The Real Meaning of the Fourth of July

  • Traditionally, the Fourth of July is a day for fireworks and cookouts. But we should take the time to also appreciate the deeper meaning of Independence Day. The founding of the United States of America was an unprecedented achievement of enormous moral and practical significance. America was the first and only nation founded on the idea that your life belongs, not to a king, or to the pope, or to the state, but to you, to pursue your values, your happiness. The Founders believed it was the government's job to protect this right. On July 4, we celebrate the Founders' vision of the sovereign individual who is free to live by his own independent judgment and to pursue his own life and happiness. From the Ayn Rand Institute, I'm Yaron Brook.

Why do I need a government to give me rights or freedom?

Somalia has a weak government, and in it's place we get ruthless warlords. In the end there will always be a ruler of one kind or the other. "No government" is awesome for jihadi forces or any other ambitious well-armed group.

Rights are inalienable, they exist within each of us.
They cannot be given, only taken away.
You can say that come from god. God given..
I don't believe that though. They are natural. They exist whether god does or doesn't. They exist no matter what someone's interpretation of god may be as well. And they exist no matter who's god is in charge. (This will come into play as the Muslim population rapidly grows.) My Rights don't come from any god. My Right to speak freely is MINE.
My Right to a fair trial is MINE.
My Right to own and carry firearms is MINE. My Right to own my own property is MINE.
Without government some can protect their Rights, but others can't.
      Think about that.
I'm anti government, but SOME unfortunately seems like a necessity.
"Let no more be said of confidence in man, but to bind him down from mischief by the chains of the Constitution." ~TJ
That same Constitution that the radical left is going to call racist very soon, and ask for it to be destroyed.

The government doesn’t give or take away your *basic* freedoms, you are born with those rights and if your government doesn’t respect them, then you have the power to change the government, that’s the beauty of living in the USA, unlike other countries, certain rights and liberties are guaranteed to be protected under the US Constitution like speech, religion, gun ownership, and other things.

"Is the USA really the land of the free any longer". Are you making progress, or have other countries surpassed the ideals you have now abandoned in favour of creeping authoritarianism?

@@xyork It's a process. I remember Jordan Peterson amidst an angry mob, shouting him down and someone off video saying something about how terrible it was and his response was, "well we don't know if this is the good news or the bad, time will tell." I'm not saying it feels good to have the ideologically possessed Mayor's(like the one of the city I live in), saying, "protest as long as you want however you want," at the beginning of a night filled with looting and burning. And then having to call for the national guard. But how else do people learn unless they try their hand at their beliefs and realize laws and infrastructure have value? I don't know the answer. But until you are faced with your flaws, how do you understand what changes are necessary?

I'm glad I grew up in a household that respected individualism and liberty. The more the world does that, the better. The holiday is worth celebrating, even by people in other nations around the world. The people shocked by this video are the types for whom individualism is a dirty word, yet individualism is the only fundamental principle to fight both slavery and racism. They would likely have defended slavery had they lived in those times, and given how much they would defend regulation and confiscatory taxation, it can be argued that they still defend involuntary servitude. Good people are spiritually American, regardless where and when they lived or whatever party they may endorse, for their respect for rights keeps them on good standing with their neighbors and makes respect between individuals possible. America was and is far from perfect, to be sure, but America's detractors are much farther from perfect.

The 4th of July isn't about "finding" this land. It is about celebrating winning our independence from a tyrannical government. A government that was trying to conquer the world in those days.
Would you rather be ruled by a King? Or rule yourself?
      Yes, there were natives here.
Yes, they were treated terrible at times and even slaughtered by our own government.
You think it would've been different if England ruled here instead? They were slaughtering people across the globe.
THIS was a new beginning. A hope for individual freedom. It's been a constant battle, but it's been indefinitely better and changed the whole world!!
You can't change the ugly history of the past..
This is OUR land now. All of us, from all across the globe..or do you just want everyone to go back where they came from? Lol
Unfortunately, we're about to enter possibly the biggest and worst battle for individual Liberty in history. Because everything this country was founded on is being destroyed right before your eyes.

In 1776 as the United States celebrated its independence from England, African-Americans, as a people, ironically were not free.
Many of them fought against the British alongside the Caucasian people of this country in hopes of obtaining their freedom if they survived. Some did, some died, some never got their freedom.
This is the truth of the legacy of the Fourth of July. So there is no more fitting of a day to declare that "Black Lives Matter" than today, in commemoration of African-Americans being a big enough people to fight for a country that would not fight for them without other agendas.
Today those of us who are awake and aware remember our ancestors who fought and died so we could have the opportunities that we are supposed to have today.
So as we light our grills and our fireworks, safe and in our homes, we must never forget those who made this possible.
We must never forget because the struggle is not over. And for those who would turn back the clock on us, it is now time for our people to stand again, stronger, brighter and more unified than ever before.
It is time for the world to see how much your life matters. Have a great holiday.

The term cognitive dissonance applies to this ignorant presentation which ignores indigenous peoples and African Americas, why the term is used to describe the mental discomfort that results from holding two conflicting beliefs, values, or attitudes.
Critical race theory (CRT) is an academic movement of civil-rights scholars and activists in the United States who seek to critically examine U.S. law as it intersects with issues of race in the U.S. and to challenge mainstream American liberal approaches to racial justice.
Critical Race Theory (CRT), intellectual movement, and loosely organized framework of legal analysis based on the premise that race is not a natural, biologically grounded feature of physically distinct subgroups of human beings but a socially constructed (culturally invented) category that is used to oppress and exploit people of color. Critical race theorists hold that the law and legal institutions in the United States are inherently racist insofar as they function to create and maintain social, economic, and political inequalities between whites and nonwhites, especially African Americans.

My opinion opposes white supremacy and racism in all forms and disguises, and I say the following to the confused colonized mentality of the people who themselves have been misguided and miss-educated by colonialism.
Medieval Christians maintained an extremely complicated theological system that had determinant authority. A hierarchy of Popes, Cardinals, Archbishops, Bishops, Priests, Monks, Nuns, and missionaries maintained intellectual authority over the spiritual needs of medieval society made up of inward-looking, superstitious, illiterate, misguided, and oppressed Christian populations.
The proof……according to the World Council of Churches Executive Committee, (2012) “Statement of the doctrine of discovery and its enduring impact on Indigenous Peoples” the Church is now acknowledging and producing facts revealing the documented history of church institutions' involvement in the destruction of non-white humans globally as it has been advanced under the banner of Christianity’s version of human progress.
Roman Catholics and Anglicans understood sacrament to be a sign through which the man god they created could communicate his grace to church subjects, so they used mysterious language indistinguishable to the illiterate who could never make any distinction between the complicated theological system, the sacraments, and whether or not this information was coming from a corrupt human willing to manufacture “analogical sense” at will was actually responsible for determining the whims of “the Church known as a sacrament” articulated as from the Pope's edicts but taken in as though being the word of Allah (God).
