What Emotions can you give? Jennifer (in this): One. Seriously this song works because of the emotional levels it goes through, and Griz isn't interesting just because she's sad; it's because she still holds her head high and tries to hold on to her pride and what dignity she can muster, even when seen as worse than garbage, and desperately holds to the hope that tomorrow will be better, clings to it, and it's what keeps her going through the days. She's not sad or angry that in the morning this will also be a memory, she's wistful and almost happy about it, because while her good days are sadly just a memory, her bad days will be one as well, all the bad will be a memory once she pushes through it, and maybe this next day will be the day things are good, she just has to push on till she gets there. She doesn't blame them or get angry at them for her circumstances. All she wants is a connection to someone, someone to acknowledge she's alive, that even a single touch would bring her true happiness, as it's all she wants. Her pride makes it hard for her to deal with how she's so low and just wants even the slightest affection, struggling to get past her own pride through the song and her then putting it down is what makes those final moments so powerful and the whole song so compelling. Jennifer said in an interview that she had never seen the show or heard of the song before she was asked to audition for the part. And I really believe that. With the stage show, from the very beginning there are very loose guidelines to how to build your character, and while they do tend to be similar to the ones that came before them, ever character is given three words that are the core of who they are. Hooper wanted another Anne Hathaway sobs while singing the big emotional showstopper and gets all the attention moment. He stripped the emotional levels there too by changing it after Lovely Ladies rather than before right after she's fired, and truly still holds on to that dream that it will end up ok, before life breaks her down the rest of the way. But at least he put that in new context, he just wanted memory to be super sad and crying. She has killed it in so many other roles, this is just not one that really fit her nor did she do the character work for it other than "she's sad, and belts." For other songs it could be a compelling emotional song and performance, but it's not right for memory.
I heard Simon Cowell wasn't impressed by her American Idol audition. She responded by winning an Oscar. I was emotional before she uttered a note here. Amazing talent.
Yes!!! Why aren't more people talking about this!!! In the original she wasn't touched at all, and when the young cats would reach out the would be pushed away by the elders. She can never be Elaine paige..and Elaine can never do what She does. Why is there a need to compare? The movie was a disaster but Jennifer did justice to this song..She didnt copy Elaine, she made it her own and i love it.
Jennifer made this song her own just like she did in Dreamgirls and the songs And I am Telling You I’m Not Going and I Am Changing. She has a way of making great musical songs her own.
Agreed. Jennifer always amazes me how she can give a brand new approach with her own signature from a song. I absolutely love her version of Let it be (from the fundraiser for the earthquake in Haiti) but it doesn’t take anything away from the Beatles (obviously). If you never hear her version, look it up, I promise you won’t be disappointed.
She literally isn’t supposed to be touched until the song ends...like that’s the total point of the whole show AND SHES TOUCHED MUTLIPLE TIMES IN THE MOVIE BEFORE THS SONG WTF
@@NoahB-gj5fg I watched Sideways video three times already too. I love his videos. I never watched Cats (the movie or the musical). But I have the feeling that thanks to him, I really understood what the musical is all about. :)
The only explanation I can find (and it is really stupid) is that Victoria is not a Jellicle Cat in the movie, so her touching Grizabella doesn't count? I haven't seen the movie, so maybe I'm wrong.
Honestly, THIS is the only part in the movie I stand by. They didn't change the musical number and kept it the same, yet added a powerful voice and instrumental to give ya that emotional punch.
In spite of Hooper sabotaging her That said, there were a few other decent parts, like skimbleshanks, which was lead by an actual professional dancer and probably was using a clicktrack because that's what dancers do.
How does the "touch me" part work at all when she is literally touched and lifted from the floor by another character seconds before that part of the song? Or even that she is led into the scene? The original intent was that she was so rejected that no one would ever make physical contact with her as much as she desires love and acceptance. The expanded role of Victoria fucks all this up entirely.
This song got me crying because I imagined all of the other street cats that used to lived as someone's pet in a nice warm house. I bet they'd sing this song 😭
@@KingMaltheo She's an undeniable highlight but in the interest of giving credit where credit is due, another cast member who impressed me was Francesca Hayward's Victoria! Like her singing isn't the best but it's more than passable and her acting here is quite good especially considering it's her first role. Her singing was very in character, the way Victoria starts off her bit part here. "Sunlight through the trees in summer" line she sounds genuinely desperate to help but by the "endless masquerading her eyes and tone are dripping with this awkward uncertainty if this is how to go about assisting Grizzabella without making it worse, ultimately Victoria deciding it's right course with her last sung line being soothing. Rebel and Josh though were both disasters with Rebel's acting completely ruining the film for me! Edit!: Seriously, those two each personally subtracted a letter grade from my final opinion! without their fingerprints, I would easily give this movie a very generous grade of a Low B, or at my absolute harshest a mid to high C.
That’s just how she is you gotta make every moment count you don’t know how she was feeling in the moment playing such a iconic role that’s nerve racking
No, I could hear her pretty clearly. And the orchestra does need to be heard, it's not just some background stuff you can ignore with this kind of song. Though I'll agree with Bowman C, she's both way too healthy sounding and looking. Elaine Page somehow nailed it.
@@natir1893 You gotta admit that the instrumental is way too loud when the song's climax come, we cannot hear Hudson's performance during this moment while we can hear her properly during the rest of the song...
@@Vousie no, the point of this scene is grizabella screaming "touch me". Which loses it's meaning when victoria literally just did that. She didnt have to finish the song.
This pieces hits harder when you are a cats lover. The part "If you touch me you'll understand what happiness is" totally makes sense for me whenever I pet/ cuddle with my cats I can tell they feel comfortable and happy by their contented purr. Much respect and admiration to the songwriters who appear to be cat lovers/ owners as well for putting in such precious lines in beautiful melody of "Memory"
I think she means if they actually gave her a chance and touched her (metaphorically) they would see how she used to be happy and could be again but that’s just the way I see it. Doubt it was written in that way given her characters personality and story line are nothing about having an owner and feeling love lol
Jennifer Hudson killed it...Though I wish the costume had been designed differently...It’s my understanding that Grizabella’s coat is meant to be tattered and Dirty and here it isn’t..
@@Cookiefight69 the original Gizabella is old and dying and has done some unforgivable things so the rest of the cats hold a grudge and this song was her cry for help because she didn't wanna die old, hated and ultimately forgotten. Hence memories
Lindsay Ellis said she saw this movie twice in theaters with a bunch of people who were obviously seeing it ironically and howling the whole time through, except for this number, when they were all like, "Oh, okay, this just got serious."
1998 version is pretty amazing; and this one, I just kept getting distracted by the uncanny ears. Didn't see the whole thing, but ick. Plus, while the movie audio is good, it's more... whiny than Broadway, and that's without liking Cats on Broadway.
@@shannonbutler-williams7261 In the context of the entire film, one is more likely to have become slightly acclimated to the ears, at least enough to appreciate Hudson's performance. But I agree that Elaine Paige in the 1998 version is unbeatable.
@@andrewkohler3707 It's more a like "I know people who like this, but..." view since there are Broadway performances I'm willing to give up a crazy amount of cash for a third view, view and then the movie grabbed what people already didn't love, and stuck it in the uncanny valley.
Pardon my "French" but despite the many things about the Cats film that didn't quite work, this performance of "Memory" by the esteemed Jennifer Hudson is just f*cking brilliant. And, in this respect -- and with no disrespect of Ms. Buckley's or Ms. Page's performances -- how beautiful it is to view over the decades how a classic song as this can find new interpretations.
It's not brilliant, it's boring as hell, she didn't even really starting singing until 4 minutes in!!! She was just standing there singing quietly and crying like 90% of the time.
It's a weaker version than either... because the orchestra is terrible. Which isn't their fault either actually, it's Tom Hooper's. Listen to Hudson's live version, it's so much better.
@@OverIt822 What's wrong with her facial expressions? She's also acting and singing for a feature film which is inherently different than performing the song on a stage. It doesn't make Jennifer's version less good though lol.
If you close your eyes and take away the visual and listen carefully, the pain and emotion with each lyric of this iconic song. It makes watching this bearable
Well she does sob too much yet sound not sad enough, not cynical enough, and very much not withering. I don’t know about you but when I close my eyes, I hear an impressive young singer singing to her full capacity due to the great healthcare that she earned with her great lung capacity/strength. Not a withering old cat approaching her sad and lonely end.
I just listened to the older version and compared it to this, and I don’t hear withering in her voice either. They’re both beautifully sad, and emotional. Hearing the cracks between Jennifer’s singing felt more genuine to me than being able to sing a song, when you’re in pain, straight through with few hints of tears. I know when I tried singing after someone I had loved dearly had passed I had difficulty choking back the tears, so this version was easier for me to feel her pain, hurt and sadness. You don’t necessarily have to be old to be worn, tattered and reminiscent of how things once were. Depression alone can make you feel that way. And if you’re depressed long enough, it’ll tear away at you, even if you’re young. Especially when no one is there who wants you around or willing to support you.
i don't know about you two. Elaine and JHud are two different individuals, sure will definitely sound different. One is old and one is young. Both singing style is different too. So stop comparing with your withering and ailing sound that you are saying. Appreciate both artists. Both did outstanding job singing this masterpiece.
@@bowmanc.7439 CAUSE HOOPER RUINED HER RUBATO! So instead of conveying more emotion and personalizing the song, it just sounds artificial. I will never forgive Hooper for what he has done to musical theatre.
I feel what it's like to be homeless and in the brink of despair feeling forgotten when I hear her version. It is the real deal. She embodies that cat that you see that has lived a rough existence or human and it breaks my heart. She humanized this song better than any other in my opinion. 🤗
She was a glamour cat that left the fold..she came back later and was forever shunned. She is now older and her beauty faded. She is alone with just memories of what happiness was. Then she is welcomed back... I think this grizzilla character really represents the cycle of life... And how we are alone when we die.. And in this passing over she finds happiness once again
Because it did suck. When she sang “youre gonna love me” in dreamgirls every person could FEEL it and she made it sincere and believable. Much like how Elaine Page would sing memory and she wore funny makeup and costume yet she made you feel every lyric. Hudson bombed at this. This is the worst I’ve ever heard her vocals because she was cry-crying during the song. And because of that, it wasn’t sincere, I didn’t believe the emotion, and I felt nothing but anger at how that beautiful song was being ruined. Whoever gave her that direction is an idiot. It was horrible.
I thought no one did Memory better than Ellen Page until I saw Jennifer Hudson and how she embodied the life of a 🐈 that lived the streets just wanting to wanted. It broke my ❤️ the sadness & loneliness in her eyes. I have been this cat. Not only do we treats cats this way but we do this to each other as if being treated with dignity is conditional esp when you are discarded for being old. I cant stop crying over dear Jennifer & how she must have been reliving the horrific murder of 3 of her family members. I pray God helps heal her heart. As for me To live your life not looking forward to the next feeling alone and forgotten is a feeling I know. So please be kind...you never know what someone is living with in their broken 💔.
There. I saw "Memory". I got chills, just like I always do. I think Jennifer Hudson nailed it. The best five minutes of the entire movie. I know Cats fairly well, I've listened to all the albums, I've seen it on stage, I saw the 1998 adaptation, I just now saw the only good part of the 2019 movie, I can now move on.
That's the thing though, she didn't nail it, the orchestra was working against her. Yet it was still great. I really wish there's been a competent director for this movie. Her live version is just so much better.
When I watched this in the movie theater this part really hit me I balled my eyes out with no shame and I’m crying right bow just listening to her sing this song Jennifer Hudson did fantastic portraying the emotion needed
The first time I sas the trailer for this, my mom and I were at the movies to see Last Christmas. Her voice, when she sings "Touch me, it's so easy to leave me", the power and beauty her voice had instantly made me cry. The sound of someone's voice alone has never made me cry before. And that's why I love this and I love musicals and Broadway and all of that. Because the singers voices can bring tears to my eyes and I'm so in love with music. I'm so in love with this.
I have seen and heard this sung soo many times, by soo many folks. BUT- This rendition is the first time that I felt the words and the pain within the words. This is the first time this song - this version - had me in tears.
It is a fantastically emotional rendition. Held back somewhat by the cgi and the fact that in the scene just before it Rebel Wilson is zipping out of her skin.
The basic plot is that these cats are singing to audition to be the next one to die and be reborn into a better life (Jellicle choice they call it). Jennifer Hudson's cat, Grizabella, is a cat who was banished from the pack years ago and now she is sick and old and dying. She isn't looking to be the Jellicle Choice with this song, she's just asking to be invited back into the pack. Hence all the tears and sad music.
Memory, turn your face to the moonlight Let your memory leave you Open up, enter me If you find there, the meaning of what happiness is Then a new life will begin Memory, all alone in the moonlight I can smile at the old days I was beautiful then I remember the time I knew what happiness was Let the memory live again Burnt out ends of smokey days The stale, cold smell of morning The streetlamp dies, another night is over Another day is dawning Daylight, I must wait for the sunrise I must think of a new life And I mustn't give in When the dawn comes, tonight will be a memory too And a new day will begin Sunlight through the trees in summer Endless masquerading Like a flower, as the dawn is breaking The memory is fading Touch me, it's so easy to leave me All alone with the memory Of my days in the sun If you touch me, you'll understand what happiness is Look, a new day has begun
This song is actually a really powerful depiction of a severe depression mindset (if one is open to acknowledge that). Shocking to me that Jennifer got any criticism because that was a PHENOMENAL performance. If you have a problem with the visuals, just close your damn eyes.

Jennifer, you were so wonderful with this song . . . artistic and creative it was beautiful! I love you and thank you for making music, you're so inspirational to hear!!!
Perfectly adapted for the big screen. Not seen the film in its entirety, but this was sung with control and pain and a powerful plea at the end. Anyone who has suffered deeply will empathize here with this forlorn character.... Lost and alone and searching... And forever hoping.
Painful, yes. Starved? No. Withering? No. Old? No. About to die? Far from it. She sounds like she has the lung to breath another 80 years Therefore a great performance on its own but not within the context of the story.
d_a_n_y check out Elaine Paige performing the same song. She doesn’t cry or shout, just whisper what sounds like the last monologue of a tortured cynical soul.
Nah, Hooper was on a warpath to work against every theme in the movie, so having her get touched in the middle of it where touching is about acceptance and what she was longing for... ruins it. Not to mention the orchestration didn't work at all. Hudson and all the other great talents in this movie deserved so much better.
I have never seen cats. Not this version or any other. This performance made me weep. It is powerful and raw and I can feel everything they are re trying to convey.
Cure Kiara I heard this was intentional on Webber’s part. Jemima was originally played by his ex-wife Sarah Brightman. This wouldn’t be the first time he wrote out a character that Brightman originally played (see Christina’s fate from Phantom of the Opera’s sequel).
Can't be compared with any stage production, she is able to explore so many other options that are just not available to someone on stage. And damn, does she explore them. Buckley is still my favorite, but Jennifer is definitely on par, just a different medium.
I always think of my cat when I hear this song. She was rescued as an abandoned small kitten and she has never fully been trustful of humans. Most of the days she keeps to herself with a stoic look on her face, but every now and then she lets me pet her and it means everything.

I hate how much unnecessary comparison there is the musical world, just learn to appreciate artistic differences 😤 geez 🙄
Very true..
But Patty Ferrel blows them both out of the water
@Natalie Abila I know, I was just joking... I still agree with the initial message about not comparing
I really think the lyrical climax of “touch me” is undermined by her being helped up. In the Play version she isn’t touched until after the song ends

Honestly, THIS is the only part in the movie I stand by. They didn't change the musical number and kept it the same, yet added a powerful voice and instrumental to give ya that emotional punch.
In spite of Hooper sabotaging her
That said, there were a few other decent parts, like skimbleshanks, which was lead by an actual professional dancer and probably was using a clicktrack because that's what dancers do.
They changed Jemima's part to Victoria which completely up roots the whole meaning of the play.

@@KingMaltheo From what I've heard of the play, that character does the same there too. The rest is filler lol.
@@KingMaltheo She's an undeniable highlight but in the interest of giving credit where credit is due,
another cast member who impressed me was Francesca Hayward's Victoria!

1998 version is pretty amazing; and this one, I just kept getting distracted by the uncanny ears. Didn't see the whole thing, but ick. Plus, while the movie audio is good, it's more... whiny than Broadway, and that's without liking Cats on Broadway.

Pardon my "French" but despite the many things about the Cats film that didn't quite work, this performance of "Memory" by the esteemed Jennifer Hudson is just f*cking brilliant.

And I mustn't give in
