My Knives

- In this video i start by processing a log with my large knife for firelighting, i make a series of mistakes and fail to light it first time, i switch knives and then all is good.
main part of the video is myself showing and talking about the knives i have made over the years and kept.
I love this guy's calmness and honesty in every aspect. 💪🏻👏👏👏
Thanks. Beautiful collection of hand made knives. 🎸🔪
I'm in love!! Get prepared Rob, because I'm comin' calling around for Bertha's hand! I'll even settle for you as my father in law! That knife is a real dandy, and I love it!
I'm thinking of selling her
Rob Exserlent video you show great skill in making knives Nice thanks
Dad’s knife is pretty awesome! Heavy on the sentimental value.
Also "Dad's knife" looks like a superb design, I think plenty of people would like it!
It's very similar to the Roger Harrington bushman's pal 2, just longer.
I like the knife you make.
Condolences (late): I lost mine in 2017, I hope you are now done with pain. It takes a while, I know.
" Go and make yourself a cup of tea or coffee 'cos I'm probably going to talk for quite a while!!"... nothing new there then!😂🤣😂🤣
Man. If my son made me a knife like that. I would be so, so proud.🙂👍👏👏👏
Someone who never made a mistake, never made anything!
Thanks for your honesty, it shows that you Sir are a man of integrity!
Rare these days!
Take care
Graham
Cheers mate.
I do like the way you show things “warts and all”, we learn by our mistakes and you have to use what you have sometimes. Rad Brad would never do that!😂
Rad Brad doesn’t make mistakes!
He's too f'in awesome!!!
@@RobEvansWoodsman oh yeah! I watch all your vids. Greetings from sw Va USA.
All of them? Even the early shitty ones?🤣🤣
You’re brave drinking your first coffee of the day no where near indoor plumbing 😂😂😂
You make the most wonderful knifes
Thanks 👍
Seems my comment disappeared🤔….basically enjoyed the fact that because you analyse why your technique failed, we all learn about what to avoid and also see your solution at first hand. I also enjoyed the feather stick demo at the Gathering…as well as the beer ! 🍻Nice one Rob👌
thanks Stuart, always a pleasure to spend time with you and Steve.
Real beauties. You have a good talent. On your advice I bought a good Husqvarna axe last year. Haven't had a chance to use it yet.
Everyone fails now and again - thats how we learn. Love that youve got 'Dads' knife.
nice selection of knives
Honored to have several of your knives!
Thank you my friend.
Heck yeah! You "da man!" Couldn't catch this one yesterday because I had a hurricane to deal with, but you best believe I'm giving it a go now!
I hope everything is ok with you, hurricane looks terrible. I was in New Orleans two years ago and was shown the devastation that Katrina did.
@@RobEvansWoodsman thanks mate! I got lucky with this one, no real damage where I am. But yeah Katrina definitely took a toll
Watching this (from the wrong side of the pond 😉) while I head off to work... I'd rather be sitting in out in God's world!
Nice looking steel bro!
RobEvans Woodsman, You make some very nice knives. Thanks for showing them.
Thanks for showing your knives.
What I take away from this video: when preparing kindling and feathers for lighting a fire
you must either use an optimal tool or an optimal piece of wood. Bringing a decent firestarter also helps!
Great video, Rob 👍 And again an impressive performance to realize how important feathersticks are for lighting the fire!
If I ever have money to throw around again one of those Mors tribute knives will be on the top of the list.
Thanks mate.
35:00 - You are a born educationalist, just like me! The way you turn adversity into a learning opportunity is just great, and one of the reasons I watch your videos! Keep it up!
Loved it,great vid again Rob, really great channel you have👌🏻
Thank you my friend.
The one that looks like a Busse looks really nice! I thought it was a Busse when you first started using it in the video.
It was based on the Busse basic #9
We all fail our way to success, keep up the great job and keep posting videos.
The Panama Bushtool!!! My goodness! Loving it.
Nice knives Bob
Failure is the best teacher. Unless you give up, then it's for nothing. I like your style and outlook on the bushcraft scene. Here's a Subscribe.
Just got back from the Bushcraft Show and to tell the truth, I would have rather been at the gathering and had the chance of meeting you face to face! Plus I live really close! To say there were logistic issues there is a little bit of an understatement! Maybe see you next year at the gathering instead! 😎
I'll be at the Gathering mate, fingers crossed. Never been to the bushcraft show, always on my anniversary and we're usually on holiday.
We have all had fire fails appreciate you being honest with what you showed .
10inch blade !!
6 inch is max for control I think ..
Enjoyed watching your video
Interesting progression of knives but all lovely blades buddy. 👍 Made a few feathers with my Bushtool this morning btw👌🔥
Good man, I assume you are happy with it.
@@RobEvansWoodsman Absolutely 👍
Beautiful knives, pieces of art.
Thanks for the "show and tell" Rob, speaking as a retired engineer, you look to make damn fine examples of the knifemakers art, excellent. Thanks for the honesty.
I appreciate your humility Rob … Always a pleasure watching your videos and seeing the progression of you becoming a knife maker!
Top Notch!!
Great video, I like that you keep them real Rob. Makes me feel better about my fire failures. Loved the knife show and tell, and so glad that I already own and use 2 of your knives. It was good to see the progress and evolution of you knives.
Nice collection of quality knives rob, thanks for showing us👍
Lots of good looking knives there bud. Can’t wait to add one of yours to my collection.
I Love the look of Bertha, she looks like the love child of a Kukri & a Bowie. Thank you kindly for taking my suggestion for this video, it was a pleasure to watch 😎
Glad you liked it my friend.
@@RobEvansWoodsman I would Love to see (as would the people from other countries) a bit in your video about the wildlife that you have encountered in your location. I would also Love a video (remake) of a lecture of yours. TBH I would watch an instruction video from you about anything (e.g. picking your nose) 😂
Thanks Rob great knives!Greetings from South Africa
Great episode. Touching. A nice progression.
Thanks for sharing.
Stay healthy brother
Horace Kephart once said.. “In the school of the woods there is no graduation”.
Thanks for keeping it real Rob!
Love how calming your videos are. Thanks for sharing. Such great tools too!!
Funny because I've never thought of myself as a calming influence!
all really nice looking and tasteful knives, very talented.
Nice knives I really like the bush tool thanks for the great videos
Another great video, and I love your knives, great job!
Always enjoy your videos Rob
Fine job on all your knives, love the puukko and bushtools ! Grizz 🐻
love the blades very beautiful
Thanks for your excellent instruction 👍💯
You are welcome!
Excellent knives Rob and honesty, had me chucklin with the fire 🔥 must admit I love me kukris
Another blend of info, humour and humanity.
No swearing in that one 🤣🤣🤣 family friendly!
Love this video, so interesting seeing the evolution of your knife making journey to the fantastic tools you make now!
Hopefully you'll have one by next weekend.
@@RobEvansWoodsman can’t wait!
LOL!!!!! A few shantys too many!!! Probably a good thing I wasn't there. :D I just now read your reply from the last video. I'll drop you an e-mail tomorrow. As usual, a few good laughs and some good lessons......even the best woodsmen need reminders. The bloody Yank gives ten thumbs up...... hahahahahahah!!!!
Lovely evolution, even your journeyman piece looks excellent Rob
Not great up close.
@@RobEvansWoodsman Way better than my crude efforts
Stick at it, there's a point where you know that you are getting somewhere.
I'm not an amazing knifemaker but they do the job and look ok.
The secret to making a good-looking knife is to aim for something that looks like it came from a factory, too many curves make a knife look like amateur hour, straight clean lines you need to aim for.
@@RobEvansWoodsman Thanks for the tip
My knifemaking history is almost the exact opposite of yours. I spent most of my time making medium to large knives, fighting knives, some experimental ones, and hunter/skinners on commission. My biggest challenge was a large double edged fighter, with a deep hollow grind. The amount of work it took was absolutely astounding! The one "bowie" I made was very interesting - sort of drop point (instead of clip point, as is usual). Quite complex grinds, shallow hollow grind for strength, with a beautiful yellowish wood handle (no idea what it was - it was a gift). My best knife I think. You have Bertha ( Sigh!), and I have Bushwhacker. I think my biggest mistake was spending so much time and resources on big knife projects, so I didn't get around to making anything for myself. You've done well there!
You sound like a far more occumplished knife maker than myself.
Loved the talk rob. The content was great with great products as well as learning experiences with a true touch of humanity all in the bush world, Thank you! And tension breakers are much needed sometimes good to hear you got one in 😁
Thanks Chris.
Really enjoyed this mate 👍
Nice one Rob, enjoyed that. Sorry about your Dad. The knife is a nice reminder though. We all fail and it's nice to see our Bushcraft hero's do too sometimes. Nice knives there as well.
Nearly eleven minutes before the kettle went on - and then you drink bloody coffee! What's wrong with you Rob? Please don't get all coffee-snobby on us!
I'd had two cups of tea before leaving home mate.
Found your channel and enjoyed your videos with no idea you made knives until recently. Big fan of your work and I will definitely own a Rob Evans one day! I saw Simon a bloke in the woods had one too..hope you manage to go full time and continue to live your dream! 👊🏼
Hi Rob ☺ nice knives mate, I think all serious knife collectors, users, have certain knives they'd never never part whith, and it's not about their monetary value either, I've some knives gifted to me by a long time friend who's not very well now, and although their nothing special, they bring back memories of being in the woods whith him trying differant knives out, having our snap, and a good time, and so those knives I'd never part whith. Thanks for the video mate, stay safe, best wishe's to you and your's, Stuart uk.
Hi Stu, I have a few other knives that I couldn't part with, Chris Reeve Shadow 4, Robert Parrish 8" survival, cold steel trail master stag, Bison Forrester stag.
As you say mate it's not the monetary value it's the sentimental value.
Interesting thanks
Rob, thank you for the video and especially for leaving in the mistake with the fire. I'm finally getting back into the woods after being gone for far too long and your videos have been a huge help. As an American I get a huge kick out of Rad Brad. Yes some of us (OK a lot of us) can be just that ridiculous and more so.
I thought Brad would really piss some people off but I've only had a few negative comments and thumbs down.
One guy really didn't see the funny side and chooses to ignore the videos.
He was only meant to be a one off but I kept it going, I won't over doo it.
great video Rob sadly i missed the WG , I am sure towards the end you where going to say something about the GOS atb
I enjoyed the GOS but unfortunately it was a bit quiet, quite a few exibitors and shops didn't turn up.
Loved the video I've been watching your videos since you started, the FTP knife is superb, I enquired about getting one many moon's ago but then lost my job hence know pennies, but in the plus side you did inspire me to have a go at making my own, I've made five up to know and I have to say it's a great feeling using a knife you've made yourself, my first one I made was based on a kephart but with a zero scandi it preforms great at several different tasks made up with it, thanks for taking the time to do these vids, best wishes. 👍
That's great Dave , it is a good feeling using your own knife.
i do like a big knife for camp tasks,
my number one use is wood processing, number two is using it to cook with,
three is probably clearing brambles and or low hanging branches from a camp site.
This is the first video of yours I have watched (found your channel after seeing a video with one of your knives being used) and I want to say how pleased I am to see someone leave in and show mistakes in a video. As you say nobody is perfect in real life and too much of that is hidden which is not good for the youngsters growing up.
Edit: I also enjoyed your video, always enjoy the company of down to earth people.
Great, glad you like my stuff.
Great wisdom demonstrated yet again, star fire instead of damaging blade edge. Good to see Bertha out again. I am now down to a 4' long stick for a 20 curls fire stick.....(no reflection on the knife I am using, just my ability)...lol. Keep them coming mate, great as always (warts and all).👍👍
Cheers Phil, if you're going for 20 curls then a 12-16" stick is best.
For me it is definitely feet not inches.....
awsome fatwood brother
Experiments sometimes goes well, sometimes not. That is why they are fun. I never call them failures.
Now, that was an extraordinary collection my friend. Many thanks for this video Rob. Very enjoyable to watch them, and hear a short story behind each.
I was hoping that your 6-pin FTP would made it to the list. Then one you used in (mentioned) feather stick tutorial video. Still my favorite looking one.
Of course, the one with antler handle, is also great (at 25:30).
Cheers!
I sold the other on.
I'm making a short run of FTP'S , if you're interested email me robevs73@googlemail.com
Nice vid again!
Enjoyed looking at your knives. I have one of your Bush Tools, got it on ebay, but no sheath. I bought one for it, but would love to have one made by you to make it complete.
Email me robevs73@googlemail.com
The first thing I watch today after getting released from the hospital.
Get well soon my friend.
Another really good, honest video Rob. Half serious suggestion here. . . ."Have you thought of putting serial numbers on your knifes" ? . . .Just thought it would make them easier to identify them when , in many years to come, they pop up on The Antiques Road Show !
It's crossed my mind , probably do it when I go full time.
First comment ever on UA-cam but as always I enjoyed the video- your honesty is like a breath of fresh air. Loved seeing the evolution of your knife making - the one you made your dad is lovely. I’m the guy you made Bertha’s twin for - she’s on chopping duty later!
Awesome mate, I recognised your name but couldn't remember who had the better knife.
@@RobEvansWoodsman The bush tool you made me a few years earlier is the longest serving knife I’ve got - absolutely love that one.
You were fine Rob on the fire lighting, it was the fault of the gawd awful music! 🤣
👍👍👍
Well, Rob, I was feeling a little dry and sleeping sideways waiting for your video and it is Monday(my time). Such collection and stories. Good video, Rob. You are not trying to make us jealous are you?
I have a reasonable knife collection.
You haven't seen half of it!
@@RobEvansWoodsman A half? I doubt what I've seen is even a quarter of it. Show-off!
Love these videos. Are you doing a 5 favourite large blade knives video. Also how often do you make knives? Would love 1 of your bush tool knives. Love the human touch to All your video. Still enjoying All the work All the way from Western Australia
Hi Ed, I can put you on the waiting list, about 8 months.

Thats a knife!!! CROCODILE DUNDEE WOULD BE PROUD OF THAT KNIFE ROB.🤘👊🤣🤣🤣👏👏👏🔪🔪🔪🔪 BERTHA is a Beast. Cool coffee pouch. Your knife making skills are special brother, you have a gift. And i have seem comments on your grind angle and grind height are in the sweet spot/ goldy locks zone.JUST RIGHT. Great video. I'm really jealous.😊🙂👏👏👏👏👍👍👍👍🤘🤘🤘👊👊👊
Thanks mate
How many times can you almost end a video :-) Love the knives and you rambling to the camera, cheers
You mentioned a trip to Panama in this video… I remember an absolutely epic review of a Bushtool knife on a British forum. Maybe British blades or bushcraft uk. Was that you??
No, that was Stuart Goring in Borneo.
His father lives in Borneo and I think he used to take groups into the jungle.
He had a traditional tattoo on his leg which went bad! Funny things you remember about people!
It was a good review and the photos we're really good, I remember one was the bushtool covered in mud in his hand.
Its funny because I am going over to more utilitarian survival type knives at the moment, convex grinds, stainless steel !
It's probably just a phase!
@@RobEvansWoodsman that was exactly it! I remember the mid picture aswell
I like birtha looks like jungles esse 👍👍👍👍
But without the huge handle and awful black coating, I'd like to try a Juglas.
Rob ,what do you think about ray mears Buschcraft knife (black canvas) and woodlore pro ? Yes the price is very high but i like the design on both
Waste of money, the original Woodlore should not cost more than £250 in my opinion £300 max, you're paying for Rays name on it , don't get me started on the Pro it's a knife made to sell, it has nothing Pro about it but the price.
That's not to say that I wouldn't like to try one.
Bertha reminds me of the BRK Crusader
She was based on the Busse basic #9
Nice Collection of Sharp things. Nice to see you evolve over the years. Ever thought of making a kukri?
Made two many years ago, too much grinding for my little machine.
Re the banana knife, that warp might make it an excellent de-barking slicer. Otherwise, have you tried a carbide tipped hammer for straightening tempered steel?
I forgot I had the banana knife, I am going to get one of those hammers.
@@RobEvansWoodsman they work amazingly well.
Great video as always. But lose the music. It takes away from the feel of your work. Your videos are superb they way they are. Just my opinion not trying to throw shade. 😀
Funny thing I'm sitting in the pub with my friends and Nick just said the same thing.
Hello ! which is your favorite steel and why? :) I made for myself a knife with rwl34 and O1 too I love each but the rwl34 is more comfortable everything i think :)
i like RWL34 because its as strong as carbon steel but dosent corrode
Hey Rob I am stuck in " No Dogs Allowed " Flat in London , is there any chance of You bringing a Dog on Your Excursions ? Keep them coming as I Learn something more every time I watch You .
Not much chance of me taking a dog out, I have two cats and they just eat, sleep and shit.
Great video, a question: why do you use 01 steel in your knifes?
It's cheap, strong and takes an excellent edge.
34:44 🤩

I won't BS you.
Yep - same here, 40 years of making fires and they still go wrong sometimes.
As Queen Victoria said on learning about the death of former PM and titan of British statesmanship Benjamin Disraeli "shit happens mofo".
You're lucky, you've kept some great knives - I tend to keep the ones that went slightly wrong and give all the good ones away 🤣 I suppose it's like builders houses always needing work.
My dad was a joiner, back gate was falling apart for years!
Love your videos but you suffocated that fire by continuously adding sticks. Put less on and try not to move the sticks at all.
I must have been having an off day!
A wise man once told me the secret to making a good fire is preparation you should listen to your own advice 😂😂😂
Where could I get a shirt like the one you’re wearing??

Tell Roger I sent you.
Quoting crocodile Dundee 🐊 that's not a knife this is a knife 😆 you got some big knives there mate 👍 quick question in your opinion is the bow drill rivet in the knife handle really that dangerous? Personally think its a good idea 💡
It's dangerous if you're an idiot!
I'd rather have one and not need it than vice versa.
