I retired from being a dealer tech in 2002 due to health issues. I was a master ASE auto tech, with additional certification in engine drivability and diagnosis, and certified on heavy truck and airbrakes (we serviced large electric company trucks) I was very proficient in obd1 and 2, and to this day I do some side work for friends. Looks like now if you want to fix your own car, you need 10-15 thousand dollars worth of equipment, plus yearly paid subscriptions to dealer databases to access software for the different systems and modules. I miss the days of just swapping out the PROM chip to a new ecm. I'm thinking pretty much all repairs will be done with software, and I doubt there will be any physical repair of parts, something major breaks, customers will just get a new car.
Fantastic Video! Always amazes me how many modules are on late model cars... Thanks for giving us an idea of how much more goes into something as "simple" as power steering. I never would have guessed!
Way more involved with computers than I ever thought. Wish it was easy finding a extreamly competent mechanic like yourself. Thank you for your exelent videos Brad.
I just installed a used electric steering rack from the junkyard! I just scheduled a 9:00 appointment with ford for reprogramming the electric rack! Great video by the way!
People love all the technology in today's vehicles, but they hate the fact that have to pay for a scan for codes and some will complain to no end about it. What some folks don't realize though is that all that tech in the car is all communicating with the main brain in the car and that the days of just swap in a part isn't factoring in with a lot of today's vehicles. Your average person who can do some fixes to a vehicle can still do some to an extent, but there are somethings that even if a person replaces it still need to go to a shop or dealer to get it functioning and communicating. Your bang on though that you have to be well rounded and versed in a lot of things to work on today's vehicles. One guy I know left the trade just because he couldnt keep up with all tech required to work on the newer vehicles. I have always said that your always learning because the advances in tech are coming so fast these days
Great video Brad. Kind of crazy where your IDS showed 156519 miles and the dash shows 123056. Maybe the crash rolled er back. Thanks again for these great videos.
Update, the process replacing my electric rack a success!!! Junkyard rack and opinion with 43000 miles cost $100.00 Ford reprogramming cost $125.00 Ford wheel alignment cost $ 90.00 Thanks for everything!
The hacker in me really wants to try playing with that hex data to see what everything does. Very interesting manufacturing concept. One "lego" can be made to work in many applications. I'm also surprised at turning the entire job into reading a decision tree. As complexity increases the decision tree would have to be exponentially complex to remain accurate.
Happy i'm almost at the end of my career in automotive repair. I'm proficient with computers and the internet and computer repair is one of my hobbies but where i work they could never be able to afford the required equipment to do the job correctly. I think you will eventually see the MoM and PoP shops go the way of the carburetor and points.
Awesome video. Too bad it's all modules. Great for techs, but bad for customers. It seems like minimum is $1500ish unlike hydraulic. Very well detailed information.
Hey Man! Great job here. Ive got a question I was hoping you could answer for me. I have the 2014 Ford Taurus I did an engine swap on, its got the 3.5L engine and the exact same thing was put in, but I'm getting terrible gas mileage, before the swap I was averaging 10-11L/100KM combined and after the swap its 18-19.9L/100KM. Any idea what the problem could be?
Fantastic the most least annoying mechanic on utube apart from ( fixer good ) he a good guy too 10 stars for both of you.....got no clue how too say your utube name thow !
So, what was your solution? Im having an issue with my power steering My strering wheel is locked and im getting a notification on the dash concerning power steering failure
Hey great video on how to install a rack and pinion on a 2014 Ford Taurus . Question what program are you running on that PC to program that rack and pinion ?
Having a small problem..I have a 2014 Mks with park assist/lane keeping assist.we replaced with a used rack and none of those features are working. Is that a programming is or do ford/Lincoln with specific features need specific rack and pinions.

Great words of wisdom on the landscape of automotive diagnosis and repair. Also, a great glimpse in who you are and what you stand for. Thanks!

Appreciate your appreciation.

How much did the reprogramming cost you?
What a fantastic video series. I really loved the commentary at the end about helping your fellow man. Spread the peace bro.

Great video Brad. Kind of crazy where your IDS showed 156519 miles and the dash shows 123056. Maybe the crash rolled er back. Thanks again for these great videos.
My IDS is kinda glitchy. It will pull the mileage from the last car I worked on sometimes.
Jesus, these days, you guys have to be rocket scientists almost. Great video as always, I really enjoy watching them!!
Appreciate it.

Junkyard rack and opinion with 43000 miles cost $100.00
Ford reprogramming cost $125.00
Ford wheel alignment cost $ 90.00
Thanks for everything!
Did you need the old information off the donor car?
Phillip Miller No I did not! I had to give the salvage yard my year make and manufacturing date on my vehicle!
Where did you reprogram it, ford dealership? Am currently having same problem.
Strong Stronger yes drive it to Ford dealership to have it programmed!
@@joonajks Thank you very much

That was a great point on body work! Thanks
Good training, thank you for what you do.

It's an acronym for:
Ford
Lincoln
Mercury
MAZda
Great attitude and repair. Need to get IDS, lol. the Versa just does not do the job
Nice work !!!
Great video but it makes buying a 40,000 dollar restored 1965 Chevrolet seem like a Great Deal!
Amen to that
Good job friend. I have the same problem with my 2013 ford taurus sel and I couldn't find a solution for it
So, what was your solution? Im having an issue with my power steering
My strering wheel is locked and im getting a notification on the dash concerning power steering failure
@@ednaskeen8645 did you get your problem solved. I’m asking because I am having the same problems.

Hey great video on how to install a rack and pinion on a 2014 Ford Taurus .
Question what program are you running on that PC to program that rack and pinion ?
This is the Ford IDS program. It is standard at Ford dealers, but available to anyone. Lots of independent shops have them.
Thank you 🙏🏻 for sharing
Good job
Maybe the next computer should be a Panasonic Toughbook with touch screen ;)
Well, none of those fasteners would have come off like that here in NY 😂
:D life is good down here.
Yes it is. I just couldn't hand the heat. Sweat like Ted Hayes, the pilot, in the movie AIRPLANE (1980)
lol
what was the total repair bill, the car has 156k on it, surprised it was not a write off?
The owner bought 3 wrecked Taurus' to flip 2 good ones. He only had to pay the labor (4 hours) as he had all the parts from the donor vehicle.
No power steering fluid reservoir
There is a new update for ids.just a fyi
I never update my IDS until I am forced to.
Can you reprogram a used rack
