This is backyard gardening in Virginia.
My brother built 2 - 4’ x 4’ raised garden beds last year in 2020. Luckily they were in line with each other. So I told him last year we could remove the sides and make one long cinder block raised garden bed and he would only need about 6 more cinder blocks to double his growing space. Going from 4’ x 8’ for two beds to 4’ x 16’ with one bed. We will also be leveling the raised garden bed and installing hardware cloth in the raised bed to keep out the moles and the voles. This is day 1 of the new build.
Supplies:
32 - 8” x 16” patio paver/stone
64 - 8” x 16” x 8” cinder block
2 rolls hardware cloth 4’ x 10’

About 3 years ago I had 4 cinder blocks in my yard I used to raise the wood for stacking. I used up all the wood, and turned them into planters for the summer. When fall comes, and I order my wood for the winters, I just stack up the wood on them. It’s worked out nicely!
Good idea using them as a planter, I like being able to use an item multiple ways
I love the preparation you took making this bed. That thing will last for ever. The extra time and money you put into it will pay off big time over the years. Great job. I also love the chipmunk voice over work. Gotta keep Chip and Dale working.
Thank you very much! My brother and I looked at different materials to build his raised bed and he settled on the cinder blocks. He has already talked about expanding into a new raised bed. 😆 our voices very chipmunk 🐿 like.

Thanks Adrian, it was a crazy two days. I even recorded on my GoPro too from a different angle. The new camera I recorded 116 minutes and around 2 hours on the GoPro. Problem is on my phone I could not get everything downloaded. So I will have part 2 / day 2 coming by next week when we fill it.

I prefer to line the entire bottom with the cap blocks. The wire clothe will rot after a few years and the critters will get in. The blocks won't rot and they are not water tight so drainage is not a problem.

Good tutorial, & you even put down hardware cloth which hopefully will slow down the voles & moles.

Love using cinder blocks for beds. Perfect little spaces for herbs or marigolds and nasturtiums.
I gave my brother a few flowers and herbs. The holes in the cinder block do give an extra place to grow. 😁

Great idea, using the blocks, ( light & easy to handle), & so good that these can be dismantled & moved to another position if you want to. I will try this in my garden in SW France. Thank you for sharing !
Thank you, one of the best parts for us is the blocks won’t rot like wood. So this should last for many, many, years. Numerous people also suggested planting herbs or flowers in the holes of the blocks. I wish you the best of luck!

No problem, hope it helps. I would definitely consider hardware cloth to put on the bottom to avoid moles and voles from digging under your bed. Well if you have any digging pests. It’s another expense but it does a great job. Good thing with this setup is you can use the holes in the cinder blocks as mini planters. We did not because this is at my brother’s house in Virginia and he has Bermuda grass and it grows wild and crazy. Any questions don’t hesitate to ask.

Cinder blocks make a great garden bed. Plus you don’t need to worry about it eventually rotting like wood.

I got a load of these hollow concrete blocks when I bought my house They are very heavy and strong but if I bought any new blocks would just buy the lightweight cinder.blocks. We call them Thermalite blocks in the UK. The hollow blocks are twice as wide and good where you may need to add rebar on say a retaining wall and you can soften the look with small herbs in soil in the holes if no timber to be included
Rob, thanks for the heads up on the lighter blocks. My brother wants to expand already. With this project we doubled his growing space and he realizes it still not enough space.

Last year I seen some vole damage in his yard. So I knew the hardware cloth would be a must.

I like your bed better than mine, I plant marigolds in ALL the pockets of the blocks, critters hate the smell. The other thing I did but will correct is that my bed is too wide, in my opinion 48 inches is too much.
Thanks Mike! I will let my brother know about the marigolds. He has voles, that’s why we put the hardware cloth underneath the bed. We put the paver blocks under the blocks because he has Bermuda grass and it grows crazy. The blocks should be 16” long so taking one out should make the bed around 32” wide. Have a great day Mike.

Great video. I am new to living here in Virginia. And I really hope this isn't going to be an entirely ridiculous question. But I am planning a new very large cinder block garden bed construction. I recently saw a new (to me) concrete product on the market. That I'm hoping will help make this process a lot easier. So would you happen to know anything about self leveling concrete? Can it be used in an outdoor application like this? If so, wouldn't that make this process so much easier? By using that, instead of painstakingly using all those base blocks to level? Could you just dug out the same base area dimensions. Then simply pour a layer of (appropriately prepared) self leveling concrete to height. Would love anyone's thoughts on if that is in any way possible.
Thanks for the great question. I am not sure about using the self leveling concrete. I would say that would be a great solution to digging and leveling the ground, I just don’t know if anything can leach out of that material. I will have to research it a bit, I will hopefully respond here in about a week. I will reach out to the master gardeners here in Delaware to see if they have any thoughts on it.
You guys did a lot of hard work unnecessarily I laid my blocks down in the pattern and I went back and I adjusted the few that were not level.. it was much easier

Great question, the size is 4’x16’ and 64 cinder blocks (stacked 2 high). This is sandy soil so that is why we went 2 high. You could make a single layer and it would be 32. One recommendation would be adding hardware cloth to the bottom like we did if you have moles or voles in your area. They burrow under the bed and eat the roots and kill your plants. You could have made 2 of them for the amount of brick you have only need 1 lay of brick.
True, I talked my brother out of trying to make them 3 blocks high.

Hardware cloth can be a little expensive, I used the extra for other projects. Built a sieve with extra wood from another project. Thanks for asking, have a good night. 😁

No I haven’t, thanks for asking. My brother built the first two raised beds the season before. I noticed they were in line with each other, I asked him how he lined them up and he said he just eyeballed it.
Probably best not to grow edible plants in these gardens though due to chemicals that could leak out of the cinderblock
Thanks for letting me know. These are actually concrete blocks. They can leach lime into the soil over time. So my brother will be performing yearly soil tests. Thanks again.

What are you growing?
This is at my brothers garden bed, he has kale, lettuce, spinach, broccoli, cauliflower, onion, garlic, peppers, tomatoes, beans, peas, carrots, turnips, beets, radishes, cucumbers, zucchini, and squash. He has harvested some of the greens root vegetables to plant the peppers, tomatoes, squash and zucchini.
I used the 6"×8"×16" blocks and couldnt match em up lol.
That's a shame that the would not line up properly, the blocks I used were 8"x8"x16"
Did you still try to use them, or did you do a raised garden bed another way?
@@GardeningwithBarchuckin yea i still used them, on one side one of the blocks was left overhanging and on the other side i happened to have a 6×8×6 block and used it there, so it worked out. This bed was built right at the property line and the overhang piece is on the side you cant see or accidently bump into.
