RIP Wilbur D. Mosier, Lieutenant 93rd New York Infantry. Last seen by his men at the 2nd line of entrenchments with a captured Confederate flag in his hand. Wounded and captured on May 12, he died at the Confederate Receiving Hospital in Gordonsville a few days later and was buried by the Confederates with a wooden marker over his remains. His body was removed to the National Cemetery in Culpeper in the 1870’s where he rests beneath the flagpole to this very day.
William Hunter Peel, surgeon of the 19th MS, wrote that he found his brother, Albert Peel, Adjutant, 19th MS, on the battlefield. Albert was shot through the head, near the famous tree that was cut down by gunfire. This video says the Union handled the dead (a truce maybe?). I put Albert's diary online.

Must have been an awful experience for both sides. Being born in VA makes me a proud Southerner and wish we could have finished and won.
