    Thanks for your question. The example I used for the tutorial was brief simply for logistical reasons and was meant to to show the mechanics of still image capture and editing with the GoPro to create a time lapse film.
    You can film an hour of footage and speed it up to create a time lapse film, but what if you want to film a process that occurs over several hours, days, weeks, or months? You have two choices in the latter cases: 1) film short clips at intervals and splice together in editing or 2) set up your camera to capture still images at an appropriate time interval and combine these images into a time lapse film (the more common approach). Taking still images (rather than video footage) means that less memory is needed in the camera and that the final (time lapse) film size is not huge.
    The interval of image capture depends on the duration of the event being filmed. For example, if you wished to film a year of seasonal change by a tree, you might take one image per day for 365 days (365 images). If you wanted to film a tidal cycle at the shoreline, you might take one image every 15 sec for 24 hours (a total of 5760 images). If each photo of the shoreline represents a 1-sec frame in the edited film and is played back at 30 frames per second, the final length would be: 3.2 minutes.
    This article explains the different approaches to creating time lapse videos and provides an example of each: thescientistvideographer.com/wordpress/how-to-create-a-time-lapse-video-from-still-images/

      ***** Hi im going to do a timelapse video of a train removal the duration of the works is 18 hrs. what would you recommend for shots per second 10 or 5 not sure vid only needs to be about 7min I tried to use timelapse calculator but confusing.

    • @sciencevideography
      @sciencevideography  9 років тому

      Barry john If I understand your project correctly, you could use either 10 or 5 second capture interval. A 10 sec. capture interval for 18 hrs will produce 6480 images, which if at 7 megapixels will just fit on a 16 GB card (holds 6500 images at that res). The resultant time-lapse video played at 30 fps would be 3.6 min. in length. Everything doubles for the 5 sec capture interval--so you'll need a larger memory card than 16 GB. More frames mean a smoother playback, which may factor into which capture interval you select.

      I have three 32gb memory cards. Would 30fps be smooth enough and so 5 shots per second make the vid about 7min. What would you recommend on a project like that. Thanks for the advice really helpfull

    • @sciencevideography
      @sciencevideography  9 років тому

      Barry john I think 30 fps would work and with 5 images per sec, you would have some options to play around with in editing and playback. Sounds like you have the memory capacity to do this. Good luck.

    Hi. I'm so new to GoPro. I have a Hero 3+ Black edition. I've been following you on how to do time-lapse. I do know there are two ways of filming time-lapse. Video and photo mode. I want to do Video time-lapse.
    Not photo Timelapse. As I want the videos to be ready to view. not the hundreds of pictures to edit way. I have tried to set this up. But comes up with a message basically saying I can't because of protune setting won't allow it. Can you advise please.I'm getting so near to selling this thing. Kind regards from the UK.Dave. Hello!
    At first, thanks for this awesome tutorial!
    But i have a question:
    Im gonna drive to italy soon, and im planning to make a timelapse Video with my gopro 3+ Silver. I have a 32gb Card in the gopro, so what are you guys recommendations for this kind of filming? im gonna put the gopro on the Dashboard behind the windshield, for about 6-7hours. What are the perfect "timelapse-settings" for a car and a drive this long? Thanks

    • @sciencevideography
      @sciencevideography  9 років тому +2

      TheAirbus100 You might select a 10 sec interval and get 6 images per min, 360 per hr, and 2170 in 6 hrs. This setting might be good for long stretches of monotonous road or landscape. For more changeable landscape and smoother playback, select 5 sec or 2 sec. Just depends on what you want and how quickly your scene changes. You should have no trouble fitting on a 32 mb card.

    Question, why wouldn't you just film an hour worth of footage and then just speed it up in whatever video editing program you personally use?

    I'm going to be wearing a GoPro for 9hrs while walking around to make a time lapse. What interval(0.5, 1.0, 2.0 etc.) should I use on the GoPro?

    • @sciencevideography
      @sciencevideography  9 років тому

      MattforApple Thanks for your question.
      I might use 5 sec or 10 sec for something like this. A 10-sec interval will give you 3,240 images and a final video of 1.8 min length (played at 30 fps). Double those numbers for the 5-sec interval. Shorter intervals will require a lot of memory to accommodate the large number of images that would be generated in 9 hrs. A 16 GB card will hold only about 6500 images at 7MP each. So you need to make your setting selection based on a number of factors.

    • @MattforApple
      @MattforApple 9 років тому

      For a time lapse thats 2 hours long, would you say its best to use time lapse mode or just take normal video and then speed it up? I want the final time lapse video to be at least 3 minutes.

    • @sciencevideography
      @sciencevideography  9 років тому

      MattforApple I would use the time lapse approach. You can calculate the capture interval by working backwards from your target length of 3 minutes.

      vlog4x4
      Thanks for your question. I changed the resolution mode in the tutorial simply to show that this option exists. However, there is a practical reason for selecting a lower resolution. The time-lapse film is constructed with multiple images, each whatever size is selected in the camera menu. This means you can end up with a very large file with a higher resolution mode, especially if there are hundreds of images. By using 7 megapixels, you can reduce the final file size; this resolution is still quite high and suitable for most situations. However, if you prefer, you can use 12 megapixels. The choice really depends on how many images will be used in the time lapse and what file size you can manage.
