowing from the past, but not sounding dated. I think they were striving for a "Black Album" vibe on this production. Huge sounding, "pop" but not selling out. Ghost is really one main guy who works with studio talent to create the recordings, and tours with a full live band. Check out Cirice (which this song has some similarities with), Rats (very 80's metal - think Dio/Ozzy), or Dance Macabre (which is "ABBA metal"). Ghose are from Sweden after all.
I just found your channel today. Brilliant analysis! you really break down the song and make us lay people aware of what goes into it. One of the best reaction youtubes ever. Subscribed. 😎👍
Well done. I subscribed because of all the reaction channels on YT, you are the one who seems to have structured the concept the best... short intro, play the song, have a (quiet) physical reaction to it, then slice & dice the song for analysis. Too many "first-time" reactors press pause every 5 secs to speak, sometimes not rewinding and completely losing the flow, (or stopping it right at a crucial musical part/transition), or talk/yell over the top of it, completely destroying the very vibe they are trying to find. You seem to give us the best of both worlds.
I love the "We Will Rock You" Queen easter egg beat the song breaks into briefly, then goes back to the song's continued back beat. It was pointed out to me and if you like the song and listen to it occasionally, can't be unheard lol.
Welcome and good luck on your Ghost journey!! There's a lot of bangers on the way! Cirice and Square Hammer are probs they're most famous songs, so usually people get introduced to them by hearing those two. Though Ghost have a wide range of music from lighter stuff (it slaps) to heavier songs like Mummy dust (still fucking slaps). Also, absolutely love your accent!
I've loved Ghost for years, and your analysis was great to listen to! Your use of the word "cinematic" to describe their music is spot on. They are great via headphones, but absolutely stellar *live*. So much pomp and showmanship. If you're looking for more tracks to react to, I'd suggest "Cirice", "Square Hammer", "He Is", and "Bible".
Really enjoyed your view on this track. I also (like your friend) saw them supporting Metallica, and was equally blown away. Their stage shows are very slick, but not without their humour (duelling guitars at the beginning of Cirice for example) and they are 100% pure entertainment. Just a brilliant concept of a band, and Tobias is a modern musical hero 👍🏻
I've liked this band since the debut and really glad they have achieved success. I first saw them live in 2011 and I described them as Blue Oyster Cult in frocks. Saw them on the second album and third. Their third album is their pinnacle for me so far. Haven't seen them live since they became an arena headliner, but I bet it's quite an experience.
Some parts of the song have been cut for the music video so be sure to listen to the full thing at some point. Like the intro and solo are both cut in half for instance.
I was going to say that Ghost is basically a modern glam metal band but then you essentially said just that as soon as the song ended. :} Their last album, Prequelle, was right up there with the very best of the glam metal era so I'm very keen to check out their new album when it drops. My tastes these days sway towards the heavily progressive but Ghost manages to reinvigorate my (still very alive) love of Def Leppard, Winger, and Extreme. PS. Their most brain-worm song, imo, is RATS!
@Sumaleth You are soooo right about RATS. It’s a brain worm for sure! Not my favorite song by them but, man! It’s sticks with you forever after jamming it 😆🖤
Yes thats usually the reaction with Ghost. "Um this is ok...." then "well thats not bad its pretty good" then its "Call Me Little Sunshine" hahahaha i love it.
Glad that you mention them sounding really simple but actually they're not, definitely... That has to be intentional too, if you check out some of their earlier songs there are some very proggy bits weaved in with stadium rock, catchy hooks and all sorts of quirky takes on existing genres etc... Weird and interesting band that can make seemingly any genre of music they like. And the yes the production is absolutely top tier. Especially love their use of the kazoo 🤔😂
You need to hear their acoustic performance of guleh.... And jiggolo... Especially as you mentioned a song being able to be reduced back to a couple guitars and vocal... You owe it to yourself dude.
Hey man, brilliant analysis, really enjoyed it. Subscribed! I'll be really interested if you check out more Ghost, it is a rabbit hole worth falling into. Try Square Hammer, Hunters Moon, Cirice, Rats, Year Zero, etc. IMO this band is easily one of the best to come along in the past 10 years or so.
Ah Ghost is so catchy it's just easy to listen to & bop along with but some clever writing. Danse Macabre is a great example. Lol my Aussie $ would get bugger all in the way of support 🤣 I'm on a giving group on Facebook & I just kinda skip over the Americans & stick to the south east Asian asks lol. Ok so now almost finished watching the reaction - I love how happy this made you! Yeah the Ghost onion layers are epic.
You are SO correct, about the layers, drums, guitar work, BUT you MISSED a HUGE element of the song: the BASS! Turn UP the bass on your headphones and LISTEN to what the BASS does to the song!!!! I play guitar and keys, but the BASS caught my attention on THIS song! I might’ve passed the song by had it not been for the BASS, and how it drives the song - it IS as HUGE as the driving drums (IF not MORE!)
Ghost is so good! Here in France nobody knows them, very upsetting! And I'm into prog and some extreme metal and sometimes simple is the most sophisticated indeed. In my regular playlist this song is after Dream Theater - the count of Tuscany and it doesn't bother my ears, at all!

Check out Cirice (which this song has some similarities with), Rats (very 80's metal - think Dio/Ozzy), or Dance Macabre (which is "ABBA metal"). Ghose are from Sweden after all.
Totally with you on those comments! Thank you!
A really decent music reaction. I love it ❤
I just found your channel today. Brilliant analysis! you really break down the song and make us lay people aware of what goes into it. One of the best reaction youtubes ever.
Subscribed. 😎👍
Cheers dude, very kind of you to say! 🤘
To clarify the key issue, Ghost ALWAYS plays their instruments in D standard, so that's a reason why a couple of their songs are in G
Good call - Having that A string dropped to G makes more sense!
Thank you! I don’t always have the time to film in this format, but I agree, I think it always works best. Cheers!
I love the "We Will Rock You" Queen easter egg beat the song breaks into briefly, then goes back to the song's continued back beat.
It was pointed out to me and if you like the song and listen to it occasionally, can't be unheard lol.
Absolutely brilliant analysis! You've earned yourself a subscriber, sir. Can't wait for more Ghost reactions! 👀
Please please do more ghost!!! Your analysis is so fun
Great reaction! Please do more Ghost 🙏
Ghost has a bunch of proggy songs, I definitely recommend Absolution and Spirit!
And Miasma! Ugh I would weep if I ever got to hear it live. Just orgasmic.
@@emmadobbins694 I got to hear Miasma live, and it WAS, in-fact, orgasmic! Papa Nihil came out to play the sax solo 🤩
Great reaction mate got you my subscription!
Great reaction, highly professional.
This was great! You go to the production details which is just awsome, been watching few of these and you are up there man. Job well done!
Your review was EXCELLENT!!! For that, subbed!!! This is a great and interesting channel! Thank you!!
Appreciate your kindness and enthusiasm! Thank you! 😊🤘
Just Yes!!’ Keepin it simple is the key to success.
"Their third album is their pinnacle for me so far."
Well played! 😂
Great review/reaction. It's a brilliant song.
Wow man youve picked out some things that others have not. Well done!
This is an epic reaction sir. thank you.
Listen to the spotify version and you'll get a longer solo :) otherwise yah, love your analysis!
You are right with tm Def Leppard ... I will add that after a few seconds I felt the 80s, the atmosphere of Kansas and Chicago
PLEASE do more Ghost! Cirice next?
Some parts of the song have been cut for the music video so be sure to listen to the full thing at some point. Like the intro and solo are both cut in half for instance.
Never be surprised to hear organ in a Ghost song. Be surprised when you 'don't' hear it.
Really liked this analysis. Maybe do a full reaction to their new album? Would be amazing
Hey… It’s been 1 year… More Ghost, please!!! 😭
And The Sweet are also involved 😆😅😍
It’s sticks with you forever after jamming it 😆🖤
This song (and I presume the rest of the new album out 3/11) was produced by Klas Åhlund - he's done a lot of their stuff.
You are wonderful!
Starting in G is a Beatles trick
Give months later, I WOW the same thing, but forgot that I had lol 😂
Would love to see some more stuff from their new album!
best reaction sir 🤩👏
They just dropped a small, 20-minute live stream of them performing a few songs off the new record. Maybe you could react to the VOD.
Yes thats usually the reaction with Ghost. "Um this is ok...." then "well thats not bad its pretty good" then its "Call Me Little Sunshine" hahahaha i love it.
Love it ,subscribed
You owe it to yourself dude.
awesome that you liked the song. You should react to a song from their first album next! I recommend Ritual.
The hi-hats on the intro remind me of Fast Car by Tracy Chapman!
Great reaction
The studio (album) version of call me little sunshine is even better because there are some riff expansions and te solo is longer.
That's exactly it! Sometimes we just need something well crafted and catchy - this one ticked the boxes well!
There isn't as much of it on this album, but if you go back to their earlier stuff, I think you'll find a lot in common with Blue Öyster Cult.
I understand you are an Opeth fan. Mikael Åkerfeldt is playing Nylon strongs on Ghosts track Helvetesfonster. Very Opethy track
Amazing Tune. Would be great if you could analyse Cirice also by Ghost
Please check out Evergrey of you havent checked them out before, they are awsome!!!!!
tool has released there new version of opiate.. just thought id give ya tinkle
