Even when you get a diploma from top conservatories like Juilliard or so, it’s also a very tiny chance that you can take musical performance as your formal career. As a conductor it’s even much harder. There are extremely limited positions available all over the world for young conductors to start their careers.
3 things to become a conductor. Talent (lots of people have that). Very hard work for years. (Not so many have that). Loads of luck. Very few people have that. Sheer luck, being in the right place at the right moment was how I got into the profession. Many people who were probably as good as me didn't make it.
Gregor (the blonde with the red shirt) got after the diploma the assistent of Simon Rattle.

Hello, are you a conductor? If yes, I want to ask you a few questions about it if that's okay with you.
Amazing!!!!! Way to go Jane!

Juilliard conducting program is my target now, but I'm still 14 years old. I've conducted my school orchestra once and hope to get more experience to apply for JUILLIARD. What can I do now?
The orchestral conducting program at Juilliard is a graduate-level degree, which means you need to have a bachelor's degree to apply. You are doing all of the right things! Keep studying music and your instrument (or instruments) and developing your skills as an overall musician.
So what should I take and where for my undergraduate degree?
There isn't a formula, but being a music major and mastering an instrument is a great start. You could study music at any conservatory, like Juilliard, or other colleges/universities that have excellent music programs.
The Juilliard School, will a diploma in piano performance allow me to take this course?
Hi Jordan -- you need an undergraduate degree (bachelor's or its equivalent) to be considered for any of the degrees in orchestral conducting. We offer master's, artist diplomas, and graduate diplomas in conducting, but they all have a prerequisite of undergraduate training. You can learn more here: www.juilliard.edu/music/orchestral-conducting. Or don't hesitate to contact the admissions department -- musicadmissions@juilliard.edu. They can answer all of your specific questions..
This is a dream!❤
Hello, are you a conductor? If yes, I want to ask you a few questions about it if that's okay with you.
I managed conductors for several years. I also have some conducting credits myself. This is all well and good but conductors who get jobs are picked because orchestras think a candidate is capable of building an orchestra. That doesn't happen by committee...it happens through leadership. You will rise in this industry if you can build an audience and a better orchestra.
Hello, are you a conductor? If yes, I want to ask you a few questions about it if that's okay with you.
@@blobodep6251 I've guest conducted. If I can help, go ahead and ask your questions.
Thx but can we talk somewhere else. Like discord or kik or anything of your choice?
I'll ask the questions in the comments anyways
1: Are there many conductors in the world? Is their number over 100000? I dont see many probably because my school didn't offer music classes. But my friends and family members who took music classes learned about the piano and violin, so I was wondering how low the number of conductors in the world are.
2: What is the most difficult thing about being a conductor? Is it finding a job or practicing? Or maybe it's some other thing I didn't think about.
3: How do conductors practice? Do they practice by conducting an orchestra only? Is there no other way to practice?
4: Is the number of people aspiring to be conductors decreasing?
How does one get into Juilliard for conducting?? What criteria is there to get into julliard for that? Are the students already there in a music program and learning to conduct is a component??
Conducting at Juilliard is a graduate-level program, so students have an undergraduate degree and some prior musical training. Our music admissions team (musicadmissions@juilliard.edu) will have more information about the specific application requirements. You can also learn more about the program on our website: www.juilliard.edu/music/orchestral-conducting.
Miss you Jane 😔 RIP
Do they only have 4 people in their program for conducting?
yes. 2 each year

@@Mauriziobarenboim do you think it's necessary to learn every instrument?
@@nagawarrior7817 I don’t think it’s necessary to learn every instrument, but piano is the best to learn for a foundation and then you can add other instruments if you’d like
I've done bachelor's degree in Mexico and have expirience conducting some little orchestras and chamber music, is that enough for taking this course?
Thank you for watching. I can't speak to your specific situation, but the master's degree and graduate diploma programs in orchestral conducting are designed for musicians with experience. You can read more about the application and audition procedures on our application module: www.juilliard.edu/#arm. Click on "Music" and then "Orchestral Conducting" and you can choose your degree program. If you have specific questions, you can also email our admissions team: musicadmissions@juilliard.edu. Do you pay your musicians or is it part of the curriculum for all students to participate in the orchestra?
its all part of the curriculum.

About how many students apply to the orchestral conducting MM program a year?
Glenn Alexander II Its easier to apply to a conducting class and a regular college.
Harry potter has wand, conductors have their own 😍
Never been one before, but at an anime comic convention where I went there cosplaying as a conductor from an anime, I brought a chopstick as my baton. It's slightly shorter than a real baton and I didn't know where to get a real baton though. Plus, Asian metal chopsticks come in two so if I lost one I still have the other.

@@blobodep6251 Hi, idk if the q is for me but I'm not a conductor :)
Are you a musician or do you know about conducting?
Good show for them music is that!
Curtis also did Friday lab orchestra for the conducting majors. Curtis also allows it conducting majors to assist for subscription orchestra and opera performances (as well as conduct a piece on subscription orchestra performances). It's not as unique as Juilliard's video would suggest.
Rip Jane.
Arabic orchestras never use conductors. If you’ve ever seen a video of Umm Kulthum singing, the orchestra still keeps perfect sound and balance. Peace.
So, if I wanted to be a conductor. All I would have to do is switch my major to conducting, and they teach me how?
Juilliard has a separate conducting program that offers master's degrees, artist diplomas, and graduate diplomas. You can learn more about the program and application requirements on our website: www.juilliard.edu/music/orchestral-conducting.
Orchestral Conducting is something I have always dreamnt of but there is none to help me out or give me and advice. I wish some people would help me out.
I have a question, I already have my BA in music education, would the Masters or PhD program for orchestral conducting lead to a conducting job? and with more specifically, the PhD entitle people to be able to teach university?
Our conducting program offers either a Master of Music or an Artist Diploma. Our Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA) degree isn't specifically in conducting, but is part of the larger music division. Most of the students in our conducting program go on to have very successful conducting careers, so that is the main reason that people choose to attend Juilliard. I think the requirements to teach at a university depend on the organization and position, but generally some kind of advanced degree is required. Here is the link to learn more about conducting at Juilliard: www.juilliard.edu/degrees-programs/music/orchestral-conducting
Would your doctor of musical arts program qualify me to teach university level?
Cold German Beer lol...oh yeah..there's that.
OfficialMichellemarie 26 Most university professors will work their way up. Starting at a smaller liberal arts college, building your research or specialization body of work and then gradually moving up as newer jobs open. Insanely competitive. Jobs at the level you’re speaking of are few and far between, but definitely not impossible. Agree with other comments, your reputation matter much more than the degree.
