Oh jeez... Midir was my last DS3 boss and I spent almost an hour in tries. When I finally managed to defeat him first five seconds I didn't can understand what's happening, I was like "Did I won?" And of course Kitamura's music is SO EPIC!

I remain confused as to how facing him from the front is supposed to be the better idea but then folks show it as the valid strategy. What remains consistent are the sprites being kinda easy to dodge at least.

Attacking him on face does extra damage which is helpful for that large health bar

He has a ton of area clear attacks that are difficult or impossible to dodge while underneath him, and all his animations are tuned to telegraph attacks best from the front. Even if you didn't do bonus damage hitting him in the head, it would still be the "most correct" way to fight him in terms of minimizing risk.
