It’s funny that this popped up this morning. As I make maps for an environmental planning company in GIS, I was thinking how grateful I’ve been over the last 3 years of using the ForclaZ MT100 you recommended to me 3 years ago. Although I ripped a small hole in the left sleeve years ago, some Leukotape has kept it going strong and it’s always the first jacket I reach for at this time of year when headed out on the trail in the early morning whether bikepacking, fastpacking, or a training trail run. I am so thankful for your wisdom and advice Justin. More so every time I reach for the Forclaz down jacket! -Nick, Prescott, AZ
I just went to Decathlon and bought the MT500 after watching your video. I was looking for a good cheap down jacket for weeks and watched every youtube video on down jackets and searched for hours. I even ordered a Columbia jacket but it was too big and way to thin and cold so i returned it. The MT500 is awesome with the soft fabric in the pockets and the hat i love it
Love my decathlon down jacket! I also love how’s its more accessible to people on a budget, and if you do rip a hole in it, you’re not going to cry as much over since it’s so much more affordable
@@JustinOutdoors The fluid cuts and variety of scenes make make the video feel a lot more visually interesting than say a year or two ago when there were more static talking to the camera shots. The way you talk about gear has always been top notch but the overall on camera confidence gives a more professional but still relatable vibe
A couple of other things to think about are zipper and material quality, and customer service. On the whole it’s a great video. I never considered how “springy” different quality levels of down are.
I own a Decathlon MT100 and love it , great value, my daily winter puffy. I also own some RAB gear which is fantastic as well but at a higher price. If you live in Canada and are a short drive from the US border I highly recommend Montbell Japan. Just get your sizing right and have it shipped to a US parcel service just over the border, drive over the border and pick it up. Much cheaper with the current value of the Yen compared to ordering from the North American Montbell site. I have never had to pay duty bringing it back to Canada as long as the total value isn't too high. I have their Alpine Down Parka ( insanely warm and not that heavy for a deep winter jacket, I get cold easily ) and a Storm Cruiser rain jacket and the quality is top notch ( don't recommend the Versalite for Canada as it's not actually waterproof, mine starting leaking after 20 minutes of Tofino rain, sold it. Get the Storm Cruiser instead, it's been bulletproof and still pretty light). Will probably order a Plasma 1000 next year.
I just bought a $500 montbell mirage parka, but from the japan website so its only $250 cuz the yen is weak. kinda stoked to see how well it works in Colorado this winter. decathalon is great though, use it as daily jacket for around town and for backpacking.
Used gear is a great way to get a high quality item without the price. Patagonia and REI are examples of where you can get used gear. That's how I got my puffy 😊
Nice review. Would like to see a review from really warm down jackets. Those 2 are still considered as lightweight puffs even though they offer quite good insulation. I’m talking something like arcteryx alpha parka or Fjällräven expedition down jacket. There seems to be none of those in UA-cam and I need a new one 😅
I have Tensor XC vs Xtherm coming soon. There are a lot of new pads on the market from brands who don't traditionally make good pads that I need to try, including some of the naturehike options. That's one of the missions in 2025! Baby Josie has really cut into pad testing time...
You should choose Lighttour R7.5. That is 10cm. Lighttour is a OEM product for NH. NH R8.8 is 12cm. When you sleep on it, it shakes a lot, which is bad for your waist. Because I am the distributor of those products.
Wow I didn't even know there was a thing as live plucking of geese. Definitely think there is an argument for animal welfare in mind hiking gear. Thanks for sharing
@@JustinOutdoors I am also very much on the fence about them in general. But except a fire, I can’t think of another way of keeping my legs warm while being completely stationary at camp 🏕️
I want a quilt not full of down but synthetic fibers as I hate the thought of sleeping in dead animal products , I need it to go at least -5 celsius. I found out today some bags use what they call live bird feathers. This means the poor animal was plucked while it was alive then continued to live till it was fat enough to killed be eaten. I don’t want this on my conscious, and apparently many bags and quilts use these fathers. No cool no good. So man use your knowledge and support animal free products and recommend what I can buy. I am sure all reading this now will want an alternative regardless of price.
vor 1 Minute What do you expect? Labour, farbrics and especially down has its price. You could get it cheaper if you want the geese to have completely f****d up living conditions and super low quality down. Get a synthetic jacket if you want it cheap.

This presentation is excellent, but I think you left out a very important detail when talking about the price: the quality of the zipper.
I have a Rab Mythic Alpine which retails for ten times what I paid for my Decathlon MT100. I still wear the Decathlon 90% of the time.
I demand more clones of Justin after watching this video. The ultimate side-by-side-by-side-by-side comparison!
I think I need to try doubling again. 4 Justins can likely review gear better than 2, right?

Great comparison Justin. Love my Ghost Whisperer 2, but need something warmer for the colder fall trips.
This was really useful - I’m in the market for a new down jacket so great food for thought
Excellent concept for a video. ;)
(I suspected this would be the result, but it's nice to know.)

Montbell Japan will ship directly to Canada too! I've ordered twice and didn't get hit with duties or brokerage because they ship Japan Post.
@@JustinOutdoors Oh wow ! That wasn't an option when I ordered in the past. Thanks for the heads up Justin. Lover their products.
I own an Alpine jacket from Montbell. Really nice for the price.
I'm lucky enough to live near the rab factory shop
Really good review with tangible views and real world application. Cheers.

I noticed that decathlon states their jackets run small. I usually wear a size large. Do you think it would make sense to upsize to an XL?

I might do a Decathlon Simond Down Parka vs Rab Mythic Ultra

Can you review the flextail zero r05 ultralight mattress?
I've been testing it. It will likely get an unfavorable review because the outside baffles lack insulation, which is a deal breaker for me.
Nemo tensor extreme vs naturehike r8.8 pad. It gonna get cold soon would be a good test. Naturehike is 1/2 the price of the tensor extreme

Seems expensive for a jacket with sown-through seams. Are there any out there with box baffles?.
Decathlon Simond Down Parka and Rab Mythic Ultra have box baffles and are really solid jackets
Oooo Justin, you look adoreable in both!
Decathlon for the win

Columbia has had the reflector interior for a long time. Just saying

Please make same video for downpants. Really big difference between naturehike and other brands

In France, the Decathlon MT500 is given as 800 cuin.
EU vs US measuring system
He means that the fillpower is 800 not 850. Says as much on all the decathlon sites. The overall warmth rating is still almost the same though.
@@natea1042 the FP is 800 using the EU measurement system and 850 using the US measurement system.
Right now Decathlon Germany offers MT500 for 80€.

dont spend 500 on a down jacket unless you got money basically

An ultralight down jacket is kind of a luxury item anyway though.
If you want budget try to find a used one.
$50 is more of what a budget jacket can be at. Anything hire should not be considered as budget.
