"Saturn's Rivers overflow with schools of frankincense and myrrh-maids: swimming scents of self to the soul and sphinxes, they swim in Saturn's rivers; drenching the waters with ancient magic and the secrets of the Saturn Sutra; secrets that could name the future and saturate the soul with stardust and samba of seasons untold. The future unfolds in Saturn's rivers, so i sailed my soul through the fore-thought of the forgotten and waded through windows of ohm." Insanely good!
How could anyone find anything to argue about in response to this groundbreaking display of poetic virtuosity? Just bask in its glow and praise Jah for creative geniuses like Saul Williams.
Still Love this poem like I'm hearing it for the 1st time. Was honored to see many live performances for the Niggy Tardust Album in NYC and wrote him a poem that I was so nervous to give to him 😂but I did~ he's so divinely inspired 🤩🪐✨💫
i saw him live....i shoved people aside to get closer...saul whilst wordsmithig accidentally spit on me the tiniest bit. I feel like it made me a better mammal.
There is a famous inscription on the statue of Michael Jordan in Chicago that reads: "The best there ever was. The best there ever will be." No one could ever be at fault for appropriating those words after witnessing Saul Williams in flight, either. Every bit as powerful as the first time I saw this years ago.
all type of realities. Nothing themind sees is an illusion, its something NEW one creates and it then becomes reality. As the first vision of chair, plane, kite, houses. THE MIND SEES THEN THE MAN CREATES.
I first this piece on Lyricist Lounge Vol 2. Opened my mind and writing to a new world. Perhaps I'm projecting my own memories onto it but I dig his writing during this era more than his new joints (Niggy/Volcanic). Seems more focused.
I also did, re-visiting this gem from one of my favorite compilation albums really gave a provocation of inspiration. His lines are so powerful and imaginative, I could easily see poets and the non-alike quote his words as a guide to the wisdom of thought.
@4oldskool This deserves a reply: Poetry is concrete. The more concrete the better."And the silken, sad, uncertain/Rustling of each purple curtain" "So much depends/on the red wheelbarrow/glazed with rainwater/beside the white chickens" (from memory) "And the yellow fog that rubs its back along the windowpane" "My pony gives his harness bells a shake" "I have walked out in rain and back in rain/I have looked down the saddest city lane" See? Concrete imagery is what it's all about.
Just because you don't understand it doesn't make it meaningless brother. It just makes it something that you don't understand. I understand it and I find it deep. I don't have to pretend!! But you are entitled to your opinion!!
The beat don't stop when soulless matter blows Into the cosmos trying to be stars The beat don't stop when, Earth sends out satellites To spy on Saturnites and control Mars wow
This speaks to the young people, they need to hear this instead of the bullshit on tv today. Peace and Love and Light brothers and sisters. We are one. :)
The best poetry is abstract? Who told you that? The best poetry is concrete. Good poetry gives you immediate images and emotions. It doesn't have to be easy, but it CAN'T be abstract. Abstraction needs prose, where you have time to go into the ramifications. Time is short in a poem. You can't waste it on big words and nebulous meanings. And you can't pretend any collection of words is poetry. That's the talk of someone who wants to call himself a poet without the skill or the years of study.
Every time i watch a saul williams part of me envies him because dear god, he speaks exactly how my own mind works and i wish i would have thought of this first
I can see where BarerMender MIGHT be coming from. I had a hard time with his beginning as well. The first 40 seconds do come across as a bunch of wordplay with no real meaning. There was a time when i would have judged him in that time frame & never let go of that judgement due to my ego. But as he went on, he dove into some fantastically deep material. I do like Rafael Casal's "ADD" which is very literal or even Shane Koyzcan who has a great blend of the two. But they are all great : )
i stumbled on to this and started to wonder why folks are attacking @BarerMender, let him keep his opinion. YET, at the same time it would make sense Mr. Mender to show some writings/performances exalting your opinion. the only "right" in poetry is structure and intent, aka the use of literary devices to present an idea for folks to pull an emotion from. (and even that feels limited.) again,i suggest he show us his greatest. &, sir/ma'am don't be disrespectful, i am qualified to say all this
@scualabamafan "It's not even abstract as history repeats itself and we are all as humans rooted in what has been experienced once and what will be repeated again." What does that even mean? The essence of poetry is that it must be concrete. And for everyone that asked, I'm not publishing my poetry in the comments section of a UA-cam video.
@scualabamafan "Poetry has predetermined boundaries." I don't know what you're trying to say, and I'm not sure you do either. I grant you, you have to do certain things to have poetry. It has to be rhythmic, for instance. But boundaries? What does that mean?
@monalisa02 Come to Central Florida and you can hear me perform. Let me know when you'll be here and I'll give you a venue. I won't be hanging my poetry on the internet for anyone to walk away with.
and don't forget e.e. cummings, one of the greatest modern poets, and one of my all time favorites. According to BarerMender, he doesn't count either, which makes me extremely irate.
Yes. His opinion that they should only be used in a spiritual context, never simply to get loaded, that it's an insult and a shame the way things like marijuana and LSD are used in partying context. An opinion I agree with.
Saul Williams needs to return to slam poetry. No one can bend reality with words like Williams can.
I do believe he is still out there bending reality.

Insanely good!
I was mind blown the first time I heard this man recite one of his masterpieces.
I am experiencing that right now.

my mind just splits when I hear this. So good.
no words to express your poetic master-peace
I still have to watch this every few months I love it so much
The best living poet, hands down!
2021 it still speaks to me
My all time favorite piece!
My favorite Saul Williams spoken word ❤
Pure genius...
blows me away...every time
"I drink moonshine on mars and mistake meteorites for stars cause' I can't hold my liquor"
Spilt my head open like stars burning out
i saw him live....i shoved people aside to get closer...saul whilst wordsmithig accidentally spit on me the tiniest bit.
I feel like it made me a better mammal.
Also he seems to reply to a lot of social media
you think he would want someone to idolise him to the point they feel blessed to be touched by some of said persons spit? I think not personally
For such an enlightened cat your kinda judgy.
Comedy, probably the hardest thing to write, being a whiny critic not so much.

As a poet he just blew my mind away!
I’m curious about what the poem is about, even though it sounded deep and dope as hell.
I recommend everybody to see his live show if you ever get the chance! Amazing! It always comes back to Poetry.

You feel good about that
Thank you for spitting truth I do not know.

Every time i watch a saul williams part of me envies him because dear god, he speaks exactly how my own mind works and i wish i would have thought of this first
That’s awesome it’s never to late to formulate I in your own style
It's not abstract, he is speaking truth. Do your research.
A semi-coded explanation of Black cosmology and metaphysics in 3 minutes...Remarkable.
he literately meditates while he performs...who is this martian?
blu man 100% can’t be said any better
blu man cool lil tidbit: I once tweeted that there’s no man I’d rather smoke a blunt with. He “liked” it. #williamsworld
Saul “The Prophet” Williams

AUM!!!
@BarerMender Music/art/poetry is a highly advanced language, what you call imagery is just a language you need to Rosetta stone.
Wow...
@scualabamafan "Poetry has predetermined boundaries." I don't know what you're trying to say, and I'm not sure you do either. I grant you, you have to do certain things to have poetry. It has to be rhythmic, for instance. But boundaries? What does that mean?

So this has nothing to do with electrical resistance?
@BarerMender please, listen again and pay attention, also let yourself go.
Saul Williams counts.
@dbecks51 Actually, it's under my head, but I see that it isn't under yours.
Brotha is gone...before our time

@mrnye66 HAHA that's so contradictory I can't even believe one would say such a thing
