It's standard procedure to take off the nozzle lol. Also go slower with self shielded and you can have a longer wire length if needed

I wouldn't be tacking it, instead running a straight drag weld and you trapped slag inside the weld by not cleaning the slag off of the last tack before starting again. Turn the wire speed up a bit and slowly drag the contact tip along a straight line at a consistent distance to get better results.

Get a sleeve designed for flux core if u ever decide to use that welder for mig the gas won’t come out as well causing porosity
