    If listening to the A11 - Warm Pad Fade preset with my eyes closed I could be easily fooled and believe that I'm hearing a big, classy and expensive analog polysynth.

    This synth has great sounds and it doesn't matter if it is better or worst than other synths, it is awesome as a synth.

      It evolutionized my sound overnight. LA Synthesis is beautiful, solid and lush.

    I remember learning that I could sequence this keyboard using my Amiga computer. It blew my 16 year old mind...

    • @hpept
      @hpept 6 років тому +2

      same here. i had an Amiga 500 and used to sequence D-10 and SuperJX, as long as a Yamaha TX-16W and Korg M3-R. it was cutting edge at that time.

    I have a D10 that I keep in shape with which I always play. I have other recent keyboard, but he has something special that reminds me of my 80s. And I'm basically a guitarist. I love it ...

    I worked at a music store in the 90s. I thought the D-10 sounded cheap, until the U-20 came out. Then I really appreciated the fat that the D-10 was a real synthesizer and had some decent synth sounds (just no realistic sounds) vs. the coming wave of romplers and anything with "general midi" as a marketing point.
    At the time, the D-50 was too expensive for most of the non-pro customers. so D-10s used to sell left and right. D-20s as well. I seem to recall these all had decent build quality.

    I agree - and that A11 Warm Pad Fade is just a Whole patch made with the internal Saw waveforms slightly detuned, as one would do with any analog synth. The D series synth all have that characteristic "semi-analog" flavor when using the "S" (synthesis) structure instead of the PCM.

    I've owned both the D10 and D50. I have to say they're both great vintage synths with their own strengths. Would buy both again!

    The Roland D-5 was one of my first "proper" synths. A41Warm Str Fade was one of my favourite patches. And the D-10 version sounds even better.

    Fantasy Bells is so incredibly cheesy, yet so captivating. It might really add a nice touch a song, if you have it set just right.
    Thanks Synthmania for all these wonderful demos of the cheaper synths as well. They are a great point of reference for those who are looking for an affordable vintage synth!

    • @SynthManiaDotCom
      @SynthManiaDotCom  8 років тому +2

      +Fuzzball Sounds You're very welcome. "Fantasy Bells" (3:57) imitates the classic Roland D-50 patch "Fantasia". The D-10 doesn't have a synth engine as capable as the D-50, so the original Fantasia patch sounds much better, but it's not a bad synth on its own. Many people like burgers, but just as many people like cheeseburgers.

    I loved the D-10 (it was my first synth,) and even though it's wasn't as thick as the D-50 it was eight-part multi-timbral and had a drum machine in it! The D-50 wasn't even close there. Armed with a copy of Cakewalk 2.0 I had a working studio. Love this synth. Nice video!

      Very cool - that is literally how I started my rig. (D10 with Cakewalk 2.0 for DOS).
      I still use the D10 to this day as a controller.

    Another great demo Synthmania... Always proving it is not about what a synth can do for one but what one can do with a synth - with creativity, imagination and talent. D-10... I was blown away when I played one first time. My first serious synth was a D-20 - which is a workstation with the same architecture. It offered tremendous value for money at the time. Sure, it was no analog or the bigger "D" brothers but it made sequencing affordable before computers caught up.

    I still have a D-10. Used to use it way back in the day with a Roland MC500 sequencer and a Tascam 38 1/2" 8 track coupled with a Tascam 312b board. It was a nice setup for home studio.

    Honestly nowadays keyboard is like toys and most of them from China. but these old was so good in quality,most of them was from Japan,Italy etc
    I miss those good kind of keyboard. Roland D-50 was TOP in 80s with YAMAHA DX-7 !! they looked so good ,most bands had them .
    btw,thanks for the video !

    Thank you for your great demos and contribution to the synth world ! I really like your playing ! I've had a D-110 for 18 years and I still use it (along side my beloved D-50) for its drums and also for lead sounds. the ring mod structures and PCM loops are a very under used feature of the D synths. One can also use patches with detuned timbre to create an "ensemble" effect at the expense of timbre memory and polyphony. Like any synth, with a bit of tweaking and effect it can sound awesome :-)

    Yesterday i was searching for a first synth for a friend who wants to learn music. At first i found a Casio CTK-100 for 10 bucks, another CTK for 30, but then i proposed her a D-100 for 120 bucks, with your video as the demo. You guess it, the D-10 is next to me for 2 days so i can learn and then teach her how to use it. She even had it for 90 bucks, as a few buttons are quite unresponsive. So thank you Paolo ; ) I mean i have a D-10 for 2 days in part thanks to you ;p

    This keyboard was amazing when it came out I still love the sounds the d50 was amazing when it came out. The D-10 was what I could have forwarded the time to buy a keyboard for. The d20 came out and it had a floppy disk added to its capabilities. I bought an alesis multi-tracking mmt 8 sequencer and tascam 4track and got busy started writing some music. I'm grateful for this keyboard.

    I had a D-10 and I loved it and mourned it getting ripped off (my fault for leaving it unattended) and we made some great recordings back 20 years ago. Love hearing these patches again. Always thought it was a very serviceable mid range synth for performing and sequencing. I miss it so much I just bought a D-110 rack for about $25 on ebay. So excited for it to arrive!

    Fantastic demo! :-) These sounds remind me a lot of late 1980's early 1990's pop and dance. Thank you very much for sharing.
    Because of your wonderful demo's i rescued a Roland U-20 and the U-220.
    I might do the same with a slightly damaged D-10 that's up for sale.

    I am still loving my D-10. I own it since it was realised, it was my first synth. Then I bought it’s PG-10 programmer due to the lack of commands on the front panel. 4 years ago I bought a D-50 and it’s PG-1000’s and I can say these 2 synths are complementary, not made for the same goal. For D-10 owners please try WarmPadFade patch through an EHX Smallstone and a Digitech Polara ! JMJ fans will appreciate.
    Thx Paolo 👍

    I learned how to compose/arrange by ear with the D-10 (hooked up to a Roland PR-100 2-track sequencer). My entire formative years (early 90's to late 90's) in music was spent using it, so it has a special place in my heart. From there, I graduated to using DAW on the computer and upgraded to as Korg Triton LE.

    My first synth in L.A. was the Roland D-20. Then I bought the bigger brother, the famous D-50. Then, when came out the SY-77 Yamaha, sold the D-50. Later, despite the fact of the extreme flexibility of the synthesis AFM-AWM, I decided to keep my set-up, a synth in L.A. Synthesis, and so I bought the D110, as well as having the same sound of the keyboard to her little brother, had also eight separate outputs ...

    I've just completely refurbished and repaired a D-10, must admit this is a real nice synth, which well exceeded my opinion of it initially. Fantastic build quality (like the other Ds) and a set of fat sounds which were never seen for a couple of decades after that. Yes, the D-50 is out there, but the D-10/D-20 has its rightful place too bringing better multi-timbral and sampled drums too.

    I'm fortunate enough to have a CM-32L which is basically a stripped down version of the MT-32 with no display or controls
    other than a power button, 2 LEDs and a rotary volume control but I wouldn't mind owning the module version of the D-10
    which is a D-110. Another interesting thing about the D-10/D-110 and D-20 is that they also have a mix of PCM and LA
    Synthesis drums so in a sense comparing the D-10/D-110 to a D-50/D-550 is like comparing apples and oranges. Even
    in the mid 90s some producers were using keyboards and modules like the D-10. I don't have any plans to buy a D-110
    but even 10 years from now it would never be "too late" to buy one, it's never too late. I quite like the bell sounds on the
    D-10 like A41 Joyful Times but it might not be worth buying just for the odd couple of sounds.

    It's just that I've heard so much D-50 and DX7. I spent a lot of years listening to NIN and Enya. And I can't get excited about FM. But the D-10 sounds all make me really happy without sounding like super-primitive video game music. But I really like a lot of the JV-1080 sounds, and I guess that and the Proteus would be 3rd-wave video game music, right? All those Shifted Glass-type pads sound amazing to me, but there's probably a lot of people who think that's a bigger cliche than an 808 cowbell. Which I also love. I don't know ... I have way too many digital rack synths but I think I need a D-110 and a TX81Z still. I just wish they weren't 11" deep. I don't have anything bigger than an E-mu! I can't start hoarding pizza-box sized modules. I've got two M-DC1s FFS. But those have great drum samples. I wish Roland would just make a D-50 / D-110 boutique that had the whole SysEx implementation and all the programmer sliders LOL.

  • @alenk738
    @alenk738 10 років тому

    @Torben Of course there are sounds that the D-10/20/110 can make that the D-50 can't. For example, a sound that uses any of the PCMs that are in the D-10/20/110 but not in the D-50. More importantly, in performance mode the D-10/20/110 can layer two tones each composed of up to 4 oscillators (partials): 8 in total. The D-50 can only layer up to 4. Roland may have done this on the D-10/20/110 to make up for the lack of any kind of chorus to fatten up the sound.

  • @danielb2392
    @danielb2392 10 років тому +3

    description: "Captain Obvious variety - anyone who knows the least bit about synths knows that yes, the D-50 sounds better than its smaller cousins."
    Well, I'm not sure it's that simple. Each of the 2 engines has its own strengths and weaknesses, like portamento, multiple LFOs and PWM in the D-50 - but vs. 8x or 4x the multitimbrality and the added 6 invididual outputs in the D-110 (although not the keyboard equivalents). And indeed, many of the features are shared, meaning it's often quite possible to transfer patches between the 2 types with a little bit of work. So it's not all about sound, but also more practical features, and for many sounds, the D-10 family is just as capable :-)

    Had one about 1990. My programming skills were non existent, so I had to make do with the presets. I had recently been using an Alpha Juno (which was stolen) and I was expecting warm, analog sounds. I was disappointed, to say the least. Now that I know a little more, I may revisit this synth. Even though I have a D-550, I would like to program a D-10 and see if I can vindicate myself and the synth.

    Personally, I’d prefer something with sounds that are beautiful, but which would both provide the room for experimentation later, and force that sort of “compose now, design sounds later” mindset.
    I’m also looking for a midi controller for Synclavier Go! and Korg iM1. I think I may buy one of these to fill that role and bring something new to the table.

      The D-50 has the full "LA" synth engine, but the D-5,10,20 are capable of layering more "partials" at once in a patch. Of course this comes at a cost of less polyphony but nothing can beat a 32 partial lead patch.

    For an 80's rompler based synth, this actually sounds shockingly good. I came here to listen because I saw one of these for sale online, and since it's based on the LA algorithm, like the MT-32, I figured it might be a nice alternative. And then I find this. It sounds much better than the MT-32 (not surprising, as this was aimed at more professional users), but unfortunately, after looking at lots of spec sheets online, I find that it doesn't have those 64 programmable voices that the MT-32 has, so I can't really defend buying it for that purpose then.

    I have both the D10 and the D110 rack mount. I think the rackmount was a little conservative in the patches. The D10 has by far the best patches. I also find some of the "S" synthesis sharper and more brilliant than my SY77, JV2080 or Korg Poly 61. I keep them for that reason. Oh and the drums are really good, especially the kick drums. I wire it up on midi Chanel 10 to the electronic drum kit and its very much the 82-90 sound of pop and electronic music.

    Great demo, and ..I agree with the comments on your descritption...
    People don´t need to make such futile comments...but there are always many of those...And of course, I bet they´re not precisely enjoying the music...=)
    I love Roland, my bro used to have the D-20..and it was my first and unique contact with synths-in order to play them-But how much I did enjoy that!
    I remember I tried to play the Aria to the chord of G by bach...oh! I thought that was Heaven!

    I seems the D-50 and the D-20/ D10, is not the same engine exactly. Both are the linear arithmetic synthezis engine, but the D 20 is the second generation

    Dive into the synth engine rather than the presets and you'll be surprised how powerful this machine is, even to today's standards.

    Just picked one up for $100 (a semi fixer-upper). The real joke here is on the Jupiter 80 though, because this ''cheap'' D-10 (still $1400,- upon release in 1987 which was small fortune those days), sounds more pleasent, wide and open in a mix than the JP-80. This is for most of the time and it depends on the sounds a bit. Long story short, this is a pretty good synth, especially considering for what they're going for these days.

    The interesting question about D-50 and D-10/20 - I'm sorry for putting this up, but since you wrote so much why you don't want to read about it that it's too provocating :-) - is are there sounds which can't be reproduced on the D-50. And listening through your video, some sounds I could do with the D-50 indeed. But some others and be it at least for some different - minor? - character not... And then the D-10 still makes sense. What do the others think about that?

      There's one on Ebay right now for $99.95 "Buy It Now", & currently the auction is only at $19.95. Throw a bid down. I bet you have a decent chance of picking it up for $50 or less. It's cool little keyboard. I had one back in the late 80's. It was my first "ROMpler". It's very limited by today's standards & many of it's sounds are dated, but it's got some usable sounds. I had a lot of fun with my D-10 back in the day.

      Sounds like if it might have been initialized, in that case you'll need to load the factory, or third-party, or your custom patches on it
