Very under appreciated in some circles, he is an absolute musical genius
One of my favorites and a beautiful song. Thanks for reacting to it. I think you may be the first I've seen! ♥ Yes, Warren was extremely self-destructive in his early years. I am so glad you didn't fall back on Werewolves of London or Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner. Both great songs, but they are covered more for novelty than the songwriting/singing. Warren was and still is my favortie artist. RIP to a complicated but extremely talented man.
What a great song. And definitely can relate to that feeling. Or at least i used to.
Thanks for watching.
Enjoy every sandwich.
I agree. Lots of folks only know Warren through his more popular "novelty" songs, and never discover what a truly amazing lyricist he was. Achingly beautiful, viciously sarcastic and soul-bearingly honest.
Warren has helped so many of us addicts in recovery. We have definitely kept him in our hearts for a while. Thanks for sharing.
The song is autobiographical to a degree. There was a stretch where he was drinking heavily, stuck in the Hollywood Hotel, unable to pay his bill. Leaving would be stiffing the hotel.
Check out Fistful of Rain or I Was In the House When the House Burned Down, both from his Life’ll Kill Ya album.
Zee-Von...First 2 albums are stellar. Carmalita, Mohammad's Radio, Lawyers Guns & Money. Every song is nice. 😎
Mohammed's radio reaction coming later today!
Indeed. I also love "The French Inhaler". Warren was such a fantastic songwriter, and this one doesn't disappoint.
Have been a fan of Warren Zevon since the late 70's. Check out his Wikipedia page. Also check out "Keep Me in Your Heart", the final song on his final album.
Enjoyed this a lot! Mohammed's radio reaction coming later today.
Thanks for watching and the recommendation!
heartbreaking and amazing ...
a legend , he's an artist for artists..
You are heading into a deep and sometimes dark rabbit hole with Warren Zevon. Keep going and enjoy.
@@olathestanwalker6717 As Zevon himself would say, enjoy every sandwich!
This is my absolute favorite Warren Zevon Song! Please react to more if not all of his catalog!
Great song! Only checked out 2 so far, but might do more eventually.
@@SaeedReacts. I think you’d really get a kick out of his song Mr. Bad Example! Hope you react to it.
Warren Zevon (zee-von) is a very deep rabbit hole. but well worth it. some suggestions-Roland the Headless Thompson Gunner, the Envoy, Excitable Boy. Mohammed's Radio.
Thanks for the suggestions.
I have a reaction to Mohammed's radio coming later today.
Apologies for the pronounciation in avance, cause i recorded it right after this video.
I hear despair and hope at the same time. Genius. Zevon is my favorite.
The opening string intro is a reprise from the first track of the album, Frank And Jesse James.
Your talk about the destroying your brain calls to mind another track on this album, I'll Sleep When I'm Dead
Most authentic reaction to this song I have ever seen.
Thanks! Appreciate that!
Amazing songwriter. Other songs by Warren to check out:
Carmelita
Werewolves of London
Poor Poor Pitiful Me
Lawyers, Guns and Money
Keep Me In Your Heart
Roland The Headless Thompson Gunner
Saeed, Zevon had a problem with alcohol for a long time, but then got sober for the last 20 or 30 years of his life. Glad to hear of your sobriety, too. I’m coming up on 6 years myself. I definitely remember the shaking hands and the auditory hallucinations.
Congratulations on the upcoming 6 years!
Scary things the brain can do when we don't take proper care for it
Pronouncing his last name, the accent is on the second syllable. Fantastic songwriter. You've heard him sing before if you've heard the song Werewolves of London. A few of my favorites of his are Accidentally Like A Martyr, The Envoy, and Excitable Boy. Excitable Boy is an interesting contrast of happy sounding music with very dark lyrics. He has a lot of other great songs, but those three come first to mind, for me. I'm enjoying your reactions.
Thanks for letting me know about that. Apologies for the next reaction where i still get the pronounciation wrong (it was recorded right after this one)
Thanks so much for watching.
I saw Warren Zevon in concert once, on October 18th, 1987 in Milwaukee. My friend Peter Jest who was just 23 years old at the time was the Concert Promoter! Now Peter Jest is almost 60 and has owned his own beloved and iconic Milwaukee music venue since 1989 called Shank Hall, named after a fictional concert venue in the hilarious 1984 movie "This is Spinal Tap" Peter and Warren remained friends until Warren's untimely passing.
There really was a Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel. It was not the kind of place that VPs stayed at it during the Oscars.
Some fun facts about this song that get rightfully brought up in every comments section(lol).
It is extremely autobiographical. He wrote this song about a period where he was mostly known as just a writer, writing lyrics for other musicians. He was basically a mess, his wife kicked him out, and he was living from hotel to hotel drinking until he couldnt afford the place he was at anymore. He obviously ended up at the Hollywood Hawaiian, and he knew there was no way he could pay the bill. So one night David Marks(one of the original beach boys) borrowed his mothers station wagon, drove into the alley behind the hotel and helped Warren flee the hotel without paying. This is where the title of the song came from. Warren was a Desperado under the eaves when he climbed out of the window of that hotel. Some other fun things, this song has a bunch of amazing artists singing background vocals, Jacksone Browne, JD Souther, Carl Wilson(another beach boys connection) . Years later, when he was way more popular and successful he tried to go back to the hotel and pay his bill, they settled for a signed copy of the album.
If you look 'down Gower avenue' like they say in the song, you'll see the Hollywood sign.
Have to admit that the only Warren Zevon song that I can remember hearing is Werewolves Of London.
Really liked this one 👌🏻
Getting slight vibes of The Eagle's Desperado, which came out about 3 years earlier
My first song by him and liked it. I have a reaction to his song Mohammed's radio coming later today
It's pronounced Warren Zee-von, lots of folks mispronounce it, so no worries. This is one of my favorites from him. Funny story; years later, he finally did pay his bill from the "Hollywood Hawaiian Hotel". Look away down Gower Avenue. Check "The French Inhaler", another one of my faves.
I think every alcoholic can relate to this song in a sad sort of way.
Carl Wilson of The Beach Boys doing back up vocals
Warren Zevon is one my favorite songwriters and so much underrated.
There is the track "The Envoy" from the same album that came in my mind, which has such great lyrics, too. Change some names in it and it is more actual in these days than you think.
My man Warren! Still miss his wit! ♥
I love this song. Warren was such a great lyricist. His last song, Keep Me in Your Heart is beautiful, very emotional. My favourite is probably Accidentally Like a Martyr (great song title too) Or Carmelita.❤️
Great song! Thanks for watching and the recommendations!
OMG why so few people? This man was a bona fide genius. Stravinsky taught him. Makes me madder than hell. And this song is a true story. He couldn't heck out as he couldn't pay the bill. All of his songs are semi autobiographical. Or totally. Please please do more. EVERYONE wanted to play with him. Look him up. French Inhaler; Carmelita; Mohammed's Radio; Lawyers Guns and Money. Its a very long list.
I think Zevon was alluding to and casting shade on the fake desperadoes in the LA music scene of that era.
Jackson Browne was a fan and a friend.
Zevon was a dark one.
The Pretender and the Offender! Love them both, but very different songwriters...Pretty sure Jackson was the producer for this album.
This one gets to me. 💔😢
VERY evocative!
100%
And if you want an album to start with, the one this is from is a great one. BTW he never did pay the bill.
The "morning's way of shaking hands" is mindless, disconnected sex.
🎊 “Excitable Boy” was my 1st exposure to Warren…it’s different, but you’ll love the cadence‼️
Thanks for the recommendation!
@@SaeedReacts. In 1978 “Excitable Boy” was a hit on AM radio 📻. It was a hit before “Werewolves of London” became popular!
Pronounced Zee-vahn. My favorite song by my favorite artist. An incredible lyricist, check out The French Inhaler
Will try to get it right for my next reaction. Thanks !
Will add that song to my list.
@@SaeedReacts. awesome! Great reactions! The French Inhaler was written about Warren's ex and the mother of his son, making the lyrics particularly cutting.
just look at who in the chorus for this song.
Saeed, check out Lawyers Guns and Money, one of his best and my personal favorite.
