I just watched your video on suspending U.S. car insurance while still maintaining coverage in the U.S. to avoid penalties. I am in that exact situation as I will be moving and crossing the border on September 30th. I obtained my Mexican car insurance today, and suddenly all the other questions arose about having to keep Insurance up here in California… yikes😮 I have my temporary residency and don’t intend to take my car back until I am forced to by getting my permanent residency. My car is registered through August of 2025, and I don’t need to have it smogged next year, so I am considering just talking to my California agent for now, with thoughts of transferring the car to South Dakota at some future date? How is suspending your car insurance working for you? Is all still good with your original plan?

It's working out well. We have State Farm, and what they have done is basically put the car into a "storage" type policy. So every 6 months, State Farm issues a new policy term. We pay for 1 month of the term and suspend it. Essentially, we are paying for 2 months a year, and if we need to reinstate for an unplanned trip back to the US, we just call them and start regular payments again. When we planned this, we chose South Dakota for their history of RV users and expats who legally domiciled there in addition to their driver's license renewal process, their tax benefits, and their lack of annual vehicle inspections. I believe that Texas also had similar benefits at that time except they still required annual vehicular inspections - HOWEVER - I do believe that Texas has recently removed the annual inspections. So, whatever you decide to do, you may also want to take a look at Texas since it is closer to the border and may work out for you depending on your needs. ~Gina

@@GringosRUs thank you so much for your reply. I called ALLSTATE this morning, who I get my insurance through and told them the situation and the agent on the phone agreed that that can be done. They are going to reduce my coverage to minimal comprehensive coverage, and I understand that nothing is covered out of the country, they are going to refund me what I’ve already overpaid for the six months term since I was paying for high coverage. When it’s up for renewal, I will sign up for a monthly payment, pay the first month, and then suspend it again the information you presented in the video I referenced was invaluable for me. Since my vehicle is already registered through August 2025 and will not need to get another smog test until 2026, the Allstate policy in California should work out fine for me, and buy me time. But when the smog is due again in 2026 in order to re-register my car I’m going to need to, figure out potentially transferring the registration to another state, as you mentioned, potentially South Dakota or Texas. Do you have to develop a physical or mailing address in one of those states? There’s so much to learn, and I do wish that more UA-cam videos would talk about the subject. Thank you so much for talking about getting, then suspending car insurance in the U.S. on a continual basis in order to be able to re register and renew insurance in the U.S. without too many penalties. My car is only two years old and I understand they need to be eight years old in order to import them provided. I decide to stay that long. I will either need to renew my temporary residency which the lawyer says is a possibility, or return my car to the US after the four years is up of my current temporary residency. it’s a great car, and it will be worth importing it once the time comes, but if I end up taking it back to the US, I will need to make sure I did everything correctly, and kept it minimally insured. You are the only UA-cam site I saw covering the very subject. I was looking for more knowledge on. Thank You.

LOL, we try really hard to not disparage other channels. We love to talk up the ones that we like, but we were just using Jordan as an example of how UA-cam works in making money. Trust me, I know that he will post something every 6 months to keep getting the revenue from the heyday when it was him and Maddie. I would do the same thing if I was in his position. It is a good sized check that he is getting from them every month. Maybe not as big as it used to be, but still enough to keep him afloat there in Queretaro.
