  • In this video we will explore and demo some of the interesting, weird and wacky preset patches of the Roland D10, Roland D20 and Roland D110 series of synthesizers. This range of synths are the cut down version of the Roland D50, which is all I could afford in 1988.
    In the previous D20 video "Strange Brew Setlist" we played some of the more conventional sounds (link below) so make sure to check that video out too if you are interested in this synthesizer.

    I’ve used my D-10 on and off over the last 30 years of owning it. I used it heavily on some “Pop” demos I made in the late ‘80s and early ‘90s.
    Your videos on it prove that it can actually sound quite good and useful, and I certainly appreciate you taking the time to make them. I’ve even gotten a better idea of how to use some of the presets, thanks to this video and the one you did on your band and the D-20!
    Keep up the great work! 😉

    Demo Songs outro so takes me back. I bought a D20 in 1988 or 89, just when they came out. The year later a girlfriend and I were in California on a road trip and the lounge singer in a bar we were at was using one. The outro song of his set was one of the D20 demo songs but he was playing like he was playing it. Crowd clapped, he waved and left and I laughed a little. Great video, thanks for doing this.

      that's a classic trick! another demo was flight of the bumble bee at an insanely fast tempo. i used to mime to that one on stage, but not too seriously, like playing with my back to the keys etc :)

    I remember using the D10 quite a bit in my uni days when doing a task which involved designing sound effects for apps and video games. These machines definitely have a sound of their own which I find quirky and distinctly cartoon-esque (By no means a criticism as depending on the sort of thing you are working on this can of course be a benefit), and I recall hours of fun spent doodling around on these despite never really succeeding in coming to grips with the programming side of it. Brilliant video, and the demo song at the end is pure gold!

    What a trip down memory lane. I knew the sound of every patch before you played them. We got one in 1990 and I dug deeeeeeep into how that thing worked. Used to program full songs and record them into my old tascam 4 track. The trick with the drums was the patterns had to be programed separately on their own rhythm channel, that's why you didn't get any sound. It's been years since I did it, but I can still remember the button placements for getting around. Loved all the demo songs too. The nutcracker was always a hit. I always wished when you used the sequencer the lights blinked when playing like the demo, instead of just turning on/off if the track was in use. Anyway, thanks for this. Mine still works, although a few keys are dead. I may need to go pull it out of the attic fire it up (the midi still works with an outboard controller, yeah!!!) and take another trip. :-)

  • @leegreveson
    @leegreveson 6 років тому +6

    It's very nostalgic reading all the comments, many of us couldn't afford these instruments back then, most of us still at school or at our first job. The closest we got were trips to the local music store to have a play around. However, while I was studying GCSE music, our school had a Yamaha V50 workstation and to be honest, it beat the D20 hands down, so much so that when I had the chance to buy a 2nd hand D20, I opted instead for a used MC300 sequencer and a brand new XP10 instead due to 16 part multitambrality. I also remember reading in SoS, that we should send more time getting to know our synths inside out before buying another, else we just scratch the surface of their potential. I wonder how many of us fall at that hurdle, I certainly do in the software synths department, but maybe I should delve under the hood of my only hardware synth D-50. I just wonder, do we crave too much nowadays?

    Hi Woody, thanks for the trip down memory lane with this Roland demo. I sadly have never owned a Roland synth but have used a few including the D-Series plus the Alpha Juno and the W-30 Sampler Workstation. I mention the W-30 as if I recall correctly, it had a magnificent demo track on its disks of an acoustic guitar with a female vox. You could hear the picks and scrapes of the guitar strings! Thanks again and oh I do have an Edirol/Roland PCR-800 controller if that counts :)

    After having seen Woody's "almost to tears" D50 video, I did my usual routine of first checking Wikipedia (to learn what it is) and then eBay (to learn what it costs).
    A strange turn of events led to my owning a used, almost pristine D10 that I bought for CHF 51 (less than USD 55). Having seen this video, I'm actually quite happy that I spent all that close-to-nothing for a synth that only a few weeks ago I didn't know existed!

    It seems hard to believe that I've owned the D20 for 30 yrs, which I used for production and gigs. Up until 5yrs ago, after 20 yrs of gathering dust, I found out that the floppy drive wasn't working. The repair shop said that it was the drive-belt, repaired it and also installed the internal battery. Reminisced with all the tracks on the floppys. But then, I again returned the D20 to the dust-farm. Now listening to Harmonycity, Ice Rain and New Age Harp reminded me of how rich they are.

    What an amazing trip down memory lane. I was allowed to take a D20 home from the store where I was doing my year work experience in 1988. Whilst I loved its D50 like LA sounds, I very quickly soon learnt to loath its very limited sequencer that only allowed 1 song to be in memory at the same time. The Korg M1 quickly wiped the floor with the D20 when it was released shortly afterwards although why Korg left a 3.5" floppy drive off the M1 was very strange.

    I used to play with the D-series synths at my local Roland dealer back in the late 80's. I remember the D-20, 10 and 5 well. They were priced out of range so I ended up getting a used Juno 2 from a Pawn Shop for a decent price (in 1991) of $350 USD. I loved the feel of that keyboard compared to the others I had. I ended up selling the Juno 2 a few years ago. Now i have no keyboard that feels right. Now I am looking to purchase a D-10 on eBay for about $200 USD including shipping. Also the built in drum machine will come in handy for practicing the bass. Thanks for making these videos. They help me justify buying a synth I once would have bought If I could have afforded it in the past.

    Hey woody..HNY from the southern USA.. I'm a tech with electro-mechanical background. Rhodes ,wurli,cp70 and hammond etc.Decided to add vintage 80's 90s synths to my corral a while back,most times to repair and flip ,but have kept a Korg CX-3 after a full recap,etc and just finishing a roland VK7 up for sale. Next up a roland xp-10 in great shape just with sticky keys,cleanin and wipe/reload with battery change.Anyway I noticed you play the ultimate tower stand standing and sittin and wantedyou "pro and con list" on whichever models you've have/had.I've built quite a few custom stands from various materials and still get an order for one once in a while,[the virus has hurt this alot] butby far my "light up" programmed LED racks have been the most popular. don't think the ultimate need a full video but your call.

    Great vid, Woody. ;)
    I only recently realised just how long Roland clung on to their digital synth engines / chipsets, and re-used them in other products over the years.
    It makes sense I guess, as they would have spent fortunes on developing the new chip designs, especially back in the 80s and 90s.
    Reminds me that I need to try the ROMs for the MT-32 on the D10 board I bought.
    IIRC, the chipset of the D10 / D20 / D110 is pretty much identical to the MT-32.
    (same with the JV-80 and many other "Super JV" synths, and the old GS and Groovebox stuff.)
    Incidentally, I just sold my Groovebox the other week on eBay. It's a nice synth, but I rarely used it tbh.

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  6 років тому +1

      ash, very interesting to read about the rom swaps. let me know how that goes. the mt-32 rom dumps are out there, will you burn your own eproms? i'd like to get an mt for old times sake, i was sequencing one with my atari. there's a nice vst emulation you can find otherwise, it sounds good.

    • @electronash
      @electronash 6 років тому +1

      Hi, Woody,
      Yep, I have an EPROM programmer (Minipro TL-866), and I've just checked the D10 board, and it does appear to have a very similar CPU and Boss reverb chip.
      There are a fair few differences though, and it's possible that the Gate Array / memory map might be too dissimilar to work directly with the unmodified MT-32 ROMs.
      Worth a try though, as so much of it looks the same.
      The MT-32 uses an Intel 8088 CPU, and the D10 board uses an 8097 CPU.
      The two main ROMs for the CPU on the D10 board are socketed, but the "Tone", PCM, and Reverb ROMs are all soldered.
      I'll have to try the CPU ROMs first, and see if I get any output at all, or if the LCD still shows anything.
      The VST emulators / MUNT do sound great now, but it's fun to see if these old boards can still be modded. ;)
      I'll give you a shout on Facebook if the ROMs work, or if the D10 board catches fire. lol

    You know, I've never really subscribed to the idea that some keyboards sound "dated"..... A good patch/sound is good sound, no matter what synth/keyboard makes it, and if its what you want, whether you're playing a cover or creating original music - then so be it !! :-)
    This D-20 demo is a good example of that !

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  6 років тому

      i take your point and agree to some extent and thanks for enjoying the demo, but there's a reason i avoided the piano/rhodes/organ/acoustic sounds, those do sound very dated due to the limitations of the ROM size and technology at the time! pads and synth sounds are still really nice though!

    Hello. What a souvernir for me to ! I was having this D20 in 1989 too and it was magic ! MULTITIMBRAL ! my god. At 07:42 You said : impossible to use / ear the drum track in the sequencer. As I remember I don't agree. You can use for instance track #8 as drum track and record/play individual drums elements whith the bkeybed and also use the rythm pattern track to assemble programmed the 1 measure rythm patterns. You can also record Youself your own1 measure rythm patterns and use them in the sequencer. For me the big lack point of this D20 sequencer is , when looping, a time lag appears at the end of the loop before it starts again, and this was annoying !

    I had this one myself - one could characterise the device as synth sarcasm. Most of its sounds are best described somewhere between plainly digital and rather stupid: Try composing a song with "Very busy", "Big Ben" and "Typewriter". However, the warm pad fade and some of the bass sounds where actually not that bad...

    Back in the 90ties I did lots of arrangements with d20 but I had to add d70 sounds and MV30 sequencer later, all alone it was only a toy sounding gear with small polyphony, no copy/paste option in tracks for bars. Working with the sequencer was terrible experience. But we were young then. No computers. Big LCD screens like today. Nevertheless yesterday a very well maintained D20 hit my studio again after 30 years. I am sentimental.

      Back then (and maybe still today), there were lots of dealer exclusivity agreements within regions. For that reason, we were not a Yamaha dealer. However, we were a Roland, Korg, Casio (pianos), Alesis (drum machines and sequencers) dealer. But mostly Roland.
      We sold a lot of Korg M1s, very few D-50s, lots of D-20s, D-10s, and the occassional D-110. Later, we sold a lot of the U-20s because it had a "better" piano sound, and the quality of the piano was the benchmark during that era. We also sold a few W-30s, but I seem to recall they were pretty expensive, and so didn't move quickly. D-70 came out later, but it never really moved. I liked it because of the huge keybed, but it sounded like a U-20.
      Our used analog keyboards were a deal. I do wish I had money back then. As it was, I had picked up an HS-60 (Juno 106 with speakers) from that store. We used to have a bunch of old TB-303s, drummatix, etc. in a case, for like $150 each or something.
      I stopped working there in 1991 or 1992. I wonder if those old TB-303s and other things ever went for big money from there. :D
      TBH, the D-10/D-20 is nostalgic for me, but I'd never want one. I always thought the sound was pretty cheesy :P

    We used to use this live back in the 80's. I'd program percussion and keyboard parts into the onboard multitrack recorder and the band would play along.
    It was pretty good for covers of 80's tracks that were quite synth dependent. It had "similar" sounds to those used in studio recordings using the D-50.
    The D-20 was a bit thin sounding, with no top or bottom end. As a workstation it was pretty powerful... but anything recorded with it sounded a little mushy and difficult to pick out the individual voices. Everything ended up sounding a little sameish.
    Still a versatile and well priced piece of hardware for songwriters.

    Beautiful instrument. This is second generation D-series. I would like to get one of these, but I can't find one in good condition. I recently got a W-30 in brand new-like condition, and I am not disappointed. Being more immediate that the W-30, the D-20 must be amazing!!! I of course also like the aesthetics of this instrument. The W-30 keyboard feel isn't very good, but the D-20 should still be great, like the feel of the D-50.

    • @looneyburgmusic

      The keybed are not even close to being similar I'm afraid to say... The D-50 is the "semi-pro" kind of not fully weighted keys, while all the 2nd Gen. D-Synths have unweighted "Synth Action" keybeds...

      I got the D-10 last week. Its rather fantastic. Roland signature sizzling saws, squares, adjustable pulse width, ring mod, multi stage envelopes, keyboard tracking of all kinds, what's not to like? It's a wonderful synthesizer. And yes, I still want the D-20.

    • @looneyburgmusic

      All you need to do is:
      1). Change your internal battery;
      2). Download the factory .sysex from any of 2nd gen D-synths, (D-5/10/20/110), and load it in and everything should work. Personally, I would go with the D-10 factory set, it seems to be the easiest to find a working copy online...

      The D-50 was an entirely new animal!
      It used bits and snippets of samples for the perfect combination of real and fantasy instruments. Roland was also smart enough to add on-board effects as well. Yamaha responded in kind by utilizing samples in the FM algorithms of their SY series and added a sequencer. Oddly enough the two manufacturers handled Midi differently. Also, a bit of trivia here.. The D-50's Digital Native Dance sound was a complete mistake when a programmer accidentally looped to the wrong address!

    You forgot the D-5, which also has the exact same engine... Each of the 2nd Generation D-Synths are 100% patch compatiable, they simply ignore any settings that do not apply. For example, the D-5 will ignore the reverb settings from a D-10 patch, while the D-20 will ignore the "Chase" setting of a D-5 patch...

    I know a bunch of the sounds are cheezy and overall the D-20/D-10/D-110 sounds dated. (please keep in mind that my D-10 is STILL my main synth. I bought it back in 1992.) I have struggled a bit in trying to bring it into the more modern age and incorporate it's sounds into my compositions, rather than just use it as a midi driver.
    Then the 8-bit guy released this the other day:
    ua-cam.com/video/f1GbVxuB6P4/v-deo.html
    Now, that song was made using a VERY cheezy consumer keyboard (a CasioMT-68). On initial view I thought wow another cheap consumer POS (though back in the day I learned how to play using those consumer machines). However, when Anders Jensen created a few multi-track recordings using it... I was AMAZED.
    I shared this in order to demonstrate how a real modern synth musician takes what is available and makes something really good (in my opinion at least.) Musicianship trumps equipment every time. So these old synths have possibilities. In the right hands and skill set I believe almost anything can be used to create a decent song. I will continue to experiment with my D-10 and with luck will someday release something that I like.

    • @WoodyPianoShack
      @WoodyPianoShack  6 років тому

    • @r.kapaun01
      @r.kapaun01 6 років тому

      Thanks and I am still rockin the D-10 as a (master synth). It works the best (as far as latency etc.) I even purchased a 'dedicated' midi controller but, I experienced far more lag and other issues. I would also HIGHLY recommend clicking on 8-bit guy's links to soundcloud. The 'unpublished/referenced but not heard'' song is really good (again, in my opinion and based on what he did with the 'crap' sounds).
      Between you and 8-bit guy... I really feel like we have the tools available to truly grow in our musicianship. Videos, like your contributions and his input REALLY inspire me to keep at it and work on alternate ways to make the sounds in my head a reality. There maybe easier ways to accomplish what I want but, there is something to be said for unusual uses of old tech. Thanks again. Was hoping you would not be offended by my reference to another 'keyboard' guy.
