This is Frida, very much so in fact, but you're right that it sometimes can be difficult to tell the difference, as Frida can go quite high, and her voice can be as sharp and pointed as Agnetha's (e.g. check out her live delivery of Pat Benatar's 'Fire and Ice').

3:25 The softer "sexy narrating" voice was Frida. The more intense one was Agnetha.
(Note how Agnetha sings like a bluesy soprano saxophone at places.)

Frida fans need to calm down. Honestly. She wasn’t ‘overlooked’ afaik. Both she and Agnetha were loved equally in the 70s and, are equally loved, now.

But when you get the likes of Gary Barlow appearing on a mainstream TV documentary ('Agnetha, ABBA and After', 2013) raving about how 'SHE' (Agnetha) was the voice of ABBA, (and Bjorn and Benny practically agreeing with him on the same programme), and when you have many other people lazily referring to Agnetha as the band's lead vocalist it's hard not to think that the populace is very biased towards Agnetha. Unfairly so, IMHO, as I, and many other fans, genuinely prefer Frida's velvety tones to Agnetha's often shrill voice, beautiful though it is.

    • @FaithnSin
      @FaithnSin 3 роки тому +3

Shrill? 🤣 Ok. I hate Gary Barlow so I never saw his duet with Agnetha. I still haven’t! Nor did I see the show you’re referring to. All I can tell you what I experienced growing up in ABBA obsessed Australia and that is: the girls were equally adored. And still are.

    • @Emmenem68

@@synchronicityman9062 Those comments by Gary Barlow in that documentary always annoyed me as well: "She was it, the voice of ABBA". I know it was a documentary to promote Agnetha's "A" album but there was no need to make it seem as if Agnetha was the only ABBA singer of any importance and competely ignore Frida's contribution.

Holding Agnetha back adds as much excitement as the other way round. Just listen to Happy New Year or Chiquitita. In this songs Frida is holding back with the same result.

  • @renemartinez7864
    @renemartinez7864 3 роки тому +63

Frida is often overlooked. In many reviews over the years people have been crediting her vocals to Agnetha. (Blondes have more fun?). Frida is a mezzo-soprano while Agnetha is a soprano, so Frida's voice is naturally lower, although they both have such an incredible range and blend fabulously together.
Another interesting thing that often gets overlooked nowadays because people are listening to tracks individually is the sequencing of their albums. The long string ending of this song leads flawlessly into the almost whispered intro of "Kisses of Fire", the next song on the Voulez-Vous album.

@@moviereviews4747 In the end the lead vocal will be taken by the voice it suits. Agnetha had the higher sitting voice and so it's a matter of whether they wrote to cater to her higher voice, or whether pop music in general was just more written in that fach.
I don't necessarily believe Frida was deliberately held back to star Agnetha.
Music always favoured the Soprano and tenor than the baritone and mezz0(frida)

@@moviereviews4747 I think the lead vocals were equally divided between Agnetha and Frida. Just like Agnetha, Frida sang lead on several huge ABBA hits, including "Fernando" which was ABBA's biggest selling single during their active career. Yes, Agnetha sang lead on all three singles released in ABBA's last active year (1982), but perhaps this was done for marketing reasons. Frida was launching her solo album and singles around the same time that ABBA released their last singles. If Frida had sung lead on ABBA's 1982 singles as well, it could have caused confusion and detracted attention from her solo releases. As it was, by 1982 ABBA's reign in the international singles charts was over and all three singles with Agnetha on lead flopped in most major markets. They weren't even released in the US. Meanwhile, Frida enjoyed a huge international hit with "I Know There's Something Going On", particularly in the US where it reached # 13 on the Billboard Hot 100.

      @chelseacharger 3 роки тому +5

@@m.menneke8513 Well at least you've had the courtesy to give a considered opinion instead of your usual pithy insults to an ABBA member. I would agree that Agnetha has what is now considered the more 'pop voice'. She is 4-5 years younger than Frida and her voice sounds even more 'girlish'. But others have since had girlish voices like Kylie and Britney that appealed. Agnetha is of course superior to them. But 'Pop' can contain a wide spectrum of music sounds and crossover with other genres.
Frida is almost a throwback singer to the days of the big bands, Swing and Jazz. That was her background with literally hundreds of concerts with various bands and solo from before she was even a teenager. When you think about it, ABBA were an unlikely pop/rock/disco/synth driven phenomenon. Agnetha herself was steeped in the sentimentality of Schlager as well as influenced by heartbreak ballads of Connie Francis. Benny, a guy whose first love is the accordion and Swedish folk, Bjorn, also into skiffle and folk and mostly playing acoustic guitar. Then Anni-Frid with her Jazz/Swing upbringing plus opera influence. Individually, they would have continued to be respected and successful artists in their home country. Together, this odd mix produced a potent and unique sound.
Who got the best songs is highly debateable. 'Fernando' is ABBA's second biggest selling single after DQ. Then there is 'Knowing Me Knowing You' and other #1's 'Super Trouper', 'Money Money Money' and 'I Have A Dream'. In fact more songs with her on lead went to Number One in the UK, Germany, France and Australia (big markets for ABBA) So that kind of debunks the 'not suitable' theory. 'Our Last Summer', 'Andante Andante', 'One Man One Woman', 'Cassandra' are amongst the other beautiful Frida led songs. Many of ABBA's biggest hits also have on joint lead vocals. Agnetha is of course immensely popular but they are all equally important in the ABBA mix.
We could tell from the moment the appeared in Brighton '74 that they were something special. I was lucky enough to see them at one of their Wembley concerts. I can tell you, first hand, that Frida was an amazing live performer with Benny a dynamo on the keyboards. ABBA were a much better live act than they gave themselves credit for because, as we know, those studio recordings are not easy to reproduce on stage.

😍🤩🎶✨ Frida has the deeper mezzo-sporano voice (as heard through her lead of this song), and Agnetha's voice is Soprano (and you can hear her join in during the verse, and sing completely with Frida in the chorus 😊). Nevertheless, Benny & Björn often aimed to get Frida to sing high notes, and Agentha: low notes, and while that could be understandable difficult for them, with B&B's direction, that twisting around of vocal-ranges could also add much additional sheen to the ABBA sound.
By the way: it's "*It* was in the paper today", not "*I* was in the papers today" 😉
I've always loved the funky sexiness of this song, and its arrangement 💖

And now I want to tell you some interesting facts about a few of their songs 😁
      4. Arrival is one of two ABBA songs that don't have any lyrics.
      11. Dancing Queen was written as a gift for the Swedish queen, and they sang the song for the first time in a Swedish opera house on the eve of the queen's wedding. And also Dancing Queen is considered to be the second happiest song in the world. First place is Don't Stop Me Now by Queen.
      12. Disillusion is the only song written entirely by Agnetha.
      16. Eagle was written in honor of the band Eagle and has a very similar style to their songs.
      18. Fernando was not added to any album. It was only after many years that this song began to be added to the album Arrival.
      33. The song I Have A Dream featured a guest chorus of children.
      38. I'm Still Alive is a song written entirely by Agnetha, but never released. Agnetha sang it only once, at a concert at the Wembley Arena in 1979.
      41. Intermezzo No. 1 is the second song with no lyrics. Completely composed by Benny.
      51. They blew up on this song. In 1975, Mamma Mia did not leave the top of the Australian charts for several weeks, and it was noticed in other countries around the world.
      55. It's actually a compilation of parts of 3 songs that they never released.
      59. My Love, My Life was written especially for Agnetha's and Bjorn's daughter.
      66. People Need Love is the first song they wrote and sang together as ABBA.
      68. ABBA entered the Eurovision Song Contest in 1973 with the song Ring Ring and took 3rd place.
      81. Suzy-Hang-Around is the only song where Benny is the lead voice.
      85. The Day Before You Came is the last song they wrote together.
      90. The Way Old Friends Do is a song that the members sang together in 2016. They performed on stage together for the first time since 1982.
      91. The Winner Takes It All is a song written after Agnetha and Bjorn divorced. It tells about their experiences and feelings. Bjorn was completely drunk (drank up sorrows) while writing it.
      93. Tropical Loveland was written in honor of Australia, which made them stand out. It tells how Australia is a beautiful place.
      95. Under Attack is the last song released after the band broke up in 1983.
      98. ABBA won the Eurovision Song Contest with the song Waterloo in 1974.
      100. When All Is Said And Done was written after Anni-Frid Lyngstad and Benny Andersson divorced. It tells about their feelings during the divorce.

It’s time you react to ‘I’m A Marionette’, so much different from everything you’ve heard from ABBA till now. Also, I’m suggesting (again) you listen to ‘One Night in Bangkok’ which was written by Björn and Benny for the musical ‘Chess’ and was a big hit in the 80’s (still playing daily on radios until today). Believe me you won’t regret it!

Yes,this ABBA song sound a little different to the "main ABBA sound" perhaps one can say,on the other hand,no other band as ABBA could master so many different music genres. They have so many different sounds, and they always master every instrument in their songs perfectly..it comes in perfectly and mix perfectly with the other instruments, well timed, perfectly with the vocals as well...this song is just another proof of that...Good song...

One thing to remember on how to tell the difference between A and F is Frida has the more sultry voice, lover register. Agnetha has a more vulnerable quality at times, usually she takes the higher range vocals. This is in general...not meant to be always. Both women have the ability to blend together, and both have the ability to produce very sharp vocals at times. (Frida more so, I think. Listen to her album Ensam, you hear how crisp/sharp her vocals could be at times.)I think the guys and their engineer understood this and knew how to highlight that.
As for this song, it's not really a favorite of mine. It has a nice groove, but I'm not a fan of the production. At times it comes off a little shrill during the chorus. It's not horrible. Just not one of my favorites. In this case, I have to agree with Derrick's criticisms.

Good song. Quite soulful sexy disco funk-ish type of song with ABBA twist. I like contrast between calmer verses and dramatic elevation in chorus. It kinda reflects dynamics of being in love or loving. "Love is dynamite drug" so they are "exploding".

One of the interesting things about this track is that, as is typical of the Voulez-Vous album of 1979, it is a track that is good enough to be released as an A-side single but in the end remained as an album track (I may be wrong, but I don’t think that it was released as a B-side on any of ABBA’s singles). This is the remarkable thing - it is an ‘album track’ but certainly not ‘filler’, with the strings, the synths, the syncopation and, as you so clearly note, the ‘sensual’ vocals (particularly those of Frida in the verses). Good enough to be an A-side even today, but wasn’t. The elongated, ‘stringy’ closing is especially memorable. That’s testament to the songwriting, talent, performance and production values of a wonderful band and their production team, who continue to entertain us almost forty years after they left the recording studio as a group for the last time. Best wishes, Eòghann

I've actually found a song by the Bellamy Brothers called 'Lovers Live Longer' which contains the lyrics 'Babe, I read it in the news today.

First place is Don't Stop Me Now.
