  • Refilling a hydraulic jack or cylinder is pretty straightforward if you’ve got the right tool. I modified a funnel with a piece of silicone tubing. It took about 10 minutes but everything worked just fine after we were done.

I had not used my hoist for a while and it decided not to go up any distance. I figured that as I pumped the jack a vacuum was being formed inside the reservoir because of the rubber bung. I removed the bung and no problem - I think there should be a breather on the reservoir instead of the bung.

Thanks for the video. I have a Genie scissor lift. What type of hydronic fluid do I use? I am getting conflicting advice.

So I've added oil to mine but it still won't lift a load. It pumps and lifts without boom attached but not with. I've tried bleeding air but maybe I did it wrong or it could be bad seals inside? I got it without oil plug in it. Maybe debris or junk got in it?

how do you purge the air out of one? I heard that you must turn the valve to the OPEN position and then pump the jack a bunch of times and this will clear the air

yes, then you are supposed to leave the lower valve open and then release pressure out of the rubber plug on top, insert a small screwdriver on one side of the upper rubber plug, and pry it enough to allow air to escape without removing it. Close the bottom valve and then pump away.

Can you fill it while the jack is all the way extended out?

Do you have to have the lowering valve open when you fill the oil, or in the closed position?

As I recall the valve can be open or closed during filling.

Would it harm anything to rub this oil on the post to keep it from rusting?

I do this for one kept outside. The only issue can be if dirt sticks to it, it will. Shorten the life of the seal. I just wipe it down before use

can anyone answer this ( if i was to weld shut the fill hole on a long ram jack like the one in this video would it effect its functionality? )

yes thats how you bleed it. If you lost the rubber plug, I would tap it and find a small bolt to plug it.
