How come I have never heard of this song before? When did it come out? Was it just a regional hit in the NorthWest area or something? Who recorded it first?
Southside Johnny’s 1979 album Hearts of Stone is as close you are gong to get to a “lost” Springsteen and the E Street Band album. Bruce wrote two songs on it the album and co-wrote a third. Little Steven produced and wrote or co-wrote every other song. Max played drums. In the late 80s, Rolling Stone ranked it as one of the 100 best albums of the previous 20 years.... and it didn’t even have the above song on it. Still, give it a listen... preferably in the order the songs appear on the original vinyl. It will knock your socks off. When you are done with that, then check out, Johnny’s first album, “I Don’t Want To Go Home”. The title song, written by Little Steven and as shown above is beyond awesome. It also contains two Springsteen songs including “The Fever”. At its high points, it is as good as “Hearts of Stone”, but for me, it has too much relatively mediocre filler. I have always been gobsmacked as to why Southside Johnny never blew up. I’ll gladly put his 10 best songs next to, say, Journey’s 10 best songs mano y mano. Yet, Journey’s in the rock and roll hall of fame and Johnny had to wait until 2017 to get into the New Jersey Music Hall of Fame. Something ain’t right there. I’ve heard rumors as to the reasons (everybody from New Jersey has at least one and usually several indirect connections to every other New Jerseyan so everybody has a second-person story or three about Bruce and Jon Bon Jovi and, yes, Southside Johnny), but, even if true, the stuff about Southside Johnny is garden variety rock and roll stuff, nothing beyond that and certainly nothing that would merit burying such awesome music.
Agree 100% with your assessment of the Jukes. What are the rumors you allude to-you can’t leave us hanging like this without some info on what you are referencing.
I went to this show with my dad, and I was the youngest one there.. enjoyed every minute of it
